As a driver I rarely get tips from business, upper class, or wealthy people. In other words the people that probably can easily afford to tip usually don't and the people who work extra hard to earn their money tend to tip more often because they understand how hard it is to make money and can clearly see that you're out there working hard too. But honestly, overall... Most people don't see the value in what we do, the risks that we take, the money we put into our vehicles (Gas, maintenance, car wash, inspections, registrations, damages/repairs, etc.), and the amount of money we actually get paid compared to what they actually pay, but they should learn this and know it... maybe then they will start tipping their driver's. After all, don't most people tip their servers at a restaurant and all they do is deliver their food to their table, we are using our own vehicles and gas to personally deliver them safely to their homes, work, or other destination... now that is definitely worthy of a tip.
It’s because riders want to save and are on tight budgets. They will tip if the driver is extremely nice and outgoing and shows that they need money (talk about how your a single working dad that has two kids to feed) and it makes the rider feel bad and they will tip for sure, trust me.
What I LOVE about most (not all) of the drivers I’ve encountered have been how friendly they are. I’m kinda introverted but a friendly, smiling driver makes my day. I’m only 46 but I have inflammatory arthritis in my neck so I try to drive as little as possible. I use services like Uber, Instacart, Uber eats because it’s just a safer option on days when pain is bad. So I tip because I appreciate the service and I’d be lost without it. Plus, on the bad days a friendly face, a kind person really does me a lot of good. I can’t speak for everyone but that’s what makes me want to leave a good tip. And karma gets the shitty tippers.
When I drove the taxi my passenger tip 80% of the time. My lyft passenger tip 15% of the time & uber passenger only tip 10%. When uber/lyft low the rates we get the public transportation passenger. These people sometimes don't pay their bus fare.
Uber passengers are extremely cheap! I myself, drive Uber and noticed that it's the younger generation and older generation that don't tip! I have a Cadillac SRX, offer candy, keep my car clean and 90% of the generations I mentioned will not tip regardless what you offer them! It's pathetic!
When I get a $5 Lyft ride, I usually tip $5. That's 100%. I do that because the ride is so inexpensive, and I know these drivers are out here hustling their @$$ off. I drove for Lyft today, and over 8 rides given (some of the rides had 3-6 passengers), I received 3 tips for a grand total of $4 ($1 + $1 + $2) I probably drove about 100 miles, spent 4.5 hours, burned up $25 in gas.... I have a Lyft XL, and Lyft Luxury vehicle, I gave 5-star service to everyone. (This is LA/OC, California).... I cannot believe these M-Fer's don't tip. Un-freaking-believable. So much for providing 5-star service.

I also have drivers who will have the radio blasting and slam on the brakes constantly. In my opinion if you are working in an industry where tips are part of it you should at least try to be a friendly person, have a clean car and know how to drive. If passengers think we are making $20-30/hour, many will feel a tip is not warranted. ** Many cheap passengers. Ironically, affluent business people are the worst, and humble home health care workers are the best as far as consistency. Many of these people work 12 hour shifts, only make $10-12/hour, yet can find a way to tip $2-3. Businessmen and women .. very selfish .. they really disgust me. ** Also, those who work in the sevice industry, who receive tips tend to tip better. These are food servers, bartenders, hair stylists, etc. ** Without tips and surges, considering gasoline, maintenance and wear & tear, I'd make less than minimum wage. With tips and surges (which seem to be getting rarer), I'm still only making about $11-12/hour, which is peanuts in SoCal. ** Both Uber and Lyft need to adjust their fares upward to accommodate higher fuel costs. ** If both rideshare companies paid their drivers better, there would be better driver retention, and then, they wouldn't have to attract new drivers with huge $500 starter bonuses. That doesn't make sense!
What is the distance we are supposed to pick up passengers for lyft because today I got pinged for a 28 min drive 21 miles and I declined it only to get pinged again for the same pick up. Never again will I accept I drove out to a winery took me 32 min get there I drive a Ford Explorer they requested plus so I got them all ritzy wealthy people in just to drive another. 38 min away further from my home. Got them there and I didn't get one cent tip! Bastards! Pissed me the fuck off! Not one red cent! I got paid $42 after lyft took their cut. So I basically made around $15- 20bucks after fuel I drove around 135 miles round trip? Why is lyft making us drive so damn far to pick up customers I get told to accept request wtf
I tip at least 20% especially when they’re nice and help with luggage. The two times I haven’t the car was filthy and other its stunk like someone was smoking. When you request a ride always factor in the tip . Lucky for me I live in a big city with great transit system, if I can’t afford the ride +tip I’ll take the train plain and simple.
I encourage Uber drivers such as myself to rate the non-tipper with 3s and simply refuse to pick up passengers with less than a 4.95 Let them walk or take a cab! Ingrates.

Waiters staff in 4 and 5 star establishments can make up to $200-$300 an hour in tips- but yet they can get paid in 'wages' (from the restaurant) the same as the wait staff at a Waffle House who might make the same 'wage' but due to the low bill they only get an extra $10 an hour in tips due to the price of food being so low compared to a black tie establishment- it's all based on the % of the check. $200 for dinner is a $40 tip at 20%. That's a lot of waffles to sling if your gonna make that tip at a low price joint for doing the same job. Do you tip your barber for a good cut? A bartender for good service? A bell hop for carrying your bags at the Marriott? Point is, there are industries where tipping is expected regardless of what they are 'making', and industries where it IS NOT traditional to tip. Point is? Be consistent. If you're not going to tip ANYBODY- then don't. But it's hypocritical to tip a taxi driver, a limo driver, and not a ride share driver.

I drive both UberX and UberSelect part-time in Raleigh NC. 90% of my passengers are upper middle class and wealthy individuals. Very rare I pick up UberSelect it's mainly UberX and even at RDU airport, all corporate trips are made by UberX and not a single UberSelect. Sometimes I feel that I'm giving out free rides because on top of all that these people will not even tip you a miserable dollar, even if they are traveling in groups in which they do on most of the trips. Its really sad to see people so smart, flourishing, successful, strong, vigorous, profitable, lucrative and at the same time act so cheap to the drivers. Also you are not driving a company car you are driving your own car putting very expensive ware and tear on it. Even though it's considered a customer service position. We pay for our own work liscense and this job requires a lot of walking and standing. Which is wear and tear on our bodies. You can replace your car, but I can't replace my body. We have different professions, but yet we still serve the public. The difference is, you can get tips. You should feel fortunate.

The reason uber and lyft drivers don't get tipped is because Uber and lyft were made around not tipping. If you want tips drive a fucking taxi and stop expecting other people to give you a decent wage when the company your contractor who you're employed to is the one responsible for that
I have to say to you Coustomers as I’m a driver it’s very difficult sometimes when people don’t tip we don’t make that much like you guys think and with that can rise problems down the line even leading to making all the lyft and uber driver not working and you guys won’t have no transportation people need to wake up . They want me to put there luggage in the trunk and then not tip and then have the nerve to ask for water and then I give it and not tip

These drivers are going out of their way to pick all you sorry ass with their own vehicles and gas. Every one should tip their drivers "Cab, Uber, Lift, Hotel shuttles, Limousine or personal" no less than 3 dollars minimum, if you can't do that than take a bus or walk. We already know who's not tipping. When ever you get a cancellation from a driver or if the driver leaves after 2 minutes or if no one is picking you up, except for nasty car........... now you know the deal and is going to get worse if you don't change these stupid culture.

Abu Ali BH I'm Spanish/Asian and I always tip when I Lyft. As a driver I rarely get tips from business, upper class, or older white people as you so put it. In other words the people that probably can easily afford to tip usually don't and the people who work extra hard to earn their money do because they understand how hard it is to make it and can clearly see that you're out there working hard too. But honestly, overall... Most people regardless of race, nationality, gender or sexual orientation don't tip because they don't see the value in what we do, the risks that we take, the money we put into our line of work, and the amount of money we actually get compared to what they actually pay, but they should learn this and know it... maybe then they will start tipping their driver's. After all, don't most people tip their servers at a restaurant and all they do is deliver their food to their table, we are using our own vehicles and gas to personally deliver them safely to their homes... now that is definitely worthy of a tip.

Because you are already getting paid! I work in a clinical laboratory. I see 30-40 patients a day! I am in healthcare, so that means I cannot accept tips! Why??? I provide a service by drawing blood! I am expected to do it in one poke and with a smile! I barely make enough money to pay my rent! So stop complaining! Tips should be appreciated, not EXPECTED! There's lots of service jobs where people are not tipped!
do you not get that uber and lyft drivers already get 25% of the fare cost immediately cut from there earnings. Also you are not driving a company car you are driving your own car putting very expensive ware and tear on it. On top of it is a huge cost in gas money. after all the expenses that account for driving and putting your self at a risk driving on busy highways and around reckless drivers. and picking up people who are drunk and driving through areas with high crime and crazy people around trying get into your car. there is so many reasons why a passenger should tip there driver especially if there a nice driver with a good clean car getting you home safely. its ignorant to not tip a driver like that
xadem yolo Please! I have the potential to get exposed to hepatitis, HIV and other diseases. So that's a danger and we are considered providing a service. We are not allowed to get tips. Even though it's considered a customer service position. We pay for our own work liscense and this job requires a lot of walking and standing. Which is wear and tear on our bodies. You can replace your car, but I can't replace my body. We have different professions, but yet we still serve the public. The difference is, you can get tips. You should feel fortunate.
I too am in danger of patients freaking out on me because I have to stab them with a needle! Some of these patients are from psych wards. There is a potential risk of them hitting me too, still no tips.
Tonya Bell your talking about a totally different occupation. If people don’t tip there driver after expenses drivers can make less than minimum wage that’s insane. If your not getting paid enough hourly or in salary for your job that too is not good.
