    Late to the party here but this was also my issue, only instead of sandpaper I just gave it a good scrub down with my shirt to clean the connections got em sparkly just fine, also the connection on the button side has a spring under it that's supposed to push the connection out so it has a solid connection, mine was gummed up but worked it free so it sprung out like it should, thank you for this video I would have been chasing ghosts if not for it, haha!

    yeah, what happens is the contacts get dirty, it overheats and it melts the plastic. Eventually melted plastic gets all over the contacts - plastic is not conductive. Whammo. It's dead.

    Take note that the kill switch as above the spring loaded unit under cleaning and repair can also be an intermittent problem. While switched to on-run position, it can in fact be dirty or as not making contact. And, vexing to find as a no start prob|em. I have the view these units were of poor design. But as stock configure, I fit them as shown in this great post.

    I’ve been using TH-cam for years and I have never commented on any video but this the exception, I bought my bike last Saturday may 30 2024 from a guy that said it only needed new battery and choke cable, I went bought new battery plug hook it to bike and surprise bike would not even start cranking with this exact same problem it would turn all lights on but no crank I was totally disappointed I thought I got ripped off but then I came to TH-cam looking for a solution and boom found this video this everything step by step and yes!!! I worked I got the bike running you save me money and time I can tell you have much I appreciate you making this video and by all the comments here I can tell many other found a solution as well 5 year since you uploaded this video and it’s still helping us riders!! My contacts were dirty so I cleaned them and still nothing any suggestions????

    Mine does the same thing, only 2 weeks after I bought it, what a sh1t bike. Does not deserve it's reputation for reliability at all. My air cooled inline twins have never had any kind of problem, and they've been totally neglected. I bought a new rectifier, battery, and spark tester, maybe one of those will help me determine if it's something else in the electrical, one of the stupid safety kill switches, or a dead fuel pump.

  • @chief1223
    @chief1223 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    For reference, if _this_ switch is the problem, or you suspect it is, you can jump the starter relay with a screwdriver across the two big terminals. If the red stop/start switch is the problem, the screwdriver trick won't work, as you won't have spark either. That one was the problem on my VLX, the plastic housing the switch had cracked into two pieces. I was able to repair it (for now at least) with some PlastiWeld.

    • @chief1223
      @chief1223 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mentioning this trick because in the field, a random screwdriver might be all you have access to (should have one in the toolbox), and it should be enough to get you home so you can fully repair the start button. Old Ford trucks had a fender mounted starter relay that was prone to failure and a lot of them have been started this way over the years.

  • @seesaw7289
    @seesaw7289 ปีที่แล้ว

    I spent a $150 eight years ago for a whole new switch assembly. So thanks for this. I was told by a Honda technical advisor that starting the bike with the headlight switch on high beam can overload the starter switch's tiny copper strip and can "melt" it as well. So it's best to start the bike with the headlight switch on low. Also, it is imperative to use dielectric grease on those switch contacts to keep the switch moving smoothly and to prevent salt, dirt and corrosion of the contacts.

  • @sawgunner85
    @sawgunner85 ปีที่แล้ว

    Folks who have never heard of dielectric grease should probably take that as a sign that they arent quite actually at the "take my bike apart" phase at this time. You dont know what you don't know though i suppose....

    I will give you a tip, Walmarts kitchen surface cleaner with bleach. Pretreat but be careful because it will bleach it if left too long. Spray it on lightly then work it in with your fingers on the stain. Let it set a couple minutes then shampoo. It will take out stains that are almost black and set in deep.
