  • The work begins on our RC390 Track Bike Conversion, do you think we can make it look like a KTM RC 8C? We strip away all the unnecessary street fairings. We are also putting the little KTM bike on a diet. We're going to weigh everything to see how much lighter the bike will be in track trim.

    I have the very same bike and was planning to build a track bike but the problem is I live on a town up the mountains and the closest track is 160miles away(100miles of that winding roads) so it takes 9 hours to get there so thats already half of the weekend gone.. although the roads here are curvy and mostly nice its definitely illegal to speed and unsafe to not have lights and shit.. also track tires and black ice don’t mix 😂.. Im very exited to see this build through as this is the closest experience I can get to a proper rc390 track bike build.. Im also looking forward to seeing you ride this in the track..

    Hey, been a while. Since Inde at YCRS in fact. I've adjusted the valves once and checked them another time. The first time they needed adjustment (about 650 miles). The second time at about 3800 miles, they didn't. That was lots of track days and high RPM running. I used the clearances for the Duke since the ones printed on the frame are difficult to manage (the tolerance is less than 1 shim increment which makes it nearly impossible). I erred on the loose side if I needed to. Getting the valve cover out is the hard part. You can take it out the top or the front. I marked my cams with a sharpie to realign them but I saw someone else just put a zip tie through one of the holes in the cam gear and around the chain to hold it in place while you move the cams. That's probably better. Measuring the clearance can be a major PITA but they give you slots in the cam hold downs to get in there. While you're there, put in a NGK DILKAR7B11 spark plug and consider changing the cap and wire. I also used a slightly higher pressure radiator cap and put in a bigger injector which you will need if you do any tuning. All easy to do while you have it that far apart. Don't know if I should say the vendor here... Ok this is long enough now. Get in touch if you want, I've got some experience working on this bike, it's not that bad once you've done it once or twice.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great information! I was planning on the injector plug and cap, but I wouldn't have thought of the higher pressure cap. I'll order one of those too. Do you have a vendor you like?

      @@CanyonChasers Gray Area KTM and Formula 390. Gray Area KTM has some unique parts that they put together that I like such as the shift shaft support and short throw lever. The only drawback is it's hard to find neutral but the bike shifts so much better. They also have the plug wire and radiator cap. I'm using the Tyga rearsets from Formula 390 and I like them pretty well but there are many options. I'm not a believer in doing a ton of mods to bikes but I definitely spent some money on this one and it really becomes nicer to ride. I have a motion pro feeler gauge to do the valves, the long narrow one, and it works well. I love this bike. Street and track. My Panigale V4 just sits. Sorry I can ramble forever.

    I am curious to see what the measurements are on the valves. My local mechanic said to wait until the second oil change to check them as he had never seen them out of spec when KTM had called for them to be checked, hence why I never did it. Ari ended up taking his motor out of the bike to adjust the valves but I think he said that was for video purposes.

  • @ManCannotRide
    @ManCannotRide 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I am also waiting for the "valve job" that has a notorious reputation, according to what I have researched so far with KTM 390s in general.

    • @ZuminaZX

      why are you so scared of it? It's no different than an adjustment on any 4T thumper dirt bike.

    • @ManCannotRide

      @@ZuminaZX Just what Dave said in the video, the issue is with the access to the engine. In some bikes, the engine is more accessible so to speak but in the 390s, you gotta dig into the bike more. Adjusting the valve is not really difficult as long as we have the right specs and tools.

    • @ZuminaZX
      @ZuminaZX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get it, just starting and finishing the job is the hardest part. From my experience KTM always finds a way to remind you they're in charge.

      @@ZuminaZX The way that their overall design is more compact (slim) than other manufacturers...I am thinking that maybe because their core is more of the off-road, dirt bike layout. damn. so cool. curious if you will put in new shock and forks. i bought my 2016 specifically because previous owner had installed the andreani frok internals and ohlins 303 rear. dontknow what the stock suspension was like but mine def rides amazing on the track.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stock the forks feel alright. Not great but okay. The rear shock is stupidly way too soft. The spring rates front to rear feel to be totally off.

    • @andyruhl7739
      @andyruhl7739 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CanyonChasers I'm well over 220 with gear and the stock suspension really isn't an option, but I was having a hard time following a guy who was closer to your size on a completely stock 390. So it does work pretty well for some people. The rear shock has some preload adjustment that might help. But otherwise it's a spring with some dogshit in it.

      Not only that, I think you'll have a hard time finding the "hardware" to finish the job. But light wheels make a night and day difference. I've ridden a 390 with BST wheels and it's by far the biggest improvement you can make.
