Being a Vietnamese, I disagree with some of the claims:
No.1 - (Small dispute) - The French came the first time in the 1850s to colonize Vietnam and not the 1950s, the 1950s was the second time. The political influence of France in Vietnam really started in the 1850s. In the 1950s, they came back after the Japanese defeat in WW2 to reclaim their colony in Indochina, including Vietnam.
No.3 - After watching the video and reading some of the comments, I can see why Vietnamese people were furious about having our ancestors related to the Chinese, who we have fought in defense of our country for the entirety of our history.
No.8 - I agree that people who were involved in the Vietnam War are more likely to suffer from PTSD. However, this video starts talking about PTSD in the Vietnamese population and ended up talking about US policies on helping American veterans combating PTSD(?!).
No.10 - (Small dispute) - About the flavors, it's plain in the North, spicier in the Middle, and sweeter in the South. Being a Southerner, I think I'm quite bias, though.

vh90278 thanks for the info. I actually know this and that’s why I commented “political influence” to mark the success of the French invasion rather than just “influence” in general. It’s funny that your comment reminds me of the place my father used to work, which is situated on Alexandre de Rhodes street in today Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks.

Ho Chi Minh's birthday IS NOT a national holiday. However, Ho Chi Minh passed away on 2/9/1969, which is also Vietnamese Independence Day (2/9/1945, much coincident) , so 2/9 is a national holiday.

I can't stand how wrong no.3 is. Legend has it that the princess (Au Co) is from the union of the Lac Viet & Au Viet and none of which is Chinese. Please have your facts checked when it comes to sensitive subjects as this. It's undeniable that our culture is strongly influenced by Chinese; however, it's absurd to say that we came from them, that we're originally them. We are not.

More facts about Vietnam from a Vietnamese resident:
    - Most of us (~70-80%) are atheists. Some practice Buddism but they arent registered as Buddist on their IDs.
    - Women's right is very equal here. Women can dress whatever they want, ride/drive everywhere. Women are expected as much as men to go to college and earn a good job.
    - Hanoi has the highest number of foreign residents.
    - Vietnam is one of the countries that has most motorcycles in the world.
    - The "Son Doong" cave in Quang Binh has been recorded as the deepest cave in the world, with nobody who has actually gone through the whole cave.
    - The world think we hate Americans, but nah, we love them now, while we hate being called Chinese most.
    - Businesses thrive here in Vietnam!
    - The largest and most beautiful island: Phu Quoc Island!
    N many more... :)

Let me tell you, smart people know the way to control them self, to not to do stupid things that not only hurt your self but also people around you, they also know what's the best way to develope their community, nowaday Vietnam's doing a great job to boost the economy with the crazy speed, our government focus on the center's cities because they are not stupid enough to put the heads of the economy next to the enemie's boders, that's why borders provinces are not rich, and not developed (if you can understand what i mean)
Don't bring your hatred to throw back to your country if you still calling your self Vietnamese.
I'm Vietnamese, i don't like China but i'm not stupid, i'll fight them at the right time i choose. Not because some one tell me things that even they can't confirm the infomations they have are true or not.
tips: You should learn the difference between "civil war" and "invade". Cheer! hope you will find more books and documents to improve your knowledge, may be some day you can build your own country. LOL!

    Vietnamese cuisine:
    south - sweet
    central - spicy
    north - salty
    south west - half cook/juicy
    central highland - mixed.
north west - smoked meat, stew, wild vegetable (most of them are herb, that's why north west Vietnamese are more healthier than others), (they also farming vegs but not usually).

    • @joshpham2203
      @joshpham2203 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@Trinh Nguyen "It is true for some families" BUT NOT ALL. Vietnamese never deny the fact that some Vietnamese has Chinese origins and in fact back in the day a number of Chinese came to Vietnam by boat to escape the ancient dynasty war in China and our king under Nguyen Dynasty allowed them to stay in Vietnam and later they went further to the South of Vietnam to explore new land along with other Vietnamese also some Chinese came to Vietnam to do business and trading stuff and later decide to stay. BUT you have to KNOW that our ancestors from the begining were NEVER and NEVER have Chinese origins or even have a Chinese blood, Ling DaSweetPie was talking about the princess"Au Co" whom are the mother of all Vietnamese, you should do more research on that, it called "the tale of Lạc Long Quân và Âu Cơ" to understand what she is talking about. Vietnam is a very diverse country which it has 54 different ethnic groups and Chinese is just one of them, the matter fact 80 % of the country are Vietnamese or "Kinh" people are the majority group. It is cool knowing that you are partly Chinese and other ethnicities not just Vietnamese BUT I encourage you to learn more about Vietnam and the history of Vietnam since now you are partly Vietnamese and having a Vietnamese last name

Vietnam's history is rich and evocative, which has fascinated many people worldwide. According to ENCYCLOPÆDIA BRITANNICA, "Relatively little is known about the origins of the Vietnamese. They first appeared in history as the so-called “Lac” peoples, who lived in the Red River delta region, in what is now northern Vietnam. Linguistic research, which offers a relatively reliable way of distinguishing the various ethnic groups of Southeast Asia, supports the mixed ethnic and cultural provenance of the Vietnamese people. Modern linguistics places the origin of Vietnamese in the Austronesian language group (Non-Chinese people) on the basis of similarities in morphology and consonant clusters. It is largely this linguistic link that has led scholars to speculate that Austronesians formed at least a part of the Lac population. Although Chinese civilization later became the main force in shaping Vietnamese culture, the failure of the Chinese to assimilate the Vietnamese people underscores the fact that strong elements of an authentic local culture must have emerged in the Red River valley long before China established its millennium of rule over Vietnam."

Julien Oppenheinmer In addition to its delectable cuisine and breathtaking scenery, Vietnam has a quite intriguing history. Studying world history, you'll notice that Vietnam has never lost any wars to any foreign invaders. Even the mightiest army in human history of the Mongol Empire met its match - the Vietnamese when beginning its southward expansion at the end of the 13th century.

I think no.1 most diverse, beautiful and cheapest country in the world should be Vietnam because of these reasons: Vietnam is just a small countries but it has many records: the biggest cave in the world (Hang Son Doong), most beautiful waterfall in Asia (Ban Gioc waterfall), the deepest cave in SEA (Hang Cống Nước), the deepest gorge in SEA (Hẻm Tu Sản), the longest lava tube cave in SEA (Hang C7), most beautiful bay in the world (Ha Long Bay), steepest natural waterslide in probably the world (Tà Ngào waterslide), largest sand dunes in SEA (Mũi Né), the only and most beautiful volcanic island in mainland SEA (Lý Sơn island), and despite being a country in tropical region, Vietnam has snowfall every year in winter (Sapa).

Vietnamese came from 2 Baiyue tribes: Au Viet and Lac Viet, not Han people but no doubt a lot of Vietnamese have Chinese blood mix since Chinese ruled Vietnam for a long time. Japan only ruled Vietnam for a short period of time and they didnt have influence on the Vietnamese culture as the Chinese and the French. Wonder how they got their info.

I think no.1 most diverse, beautiful and cheapest country in the world should be Vietnam because of these reasons: Vietnam is just a small countries but it has many records: the biggest cave in the world (Hang Son Doong), most beautiful waterfall in Asia (Ban Gioc waterfall), the deepest cave in SEA (Hang Cống Nước), the deepest gorge in SEA (Hẻm Tu Sản), the longest lava tube cave in SEA (Hang C7), most beautiful bay in the world (Ha Long Bay), steepest natural waterslide in probably the world (Tà Ngào waterslide), largest sand dunes in SEA (Mũi Né), the only and most beautiful volcanic island in mainland SEA (Lý Sơn island), and despite being a country in tropical region, Vietnam has snowfall every year in winter (Sapa).

the most interesting thing about Vietnam is land ownership.. the people do not own the land they live on. you buy a house, and the house is yours. but not the land. and that land can be confiscated. and many, many people have had their lands confiscated in Vietnam today. without reimbursement.

We’re not descendants of any Chinese princess. Âu Cơ is a fairy princess (mythical bird) from heaven, representing yin, and Lạc Long (Sea Dragon God from earth, represent yang). Their unification is that of heaven and earth, yin and yang, gave rise to 100 offsprings. As the children get older, they need to make their own living, Âu Cơ took 50 of their children to the mountain ... giving rise to the various highlander tribes, Lạc Long took the others towards sea, giving rise to other tribes. The moral of the story is that no matter what ethnic tribes the Vietnamese are from, we are of the same ancestor, coming from the same womb, thus, we should love everyone like family. The Chinese originate from nomadic people of the north. They had no agriculture and had to forage and hunt for food all the time to keep themselves fed. There’s no way they could have developed any form of culture when harsh winters prevented them settling down. It you can’t meet basic biological needs of shelter and food, what tradition/culture can be developed? Of the so-called 1000 years domination reigning over Vietnam (years 111-939), the Chinese have yet to succeed in assimilating Vietnam into being their people. We are proud to be descendants of those who kept true to our people and kicked those nomads out of our land. Please wiki Battle of Bach Dang. Why is the Chinese so fixated on annihilating the Viet? They want to make the stolen culture taken during their years of domination rightfully theirs. We’re the descendants of fairy and dragon, not some dumb Chinese princess.

Can you get the facts straight.
1-The first woman of Vietnam is a fairy, not a princess and 100% NOT Chinese.
2-None citizen like Ho Chi Minh and they don't like communism. The government forces them to follow.
3-Also, Vietnamese doesn't eat Pho when they are sick. It's not good for digestion. They eat chicken or pork rice soup when ill.
4-People are not forced to do abortion. They are encouraged not to have many children.
5-Also, Vietnamese was not mix with Japanese culture. They were only there few months.
6-Vietnamese people like brightening skin, not white skin ton. They consider white skin ton is for death people and they disgust by it.

I stopped watching it moments into the first one. It states that “The French came over in the 1950s...” At least one thing you don’t know about this video - that statement is wrong. The French colonized Việt Nam in late 1880s. The French lost a decisive battle at Điện Biên Phủ in 1954. Some historian pointed to the beginning of colonization in 1850s which makes it a 100 years under the French. Which makes more sense because Vietnamese people wrote songs about thousand years under the Chinese and 100 under the French.

I'm a Vietnamese and I should say number 3 is not correct. In our culture, the Mother named "Au Co" and the father named "Lac Long Quan", they met each other and have together 100 eggs. The mother then took 50 eggs to the mountain and the father took 50 eggs into the sea. This is how Vietnamese people, as a myth, born. We were not Chinese even though we do influenced a lot by our neighbor China after millennium of being dominated. I'm not talking politics here, just want to confirm about the myth.

You may have mistaken, in the first thing, the image you give is a peace, that is where the Japanese and Chinese have come to trade and build them, not all Vietnam.
Vietnam is influenced by French architecture, to Hanoi old town you find that very easy. But it is only a very small part of Vietnamese culture
