    When I was living in Thailand, one of the interesting things I saw was in text messages they use 555 instead of LOL. 5 is pronounced Ha in Thai. I just loved this and still use it even here in America. I get some confused responces though. 555

  • @ppyruvate
    @ppyruvate 6 ปีที่แล้ว +423

    So many ignorant points need corrections.
    1.) You should have done some homework about how to pronounce Thai names properly, especially if it's the kings' names
    2.) Relating to point 1, people shouldn't step on bank notes because they have the king's picture on. We Thais see feet as the lowest part of the body and it's rude to point feet to anyone, especially if that one is at the height of Thai society. However, people won't get fined or jailed for stepping on bank notes unintentionally
    3.) Transgenders and sex tourism are 2 separate things. Putting those under the same topic making unaware people generalise them easily
    4.) Not every monks in Thailand involve the tiger scandal, only those at that tiger temple
    5.) The walking fishes can't be seen on beaches, but at mangrove forests

      Namo Suksomyos In fact Thailand has lower crime rate than most Western countries and the Thai police takes a very serious against crime committed against foreigners. Prostitution exists in all countries not just Thailand...there is Batam Dongguan Amsterdam and countless more...why single out Thailand. It is the oldest trade in the world.
      Transgender is different from transexual...just as transvesities is different from ladyboy.
      Thailand is a Buddhist country where 90% of Thai citizens are Buddhists with religious freedom for all. A country of sincere smiles where differences are accomodated.

      Thanks for clearing this up with other people. I was born and adopted in Thailand and I’ve been wanting to learn about my culture and share with my friends and those who are curious. People in America don’t know enough about any other culture other then themselves. Coming to America I face a lot of stereotypes against with racial slurs and assumptions about a culture or race they assume I come from. Damn when I came to America a lot of people at school didn’t even know about Thailand or never met a Thai person. I actually was asked if TIES (like neck ties) grew on trees in Thailand and it wasn’t them making fun of me it was a legit question that they asked. Stupid questions may not “exists” but stupid people do 😂 even if you didn’t have knowledge of the country, what it gods name do you think that’s even logically possible

    I go to Thailand every year and never had a problem. Just act respectful and there will be no issues. Yes there some problems in the large cities but that's true in every country. Cheap to visit and I love the people. I recommend the northern region Issan. Better than south or central Thailand.

    Thailand is place that has a fit or lifestyle for anyone willing to relax, interact, and explore options/locations. The cost of living is a fundamental feature true, but what really shines about Thailand is the level of openness availble for respectful & kind visitors. of course no one, nor no where is (absolutely) perfect, none the less Thailand is a great place for the kind and gental to visit, live and of course find one self. ☆P.S If there is a bad event or day, be paticent and see what time will bring.

    #1 was not quite right. Thailand in the past called themselves "Ayutthaya" and Siam was only the term foreigner used to call them from that time. Nowadays Ayutthaya is just a district of Thailand but in the past that was the whole kingdom that even concluded neighboring modern days countries like Laos, Cambodia, and North Malaysia. That's why these countries has similar cultural root.

    Hi Aluxers!
    I've been to Thailand three months ago and I spent there 2 weeks and I can tell you that the criminality is very low.Thai people are very kind and respectful apart of the tuk-tuk drivers who can be a little too pushy.Thailand is a budist country and is part of their culture to be kind and respectful with others people.Very nice and interesting country, it's worth visiting.

    Gosh....you forgot some of the amazing things here in Thailand....in Fact...most of them...i can tell this was made for westerners and backpackers...but there are many of us here middlw aged and older....my list would be so different.....i am a little embarrassed actually. And not safe? Come on....maybe in Bangkok...but I live in Chiang Mai and have never felt safer...ANYWHERE..i even stopped locking my mountain bike when i go places...and have only expwrienced halpful, kind and truly beautiful people. Please remake and add the true Thailand positives! And i am from the US!

      ☺️ It’s about romanization.
      Thai Royal Household’s staff hold Sanskrit principle of romanization
      “ภ” is “p” sound like “พ” but in Sanskrit romanising
      พ = b
      ภ = bh
      then “ภูมิพลอดุลยเดช” romanising to
      => Bhumibol Adulyadej
      instead of “PUMIPOAN AADOONYADATE”
      In English, b & bh sound aren’t different much I think
      and never uses J as a following alphabet
      When English speaker see ‘dej’, they pronounce only ‘de’ and silent that ‘j’.
      That’s the cause they might mispronoune some kinds of Thai words.

      Im thai and lived in Thailand for 10 years before moving to the UK, then went back for a holiday. Id say its not that dangerous, just dont travel alone, especially for females but this goes for many asian countries. Especially dont get arrested and DEFINITELY dont use your feet to do anything other than walk, its very rude in Thailand to use your feet to move something, its just culture. just dont do anything stupid anf you should be fine :D have fun

      It goes for many asian countries, they will see you as an easy target if they see you alone. Assault, robbery, rape etc. stay in tourists areas, if you want to explore more, id advised to go in groups .

    I am planning on retiring in a little over 3 years (by December 2020). I am going to retire before I turn 50. I am seriously considering retiring to Thailand because of the food, culture, cost of living, healthcare and proximity to so many great places to travel to. As of right now I will either retire to Thailand or Build a Overlanding Expedition Vehicle and stay in the Americas (live in the USA now) and maybe travel around North, Central and South America the rest of my days.
    Oh this is such a hard decision!

    I spent nearly three years there. Yes it is a dangerous place, something many toutists have no idea of. If you know the dangers, the risks, you can be reasonably safe since most Thais are compassionate & typically caring. You have to be smart about going out into the general population. There are many pickpockets, thieves & muggers around so guard against it, especiallt at night.
    Go by taxi at night, keep your wallet away & well covered or concealed, aways assume the person you deal w/ may try to rip you off.
    There is a lot of corruption too, so if you're ever arrested or ever have to deal w/ the police, know that money will usually assure a favorable outcome. Typically it's only about a few bucks, so get used to it, it's merely the cost of doing business. Don't take it personally. You'll be happier for it in the end.
    That said, in most cases stick w/ the crowds, don't be very conspicuous, don't draw attention to yourself. Be kind & friendly, if strangers like your manner they'll be more likely to help you w/ kindness.

      It's true. One of our young soldiers had a baht note blown out of his hand by the wind. He stepped on it to keep it from blowing away. The Thai soldier who was on entry gate duty with him told the GI, don't do that. It is disrespectful to our king. The American GI, said it's my money, and stomped on it some more. The Thai police were called. The GI spent a year in a Thai jail. Stepping on a representation of the king is illegal and can get you jail time. Had the young GI apologized nothing may have happened. (He was a dumb farang). Don't catch an attitude. It will work against you. (A story from about 50 years ago).
