Getting shocked by an electrostimulation suit in VR

- What if you could feel actual PAIN in virtual reality? What if whatever game or simulation you were in allowed you to feel whatever was happening to you? Would you put yourself in pain just to heighten your immersion?
Today I am taking a look at two electrostimulation suits I tried, the hyper advanced and amazing Teslasuit and the newcomer on the block- OWO Skin. Two e-stim devices built to quite literally shock you, allowing your muscles to contract and pain to be felt through electrical pulses in the shirt/ suit. I'm honestly not sure if the world is ready for this, but it's coming anyways- and I'm so excited to see everyone's reactions.

This is exactly what I've been wanting for shooters. The stakes are so much higher, on a primal level, if pain is involved. You're going to take cover, check your corners, watch your back, etc. if you're at risk of feeling pain when you get shot.
my god definitely! it can make meele combat of games that lack saints and sinners style physics today so much more real!

I love the idea of wanting to avoid projectiles and obstacles because otherwise you'll get "punished" for not doing so. Just simple things like avoiding the corner of a table or something just increases the immersion by so much. Being able to feel things in VR is huge and I'd love to get my hands on this tech soon.
I was thinking about something like this in Pavlov might actually be a disadvantage, but it may actually make you better by conditioning you into improving solely to avoid pain. Brings a new meaning to the name Pavlov lol
Thrill, I just got to say this is one of your most well written and presented videos to date. You delivered such great information in an order that just makes sense, you kept each section short yet detailed, segues were all fantastic, and editing was on point and helped communicate what was happening with the suits really well. I don't know I just appreciated the hell out of this video and wanted you to know!
I can just imagine wearing this suit fighting something and then suddenly seeing a type of enemy appear that when hits you it hurts on the maximum level and you just think oh s**t
It would be really cool to have that progression of pain recieved as you fight stronger enemies. In games, most enemies have the same threat, it makes you lose health. How seriously you take them depends on how many hits you can take before you go down. So if the player gets stronger at a similar rate as the enemies, the threat level of most enemies remains the same.
With pain though...

Don't think pain will be a big factor for these devices. Shit has got to be safe before they allow it on the market for average consumer's. It's the cues on your body where the impact was. This will help you determine what just happened and will be the feedback you get, not so much the intensity of pain.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Maintenance is going to be something else.
Seeing the zipper, maybe you can roll it out kinda and wipe it?
@@PashaGamingYT It's going to be quite stinky if that's the case. It looks to be polyester/nylon that wicks sweat off of it, so that might help.
No problem. You can cover yourself in plastic wrap before putting the suit on to avoid sweating on it
@@Nonameron hahaha that will definitely make me sweat more.
This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for when I first read Ready Player One, from the fact that it’s something you can just wear to the fact that it can simulate different actions. I’ve heard about the Tesla suit a long time ago but didn’t give it any mind since it cost so much but now I can see that kind of stuff being as low as 1k in the near future. It’s so exciting to live through this kind of thing, it was only a few years ago when the first oculus was released and now look where we are
“A random bar at a VR industry meetup where the maker just happened to have a suit ready to test on the spot” is a weird way to put it. Super interesting suit nonetheless.

$20K? It's voltage being run across a set of flat electrodes, and a micro-controller to drive it. It sounds like something similar could be made for under $30. Open. Source. For. The. Win.
It uses different frequency and voltage levels to simulate different feeling, and also has the fullbody tracking mentioned. Def a bit more than a bunch of electrodes and a micro involved. I think even a DIY open source at $30 is much too low to be realistic. It of course could be done much, much cheaper and I've thought of ideas for something similar in the past. I imagine most of the price is really for their software, support, and that good ol' "enterprise premium". If someone where wanting to make a dummed down DIY version for much cheaper, I imagine a good starting point would be buying those muscle stimulator pads. They are $20-$30 and typically come with multiple electrode pads, and can zap at different frequencies and voltages. Would just need to replicate the drive circuitry for each set of electrodes, and put together a microcontroller that can control all those parameters. As for how it could be implemented into games, that's beyond me. I'm not really a software guy.
It also has fullbody tracking and tge software required to perfectly control it and sync it to your game is way too complex
Actually 20k was the springs and shit

I just wish to be able to try these things once in my lifetime. Not just a headset, the whole shebang
My guess is there will be places where you can pay for the whole experience. Put together the pieces you want and go into VR the exact way you want it, maybe for a reasonable price maybe for 100 an hour. If VR becomes common place enough it might be just like going bowling or paintballing.
@@DarkAvador I really hope so. I have a quest 2 but that’s about it. Don’t get me wrong, I love VR but I just can’t justify shelling out hundreds of dollars to get this stuff. I totally understand why people would if it was their main hobby, but I would rather just try it once or twice.

Ok, I literally am only 30seconds into this video, but I already see massive potential for games with friends... Think of it, being able to play "paintball" or "airsoft" with a group of your friends where you can feel pain, or those quizz party games where you give each other electric shocks or get shocked if you fail to answer a question/get a question wrong, not to mention the amount of youtube content that would generate of just watching people in pain - Mark, Sean, Bob, Wade, they would be hilarious (moreso than they currently are) in that regard... So much comedy potential!
I'm glad this exists, but for my personal experience, feeling pain is where I draw the line. Idk if I'm the only one
You could adjust this so that you only feel a little tingle, that's the best part

I just tried owo at GDC 2022, coolest VR experience I've ever had. It's like having a haptic suit with the weightlessness of a tee shirt but more intense and works in non-vr applications as well. Really excited to see where this company goes!
I can see how this will be interesting in another branch of adult entertainment.
😁
I play video games for stress relief (sometimes), entertainment, and for escapism. Not to feel actual pain.
Could you imagine if you were playing a Dark Souls styled game, only for another player to show up and back-stab you with a poleaxe? Imagine if you could actually feel it not only go right through your body, but also the sensation of bleeding and specifically part of your rib cage breaking apart. It would be awful.
Imagine being Ethan Winters in VR with a full body owo suit on. whew... man

"...on a years-old headset"
Me, looking at my own Quest 1: oof, didn't need a haptic suit to feel that one
At first I thought, "yeah sure I'd use this, though probably at one of the lower settings," but strangely enough when you described getting stabbed with a knife in VR, that's what sold me.
The idea of that kind of immersion, the shock, the high stakes, the realism, it just sounds incredible. Can't wait to see what VR is like in 2 years

@@JorgetePanete Well, guess I won't get one for myself after that
Broo. The owo suit looks excellent. I checked it’s support and it only has 1 VR game currently. If it gets even just a few VR experiences, then I’m 100% game. Tbf with all the difficulties of making a VR game in and of itself, I can’t see that happening soon, but looks fun.
I can only imagine when modders get a hold of this to glitch shock the Hell out of a Player in a shooter game.
owo skin + bhaptics suit = double immersion
oh yeah, it’s big brain time
This is a rather strange kink vr players wanna have like right now
What I really want with suits like this is the resistance to the pain, like you’re playing onward or pavlov, the better you resist the pain the better you’ll perform, and at some point it will be a battle on who has more pain tolerance. Thats what I want. Irl reactions to a combat scenario
One thing I'm curious about shirts/vests like this is how do you take care of them (such as washing them) as being active while wearing them will lead many to sweat while wearing them.
Thanks for your videos!!! You’ve really shown me how far vr tech has come and really made me wanna jump in watching your videos has got extremely excited for the future of vr 😁😁😁😁
This IS insane!
I'm just thinking about Onward 1.7 with this suit. The great graphics sure help with immersion but the slow, intense gameplay and the loud gun shots that blew your ears out were what made the game feel real. Like you were shooting a real gun and you are scared of getting shot as you duck behind cover. Now add this suit to that. Would be one heck of an experience.
6:54 this sounds like a monologe the villain makes before having an experiment go terribly wrong lol
This will take horror VR games to the next level.
It might actually make horror scary for me.
The only thing I worry about with electro stimulation is: What if the suit starts glitching out and basically locks your entire body? You can’t move your arms to unplug or switch it off. If you’re in a closed room and couldn’t pull the plug out by walking away, how could you turn the suit off? Idk his name, but this YTer said he could hardly move his arm with the TeslaSuit. I know this is pretty far fetched, but it’s just something to think about. I guess the devs can just put in a fail safe that switches the suit off after one or more parts of the suit have been active for more than a minute or something.
Battery gonna die sometime.
@@XAndrew88 I’d rather not have my entire upper body, including my diaphragm, be contracted for probably over 30 minutes. You probably couldn’t even breath, if your diaphragm is being shocked. Not sure if the shocks could reach it though.

Really though, can hardly wait till electro-haptics becomes mainstream and every day, and maybe even obsolete if/when we can just immerse our consciousness itself in like SAO... hopefully life longevity enhancing becomes a thing at the same time so we can live to see it happen!! :P
Finally, you were able to test Teslasuit. I already wanted to know what reaction you would have with him.
I speculate that the OWO combined with immersive gameplay could have a "rubber hand illusion" effect. Obviously electric jolts can only simulate a small verity of feelings but when combined with a convincing visual, like being stabbed, I think your brain could fill in the gaps of the sensation.
I'm even more hyped for this. Had already filled out the form that I wanna pre-order (Re: "I am interested, lmk when I can buy it" ) it and stuff. Great video.
If this comes to life...and hits the market...this will forever change VR and jumpstart non-gamers and non-believers in VR...to jump into VR. This is the stepping stone to the next level and will get more people into VR....and in turn...give developers more incentive to create games for VR and make money. Next step would be full sleeve shirt...then full body suit like those halloween costumes. We're heading into Ready Player One territory.
