Getting into a relationship has always been a gamble. What changed is that stakes went WAY up. Especially with modern anti-family courts. The most sadistic of rapists in modern society sit in these courtrooms and they're neither in prosecution nor defense.

As Orion mentioned elsewhere :love is not -and has never been- something that has to be “blessed” by marriage or the state or any kind of legality.
CS Lewis was talking mostly on a religious level. One can even argue about loving everything and everyone unconditionally. Spread the love. Why not?
As for the heart: it becomes hardened when closed in a casket. And wounded- sometimes multiple times- when it’s out in the open.

Man here. I have gone emotionally "all in" twice, and let me tell you, you really do have a finite reserve for that. Not only does the end of the relationship devastate you and mess up your life for a year or more, it can cause more or less permanent changes in the way you view relationships, and it makes it harder to ever commit in the future. Personally, I feel like I have one more full commit in me and do not think I would be even be physically capable of fully committing again beyond that if it didn't work out. A safer bet is to find someone you LIKE who is also stable and REASONABLE. Love is great while it's there, but the fallout can be permanently damaging.
That's kind of the whole point of emotionally all in - it will break you. Guaranteed.
The question is, why to do it?
The answer is, to go beyond yourself.
If you rearrange your values and your life you can break yourself over and over without limit...
It's only the hanging onto the past or "what might have been" or fear of the future that causes the damage.
Not saying there is a right way, saying that there is a cause and effect here that can be understood.
Look at it like this, you can lose sooner (breakup) or you can lose later (death). Either way you lose. If you want your love to transcend death and endings, then break yourself over and over until you stop resisting and fall into the endless abyss ... Or forgettaboutit.

Im out of full commits. My dream girl who listened to me, talked with me for hours, was knockout gorgeous, and a demon in the sack dumped/ghosted me after a year when I got Covid with zero explanation for what I did wrong. I will never get over it. You get a lot of fun memories and lot of s3x and a couple of children out a marriage, even if it ends in divorce after 10-20 years. Gambling gives just a lose/win of money. Gambling does not leave any lasting memory of fun and no critically important product like children. So the gambling analogy is ok but not that great.

100% agree. In Mexico, where i lived as a child and teen, they used to say "a las mujeres, ni todos el amor, ni todo el dinero" (transl: to women, neither all the love nor all the money"). I followed this advice in my early 30's, and I can tell you, it is accurate as per my life experience and that of my mates with what has happened in our relationships. I wish i had heeded it earlier, yet i am now still in one piece and in peace now nearing my 50's. Nowadays, I have no desire at all to have a woman around or orbiting. Once the hunger of the instinct is under control, there are very few upsides to be closely associated with a woman. I live quite content alone.

You didn't roll any dice. You played a safe bet. If things went awry you were at least guaranteed your stake or even a better outcome. Don't try to compare your situation to what men stand to lose. It is nowhere near the same. You're the house, you barely lose.

@@richien8472 That's one way of looking at it and I don't disagree. However, someone has to look after the kids and it's usually the woman. I have 3 degrees (teacher) but my husband (CEO) makes way more money than me. It made sense that I stayed home to take care of the kids. Loss of income, work experience/advancement, re-entering workforce after years at home, etc.. puts women at a disadvantage if the relationship doesn't work out long term. Yes, assets get split, however that's very short term and there's lots of life to live from that point on. There's great risk for both parties. Choose your partner wisely.
Best advice I've heard, especially regarding acceptable loss.
It is not about having disagreements it is how adult/emotionally mature you are to handle the differences. yes, everything changes. if you constantly suspect your loved one then you will bring on exactly what you fear the most. and, yes, relationships end. love lasts forever.

Don't get too carried away. The gambling analogy is ok but not that great. You get a lot of fun memories and lot of reliable s3x and a couple of children out of a marriage, even if it ends in divorce after 10-20 years. Gambling gives you just a lose/win of money. There definitely is a way around: when you treat relationships not only as merely transactional but also creatively (two people growing together). Then the other party stops to be a roll of dice but rather your relationship becomes a shared project, say garden. You're still not 100% sure of the outcomes but you may influence them to a high extent. Also, you can continuously reassess what portion of yields (all coming ON TOP of what you had) is reinvested as seeds, what is consumed and what is divided. Consequently, the vetting is rather for the ability to share and grow rather than to fulfill the evolving needs, which indeed is foolish.
This is assuming both parties have the same mindset.

One of the biggest reasons I ended my second marriage was she was a teacher. So her family, old friends, and a million kids came before me in our marriage, and I was living as if she was my #1. Nope.
All men and women in every state should be required to pass a test in order to receive a “marriage” license BEFORE they can legally marry. That test should include the financial repercussions of divorce(alimony/child support), exactly how it is calculated, and how the law treats child custody. AT THE MINIMUM.

I get that, I have felt that, and I agree, time may not heal yiur heart... but you can heal your heart. It's all about bringing yourself the love you were trying to get from others. As an adult you can be the father to your inner child you never had, you can care for yourself in ways that no one ever can or will. Then, you will have your heart back to 100%. It's possible!

If you loose your hand, it doesn't matter how enriched your body is - you still can't have your hand back. So, with Heart it's the same I feel. I can make tre remaining 98% more alive, so to say, but I'm not getting those 2% back...
R-e-d pill healed my heart after my ex divorced me after 27 years. I became rp-ed as f*ck. Now I go into relationship with 10% heart and I take whatever happens stoically.
This is why, even though it hurts being lonely at times, I’ve refused every opportunity for even a casual relationship that’s come my way. After looking everything over I can never seem to justify the potential rewards over the extremely high risk, especially with the way the world is today.

I love love, kindness, acts of service, sex, etc and I believe that relationships can achieve a level beyond this mortal coil and weather storms of great magnitude but unfortunately, this “gambling” parable in regards to relationships is very accurate and it’s very sad that the level of difficulty to get to that type of relationship goes up and up and up with all the influences around that constantly degrade relationships that otherwise could be wholesome and unbreakable.
Really appreciate this gambling analogy as it is spot on. Unfortunately, for most good men, the standard of keeping a commitment found in the pledge of " for better or worse" is the trap that takes men into living lives of disturbing desperation. It binds us to our word, our bond, even though coals of fire are heaped upon us. We're it not for the pain, we would feel nothing. Therein lies the trap. If we undo the bond, we move to a new level of pain that eventually drains any aspect of what we once possessed.

Oh, that is a good point! Men don't leave. Hell, I bet a lot, if not most men who cheat, don't even leave the relationship emotionally, they probably just get what they are missing and stay faithful in every other way (I have no idea if that is true or not, just speculation).
@@patrickjreid -- that is true. A man's cheating is very different from woman's cheating. When a woman cheats, she has emotionally and commitment-wise completely checked out. But when a man cheats (unless it is an emotional affair), he just got a release that means nothing to him. He still can be loyal and take a bullet for his wife.
The other rule of gambling is "pick the bets where the odds are in your favour but appear to be the other way around" - i.e. a "sucker bet".
How can we as men apply the same principles and pick a “bet” / woman where the odds are in our favor?
What are the internal / external qualities and circumstances to look for?
Let’s start to formulate this for the betterment of the male collective.. I’ll go first (see below)
External: prenup and/or not getting the state involved ideally in a formal marriage
Internal qualities/characteristics: kindness, receptivity, submissiveness, loyalty, duty, responsibility/accountability, compassion, patience. Non-promiscuous, non-easily bored. Not needing to be constantly entertained and validated by others and social media chasing attention and likes.
There’s gotta be more than this though

@@kevinkurgansky4479for external have your assets under someone else's name. Like your mom for example. The problem with internal is that these traits can be faked. Often after marriage and/or pregnancy a woman can reveal their true self and trap a man.

This way you can seemingly bet a large fortune but in reality there's nothing for the thief to get.
Better to pick a longshot horse than a longshot husband. - also a good rule in gambling.
The thing about 'Going All In', yes it took me more than 7 years to get back on my feet from that, the damage is just too damn much, now i am strong Enough to go all in again, the low was so low, but it makes me cherish the highs more, and i ask myself "isn't this what makes life beautiful, like michael scott says I'm ready to get hurt again? ", but i don't think it is worth it if it effect everything i do and everything that is around me.

The biggest risk in a long-term relationship is the other person changing in a way you don't like. My experience is the clues are there early, even while you're dating. But the volume is turned down so low you can barely perceive them.

People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.

This is an amazing perspective on that. I've always "felt the 12 months" rule in my gut just because you have to go through all the holidays/family dynamics to be sure, but you really lay it out in excellent logical fashion here. 100% agree with the cautionary approach. Also it struck me on the "one can only go all in emotionally a few times" in their life - that hit home, because I'm really on the fence on going all in ever again because that's about where I'm at but - maybe that's a GOOD thing this time.

Vetting is extremely important but in the end it is the roll of the dice. My wife and I just celebrated our 25 year anniversary and looking back of course there are moments when either one of us could have called it quits. Fortunately we continued to grow together and that was because of our committment. Vet her family. Make sure you like them and they like you. Extremely important. Maybe early on or if you have a conflict with her family it can validate you if she picks you over her family but long term that is a disaster. One of the things that will help keep the 2 of you together is if you and her both think again about quitting the relationship because of how much their family will be disappointed to lose you, etc. The family and community rooting for and protecting your relationship is key long term.

Who else would have a better vested interest in choosing the "best man" for the women of a society than fathers, given that an honorable one would have most likely had to take on the responsibility of raising children produced by a man chosen poorly by or for his daughter...

In my experience, the second a woman detects anything other than stoicism, they bolt. They like the challenge of getting an emotional rise. Once achieved, the game (the job?) is no longer interesting.
Also failing to achieve will make them bolt. Stoic or not, they will do whatever they want.

A poor investment with questionable people can lead to disaster. Similarly, investing well in your marriage and family creates lasting value that can be passed down through generations. Choose your investments wisely.

I’m coming to the realization that even though it’s a gamble and, yes I’m going to pay dearly, I’ve still got two children out of the deal which are priceless. You could argue they will turn out to be this way and that, but I’ll tell you they’ll be better off with me when they discover who their mother really is -when they’re old enough to see the evidence.
If the mother has indoctrinated them from an early age they will most likely always see only her side. Thats why the government wants kids in the public schools as early and as long as possible.

As a woman… a man is a gamble too…. Who is he really? How do you know he is not a jerk…. A long term relationship is a gamble or a leap of faith…. I was recently married…. But before marriage…. I told him point blank…. I if he turned into an asshole, I’d be done. Just treat me well…. Support me emotionally…. And work. I am the more financially secure in this relationship… and I insisted on a prenup to protect both of us…. So far we are great! And initially he was the adorer…. But I believe I am now his adorer…. It changed…. And leaves me a bit more vulnerable…. But so far he is worth it.

You already know that she wants your money and will leave you as soon as you don't do what she wants and will probably cheat on you. So what are you "vetting" for? Just to assess whether or not you are willing to go through all that, with the specific woman in front of you? Just to assess that it will "probably" be 5 years before she does all that - instead of 3 years? Or 12 years? Define what you are "vetting" for. Unfortunately no woman I've ever been with has been different - they all ended up the same - and started to fight with me over the same issues: getting bored, not getting enough attention or not getting enough money from me. It never seems to change.
