In this biographical drama, Selena Quintanilla (Jennifer Lopez) is born into a musical Mexican-American family in Texas. Her father, Abraham (Edward James Olmos), realizes that his young daughter is talented and begins performing with her at small venues. She finds success and falls for her guitarist, Chris Perez (Jon Seda), who draws the ire of her father. Fun facts: Prior to this movie J.Lo was a fly girl on the 90s sketch comedy show In Living Color & she was on the short lived 90s sitcom South Central. John Edward Almos the actor who played Selina’s dad wrote, directed & produced American Me.

I am from Corpus Christi and remember the day she was shot. It was a devastating day in Corpus!
What was it like that day ? I know they had a huge vigil
That day I was driving home when I heard the news of her passing. Everyone in Corpus was probably calling other family members and friends because I couldn't get my calls through. It would say all cruits are busy! Everyone was crying and couldn't get enough of her music playing on the radio. They did hold a vigil for her and there were so many people with poster, signs and candles! It took a while for Corpus to recover from her death!
if you havent already, you should read Chris's book about Selena called " To Selena, WIth Love". It details more about on how Selena was as a person without her Dad's involvement in directing every little thing.

I remember watching his interview of him talking about that song, it definitely is a love song for sure. It’s just the energy around it, also the construction of the melodies and beat in general is why it sounds so sad. But I’m actually happy that in the song there is a key change and you can kinda feel a shift in the song because of it

This movie hits hard. It's impossible to not cry at the end of it, especially when they show the montage of pictures and videos of her as her song "Dreaming Of You" plays. Being Mexican-American myself, Selena was basically our Princess Diana. She was incredibly talented and supremely kind, But ultimately died young. She was only 23 at the time of her death.

Her father did the right thing making sure she stayed true to her roots and broke the barriers through the tejano music scene. Everything was aligned right for her.

Tbh, it didn’t bother me. I feel the reason why people would think this is mid because they watched it wrong. For me I watched it as I watching the embodiment of Selena through Jlo and it was very tastefully done.

I look at Selena as a cautionary tale cuz not every bitch is your friend and sometimes you have to treat people at a distance here some stuff you might not know:Selena’s ring: it was purchased in January 1995 for $3,000 dollars and was swiped with Selena’s corporate bank card because Yolanda did pocket those ladies money. The motel used for the death scene is a real motel it’s the Super 8 in San Antonio, TX Ww White Road also when Selena dropped the ring in the ambulance that really did happen but in the movie it was J.Lo’s stand-in. The only song ever recorded by Selena at Q Productions was Dreaming of You and Q Productions is used for the I could fall in love scene.

I grew up in the border (Mexico) and when Selena died I was 5. My mother tells me that I cried for days. I do not remember much of it, but I do remember a flash of me crying in a pillow.

So glad you saw the father as a loving man and just pushed his children to be great. Everyone always just bashes the father. The way Sel, AB and Suzette love and respect their father says so much about him. Children grow up to hate and stay away from toxic/horrible parents. Not respect them like they always did/have.

I’m the same when the movie ends. I wasn’t alive when she was alive but I’m such a big fan of her since I was little. I’m always thankful to Selena for representing us Mexican American in such an amazing way. Not only that but being such a role model to so many young girls like me who grew up listening to her and am now a women. She was taken from us too soon but in those few years she gave us she made such a huge impact on this world.
