- Welcome back to my channel for the first video of my comeback recorded within Train Simulator! In this episode, I drive a full run on the Fife Circle route, heading from Edinburgh to Glenrothes with Thornton via Dunfermline, and return to Edinburgh via Aberdour.

A couple of notes for this video:
1. I got a bit tongue tied last night, so stumbled and stuttered on occasion in the video! Alas, I could have edited it out but decided to leave it in there - I am only human, after all!
2. I am aware of an issue with the game audio clipping slightly. I've recently learned this is likely to be the cost of the temporary fix I'm using to be able to play TS, so I can live with it.
3. Captions are back for junctions, tunnels, and crossings! I finally dug out my UK track atlas. I hope you enjoy having them back.
4. I realise I butchered some of the pronunciations, as is so often the case when making a video in an unfamiliar area. Thanks for all the corrections! :)
I'm recording to an HDD. I'll have a look at the bitrate and see if it makes a difference. We believe it was an audio issue causing the simulator to blue screen on me. By changing two audio files in the Railworks root folder to 'read only', it seems to have fixed the problem for now. But doing so seems to cause this clipping issue. I'll check again to see if it's present when I'm not recording.
Also, if you weren't aware, there's been a core update to TS2021 that allows for faster loading. Just add -fastload to the launch options in Steam
For pronunciations, you can always do an on-line search for "pronounce XXXX" for those you are unsure of.

Glenrothes, Glen-roth-ess.
Inverkeithing, Inver-keething, as in seething.
Rosyth, Row-syth.
Dunfermline, dun-ferm-lynne. (not leen)
Cardenden, Carden-den (rather than Car-denden.
Kirkcaldy, Kir-koddie.
Burntisland, Burnt-island.
Aberdour, Aber-dower. as in flower.
Interestingly, I was over some of this line today (I'm a guard and this is part of my territory).
That 75 over the bridge after Gateway is gone these days - Instead you get a 100/90 board at the top of the climb on the right hand bend out of Gateway, then a Morpeth after the bridge for the 80/60 board which is at the top of the hill before Dalmeny jn. (More or less exactly where the 80 speed board is in the simulator).
The 40 and 50 boards leaving N. Queensferry are far too generous aswell!
The 40 board is directly before the Jamestown viaduct (after the cutting) and the 50 board (actually a 50/35) is immediately after it.

You're absolutely right about multiple units being better suited to the stop start nature of the Fife circle route. Almost all trains on that route have been multiple units for decades now. Today its all 158s & 170s.
The reason class 67s (and later DRS class 68s) + mk2 coaches where ever used was to meet demand - as passenger demand on this busy commuter route outstripped the number of carriages scotrail had available to work busy rush hour services.
Consequently First ScotRail (and later Abellio) contracted EWS (and later DRS) to provide loco hauled 6 car trains for the morning and evening peak to cover the shortfall and meet demand.
With the electrification of the E&G; the rollout of new, electric class 385 EMUs; and Inter7city HSTs enough 158s and 170s were retained (many cascaded to Northern and East Midlands Railway) but enough where retained to meet passenger demand and remove the need for these rush hour loco-hauled services.
Thank you for the information, I appreciate it! Alas, the acceleration on a loco hauled service on this route is abysmal. I felt like it could be done at least half an hour quicker in a DMU with better acceleration and braking.
@@PTGRail few weeks back I had a 158 + 170 around the circle, but an electrical connection in the coupling failed so the 170 just idled the whole way with the 158 pulling. If you think the loco hauled services had poor acceleration!! Try climbing out of Inverkeithing towards the bridge with only 2 of your 5 coaches actually motoring! Flat out we hit 35mph and that was all she had to give 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks, I'll look into that! What's annoying is I mostly get well above 30fps when driving, but when recording and locking the game to 30fps lag is more noticeable. I'd record at 60fps if it was a stable 60.
@@PTGRail I understand you, this game can be very whimsical. I know from my experience that Ambient Occlusion and Adaptive Bloom must be disabled for better FPS. The view distance around 65% (so that the game does not load very long map distances), personally limiting the FPS to 30 gave me the most smoothness experience, and FXAA + 2x2SAA (or x3SSA) and disabling the FXAA from the Nvidia panel control . Recording the game I know it is different but you can try. look at TrainSimTV or AlanThomsonSim it looks good and they don't use so many graphic settings. it's all try, good luck and thanks for the videos !! I recently bought TS21 and I cut my (slow) learning teeth on the Fife Circle. It is partly because of this route that I bought TS21 since when I was a small child in the late 1950's, I used to travel with my parents between Dunfermline and Edinburgh over the Forth Bridge (there was only one bridge!) hauled by steam locomotives. Your hard work is much admired and appreciated - keep it up. Your videos help me be a better 'driver' although I still screw up stopping at the correct place on the platforms and lose valuable seconds getting there. Well done.
I hope you've been enjoying driving over this route? I've never been hear in reality, but would love to visit. Especially the section alongside the North Sea, it looks very pretty! I can only imagine what it must have been like to travel on this route when steam was on the main line, but I'm sure it was an amazing experience. Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate them. @@PTGRail Yes, it's a great route. Keep up the excellent work though it must take a lot of your time. I expect that many others derive not only pleasure from your videos but also insights that helps them be more successful and enjoy the sim even more. You are perhaps the Don Coffey of train simulations. If you are unaware his videos filmed from a real cab, it's worth a look at some of his work.
Audio issues were the cause of absolutely crippling issues I was having with blue screens of death in TS. It was the drivers for my soundcard in my PC. When I deactivated the soundcard in Windows' "Sound" dialogue, and reverted entirely to onboard (Mobo) sound, all of the problems literally disappeared. I have no worse performance using the onboard sound, and audio quality is just the same, so the PCIe soundcard has been binned! Great to have you back in TS, Pete !!!

Oh hey! Welcome back! Glad to see you back! As others have said, don't overexert yourself.
Another route that would be great for a route learning video, if you want an idea, is the Suburban Glasgow route by Iain Mackay; I've driven all the scenarios on the release version of the route (later coming to TH-cam, I've been delaying) and the route is lovely. Clydeside Direct might actually be a great scenario for route learning, as it's a trip from the terminus of Helensburgh Central to Springburn (which has a line beyond it and meets the Edinburgh-Glasgow DLC as well as turning off on another line towards Glasgow Queen). This scenario also has some adverse signals if you are on time, so it's certainly not a boring drive.
A second video can be made for the Maryhill Line, which is part of the same DLC and also has a scenario made for its service. There are a few stations that won't be seen at Balloch, Milngavie, Exhibition (I needed a Workshop scenario to get here), and a line along the Singer station, but most of the route is covered by these two scenarios.
He also has a West HIghland Line Workshop posting from January if you want to do the entire West Highland Line. It even features the Oban Line, another route option. This can also cover the Maryhill Line segment as you would cross through Maryhill and then away from Anniesland, which is the terminus of the Maryhill Line service. This route may take you through Singer. West Highland Line from Oban goes to all stations (Falls of Cruachan being summer only), merge with the line from Fort WIlliam, and continues all stations to Helensburgh Upper, then only stops at Dumbarton Central and Dalmuir on the way to Glasgow Queen over the Maryhill Line. That kind of drive seems like your thing. You can also start at Fort William and see what WHL South looks like, or even go all the way from Mallaig. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2355023456

I would highly recommend the Hudson Line route and the EMD FL9 add-on. You're not going to have any service that's much longer than an hour save for maybe some of the freight services, but it's quite scenic and with the P32ACDM and FL9 it requires you to switch between electric and diesel power in the areas north of Grand Central or Penn Station.

This used to (what I liked to call) the cattle train. Basically, the peak time - stuff everyone in - commuter that got everyone from Fife into Edinburgh for about 8:30 and then would leave Edinburgh about 17:25 to get everyone home again. Stopped running in 2018/19 and now it's a four car HST that does the run. Thornton is a key area in the history of Rail in Fife. Look up the East Fife Coast line if interested, used to run from Thornton to St Andrews all the way around the fife coast. Today, large parts of it is the Fife Coastal Path

On a side note, do you know if there’s an up to date map of UK routes? I’ve found one online as a PDF but it’s fairly out of date. Saying that though, it’s maybe better for my wallet that I don’t know!

Thank you! Each video represents a significant investment of time - something I think sometimes people fail to appreciate. However long a video is, times that by 5 or 6, and that’s how many hours work it takes roughly to learn, record, and edit.
For maps I use the full UK track atlas, which I bought specifically for making videos on this channel. That’s where I get junction, crossing, and signal names from for the captions. Alas it’s not free of course. Not sure what the best free source would be.
The S car stop markers are there for the Scotrail Inter7City HSTs. They have white strips at the top and bottom saying Scotrail HST irl.
And for shorter 15x/170 services too.

Hey PTG. Is there a possibility for a route learning video on the Semmeringbahn or the Tirol Brenner route. Both go up and down mountains. Both are austrian routes with the Semmeringbahn being a more slow paced route with max speed being 80 most of the route and the Tirol brenner has highspeed lines with one skipping innsbruck but there are also the normal long 160km/h max lines also passing innsbruch and then continuing up the brenner.
Apart from the questionable pronunciation its nice to see my local line and station in the game. Worked at some point in most of the stations around the circle and some that arent there anymore.

Yeah, a 67 for stop-and-go service is a bit ridiculous! And, personally, I hate the variable braking control. Give me a notched brake, every time! That said, you did a bang-on job. Those uphill starts are infuriating, though! 🙄

By the way, the clicks and pops might be a windows 10 issue since the install of build 1903. Ever since it installed on me late 2019, I've noticed that videos tend to cause some kind of memory leak on my computer. It has not gone away on 2004. The only option I've been suggested by MS is a driver refresh using their boot version. Others have installed new motherboards to fix the issue. I am also debating putting my Windows on a new and larger HD and using the current one for files. I've noticed the problem when trying to play Euro Truck Simulator 2 and I notice the engine audio clipping periodically. The worse it gets, the sooner I need to reboot.

As far as putting a 67 on this route is concerned, it may just be a lack of rolling stock. Or a temporary stand in, but who knows. The Forth bridge is sure a sight, I'll need to take a ride over it one of these days.
Someone else told me it was due to the need for increased capacity but there were no extra units available, to they managed to contract EWS to supply a loco and get some coaches to use these sets on peak time trains only. I think it was two services a day - one in the morning, the other in the evening.
@@PTGRail That sounds about right. I remember a local route when it became operational had to use temporary dated DMUs until the units bought for the line could be moved and tested, I never managed to ride it with the old stock though, just the new units built by Stadler.

Currently running on an Intel Core i7 4790k, 16gb RAM, and an Nvidia GTX 980 graphics card. The build is around 5 years old now, and it was built specifically for recording in TS back in late 2015, a year into the channel!

Why didn't you use an actual train like the Class 380? That's perfect for this route
The fife circle is a diesel only line
The Class 380 couldn't run on this route, as this route is not electrified. I chose to use a train which ran on an actual scheduled service in reality.

Good video but you do need to work on your pronunciation of Scottish place names. Not Glenroathes its Glen-Roth-Es, for Burntisland it is literally pronounced Burnt-island as in an island that has been burned. Not a biggie but does take the gloss off an otherwise very good and informative video. Would be happy to help or advise you in future - particularly with Just Trains 'Highland Main Line' due for release soon.

Excellent, but note it's pronounced Glen-ROTH-es (3 syllables), not Glenrothes rhyming with rose. It's CardenDEN (stress on last syllable). And it's Burnt-island, as though it were an island on fire!
I never get the pronunciations quite right in Scotland! I don't mind being corrected. I thought it was prounounced Burnt-island in the past, but got corrected on a very old video I made on the SECML! Now I'm not sure which it is hahaha

Instead of saying 2,467 metres just say it 2.4 km. from what I am seeing this is another excellent route to be added onto sister game train Sim world 2 so that Xbox Series X players and PS5 players can experience this provided you're active on forums.dovetailgames.com
