      As an Ethiopian who is old enough to remember the violent disintegration of Yugoslavia, I hope and pray that my ethnic group would be as lucky as Slovenians and not like the Croats and Bosnians.The Bosnians had the worst of it because they had no means of defending themselves at the beginning.
      The ugly disintegration of Ethiopia is not a matter of if but when!

    • @Ass_of_Amalek
      @Ass_of_Amalek ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lizzyinthecut3617 I'm not. my point is that there are different circumstances to consider to determine whether a breakup of a state is a net benefit. namely the differences between russia on one hand and ethiopia and yugoslavia on the other hand include the capacity and desire of the russian state and the russian people for imperialist aggression, which make a continued existence of russia dangerous to many of its eurasian neighbours. this can not be reasonably expected to be solved by a mere overthrow of putin, or even the establishment of a liberal democracy - that sort of national reprogramming against supremacist ideology tends to require a major defeat and the forcible control of governance and education by the enemies of the former power structure, as in germany, japan, or rwanda. and that's not going to happen to russia. or, as far as nations can reform themselves, the russian people are not at all hopeful candidates for this, since the russian government and its ideology are aupported bx a majority of russians,.while the majority of the rest very thoroughly buy into the alternative government-promoted belief system that declares the people to have no power and thus no culpability for their country's actions, and to be fundamentally incapable of knowing what's true and what isn't.
      the major downside is that it is difficult to imagine a breakup of russia that would not yield catastrophic consequences in the transfer of control over russia's giant and widely distributed nuclear arsenal, which makes a breakup of russia quite unappealing. but the cost-benefit ratio still depends on the likelihood of a continued unified russia using those nukes - if the chance is sufficiently high, then the greater harm they could do with a unified arsenal would make the breakup option the less bad one. also, for the purpose of such considerations, russia achieving success with nuclear threats is to be considered a use of nuclear weapons. either way, nukes are a substantial difference to ethiopia and yugoslavia.

    As an Ethiopian, I want to tell you something
    In Yugoslavia, everyone wanted to be free and independent, in Ethiopia nobody wants this, rather everyone wants to control the rest of the country, everyone wants to be the master, first it was the imperial amharas, a pause with communists, then EPRDF tigrians, and now many claim it's prosperity oromos, it's seems like it's like that, but it's debatable.
    What I want to say is, don't worry, Ethiopia won't disintegrate, but it'll keep eating itself like forever maybe

      But if the national government of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa can't seem to get the national identity of "Ethiopians" to persist and override the idea of the various "tribal identities" within it's borders well...
      Then it's going to be a difficult one for the nation of Ethiopia going forward

    Some corrections:
    1) DERG was not an Amhara government that starved its people, CIA declassified information shows that it was an Oromo dominated government led by an Oromo, Mengistu Hailemariam.
    2) Amhara did not annex “Western Tigray” because they needed fertile land, Amhara is one of the most fertile regions with 80% of the Blue Nile originating from the region. TPLF annexed that land, which was named Welkait, 33 years ago from Amharas because they needed the fertile land and wanted a border with Sudan. They ethnically cleansed Amharas off that land and renamed it “Western Tigray” when they were in power for 27 years. And as you stated in the video they also killed 1600 Amharas in Mai Kadra at the start of the war 2 years ago.
    3) Amharas did not ethnically cleanse Tigrayans from Welkait at the start of the war 2 years ago. But many of the Tigrayans that were settled there by TPLF when they were in power to demographically engineer the population did flee to Tigray when war started out of fear that they might face retaliation for the crimes TPLF had committed on Amharas for 33 years.
    4) The main catalyst for the current war is the US government that sees TPLF as a loyal ally that protected US foreign policy interests in the region when they were in power for 27 years. The Pretoria “peace” agreement that was signed between the Ethiopian government and TPLF last November was not a peace deal but a US government sponsored war pact between TPLF and Abiy to go after Amharas so that Welkait or what they claim is “Western Tigray” is returned to TPLF and in exchange Abiy gets IMF and World Bank loans to save the economy. And once TPLF gets Welkait in their hands and have a border with Sudan, they would be supplied with enough weapons by the US to bring about regime change in Eritrea. At least that was the plan until Amharas and Fanos said not on our watch. Amharas have been facing genocide over the past 30 plus years and at a large scale since Abiy came to power. Now Amharas have risen up to remove Abiy and the US government is scrambling to save its failed Pretoria war pact.

      @phoenix0000 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Your story is an abject lie. Ethiopia follows ethnic federalism. Thus, those who settled on Wolqayit area are majority ethnic Tigres, which immediately warrantees the land be given to Tigray. If tplf wanted to change the regime in Eritrea, it would have done so when it was controlling the Ethiopian throne. Rather, Amhara are wanting western Tigray so that there could be a corridor to smuggle weapons from Eritrea and food and other commodities to Eritrea. Eritreans lifeline depends on Ethiopian economy. That's why they hate tplf with all their might. Because it fended them off exploiting Ethiopian economy. Now Eritrea has got a new chance to reattach its tentacles on the Ethiopian economy through the Wolqayit corridor. Amhara are rebelling on Abiy feeling confident that Eritrea will help them as long as they allow the latter to trade through Wolqayit.

    fano is a historical term used in Ethiopian struggles against injustice and foreign invaders. It is mainly shown as a youth movement that has played a significant role in preserving the concept of Ethiopian nationhood. As a youth group, it has emerged from within the Amhara ethnic group and has features of reminiscent of classical political, religious, or even social movements that drive youthful frustrations into acts of agitation until they achieve a measure of reform. Traditionally, the Fano struggle had focused on fending off attacks against Ethiopia. In recent years, Fano has become a household name and a crucial movement tasked with saving the very existence of the Amhara population as well as the integrity of Ethiopia. In this, it differs from other similar youth movements in the country, whose aim is to dismember the Ethiopian state into ethnic components. Fano is made of a defiant and patriotic youth which is able to shoulder an Ethiopia that is arising from the ashes bequeathed to them. This revolutionary generation and movement has to be nurtured. Fano is not just an embodiment of the physical defiance but also an intellectual movement that abhors ethnic fascism, narrow nationalism, apartheid policies, internal colonialism and all forms of pseudo-legal acts of political corruption. Instead, it upholds a civic sense of public duty, patriotism and vision for the good of the entire country.

    This is an excellent insight into the current Amahra crisis.
    1) Amharas were betrayed in the disputed region issue under the guise of the Pretoria Accords.
    2) The dissolution of the Amhara Special Forces was pushed through too early and rashly at the wrong time before the dispute with Tigray could be settled.
    3) The continued massacre and expulsion of ethnic Amharas from Oromia and Benishangul are not seriously addressed to stop it.
    4) The affair behind Addis Ababa and the city of Sheger is secretly aimed at tormenting ethnic Amhara and curbing Addis Ababa's expansion. The overwhelming majority of the people in Addis Ababa are ethnic Amharas. Despite this fact, the police in Addis Ababa are predominantly ethnic Oromo.
    5) The Amhara's selective refusal to travel across the country and into Addis Ababa and the harassment of the already angered ethnic Amharas provoked them into rebellion.

    1. The Amhara population is not just 27%. If there were a recent and more comprehensive census, the number could exceed 40%.
    2. The Mikadra massacre was perpetrated by the TPLFs, and they killed hundreds of Amharas, not the other way around. This is a critical error. Please fact-check and refer to multiple international human rights organization reports. Let's avoid blaming the victims. This is much different from Yugoslavia. For one, Yugoslavia was legit a freshly minted country (and if I recall correctly it was the League of Nations that formed Yugoslavia out of pieces of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire) whereas in the case of Ethiopia it’s borders have expanded and contracted for thousands of years due to varying factors. Axum, the Ethiopian Empire, and the Adal and Ifat Sultanates have all attempted to bring the region under one banner. Something that Mussolini succeeded in doing, really sad when you think about it.
    As a result, much of the country has cultural overlap. This phenomena of potentially self inflicted balkanization really began with the Italian occupation and was later accelerated by the brutality of the Communist era and then later the ethnofascist TPLF era which went out of its way to emphasis tribe over nationality as a divide and rule tactic. It’s interesting how so many of their crimes have been swept under the rug once they left but many vulnerable groups had their land snatched from them. Truth is, when the Derg left the people didn’t have any say in what was going to happen next. It was all imposed upon them and no one cared because the Derg was so brutal. It feels like the same might be happening now but time will tell.
    While it’s difficult to present concrete evidence on this particular claim, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Egypt’s govt was behind a lot of the instability. Many Ethiopians can recall the leaked video of Mohammad Morsi and his cabinet discussing options on how to bring Ethiopia to heel over the GERD issue and one of the methods was influencing and financing separatist groups (they named the Oromo in particular) to help sow chaos and instability in the country. Egypt and Ethiopia have had hydro political tensions since the time of the Pharaohs.
    Overall, I think the biggest issue with this topic and the region as a whole is that there’s generally no honest dialogue. From the years of war vs Eritrea, to the Oromo question, to the very idea of what an Ethiopian is. No one is ready or willing to have a real discussion. Just a bunch of emotional and embarrassing shouting matches while other nations with less prestige and history pass us by. How anyone can have time to politic over ideological bullshit when everyone is starving is beyond me.

      I would just like to correct you in that, ethnic groups that have existed here, were most former south Slavs, and have been here for a little more then a thousand years. Yugoslavia was a strange creation, but some basic, common roots always existed. Some countries were under Austria Hungary, most were under Ottoman empire, yet distinct orthodox christian, catholic christian and Muslim religious identities existed for centuries to millennia.. We also had common language for the most part, so in the era after WW2, it made sense to make a large federal republic and make sure that interests of your own people are being represented inside this bigger, mightier country, where we all respond to attacks from without as one. Like mini EU.
      When the war starts, every side embellishes the truth to an extent at best. At worst, it just portrays real or imagined "enemy" war crimes, which makes it harder and harder to get any sense of what objective truth is, what are the goals of each groups involved in the conflict and could there be long lasting peace and what is the bare minimum that each of the groups needs to stop the violence and get back to finding better, long lasting, diplomatic solutions..

    The main cause of the problem lies in the “Constitution “ of the government. Ethiopia is probably the ONLY country where the Federal States are divided based on ethnicity. This is the root cause of the problem, which created division and animosity among its people. This has been set up by Tigrayan and Oromo political groups which has always sought of independence from the rest of Ethiopia. Amharas were sidelined in this process, because they never had a group fighting for independence, but rather a unified Ethiopia. So, Amharas were defined as “unitary” by the Tigrayans and the Oromos, who deeply wants the division and ultimate disintegration of Ethiopia. Everyone can now see that the Fano militias of Amhara Region has put up the “Ethiopian “ flag when it started fighting this war, unlike the Tigrayans and Oromos who different flags. Amharas never asked for independence and in fact voiced against the ethnic based Federal System and Ethnically Constituted Regional Governments. One has to keep in mind that Aboy Ahmed got the full support of the Amharas when he came to power, just because he labeled himself as a “Unifier” of Ethiopia, even though he was an Oromo.. If ethnic politics were to abolish, Ethiopia will again be peaceful and unified. May God keep ALL Ethiopians safe and United !!!

      The formation of regional states cannot be reversed. It is too late and would be a good reason for further tensions. We will see more new states coming in the future. But banning ethnic parties but supporting ideologically based national parties based on common values, as in the US or Western Europe, could offer Ethiopia the best possible chance.

      When there were no ethnic states and a unified nation with the Amhara as the leaders you’ve murdered and subjugated others that’s why the ethnic regional states were created to do some kind of power sharing. But if u put 1 central government that government starts to get power hungry and ultimately starts to incarcerate any opposition then ultimately turns to violence and subjugation. That’s why Ethiopians don’t want a central government. The federal system is a better system for any state with different ethnicities

    Two things I want to correct you. First of all, DERG wasn’t Amhara. It is a majority Oromo-controlled party. Unlike today’s political system, Derg wasn’t made up of ethno-nationalists. It was more like Ethiopian nationalists. The second one is that the place you call western Tigray was taken by force when TPLF came to power after massacring prominent Amharas in the area and relocating TPLF fighters to the area then forcing Tigray identity by forcefully impregnating Amhara women while killing Amhara men. Tigray identity was also forced in the education system and workplace. What Amharas are doing is that they are retaking their own land and reclaim their identity. Unlike other factions who are fighting in Ethiopia, Fano is fighting for equality, justice, and the right to live. The rest are doing power struggles while Fano is fighting for the safety of the people!

For example, a large portion of the Oromo liberation army members who came back and disarmed were imprisoned, killed, and/or disappeared.
    In 2020 alone, the government troops went on a rampage through Oromia that left thousands of civilians dead and many many more imprisoned or disappeared. There were also a great deal of looting and burning down of homes by the government forces.

      For as much of a shiny corporate mantra it is, "diversity is our strength" couldn't be further from the truth. Ethnic fault lines have been the cause of the majority of warfare for centuries. Even the United States, the shining city on a hill, has been dragged into a civil war over slavery of a racial minority, and they are still ravaged to this day by race riots. Marcus Garvey, a leading Jamaican Black ethno-nationalist, brought out far larger shows of popular support among American blacks than pluralists like MLKJ ever did. Europe has been a prime example, with ethnic hatred bringing about both world wars, Serbian nationalists assassinating a tolerant Austrian leader for the first, and the infamous ethno-nationalist Nazi party rising in Germany for the second, and with pretty much every European empire bringing conflict elsewhere with colonialism. Asia has constantly been in cycles of ethnic cleansing and rivalry for ages now, with China actively conducting a genocide in Xinjiang, and older instances of ethnic abuses by the Japanese, and Chinese empires stretching back centuries. There've been intense ethnic conflicts in the likes of Afghanistan as well, and in other parts of the middle east. There were strict caste systems in India, as well as racial castes across former Spanish empire in Latin America. Africa practically speaks for itself with this very video.
      Humanity is rampantly racist no matter where you look.

    • @ExcooseMwah
      @ExcooseMwah ปีที่แล้ว

      @Flight_of_Icarus This is true to an extent, but it's a bit more nuanced than that.
      As much as it is natural for humans to be tribalistic, it is also often natrual for them to mix with one another. Humans love sex as much as they like tribalism. These warfare are not always long lasting since usually there may reach a point where they've mixed with each other so much that their differences are only lessened. Many nations are a result of many groups mixing, being displaced, or even in some instances living in relative harmony. Many nations now, in a way, are and were built upon multicultural societies. By this, I simply mean the existence of multiple cultures within a space. They may become assimilated, absorbed or even exchange their cultures, but there is often a dominant culture.
      It's not always been pretty, but humans have always been diverse and have benefitted from trade from other groups and civilizations due to the transportation of ideas.
      Globalism has really changed how people migrate from place to place within a short period of time.
      While humans can be very tribalistic, we are also naturally very curious as well and interact with one another a lot. Many groups that exist now are often created by millions upon millions of years of this rather than being 'pure' in any way.

    Many inaccuracies. For one, Amhara people didn’t flee to oromia to flee famine. “By 1986, according to Mulatu Wubne, the government had resettled more than 600,000 people. More than 250,000 went to Welega; about 150,000 settled in the Gambela area of Illubabor; and just over 100,000 went to Pawe, the largest planned resettlement in Gojjam and largely sustained by Italian financial support. In addition, another 78,000 went to Kaffa, Shewa, and western Begemder.” Look up the Derg resettlement plan.
    Simple research can be be done. They voluntary moved in the 2000’s. That’s why it’s key to get factual information from residents or not second hand information.

    Ironically, theft of Ogaden by the British during the colonial era partially played a role in political instability in Ethiopia.

    Your assessment is to the point and well researched, except two fact you didn't mention. 1. Eritrea left Tigray after the war and their military moved to a town called Badme, where Ethiopia returned to Eritrea's control. 2. Wolqite was populated by Amhara (100%) before TPLF took power and Wolqite was never ever part of Tigray. After TPLF took power, TPLF made it part of Tigray.

      Amhara region was created by Tigray welkait census pre 1991 300,000 Tigray 25000 Amhara. So even if it was under Begemeder bcs Haile Selassie annexed it, it was still occupied by Tigrayan. And Welkait as well as Welkdia, Lasta were part of Tigray before Haile Selassie the Tigrayphobe annexed it.

    It's nice to hear the story told by someone not involved in it. Around the end is where my eyes filled in tears, not only do we have to face economic struggle, but if it's true we are the generation that killed our country. We all as Ethiopians should stop being defensive and face the music, shit is not looking good.
