There's recently been another surge of fighting in Amhara, the second largest of Ethiopia's regions. However, while many may see this as just another of Ethiopia's conflicts, it has the potential to be far more serious. Indeed, it even raises questions about the future of the country. But what do you think? Is this a fundamental threat to Ethiopia? Or is this just another crisis that will eventually pass? And who do you think is in the right - or wrong - here? Have the Amhara been badly treated? Or is this payback for their centuries of dominance? As always, I look forward to your thoughts and comments. (By the way, I'm afraid this one is a particularly tricky situation to follow! Seriously, I'm putting this up there with Bosnia and Lebanon. I did my best!)
@@JamesKerLindsay I don't think that the Amhara felt betrayed by the Federal Government due to peace agreement with TPLF. This feeling may be on some poor elites from abroad. But I guess Fano's movement is triggered most by killings and cleansings of the Amhara in Oromo and other regions. Government was in a position to control the situation but chose to disarm the militias including the peasants. That clashed as the Amhara have a history of owning a rifle from long ago. In fact there is a power struggle between the Oromos and Amharas as the Amharas are currently complaining of being discriminated systematically from Economic, Social and Technological affairs Yes, there is a looming risk of Ethnic clashes which can only be triggered by elites from politicians, activists and scholars. The people have intermaried, lived together for centuries with little quarrel.
As a Tigrayan/Tegaru I think that every ethnic group in Ethiopia has had their moment of persecution so its only fair the Amhara get what they gave. No sympathy and I'm with Abiy on this one.
@@JamesKerLindsay James, how much did you get paid by Egyptian government to write this nonsense and to upload this video? The western media always want to talk trash about Africa.
@@JamesKerLindsay The Amhara Fano as they call themselves, are basically rebels without a cause...for one they are so disjointed that each group eg. Gojame fights Gonder, and Wello fights N. Shewa and visa versa, they have skirmishes with militia forces sent by the Amara administrative region that in most cases has been part and parcel of the rebels using the young to make their own political gain... Their precursor complaint was the killings in Wellega of Amara's pushed and instigated by disgruntled Diaspora's elements who felt ignored by PM Abiye, they started funding these groups here and there turning them into highway robbers, who have been terrorizing citizen's into submission through fear...schools have been none functional, same with rural health clinics causing miscarriages and even death of expecting mothers...Elders sent to find out their needs are held hostage and money is demanded. These hooligans are not about any serious political agenda or change. They have frustrated the people in general even parents or family members who would hide these so called fighters, but lately that has changed since they have become total highway robbers, and are also being corrupted by foreign forces...The government has tried to negotiate with the almost 8-,10 different groups but since they do not have a clear agenda or cause they keep pointing fingers on one the other, some of the leaders have surrender to the Military out of fear of being killed. The Shene which is the Oromo group has been decimated by the Military force and a two time effort to come to some kind of an agreement has failed with the government they also are blaming each other for the failures that they have encountered and are slowly but surely loosing badly.... So to your question Ethiopia is going through some clean up of old left overs, but forward looking to a greater future...No we will over come as One Ethiopia.

Thank you, Professor James K. Let me first ask you to rectify that Amhara is the largest Ethnic group in Ethiopia. Even in the socalled Oromia (which is the ancient Amhara land, i.e., before the Oromo Migration the land was inhabited by Amharas and other ethnic groups). I can say that your report is the first in its kind that sheds a light about the Amharas resentment & suffering for many decades. I think you very well understood that there is no Ethiopia without Amharas. It is the indigenous Amharas who established, defended, and developed Ethiopia (to be PC with other Ethnic groups). Despite the shocking Human Rights Violations, Amharas still want the unity and territorial integrity of Ethiopia but they will not compromise their well-being and security hereafter. Thank you very much again for this very educational report.

This belief of “no such thing as Amhara” and “invaders from Yemen” is unfortunately held by the leaderships of Ethiopia, who have all slowly been replaced by an Oromo. We have heard Abye and others repeat versions of this many times. The Amhara and all freedom loving Ethiopians have no option but to keep struggling.

Typical western misinformation, they take it from tplf olf mouth, it's nothing to do with disarmmemant rather unspeakable atrocities Genocide Amhara suffered
The main reason for this ongoing Amhara vs federal government conflict is not the PRETORIA peace agreement, But the ongoing Amhara ethnic cleaning in Oromia region of the country and less efforts taken to stop it from the federal government. Badly the federal government started to disarm the Amhara militias while no guarantees to keep the Amhara people safe in the country. The Amhara people has been under constant persecution for the last 50 years. They are discriminated, murdered en mass and detained in concentration camps in large number just because of they are Amharas. Tplf introduced ethnic based politics in order to divide and conquer, by mainly excluding the Amharas and blaming them for all historical ills the country went through. The Amharas highly participated in the struggle to oust the Tplf apartheid regime, but what came after TPLF has become one of the worst regime the world has ever seen. The ruling regime has made the Amharas identify the cause to persecute and murder the people for no apparent reason. The Amharas are now not allowed even to travel to the capital city. Numerous times the people peacefully demonstrated to demand that they right be respected like all other ethnic groups. However, the government chose to send its huge military to the region to silence the opposition which triggered the current Amhara resistance. It is highly possible that the country could descend to a more protracted civil war the outcome of which could be a catastrophic disintegration. The international community seems to have paid a deaf ears to the plight of Amhara people. The regime is bombing civilians and and destroying the meager infrastructure the region has. From sticks targeting schools and religious institutions is a frequent occurrence. The Amhara people have no option but to keep fighting to have their rights and dignity be respected like all others. If the government keeps its mercilessly genocidal war, eventually the country could collapse unless Fano gets the upper hand in the war and manage to stabilize the country

My opinion is that your report omitted to many important points in the name of simplicity. Points ignored were; 1. Ethiopia has strategic importance to world powers who never wish to see a strong united country. 2. Ethnic Federalism was designed and implemented by the western backed TPLF to achieve the disintegration of Ethiopia as one country back in 1995. 3. The Amhara were the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia in 1991 when TPLF took power and there numbers have dwindled at an alarming rate since. Some see this as a hidden genocide as although the EU produced a report on the issue it was not widely published and some say blocked by those supporting the TPLF in its efforts to reduce Amhara influence. 4. The ethnic cleansing of Amhara living in Oromia and other federal areas increasingly in recent years with little to no government action taken to protect those people. 5. There are many armed groups but the government's attention is only on the Amhara? Possibly due to the fact that the Amhara are nationalists and identify as "Ethiopian" makes them the biggest threat to a country mired by civil conflict driven by Ethnic Federalism. In summary: your report, while interesting, lacks so much detail that it lends itself to anti-Amhara propaganda, to which, if that was your intention, I can only praise your effort. As to the subject, a civil conflict is sadly inevitable in my opinion at this point and we will only know the outcome when the smoke clears. I expect that the Amhara are far from leaderless as they are still standing. We may find they have a more diverse and modern

We get stopped everywhere we go and get beaten up taken for ransome and end up killed. We can't continue this way. Amharas established the capital city Addis Ababa, but are being chased out. It is very sad. Barbaric Abiy Ahmed is very dangerous.
@@JamesKerLindsay sir thank you for speaking about this given the fact that it is a hiden and silent genocide. However, you missed quita few important informations. As per " western Tigray", it has never been part of Tigray province in history. It was inhabited by Amharas before 1993. When TPLF came to power, it displaced native Amharas and inhabited TPLF fighters. Some Amharas immigrated to USA, England and some other countries. Some Amharas protested TPLF's move but got all killed. Since then there has always been an Amhara movement to bring back the land. If you read history books that was written by explorers or Ethiopians, the border between Amhara and Tigray is the river Tekeze( an Amharic word for sad). When the river gets flooded Amhara and Tigray people couldn't meet. So they named the river sad( Tekeze). The second issue, Ahmaras were not aware about narcissist Abiy Ahmed's goal. When he first came to power, he promised to bring democracy and we supported him. But as time goes on his true colors started to apear. He is an evil heartless killer. As soon as he came to the throne, Oromo extremists started the genocide. We protested for 3 years but he covered it up all. News coverage is not allowed about the killing. We only see the mass grave by the killers. We witnessed baby's head chopped off. That how the war started in Amhara. Now drones buzzing day and high all over Amhara. Schools, churches, etch are being destroyed by Turkish, Chinese, and Iranian drone. Internet has been cut off since the war. No news coverage is allowed. We are in the stone age.
We can definitely blame the TPLF for this. For the past 28 years, they’ve divided Ethiopia along ethnic lines, and now the country is dangerously fractured. Instead of unity, there’s an overwhelming focus on ethnicity, which is tearing Ethiopia apart. On top of that, they are pushing for conflicts with Somalia, Eritrea, and other African nations, which could further destabilize the region and destroy Ethiopia from within. Millions of people have already died, especially during the TPLF war-2 million lost their lives-and even now, Amhara and Oromo people are dying every day. With ethnic tensions rising, this could turn into another tragedy like Rwanda. The path they are on is incredibly dangerous. Thank you for shedding light on this issue, and I really appreciate your program.

Hey James, on Ethiopia's demographics and politics. Over 30 million Amhara people reside in traditionally Oromo areas, with around 20 million Amhara integrating into Oromo communities. However, these numbers are disputed. Despite ethnic tensions, Ethiopia's stability isn't solely dependent on Amhara-Oromo dynamics. I believe Ethiopia needs a new leader who prioritizes equality and unity among all ethnic groups. Abiy Ahmed's leadership has been divisive, and his pursuit of power has raised concerns. I think Ethiopia deserves a leader who promotes inclusivity and addresses the needs of all citizens. Abiy Ahmed's divisive leadership won't last. Time for a change!

The LORD God is always responsible for the unity of Ethiopia. Most of the religious Ethiopan people do have very strong trust in the LORD God about its unity.
No matter what you say Ethiopia will survive and become the world leader in the near future. Ethiopia lezelalem Timur. Ethiopia is a promis land❤ therefore, nothing will break Ethiopia.
Dear James Honestly that is utterly biased report. If you are not embedded Journalist you should to investigate & research properly before making this video which can lead the viewer to believe a false narratives about the Amhara & regimes . For first and foremost the Derg regime was not Amhara but rather most of them were Oromos . Second as you mentioned Ethiopia has long history & there is no region called western Tigray for thousands of years before TPLF came to power. But rather it is a part of Amhara in Gonder. Third The majority Ethnic people was deceived by TPLF & OlF to marginalize Amhara’s. Fourth there are no insurgents but rather Fanos who fight for their existential threats.
Hi James, thank you for another interesting and brief material. As always, big praise for you work. Minor feedback: - You have an engaging, almost tense way of giving the narration. The “like and subscribe” in the middle really killed it for me. Maybe keep at the end as in the past, that has its almost relaxing/reliving vibe after the important talk. (long term subscriber here) - not sure if the sound of the opening statement was intentional, “ (..) Ethopia facing a civil war that could FINALLY destroy the country”, like you wished it happened. Best wishes and always look forward to your geopolitical updates.
This is frustrating. Hopefully this can be resolved, so that we can use a good outcome as a successful model for other multiethnic states where divisive nationalism hasn’t quite taken as strong of a hold.
Yup that's why 60% of true Ethiopians living in and of the country support the Fanos. They will abolish this joke of administration that is based on so called 'ethnicity'😂 between black brothers
We wish victory for FANO! Fano are freedom fighters. They are not just fighting to free Amhara; they are fighting for all Ethiopians. We hope Fano will unite the country. East Africa needs unity. The Derg was Oromo, TPLF is Tigrayan, and the Prosperity Party is Oromo, but they play the victim for the rest of the world. There is a clear pattern of cleansing Amhara from Ethiopia. The genocide is clearly happening, and no one should deny it.
Say FANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT Insurgents Again Fanoooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because of you BUNCH of layers war of mongers but by Almightily of GOD ETHIOPIA it will survive .
In fact there is a power struggle between the Oromos and Amharas as the Amharas are currently complaining of being discriminated systematically from Economic, Social and Technological affairs
Yes, there is a looming risk of Ethnic clashes which can only be triggered by elites from politicians, activists and scholars. The people have intermaried, lived together for centuries with little quarrel.
As a Tigrayan/Tegaru I think that every ethnic group in Ethiopia has had their moment of persecution so its only fair the Amhara get what they gave. No sympathy and I'm with Abiy on this one.

Thank you for sharing the current situation of Ethiopia.

Some of your comments needs more investigation. Because Amhara is the largest ethnic group not the second. You should get more information from the Amhara's.

The same thing was being said about TPLF and Tigray, the former unofficial governing body of Ethiopia, and they got nearly defeated, and that Ethiopia was going to be a new Yugoslavia.
Now, the same thing is being said for Amhara.
Amharas don't want independence at all. Amharas where the first building block of Ethiopia, their whole identity revolves around Ethiopia. Many of them want to get justice legitimately, and rule Ethiopia illegitimately, but never to divide Ethiopia
Thanks. You'll see I agree with much of what you said. But having looked at other conflicts, I also know there can come a tipping point where even the most resilient state breaks apart. The fact that the Amhara have been so central to Ethiopia is a vital factor.
@@JamesKerLindsay Yes indeed, and my claim was that amharas are even more integral part of Ethiopia, so they'll actually try to preserve the unity of the country over their rebellion if it takes. If it's for the unity of Ethiopia, you don't fear for amharas, but if it's for justice, then of course, you should fear everybody, even ones own ethnic political parties

I think, You missed one big point: No Ethnic group in Ethiopia is seeking succession, all wants Ethiopia for their own viable survival.
So Ethiopia will always exist as it did for 1000s years. It keeps rearranging itself. May be a better, more intelligent question would have been: When will Ethiopia achieve lasting peace?

I have seen different places around the world, but never felt such comfortable weather, culture, resources and social cohesion. I wish that politicians and people work together to create better place for creating robust ecosystem for the country.

There has never been Amhara region before 1993!
There was no "kilil" before 1993. The western/Egypt puppet meles zenawi brought it to Ethiopia.
@@yanicyoda4762Tell me about it, man. I did some research the other day and found out Wokait-Tsegede had been predominated by a Tigrinya speaking majority for some 300 years and claimed by the Kingdom of Tigray a large fraction of those years, while the Amhara claimed it for brief periods, while the remaining time was disputed. Thought it was all fake until I saw the 98 historical maps that proved it.
What's crazier is how some Eritrean politician in 1947 even spoke of uniting Eritrea with the Tigrinya speaking majority of Wolkait-Tsegede. Wild....
And then some book in the late 70s highlighted major ethnic groups in Ethiopia, showing northern Begemeder as majority Tigrinya speaking. Crazy...
I guess Fano were repeating lies the whole time. Who knew?
Indeed, there is no western tigray, it is a propaganda of samtha power who made so much noise about thug-ray, in hopes of snatching land that was taken by bandit tplf from Amhara and Afar in 1993.
Ethiopia is an old empire that needs to be restructured into a democratic system which will give all ethnic groups an equal opportunity. One things is clear the current system where the ethnic group who controls Adis Ababa is acting the owner is unsustainable. It didn’t work for the Amhara and Tigaru and it will not work for the Oromo today. The third option is to dismantle the whole country into smaller states which live side by side peacefully.
Exactly....
But there will be a lot of border wars ......

Splitting up the country wont work, Ethiopia is on its way to world power and Eritrea (who LEFT) will give anything to go back in. NOBODY wants to stay in Eritrea. the people of Amhara and Tiguru knows this...
You will see the leaving exit out of the region just like we see now with Eritrea. You cannot drive down any street in Addis and not see 10 to 12 high rise cranes of buildings going up = That is the future people want to be part of. if you interview some of the people in the city : they are coming from places who are not WINNING the future.
for those regions to split independently: they have to show the people on the ground they wont be another Eritrea. (no shade to Eritrea) = but it looks the same since 1990
@@TH-qk6ezthroughout history we can find some countries that failed due to civil wars but they come back and continue as country but when old empire collapses, it never comes back and examples are many Soviet Union, Ottoman empire, Romons. Ethiopia is an old empire and the people who live there hate each other that’s why since Menelik Ethiopians are fighting against each other.
@@mayo3607 ..Sure I am not denying the fact that there is a potential risk of the entire region disintegrating, but all I am saying is anything all these small proxy states bordering Etjiopia wish on Ethiopia is counter productive...for example Eritrea is just Mini Ethiopia with almost the same ethnic makeup and the highland Tigrigna speakers dominating the rest...and by your own definition of "empire" Eritrea or even little Djibouti is an empire hence you have to be careful what you wish for....the same energy you project on dismantling Ethiopia can be projected outwards and I presume that is what happened to Somalia and Sudan who have for decades been used as proxy ground against Ethiopia...true they managed to landlock Ethiopia but they died as a result...Again, my theory would only make sense if you are a genuinely concerned Eritrean or Somalian or Djiboutian...or possibly you could be a happy Egyptian whose interest lies on complete disintegration of the region....

Minor feedback:
- You have an engaging, almost tense way of giving the narration. The “like and subscribe” in the middle really killed it for me. Maybe keep at the end as in the past, that has its almost relaxing/reliving vibe after the important talk. (long term subscriber here)
- not sure if the sound of the opening statement was intentional, “ (..) Ethopia facing a civil war that could FINALLY destroy the country”, like you wished it happened.
Best wishes and always look forward to your geopolitical updates.
Thankyou Professor!!
You correctly expressed the historical background and current situation of the country. We will pray for peace in Ethiopia.
The Derge is from the top and most of them were Oromos. Please check.
80 % of Derg war prisoners in Eritrea from 1961 _ 1991 were from the oromo Region. There is still a registered document in Eritrea.
