Horseback Riding Douglas Mesa, near Monument Valley

- Located about 25 miles from Monument Valley on the Navajo Reservation, Douglas Mesa is a great place to ride highlighted by a spectacular canyon that a smaller version of the Grand Canyon, that was carved out by the San Juan River. There are a myriad of canyon crisscrossing the mesa which is home to a great many wild horses.

Awesome!! Magical to ride in the same country as our ancestors. I always feel such a deep rooted connection when riding in the hills of the PNW. I can only imagine how they felt when they first laid eyes on the majesty that is this fine country.

Thanks for the nice ride, I enjoyed it immensely, apart from the woman on the palomino who got most of the video time, horse was struggling to carry her, sitting heavy, she felt she had to keep flicking it along. Poor thing didn't come alive until it got sight of the camp. I'd rather like a mule in that country, they were real steady.

I like to think that I know my horses. And standing close to the edge of a canyon like that scares the living daylights out of me! One spook away from death...

That's generally not a place open to the public. you guys must be family friends or somethin? I moved away, but I rode all over that part of the reservation and you guys are seeing trails I never even knew existed

@@metatron2332 I don't believe there is a place to rent horses at Douglas Mesa. Better to go to Monument Valley, which is not far away to do something like that. All the horses you see in this video are privately owned and hauled into this area for a weeks-worth of riding.

How long was the ride? I´m really interested in doing this. We are comming from Germany. Me and my wife we will visit this area next weeks and searching for a 4-6 hours ride.

Douglas Mesa is located in Southeast Utah, a short distance from Monument Valley. It's off of Hwy. 163 on Douglas Mesa Road. From there, you drive for a bit on a paved road, then it turns to dirt where you drive numerous miles to get there, passing a lot of wild horses. This is Navajo land, meaning you will need a Navajo guide to take you in. You should be able to find one on the Internet.

No, they did not, fortunately. It was a bit scary when it happened, but you can see them shortly after riding along, seemingly no worse for wear.

Looks like the rider controlled his fall pretty well but the video cuts before you can tell about the horse
That fella at 18:34 was seated wrong for climbing that ledge. He should have been up in his stirrups and his weight forward over his pony's neck. Not sitting back like a sack of taters. Young horse didn't know how to handle that. Good way to get you and your horse hurt. Lucky it didn't.
I noticed that as well, poor thing... he was completed laid back 😣 I wish they would give clear instructions on how to behave on the horse during climb up/down... it sometimes feels like these « tours » are pure business and that the horses well-being isn’t counting at all.
@@KidCongoPowersFFS Thank you for subscribing. This group isn't a commercial interest. It's private owners out riding as a horse club. I would be willing to bet most of them own their own horse for the first time while some of them are experienced owners and riders. Horses aren't a possession, they're a lifestyle.
Funny thing is that was my horse😂bc I think my uncle was riding I wasn’t able to ride then but wish I could but the horses and the guy was fine

Thank you for your comments. I made these videos for people to enjoy. Yes, all the riders are experience riders, riding their own horses. A gentleman named Don Vinson puts on these rides twice a year, along with Monument Valley rides, normally in back to back weeks. Janice, neither horse or rider were hurt. They continued on as you can see in clips taken just afterward.

Jerry Smith ..the rider was not prepared for the hop up, got unbalanced and dumped, and in that mess the horse stepped back and toppled off the jump-up he'd just negotiated. Shit happens.
Both horse and rider were ok. He was the Navajo trail boss. Very experienced rider.

Why oh Why do so many documenters RUIN their videos with annoying music overdubbing. Is their a prejudice by American audiences against natural sounds like hoof falls on dirt and rocky trails, running water, wind through the canyons and trees, creaking saddles, horses snorting etc etc. I either turn off or if the scenery is beautiful enough watch in total silence once ONLY as it is much too frustrating to return for multiple views with the inappropriate accompanying music.
To answer your question, the weather for that ride was not particularly good, with heavy winds just about everyday, meaning it was impossible to get any sound that was worth a damn. That said, I personally find the sounds of the trail to be deathly dull. For me, music is far preferable. I receive far more compliments on music, including the music in this video, that the opposite. Again, to each his own.
And besides, horses can be flatulent and that could be embarrassing to some.
