Another great video. As regards your near miss - afraid to say that you were both in the wrong. Initially you were the keep clear boat, being to windward and on the same tack as the Hunter 707. However, the Hunter 707 was the stand on boat and also had an obligation to avoid a collision - so probably should not have tacked across you like that. The right course of action would have been for you to bear off behind them, as you finally did. That said, these boys are used to very close racing and so missing you like that is all part of a hard days racing! It was Scottish Series, which is held in Tarbert every year around the end of May - so that patch of water will always be busy then. If you had hit them with your Nic you would have ended their weeks racing for sure, and probably ended up with a hefty insurance claim on you - so worth brushing up on the colregs.
Cheers guys, was certainly a close one. We are still learning and are lucky to have avoided the collision. It was hard to navigate through the racers zig zagging down the loch.
@@OutsideYourZone looking carefully at the video at 13:40 you'll see a 16 foot powerboat following the Etchelles fleet up their race course. That was me, as I was a photographer for the event. I was obviously paying too much attention to the racing as I normally wouldn't miss a Nicholson sailing up Loch Fyne :)
Outstanding stuff lads. Quick tip, its often worth sheeting the main in a bit when jibing so it doesn't have to go as far and delete someone with the boom. Looking forward to the next one 👍
Love your enthusiasm…love your channel. Great to bring sailing to younger people. One thought (not a criticism) is when you goose wing then centre your mizzen sail so that the jib gets full force of the wind. Your mizzen was making your jib flog a bit and you want to maximise your sail area.
Looks like You and Your friends already had a lot of fun with Your blind date sailboat. 😀 From what I've read the Nics are great reliable sailboats and Your videos show that she apparently sails great and seems to slide gently through the waves. With all sails up she looks really majestic! Have fun!
You were in the wrong with that near miss. Both boats were on the same tack (port) and under those circumstances the windward boat should give way. You were the windward boat so you should have got out of the way. This is a decent simple explanation of the basics.
Only when it's irrelevant. It only counts when you're on the same tack, and because you were the port hand boat, with the wind from your port side, you were the windward boat. Once they tacked, it's the different tack that matters , and you were on port, therefore stayed the keep-clear boat.
Perhaps you might explain how you draw this conclusion? From here I see the other boat to starboard, and on a port tack, meaning you are to windward of them under the rules. For the purposes of the rules, windward/leeward is determined based on which side of the boat the wind is coming from. Just because you're both headed upwind, and the other boat is ahead of you, doesn't make them the windward boat.
That looks absolutely idyllic, Team. What an adventure… already! I know nothing about boats, but it looks like yon Blue Spurr could do with a bit of maintenance: a lick of paint, and some varnishing. Winter in dry dock?
We will be releasing a channel when we set off round the world called the Galley. On there, Rob will be going into more details behind the preparation and method of those amazing meals
Keep going boys lovin the content and the ole boat. You have Blu Spur I had Czarina Blue, excited to watch you dreams unfold. Well done for missing that flippin race boat!,,,,,😮
Always the best! Cheers lads! Come to the US when you can. I’ll have the boddingtons chilled and waiting. I think Mardi Gras would love you guys. You could come for New Orleans excitement and follow on by isolated fishing in Grand Isle . My family could house you if you make it over.
Mate that sounds like such an adventure! Hopefully we will be able to get ourselves over. Would be amazing to meet you and soak in the New Orleans culture🧡
Unreal mate, we will definitely take you up on that soon. New Orleans sounds amazing and thanks for the offer. Make sure to keep in touch and big love from the OYZ crew ❤️
Well, that tack of them was outside _your_ zone-as you like it 😉 For them, it was probably a lot more inside their zone because they are used to close maneuvers like this in races and their J70 has a fin keel and is very light, thus moves on a dime and reacts to the slightest trim. Beside that the trip went pretty fine, aye? I like your love and kindness of nature. Keep it on lads!
You are right, sketchy stuff. If you watch closely you will see the boat ahead of them tacked forcing them to tack in front of us, certainly a learning curve. Next time we will be more prepared! Spot on 👌
Keep going boys! Loving the vids. Read up on preventers when running, maybe shorten main sheet when jibing and save the gooseneck. When I bought my Nic 38 the gooseneck was already broken, no gooseneck = no adventure. Fishing, try feathers above a deep diving plug, especially if you are under 4 knots, over that is a bit fast for a boat load.
Good to see you guys enjoying life afloat. Chap was very lucky with that gybe. Best to haul the mainsheet all the way in when it’s getting a bit windy and then let it out once gybe. Gloves are not a bad idea if mainsheet not on a winch. Andy UK
Thanks mate, means the world. We’ve all got full time jobs behind the scenes! But we hope that in between those responsibilities we manage to bring you great footage of adventures. If you want to support the boys and help us prepare for quitting our jobs and setting off round the world, as well as getting great exclusive content, you can support us on the patreon for only £2!! 🧡
For collision regs, both you and other vessel were on a port tack and you were the leeward vessel so you were the stand on I believe. However, you should prob have given them a bit more clearance by slowing down or bearing away and made your intentions clearer by making the turn to starboard earlier and with greater emphasis. I didn’t see any other racers behind that group so looked clear. Clean pants after that one 😉
Thanks mate, we really appreciate your knowledge and analysis. What a close one! We will be sure to make much more space between us and any racers in the future. Love , OYZ 🧡
In no world were they the leeward vessel. They were approaching the race boat to the port, where the crew were hiking, thus from the WINDWARD side. They were also somewhat ahead of the boat, aka WINDWARD. These knobs, apart from needing to stay the F out of the race course, needed to not (after a dude says "we're on a collision course") loll around and do nothing, looking like smug idiots. Then, to make matters worse, after the race boat indicates they'd tack to avoid a collision, the fool tacks as well in the opposite direction (friend saying "what are you doing?") instead of just heading up to give him room. Nothing wrong with making a mistake and learning a lesson, but too many people not calling them out for the mistakes made (#1 putting themselves in that situation in the first place), making thing they did nothing wrong. Even without not giving way when it was theirs to give, would you stand in the middle of a running path with your buds while a marathon was passing through. Maybe these guys would.
I would be so pissed if I knew a boat full of inexperienced sailors almost ran into my race boat. That captain made the mistake of assuming you knew what you were doing. Next time you see a race regatta give them a lot of space man.
Boats all need space and water. Although I personally avoid any contact with races, not every person is aware of the particular race culture and it’s agressive sailing tactics ( its a race!) everyone needs to have a care… as my father always said “dead right” is still dead.

Always give way to a boat on starboard tack - particularly if they are racing!
The other one should have maintained course and speed.
But yeah, keeping clear of racing boats would be polite ;)
Both boats were on a port tack, in that situation windward boat gives way. It was the Blue Spur, the windward boat, that should have given way.
👌

Thank you 🙏
Wrap a bit of foam or pool noodle around the feet of ya drone, might stop it sinking if it goes in again
