BMW E9X engine and trans mounts, Will it pass the Water Test?

  • This BMW E92 has some serious vibrations caused by collapsed engine mounts. In this video I show you how I replace the engine and transmission mounts. What's not mentioned in this video is how much better the car feels driving too. The shifts feel more solid and the car feels like it has more power now that it's not lost in drivetrain movement.

    Replacing motor mounts is one of the most satisfying jobs in terms of the difference it makes in how the engine feels, comparable to when you replace blown struts/shocks.

    Good job making what might be an intimidating project to some feel more manageable. Engine and tranny mounts are never as “simple” as they seem like they should be. Your customers are lucky to have you servicing their rides.

    Thanks for sharing. It is always nice to learn the little tricks that make the job easier, less time consuming and not having to go out and buy special tools. Other vids, show this job by dropping the subframe. Though that does not look complicated, it is more time consuming and more intimidating. That is also not a procedure you want something to go wrong.

    Just had an oil change with my 540i. The mechanic said that my engine mounts have collapsed so this video explained exactly what I need to check and I think I'm gonna have him put new motor mounts as well as new transmission mounts. I couldn't believe the difference in the collapsed mount and the new mount.

    I did both “motor” mounts today on my 2007 E92 N54. Drivers mount was exactly as you described. Passenger side AKA the mount from Hades was another story. The dual turbo exhaust pipes were in the way to the point where it was just easier to drop the subframe about 2”. Passenger mount was not actually that bad once the subframe was dropped. Sounds intimidating but it really not. The only thing I suggest is having a Quick Jack or better lift so you can get under the car easily. Good video.

    Not cheap though, here in Australia it cost $900 for parts and labour.

    FYI:
    For anyone doing this on a 335i or n54, you will not have enough clearance between the downpipes and the subframe without removing the v brace and subframe bolts, allowing the subframe to be suspended by the control arms. And you would probably want an engine support far for that..

    Just a heads up - the torque for the mounting bolts (2 for each side, from below) is only 28Nm, the single nut on top is 56Nm. From the TIS bmw software.

    • @ericmg7563
      @ericmg7563 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      how to remove the nut on top?

    • @GrooveDigger808
      @GrooveDigger808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericmg7563 Tricky to get to for sure.. I have a UK, right hand drive, model so to get to the right hand one involved removing the small heat shield around the steering knuckle (two 10mm nuts) which just gave enough access from above with a long extension. The left side was relatively easy to reach straight down from above with extensions.

    I like this video, I just wish you would’ve talked more about diagnostics, like how’d you know it was the motor mounts causing the vibrations, and how come you replaced the tranny ones too? Just curious. I did really like the water in the car, I feel like there you could tell more of the difference and that’s what the customer cares about and will notice.

    • @JamiesGarage1
      @JamiesGarage1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Looking at the mounts from under the car was clear they were worn. The chances of trans mounts being worn are almost 100% with worn engine mounts so we automatically replace them. Thanks for the tips, it will help me with future videos 👍🏻

    Using the engine holder to avoid bending the thin aluminum oil pan which easily misaligns the power steering pump bracket bolted to the oil pan is critical. Getting give Serpentine Belt issues from inside the oil pan crack/bends from this vs doing it right and dropping subframe a couple inches.

    • @markm0000

      When the transmission is in drive it engages the torque converter and the engine sends power. That causes the engine to lean harder onto the collapsed passenger mount and transfer vibrations. With the transmission in park it the engine is just free spinning and raised up off the frame by the intact driver side mount.
