Summer McIntosh ends Katie Ledecky's 13-year win streak in 800m free. [FULL VIDEO]

- 17-year-old Summer McIntosh set a new Canadian record in the women's 800m distance at a meet in Orlando, Fla., swimming to a time of 8:11.39, which beat Katie Ledecky's time of 8:17.12 by nearly six seconds. It's the first time in more than 13 years that Ledecky has lost an 800m final
At the age of 17, Summer McIntosh has elite world-class ability across multiple strokes and distances. A singular talent - it will be so much fun to watch her take the sport to the next level! As for Katie Ledecky - all good things must come to an end, right? Her 13-year unbeaten streak in this event has set a standard for other athletes to strive to achieve...and she last lost a 1500m when she was 13 years old, back in 2010. Not too shabby...
It's very exciting to watch Summer's ascension in the sport. The more competitive this sport is, the better.
Yeah... 'Legend' doesn't really do her justice, does it! Now we're seeing another legend take her place...
The end is near, but it’s not here,
Ledecky is still young, the rise of a proper competitor will motivate her to do her best again. Unlike some who were at the top for so long but got the wake up call too late, Ledecky still has time on her hands.
I’m so excited to see Summer at the Olympics in Paris. She has such talent and drive for such a young woman! We’re so proud she’s Canadian.
Instead of debating whether Ledecky's form is better or worse, I think it comes down to the fact that we are seeing a generational talent starting to leave her mark on the sport. Because of the tight scheduling at the Olympics, it is not entirely certain if Summer will race the 800 meter freestyle at the Paris Olympics. She also has the 200 IM final on the same day as the 800 freestyle final. It is entirely possible that she does not race the 800 freestyle in order to concentrate on the 200 IM where she is gold medal favorite. The other thing to keep in mind is that this not a fully tapered Ledecky either. At some point in this race you just scale back and conserve energy when it becomes obvious that you are not going to win the race.
Yup, both are in the middle of hard, massive yardage training. Both have skipped Doha to keep training. But still.
Love Summer and her versatility But I wouldn't bet against Kate Douglass in the 200 IM in Paris

agree, but to me the most amazing part isn't that she beat ledecky when both were in mid season form. It is that she beat her own personal best time by 9 seconds in mid season form. IF she swims it in Paris she might have a shot at beating a record I thought could last another 20 years.
But keep in mind just last year at nationals ledecky went an 8:07...so it isn't like she won't be right there contending to better her own record.

I know right. She is no longer content with following her and out sprinter her. She just took it to her and you know that was the plan because she positioned herself on the far side of her lane to deny Ledecky any drafting opportunity.

I agree that Katie’s form is “off” this year, I wonder if they have tried to modify her stroke since moving to the Gators team? She used to look so smooth and effortless, now it looks like she has shortened her stroke and is swinging her arms around causing slow down in forward motion .
What about your form are you a coach ? Just curious
Actually 50+ years in swimming including coaching, not at Olympic level, but enough to see differences in individual swimmers’ strokes. Just my observations, I’m a big Katie Ledecky fan and have watched her for years. @@RichardBroussard-z3y
I also thought this. Watching this race it looks like she is going hard from the start. Not sure if this is the right move, I always thought that a long strong stroke is better for her and these lengths in general

the crazy thing about summer is she will not even race the 800 meters at paris she races another events the same day , thats very lucky for ledecky
Wow! How has McIntosh swum the 800m??? And I can’t believe she beat Ledecky, a living legend!
Wow! This was a beat down. She didn't just stayed with Ledecky and out sprinted her. She just forced her into a role she's not used to: being the chaser. And she slowly increased that lead with each lap and the bottom fell off for Ledecky at the 650m mark. This will be interesting in Paris. I think both can go faster and possibly challenge the world record this summer.
I still don't think Summer should compete the 800m free in Paris. But if so, and get the gold she will make history
@@drynshock1 why shouldn’t she? That 8:11 is faster than Ledecky went in Tokyo to win the gold and she was in a tight race with Titmus. So, clearly McIntosh would be a contender for gold. At this point, I’d say she’s the favorite.

Summer has a phenomenal stroke. I knew if anyone could take down ledecky itd be her. I also knew she was capable of more than just the 200/400 freestyle.

@BISH9484 in the 800 free she is. That said, Summer has won multiple 400 free vs Ledecki in past few months, although her world record set last summer was passed by Arianna Titmus not long after.
Well yea. WR in 400IM. World champion in 200 butterfly and 400 IM. WJR in ALL her events. Safe to say she is a generational best all around swimmer. What's scary is that she continues to improve ..Paris could be a coronation.

This event apparently not ratified by World Aquatics, unfortunately. Summer's time would be 18th in the all time rankings, but it doesn't show.

What an interesting race....
Perhaps as one generational talent is nearing the end of an incredible career, another is just beginning.
It's pretty certain Summer will not competing in the 800m in Paris due to schedule control, but in the future I can see her taking on the 800m more and more.
The problem is, and what a problem it would be to have, Summer is SO good at so many events.... it's difficult to pick and choose.
Her 400 IM and 200m Butterfly are her bread and butter events, but she's certainly capable of winning in other events as well....
On another note, I'm assuming this will be Ledecky's last Olympics?? Which will be bitter sweet....
The GOAT. What a career. It's just too bad Father time wins out in the end, would've been amazing to watch these two compete for years and years to come.

Just to show it’s possible. Katie had a lot left in the tank, finishing in a 29.2. It’s funny this stroke is what she looked like in the prelims of the 400 at the US Open and I thought her stroke was just kaputt. But in the finals she lengthened. I think it’s happening when her triceps are fatigued and my guess is the great work they did with her when she first went to Florida to fix her stroke aberrations she began doing at Stanford was not being done anymore. She’s around guys who are bulling themselves through the water. She’s doing less than full range of stroke motions in the weight room, etc.
But, she has so much muscle memory of doing her stroke correctly when push really comes to shove, when she's rested, it comes back.
Summer is obviously no stranger to hard work and has speed and endurance and four strokes. Along with Kate Douglass, she might be the most dangerous single swimmer on the planet, more dangerous since she isn’t swimming in college where weights are as generally as important as a great stroke. Her coach is smart and driven to improve and being the most improved on her team is a race every day. It shows. Ledecky has been "schooling" is for a long time. No one fast enough to make the Olympic 4x100 relay should be dominant in the mile and or vice versa. Swimming has a long way to go. My goal is to do as much as possible to get us there. What about the fact they lapped all the other swimmers, most by more than 50m?
Ledecky's form looked much worse than 2022 or 2023. She was high shouldered and basically lunging while slapping at the water. But to her credit she tried to fight back until she realized it was hopeless, essentially conceding with 150 remaining. McIntosh would beat Ledecky again in Paris. Ten year age difference and more raw athletic ability.
Just give her time. She is 17 years old and still developing her massive talent. @GeorgeGeorge-by2lf

Ledecky's time would not get her even bronze if she swam in Rio 2016. She really seemed in awful shape.

I haven't read all of the comments and not gonna but Just a reminder: 7 months ago Katie Ledecky wins Women's 800M Freestyle at the 2023 Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis. 8:07.07. So for those who think this is the beginning of the end, think again
It is the end, Summer is too good and is only gonna get better and Katie is past her prime and declining. Thats just life bud, everything comes to an end, the only way Ledecky wins the 800 is if Summer opts not to swim it.
Oh dear this is what people did with Summer before Worlds last year, they hyped her up & she ended up finishing 3rd...oh wait she didn't even medal at all...I thought the British were bad at being so arrogant about a single swimming star that they've unearthed, but the Canadians are even worse.

Congrats to McIntosh, but what am I missing here? People are acting like the Queen died and Prince Charles was crowned King. Sheesh. Was this the Olympic final or the World Championship final? Katie's 26 and the Olympics are 6 months away. At 26, nearly 27, do you really think she should swim every race at 8:06 pace in minor events just to prove she can? Snort. Sooner or later, at nearly 27, she's going to have to conserve energy for the big races at trials and the Olympics and not treat every race like it's life or death. Even Michael Phelps figured that out before he called it a day. She can swim 8:17 in her sleep. McIntosh swam 8:11+ Katie won Worlds at 8:08+. I think she'll be ready for the Olympics. If there's one thing she knows how to do - it's win the big races.

and summer just won 3 golds and 1 silver at the paris olympics. summer did not swim in the paris olympics 800 m free because it was too close to the 200 im final which summer won. a better spacing for the 800 m free, summer probably would have swam that as well and won.

She is 17 years old. Still developing as a swimmer and figuring things out. Holds the world record for 400IM. She is an amazing athlete.

@@jambo8157 I think you just contradict yourself by stating that Smith is the 4th fastest. Even with that time, Summer's time was still the fastest. Not only fastest here, but also fastest in the 400 free. While she dominated in the other 2, she couldn't even make the podium in the 400free with the competition she came up against.

Never stopped Michael Phelps. At one point, he retired from swimming. He came out of retirement a few years later and was still able to pick up Olympic gold medals.
