Looks like I’ll be doing this myself because Toyota quoted me $1,200 JUST TO INSTALL IT not including the $500 just for the part. Thank you so much for this walkthrough.
My buddy and I did this last Friday night, using this video as a guide. Left the exhaust on, Left the vehicle on the floor. Two of us threaded the hitch between the mount and the muffler. Also bought the factory wiring. Very good kit, worth the money. Thank you for the help.
Thank you very much!! On my 2019 Highlander, I did not need to make any cut on the driver's side corner under-side plastic panel. Try it! If you have tin snips, it was super easy to cut vs. a Dremel or saw of some kind ...just like scissors. Also, I was able to get the hitch in place to thread the screws by myself without help. Just let the passenger side of the hitch sit on the muffler while raising the other side to thread the first bolt, then immediately thread one on the muffler side to take the pressure off ASAP. GREAT VIDEO!!
Very clean and well executed! I was thinking of going aftermarket but those options dont look nearly as clean. Ill be ordering this kit for my 2019. Thanks!
Ha ha have fun. Thay are heavy, if you leave the muffler up it can kinda hang on the top side of the muffler. I think a floor jack is your best option.
I have several questions regarding 2018-2019 Highlanders... Will any of these Highlanders that have a V6? Have the towing package included? I realize they all may not have a hitch already installed, but will they have the other items like transmission cooler that is a part of the tow package? Generally speaking, how reliable will these years Highlanders be? We are looking at some within these year ranges, probably between 50-100k miles.
They are great vehicles, and there are not many issues with them. If you are doing weekend camp outs, it will work great. It's not the best for a heavy-duty tow rig.
All v6 2017-2019 have the tow package equipment (alternator, trans cooler, etc). However you'll need to buy the wiring harness and hitch. 5000lbs seems too much to be towing regularly. But once in a while, it will do fine. 3000 and less even better. 1500lbs, don't even know it's back there.
Thank you for creating this video! Question...two of the bolts are extremely difficult. Its so hard i couldnt tighten it with a impact wrench rated 1100 ft lb on battery. Im assuming this isn't normal. Any suggestions? I was thinking a pipe to leverage a hand wrench.
Dunno why they make it the hang so far out. It would have been nice it it was flush with the bumper. How is this generation, any issues with the v6? They standard with 5k tow or is it 3500 lbs but need coolers etc to get to 5k lbs?
Hi, I am just wondering on this specific vehicle that you installed this on. Did this vehicle have a transmission oil cooler already installed? Seems like those would be necessary components to utilize full tow capacity?
Some came with transmission coolers installed, and some used the lower part of the radiator as a cooler. I don't remember if this one had a cooler installed. I do recommend a separate style cooler if you plan on doing a lot of towing.
I want to install mud guards on my 2022 Highlander and can’t find a video on it. Should be easy enough to install but I was hoping to watch somebody first.
I don't have a video of that yet. They are really easy to do. Just set out the hardware and split it evenly between right and left. Usually, there will be a bag of hardware with a front mud flap that will be for both front flaps and one bag with a rear flap, and that will be for both rear mud flaps. If the kit comes with the clip style nuts, look for small dimples in the bumper, and they will slide over the dimple. If not, you can hold the flap up to figure out where the clip nuts go. Next time I do a set, I will make a video. Thanks for the idea.
Come on Toyota! Why do I need to cut something to install a hitch receiver? I hate those shitty work. Is it so hard to add into design the possible installation of the hitch reciver?
You could buy a Chevy that has the hidden hitch cover, but then it would be in the shop all the time for problems. I would rather own a Toyota and have to trim a little plastic that you will never see.
@@shoptimewithdrew It's not about what to buy; I just can't understand why not to put it into design? It obviously has mounting holes for bolts, but still, you need to modify and make some ugly cutouts.
I do not trust our local tecs. Guy at the service department told me they do not make a hitch for my 2024 Grand Highlander…. That’s when I found you on line. So where’s your dealership located? I would like to schedule an appointment. I ordered the hitch 15 minutes ago.

I'm glad you guys got it done with no issues. The factory harness is super easy to install.
Where does it plug in to get power? Also, what did you pay for the kit if I may ask.
That factory kit plugs in right in the back under some of the trim panels.

Thank you. I'm glad it went off without a hitch.
This video was really helpfull, specially for the plastic cuts, really accurate.
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful.

Yes, the factory kit looks way better. I'm glad you liked it.
Thank you so much for this!
Thank you!
Very timely. I’m installing mine today. Thanks!
Hope that it goes smooth for you!
@@shoptimewithdrew thanks! My son bailed so I’ll be using my jack and vice grips to replace him.

Got it. Would have been a pain without the video, thanks. Easy peasy.
So glad it was helpful thank you for all the input.
Thanks, will be doing mine in the next couple days. I was shocked how heavy the box was, vs other hitches.
Ya, the highlander hitch is probably the heaviest hitch for Toyota's. Hope the installation goes smooth for you.
Where can I buy the hitch? And does it come with the plug for the trailer so the lights can work on the trailer as well? Thanks in advance
You can buy the hitch on Amazon or from a Toyota dealer. The harness is separate.

Xle, xse, limited, and platinum models are raited for towing 5,000 lbs. I may be wrong, but I think all these models have a transmission cooler.

That is not normal they should thread in pretty easy.
Those hidden clips will get you every time haha!
Ya they can cause some issues.
Is it much different for a 2013 toyota highlander?
Mounting is about the same, but the final look is a little different.
One question. Do those bolts need to be torqued to a certain amount or just really tight?
Never mind, I found the instruction sheet. Looks like 59 lb ft for everything.
59lbs sounds right
Will this application work on a 2015 Highlander XLE
Yes
Great video! Thanks.
Thanks for the view and comment.

Correct, some models do come with a cooler. The only issue I ever see is timing cover oil leaks. They are good rigs.
I had a 2014 version (now totaled and replaced with a 2019) and they are great cars. Super reliable. Great driving too.
Where can I buy this hitch for 2018 highlander xle please? I don’t want to buy direct from Toyota
You can order off Amazon. There is a link in the description.

@@shoptimewithdrew Thank you I appreciate the quick response.

What about the electrical?
I am hoping to film one soon but that customer did not want wiring.
No need to lower exhaust, two of us lifted in place in less than a minute while laying down on ground.
Nice!

@@shoptimewithdrew thanks, I did them yesterday. Very easy. They did come with the clips and the dimples in the bumper were very clear.
I'm glad you got it figured out.
How my highlander comes with hintch already when i bought it.
Tow package installed at factory or the port.
What is the year model?
2016-2019 body style

We're did you order it through? I think you can only get the part from Toyota at this time.
Part number I think is PT974-48241
