    Driver attempts a U-Turn instead of backing out from a low bridge situation. This folks is why you don't depend solely on your GPS! Why on earth would you do this to the truck... USA should not only fire his ass, but send him a bill. He blatantly destroyed that equipment. Simple solution would be to G.O.A.L then back up! or call the police for assistance backing.

      Right. As Non truck driver I slid into a pole once.. No real damage but was stressed. Forgot my car was front wheel drive and thought it was stuck, turned into the pole at first stupid as hell... Stopped to think and was like oh yeah. Pulled away easy no trouble at all turning away from it.
      Glad I remembered my cobalt was front wheel drive in a snow storm going through Kansas in high wind. That was super stressful. Tried pushing through a drift and it pushed me into oncoming traffic, had to floor it and pull the front away.
      That same road I saw the aftermath of a similar slide off. Blue or black car must've slid in front of the semi that hit it.
      Sad to say it looked like the semi crushed any space inside the vehicle. Like a Coke can after you wrap it around a bat. One look and instantly I felt like we were looking at someones new roadside grave.

    This exact type of situation happened to me years ago during my first year on the road. I was in Chicago. The road did have a Low bridge height sign but you couldn't see it until you have already committed to the road. Traffic was so bad that backing up was out of the question. I looked at my GPS and it said there is a road 2 more blocks further down the rabbit hole that I could use to get turned around. When I got there to my horror the freakin road was closed and barricaded. I had no choice but to call the police on myself so they could come out and block traffic long enough for me to turn around. To my supprise, they didn't ask me any questions, they didn't write me a ticket. In fact as soon as I got turned around they drove off without saying a word. I guess this must happen all the time 🤣. But still, after that, I never wanted to go back to Chicago. Those roads are not meant for big trucks.

    Being a driver I can say this. Don't try the u-turn. Back it up nice and slow if you have no traffic or someone willing to help. If you don't have that or are unsure, call the police. They can help you out in a timely manner with no damage to the truck. Plus as long as you haven't violated any weight retrictions, you usually don't get a ticket, you keep your job and you don't have this embarrassing video on youtube.
    I am fortunate that I have not had this exact situation happen to me, but I have come to unmarked dead ends on small county roads with ditches on either side. All I did was throw on my 4 ways, back up slowly and when a car came up behind me I stopped until they went around me. Continued this until I found a safe place to pull into that I could get turned around in safely and legally. No damage to the truck.

    Ive been driving for 4 years. I have had this happen to me once where i got to a low bridge, come to find out the warnings were covered with trees and branches so wasnt aware! Best thing to do is to WAIT IT OUT. When the opportunity comes BACK up until you can safely get out. It doesnt matter how embarrassed or whatever, SHIII happens!! You may even get a good citizen that will get out and aware of whats going on and direct traffic away from you so you call back up! Good luck truckers! Be safe!

    I’ve come to a low overhead clearance once before at around 01:00 very little traffic . I slowly backed out with my 4 ways on , had to go around a couple of curves but I got out safely and on my way . This happened when I was a brand new driver when I went on my own. I hate impatient drivers, always beeping, fingering, shouting & not understanding how that doesn't help the situation at all. When i was new to driving on the roads, people gave me a hard time when i was learning. I took a roundabout in the wrong lane. He beeped at me & gave me the finger. Yes it was my mistake but he was very far from me & i didn't harm anyone doing it. I also went into a blind corner a little to fast around 15mph (this was with parked cars on their side.) I couldn't see any oncoming traffic. Due to the blind bend, i still don't know what i would do differently. Apart from going slower, honestly parking cars on the opposite side of a road around a blind turn shouldn't be allowed. It's very dangerous as i found out i didn't crash but it was a close call. I did progressive braking giving the driver time to go into an open spot.

As i got closer i saw it was a low clearance bridge it was around 2am lucky i was in the city and a chinese restaurant was open so i just hugged the curb got out and got some chinese food and told them to call the cops because a big truck is stuck near the bridge. When they came they stopped traffic both ways and i did a 90 degree alley dock backup down a side street and went back the way I came but with the right direction this time. Back then there was no gps strictly Rand McNally and pay phone calls....The cop said i was one of the few who didn't just try to go under it and get stuck.

    The fact that he drove towards a low bridge which ment he couldn't go any further, and the fact that he wasn't able to get out by doing a U-turn isn't really the issue here, the issue is how he dealt with the situation. I think most people whether rookies or not would've either just left the truck where it was as soon as they discovered it wouldn't go under the bridge and rang for help, or gone onto the pavement a little to get more out of the way and left it there and rang for help, or just backed it out of there, anyone behind him he could've just asked them if they would back up so he can get out. This guy probably panicked and thought that he couldn't leave it there because of blocking the road, or backing up because of traffic behind him, and couldn't think of doing anything else other than just forcing it to do a U-turn even though it ment wrecking the truck.

    Truck driving is not for everybody. This guy lacks common sense. That's very important on this job. What he needed to do, was stop, hit the flashers and get out a assess the situation. Wave traffic though and call the police assistance. As for the trucking company, they'll fire this guy and their insurance will repair the rig.

    I haven't seen anyone mention this, we should give this guy a lot of credit for reading the sign. We've seen on the 12'6 Bridge channel people hit the bridge because they didn't read extremely obvious signs infront of them. I've noticed almost no one reads signs in an 18 wheeler, people are passing when you're supposed to be in a specific lane before a weigh station, in construction it often says "Trucks use left lane," but I find I'm the only truck in the left lane, also in construction I see guys ignore a sign that's marked 20 mph lower than the rest of the construction zone speed limit because there will be a single very tight hard bend or literally a corner that's a 30 degree or more turn that you cannot execute and stay in your lane at a higher speed, but they still go around it 30mph over and shit their pants. In other words this guy was vigilant and attempted to prevent a bad situation rather than blindly entering a bad situation.
    But also side note I have no idea where this road is or if there was a sign that said no trucks he might have missed, but sometimes that's irrelevant because I've been to shippers where their truck entrance was on a truck restricted road. Likely the shipper was within 20 miles for this guy. Back roads can be really great or really awful

    Nobody got out to help this poor fella. None of you know his story on how he got there you don’t know if he’s new or if he’s experienced. Fact is you never know what the next turn could do to you if you find yourself in a difficult situation and make an honest mistake. I found myself lost in the city with extremely high traffic and people were going insane to beeping at me and flying around me because I was at an intersection that had about five different ways you can go it was insane and I ended up choosing the wrong way. I saw there was a little bridge and then I saw there was a turn that I could take but I had to take it super wide. Before I took that turn and looked on my satellite maps to ensure it wasn’t a dead end or something along those matters and it looked good I zoom down to the ground it looked great. Well when I took that left-hand turn and went around this really tight corner because it was like a snake Road… but my GPS didn’t show me was that there would be people double parking along the whole road. So there was no taking any wide turns. I took my phone out and I was ready to call the police when a class B Coca-Cola driver who was behind me got out and told me he could help me and I told him there’s no point I’m never going to make this…. you said brother trust me let’s just try…. 15 minutes later I was able to take that turn because of him. Point is people make mistakes but when there are folks just standing around video recording you instead of helping you do end up like this poor guy here. Stop just sitting in your car recording someone’s less fortunate circumstances and get out and do something and make a positive impact on the world and help somebody.

    He saw the bridge and stopped, and didn't go under it, that was very smart, the next thing is to get out and assess the situation and how you can get out of there without causing accident. After then, the smartest thing is call your company to have police come and help him u-turn or back him up. Don't be a hero trying on your own to fix what you need help with. Call for help.

    As a class 1 driver myself, I can honestly say that I really feel for this fella. At least he's trying to turn back rather than trying to force his way under that bridge, which is probably about a foot lower than his trailer. You can plan your routes all you want, but there are always these curveballs that you have to deal with occasionally. Truck navs are your friends but even they aren't infallible. My truck Tom-Tom has never let me down but there's always that 'what if', which is why common sense is essential. This incident could also be result of a bad planning team.

  • @FrederickG9
    @FrederickG9 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I'm a trucker also and even a blind person could see the sheer stupidity of what this inexperienced driver is doing! Instead of having backed up to the clearly wider and paved section behind him/her to make a safer u-turn, this one actually starts tearing the truck to pieces in an effort to force the vehicle to do what it was never designed to do, which is to fold in on itself! More than 9 out of 10, this driver will be suspended and afterward fired for sheer lack of self control, which is why this numbnut is doing this in the first place.....This makes a bad reflection on all truckers when a clearly flustered driver fails to think things through, take his or her time and PATIENTLY maneuver out of that kind of situation.
    This is an excellent training video of what NOT to do in an unforseen low bridge encounter!

    • @3419joelafave
      @3419joelafave 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      easily said than done.if you inexperience .you have traffic behind you so backing would be difficult.need to post bridge heights sighs sooner or on maps better.my guess he may have used the gps.going under the bridge slowly would've been my way.less damage to truck.most truckers out there are doing trucking because of the bad economy.glad I got out of it when I did.bs job.

    • @SlaughterJa
      @SlaughterJa 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Lafave He couldn't keep going under, the bridge height is 13'0" the truck is 13'6". He would have either ripped the trailer apart(or bridge) if he hit it hard enough, or he would have gotten stuck under the bridge(or both)
