I think its funny how Damian unwittingly gleans some of the subtext while being outraged. Like how SS are actually full of bums, this is a central part of the evolution of their system. They started off as a conservative, and strict rule following bureaucracy following their near defeat at the hands of Yhwach 1000 years ago. That near defeat is what makes Yamamoto turn the Gotei 13 from a band of outlaws into essentially a government. In the SS arc we see how Ichigo disrupts this order, the bureaucratic ineptitude showed best by the Central 46, and Yhwach comments on how Yama has gotten soft compared to how he was 1000 years ago. At some point Rukia even notes how the SS has changed ever since those ryoka entered the Seireitei. This is the effect Ichigo has had and why the SS owes him so much. They are overconfident, they are ill prepared for any attack, because they hide the information of the past. They forbade Kenpachi from learning sword fighting, they wanted to kill Rukia for breaking their "sacred" laws and they kept useful people like Mayuri locked up. And yet even after all this Ichigo still shows up to save them time and time again.
I want to preface this by saying i really like your bleach series and am really glad youre enjoying it! Damian if you want to start being converted to a "Bleach has substance" fan consider watching Mother's Basement's video on the problem with bleach, its very well done! As a hardcore bleach apologist who has watched the full reactions, I don't agree that the world, plot, characters, and themes crumble away if you think about it too hard. I think its low key the opposite, but a lot of this is very subjective. I find that if you think about it a little bit it appears to fall apart (maybe), but if you look just a bit more than that i think bleach is one of the most consistent shonen manga in terms of keeping with the rules of its established world. Details like Old Man Zangetsu controlling Ichigo's blood during the kenpachi fight in soul society, squad 0 being mentoned very early on, Ichibe potentially blocking OMZ from saying his true name, Yhwach, to ichigo when they first meet, the toxicity of hollows to pure quincies that poses an existential threat, really only add to the story in terms of cohesion and attention to detial and these are only instances connecting to tybw directly. In terms of character writing, developments are often a bit more subtle (relative to a lot of bleach's shonen contemporaries) and actions are rarely "out of character," and if they seem to be that way, its often deliberate. I think the biggest critiques of bleach could be described as just the biggest critiques of lots of shonen as you said, specifically long-running shonen. An oversized cast, formulaic fights, sometimes repetitive plot beats.

I feel like most of those comments are just highlighting something they liked that he didn't, which is fine, and it's obviously what people are going to focus on. I wish people were more respectful however, as its simply a difference in how people view/engage with the story.

bleach power system is fully related to psychology, shadow self, true self, persona and so on. seeing how the powers of the factions relate to one or more aspects of psychology is interesting let alone plot relevant after all. even now with the revelations of the soul king stuff, the novels and the hell arc are all complementary. it takes a bit of work many gloss over unfortunately. a bit of knowledge on carl yung themes helps a lot or a few videos on youtube ahah.
it seems people want everything to be spoonfed like how do you even come to a conclusion that there is no theme in the series, people really suffer from illiteracy

There is a 96 page paper from Columbia University that goes into just the Buddhist symbolism bleach has. There is plenty of substance there. The worldbuilding gets deeper and deeper the more you learn about it. If you're genuinely interested in learning about the deep lore of bleach Radman has a lot of good analysis videos. Personally I started understanding more and more about the bleach world and all of the symbolism and themes after every time I rewatch/reread it.
BLEACH isn't style over substance, Kubo's just one of the most stylish artists to ever walk on this earth. The manga is peak throughout but I'm glad the anime is doing it justice especially now, but also during Fullbring/The Lost Agent arc. Candy is also my favorite sternritter, she's amazing.

I remember the Style over Substance point and I still heavily agree. For me the aspect that made me such a bleach fan was that I had to go back and re-read several times to catch all the subtext and poetry, point being that those aspects are intentionally executed in a way that can and will be missed. Whereas the "Style" is very notable and poignant from the start to the end, it's a part of the story that anyone can glean, even those who've yet to watch/read the series.

1:30 Small thing, but the original anime had unique and stylish title cards as well. With no title card ever being the same. So it's a weird thing to pull out as the first difference between the two.
The Zangetsu being ichigos Quincy power in the form of Yuha from 1000 years ago is GENIUS foreshadowing by Kubo. If you go back to Episode 19 When ichigo first enters his inner world and "Zangetsu" tries to tell ichigo his name, in the Manga you can see his name is BRUSHED out which was done by Ichibei and if you hear it in the SUB version you can hear him say " Baha..." but its distorted, gotta listen closely. Ichigo also being a quincy was foreshadow super early on with many moments. Once you read TYBW and revisit OG Bleach it gets even better with all the knowledge you've gained. its crazy
all of the ribbons when he first chose the zampakuto are white, which are quincy spiritual ribbons same as uryuu. the only one red was indeed the only one unsuppressed by dear quincy daddy. letting the comments for others to know.

I really don't get the world building falling apart take, I agree with bleach kind of being "more style than substance", but honestly the main reason to watch bleach past Soul Socioty is the world building and character bs, in Ichigo, a lot of the world building and character development can basically be wrapped into a single story. Hot take, but Bleach's fights have mostly been underwhelming compared to other Shounen anime, you have a couple of standout fights like Kenpachi vs Ichigo, but honestly Bleach has less cool fights than an anime like Naruto or One Peace, and that's coming from someone who's really not a big fan of either of those shows. I've always found the reason I was interested in Bleach to be the world building, I wanted to see where Hollows come from, I wanted to see how they develop, I wanted to know how the Quincys were slaughtered, I wanted to know wtf the soul king was and why Aizen hated it so much, I wanted to know where tf Zanpakuto come from and what the deal was with humans randomly having spiritual powers. The fights in og Bleach are ok, but I don't think ok fights are really enough to get anywhere close to Bleach's level of success, I think the ideas presented make you want to know about the world, and since most of the world building is done in how it is relevant to our characters, it makes you want to know more about the characters. It's by no means close to a perfect story, but I think it's a great method of telling a story.
What I only wished for TYBW was that the sternritters/other quincies came out of nowhere or I just missed something )no spoilers pls if it's in cour 3/4) I wished we had at least one sternritter appearing in OG Bleach 10 years ago for 1 episode and we didn't got any explanation for that character until this arc.
I get what you mean but, in terms of story, it makes sense you dont see any sternritters in og bleach. mainly, since theyre meant to be in hiding which makes sense. secondly, we did kinda have a few quincies in og bleach. Ichigo, Yhw(as zangestu), masaki, uryu, ryuken,soken. (theyre all mainly side characters but the concept was always there. I also think the group known as "sternritters" is a new concept yhwach created. after all they were the licht reich before, now theyre the wandenreich. I mainly think it makes sense for the story, with them hiding in the wandenreich.

Like say make Bazz-B appear in one episode, for a few second looking at shinigamis passing above the town, they don't need to make him show that he's related to quincies at all by hinting about his necklace or using his powers at all, just a small appearance so that in TYBW we will say "IT'S THAT GUY!!" 2) I was ofc talking about the wandenreich, ofc I know Quincies still exists, I have watched the show. However I was mainly pointing about the quincies that appeared in TYBW, there's literally no hints they exist before unlike Ychwach. 3) It doesn't makes sense if they have only been hiding in the shadow for the past 1000 years because as you said the sternritters are a new concept, and don't forget the fact that they are stil just humans, they all came from the human world just like Ishida, which means we could definitely see them before in OG Bleach. They don't even have to be sternritters at that time, just a small scene of one of them appearing as an easter egg.

Well kubo made bleach so cool and stylist that people overlook it's substance. It's substance is as good as any other anime. It's plot is not as deep as naruto but it's better handled. But yeah bleach is the most coolest and stylish anime and it's a fact.
I feel like the directin & pace of the adaptation is A LOT weaker compared to before & visually I prefer how the old anime looked near the end of its run compared to this but I won't blame bleach itself for this the director jus kinda isn't the best at portrayin bleach & they have a pretty low ep count

I really wanted Byakuya to die on cour 1 even though he's one of my fav characters growing up (cause he just looks so cool to 13 year old me), esp how the cinematic looked when he was smashed in the wall with the ost and everything... however I'm also glad he was alive just for that scene with Rukia's Bankai, him actually praising Rukia is just so great of a plot scene.

Fun fact, Kubo had fully intended for Byakuya to die where he stood after delivering the final words to Ichigo , but fan outcry and (definitelydeathreats) made Kubo bring him back

Mostly everyone in the fandom would agree that he should have died but i think if you look at his journey again then this moment is when his most substance as a character comes out.

That kinda fake-out death shit despite how dark and grim the situation was is the kinda stuff I would only expect from the like’s of Fairy Tail. Everything Kubo did there was to make us believe he was dying, and it would’ve been flawless. Byakuya had already completed his character arc. He went from an unfeeling brother and captain to someone who valued both his adopted sister and lieutenant and even grew to respect and depend on the mc whom he once vowed to destroy. His death would’ve been a personal weight for all of them to overcome. I don’t wanna believe Kubo would willingly choose the “Fairy Tail approach” to what was clearly a character’s death scene. Someone’s gonna have to prove to me that Kubo did it just to fuck with the audience. :l

BLEACH isn't style over substance, Kubo's just one of the most stylish artists to ever walk on this earth. The manga is peak throughout but I'm glad the anime is doing it justice especially now, but also during Fullbring/The Lost Agent arc. Candy is also my favorite sternritter, she's amazing.

I remember the Style over Substance point and I still heavily agree.
For me the aspect that made me such a bleach fan was that I had to go back and re-read several times to catch all the subtext and poetry, point being that those aspects are intentionally executed in a way that can and will be missed.
Whereas the "Style" is very notable and poignant from the start to the end, it's a part of the story that anyone can glean, even those who've yet to watch/read the series.

The funny part about this is that Yhwach is directly named after Jewish God. Quincies keep their Christian based outfits and in general the German part of their designs is based on earlier German Empire (which is before Austrian Painter and his crew). The Zangetsu being ichigos Quincy power in the form of Yuha from 1000 years ago is GENIUS foreshadowing by Kubo. If you go back to Episode 19 When ichigo first enters his inner world and "Zangetsu" tries to tell ichigo his name, in the Manga you can see his name is BRUSHED out which was done by Ichibei and if you hear it in the SUB version you can hear him say " Baha..." but its distorted, gotta listen closely. Ichigo also being a quincy was foreshadow super early on with many moments. Once you read TYBW and revisit OG Bleach it gets even better with all the knowledge you've gained. its crazy
all of the ribbons when he first chose the zampakuto are white, which are quincy spiritual ribbons same as uryuu. the only one red was indeed the only one unsuppressed by dear quincy daddy. letting the comments for others to know.

This arc can be criticized for a multitude of reasons, but not from this dismissive perspective, that Bleach is some sort of special child and needs to be treated accordingly. I really don't get the world building falling apart take, I agree with bleach kind of being "more style than substance", but honestly the main reason to watch bleach past Soul Socioty is the world building and character bs, in Ichigo, a lot of the world building and character development can basically be wrapped into a single story.
Hot take, but Bleach's fights have mostly been underwhelming compared to other Shounen anime, you have a couple of standout fights like Kenpachi vs Ichigo, but honestly Bleach has less cool fights than an anime like Naruto or One Peace, and that's coming from someone who's really not a big fan of either of those shows.
I've always found the reason I was interested in Bleach to be the world building, I wanted to see where Hollows come from, I wanted to see how they develop, I wanted to know how the Quincys were slaughtered, I wanted to know wtf the soul king was and why Aizen hated it so much, I wanted to know where tf Zanpakuto come from and what the deal was with humans randomly having spiritual powers.
The fights in og Bleach are ok, but I don't think ok fights are really enough to get anywhere close to Bleach's level of success, I think the ideas presented make you want to know about the world, and since most of the world building is done in how it is relevant to our characters, it makes you want to know more about the characters.
It's by no means close to a perfect story, but I think it's a great method of telling a story.

I wished we had at least one sternritter appearing in OG Bleach 10 years ago for 1 episode and we didn't got any explanation for that character until this arc.
I get what you mean but, in terms of story, it makes sense you dont see any sternritters in og bleach.
mainly, since theyre meant to be in hiding which makes sense.
secondly, we did kinda have a few quincies in og bleach. Ichigo, Yhw(as zangestu), masaki, uryu, ryuken,soken. (theyre all mainly side characters but the concept was always there.
I also think the group known as "sternritters" is a new concept yhwach created. after all they were the licht reich before, now theyre the wandenreich.
I mainly think it makes sense for the story, with them hiding in the wandenreich.

Like say make Bazz-B appear in one episode, for a few second looking at shinigamis passing above the town, they don't need to make him show that he's related to quincies at all by hinting about his necklace or using his powers at all, just a small appearance so that in TYBW we will say "IT'S THAT GUY!!"
2) I was ofc talking about the wandenreich, ofc I know Quincies still exists, I have watched the show. However I was mainly pointing about the quincies that appeared in TYBW, there's literally no hints they exist before unlike Ychwach.
3) It doesn't makes sense if they have only been hiding in the shadow for the past 1000 years because as you said the sternritters are a new concept, and don't forget the fact that they are stil just humans, they all came from the human world just like Ishida, which means we could definitely see them before in OG Bleach. They don't even have to be sternritters at that time, just a small scene of one of them appearing as an easter egg.

Well kubo made bleach so cool and stylist that people overlook it's substance. It's substance is as good as any other anime. It's plot is not as deep as naruto but it's better handled. But yeah bleach is the most coolest and stylish anime and it's a fact.

I really wanted Byakuya to die on cour 1 even though he's one of my fav characters growing up (cause he just looks so cool to 13 year old me), esp how the cinematic looked when he was smashed in the wall with the ost and everything... however I'm also glad he was alive just for that scene with Rukia's Bankai, him actually praising Rukia is just so great of a plot scene.

Mostly everyone in the fandom would agree that he should have died but i think if you look at his journey again then this moment is when his most substance as a character comes out.
@@luffys_ I’m sorry but this is a war arc, and Byakuya surviving after Kubo worked so hard to drive it home just cheapen’s the stake’s so much. That kinda fake-out death shit despite how dark and grim the situation was is the kinda stuff I would only expect from the like’s of Fairy Tail. Everything Kubo did there was to make us believe he was dying, and it would’ve been flawless. Byakuya had already completed his character arc. He went from an unfeeling brother and captain to someone who valued both his adopted sister and lieutenant and even grew to respect and depend on the mc whom he once vowed to destroy. His death would’ve been a personal weight for all of them to overcome. I don’t wanna believe Kubo would willingly choose the “Fairy Tail approach” to what was clearly a character’s death scene. Someone’s gonna have to prove to me that Kubo did it just to fuck with the audience. :l
