In the future, to save time being underneath a hot vehicle... You don't have to bring it to operating temp. That suggestion is to ensure that you check the level while the torque converter is full and hasn't had much time to drain back into the reservoir...
The old way was to check with the engine running. Set the parking brake, put the tranny into "D", and let it idle there while you fill it up.
With it running, the fluid pump is filling the torque converter. And with it in gear, the valve body and planets are also filling. Serving the same purpose as the "running temperature" approach.
Assuming you don't wear out your arms from pumping, you'll be done and out from underneath before things get hot. That way, you won't roast your peanuts.

Right and wrong, the reason you need your fluid to be at operating temp is because your transmission fluid (like all fluids) expand at higher temperatures. This gives you a higher level, and is why it needs to be at operating temp.
