He has served on the faculty of the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, and since 2013 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he is the head of the cardiology department.
    Williams has served as president of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, chairman of the Coalition of Cardiovascular Organizations, and chairman of the board of the Association of Black Cardiologists, among other positions.

    2019 ACC/AHA Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles...
    "When the PREDIMED cohort was reanalyzed post hoc for the “provegetarian” food pattern (more vegetable consumption versus animal, egg, fish, dairy, or meat product consumption), a significant mortality rate reduction (41%) was noted in the 2 quintiles with the highest vegetarian score."
    " A comparison of plant and animal protein from the Adventist Health Study-2 cohortS3.1-10 similarly indicated that using meat for protein was associated with a 61% increase in mortality rate, whereas replacing meat with nuts and seeds was associated with a 40% reduction in mortality rate. "
    " Similarly, the graded risk published by Song et al. indicated that lower mortality rate was associated with replacing animal protein of different origins with plant protein."
    "Data from NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys) suggest that high consumption of sodium, red meat, and sugar-sweetened beverages and processed red meat consumption were associated with cardiovascular death."
    "A prospective cohort study of US healthcare professional with at least 1 risk factor indicated that replacement of animal protein (sources of cholesterol, saturated fat, heme iron and precursors of trimethylamine-N-oxide) with plant protein was associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality rate. In that study, compared with plant protein, poultry and fish were associated with a 6% higher mortality rate, dairy with an 8% higher mortality rate, unprocessed red meat with a 12% higher mortality rate, eggs with a 19% higher mortality rate, and processed red meat with a 34% higher mortality rate. Overall, plant protein was associated with a reduction in mortality rate of 10% for every 3% energy increment replacement of animal protein."

    My first time hearing this doctor. I am amazed at everything he is saying. It has been my story. I stated a vegan lifestyle in June 2023 and I am so thankful. I have experienced all of the issues on the American diet for all my life. Finally, changed to vegan. I pray I can continue this lifestyle and my health gets better. Where is this doctor located?

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'm not sure I think he's in Kentucky. That's awesome You're on this path! Do you keep in mind vegan is a philosophy not necessarily a diet but it just so happens to be the healthiest way of eating seems to be the most vegan and there is a learning curve for a lot of people since they haven't been doing this prior to going vegan. If you do have any issues consult someone who practices lifestyle medicine. I like to think about it like it's legumes, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seed, herbs and spices and a variety of each. And that's what works for me essentially. But how someone else may implement this in their life maybe totally different than how I do. But as a vegan you will find a way to make this work and won't be persuaded by social influence.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Awesome! So glad you're on the right path. Be careful with how you word things, words are very powerful. Treats are things that are good for you and moderation and healthy things. Something that isn't necessarily good for you or that hurts others isn't a treat really :-). But I'm not trying to be judgmental or too critical we all have a learning curve to endure. The first year is usually the most challenging of course. And even the most long time or lifelong seasoned best at this still or learning things. The closer you can get to whole plant foods such as legumes, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices and a well-planned variety of each that fits your routine and sits well with your disposition the better!

    Let’s please continue to say refrain from using oil so that it is not so confusing out there, where this topic changes frequently like a roller coaster ride. Most people living outside of the Mediterranean region use far too much oil, so when you are giving permission to use oil, then you are basically giving people permission to use too much oil, since most people I know cannot moderate the amount. I recently visited the mediterranean region for a wedding and olive oil is placed in a bottle available beside the food served and people drizzle very small amounts of it on the food, they do not pour tablespoonfuls of it on everything like I have witnessed many people do who use oil here in Canada and also USA.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I get what you're saying but at the same time people who are actually eating healthy need good messages too and oil is so packed full of polyphenols it makes no sense to demonize it only. We can totally educate people on proper use. I have other cardiologists saying the same thing even on this channel.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      What's interesting is the conference he was at is entirely no oil, salt or sugar. So I was really surprised when he gave oil the green light. I figured it would be controversial too... But I keep hearing so many good things about it it's hard not to resist just being straight up and helping create a solid message. At the end of the day moderation is key as well as variety. But only moderation of good things. So you don't want to eat a bunch of spinach, but this doesn't mean tell people not to eat spinach.... Hope that makes sense

    • @dinamariea61
      @dinamariea61 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@VeganLinked I totally agree and good point you made about providing good messages too. I personally used to use small amounts of olive oil in my salad and loved it. But I gave it up in 2019 and have not used it since per the feedback from many plant based cardiologists including Dr. Kahn, who now says the same thing as Dr. Kim Williams. Dr. Joel Khan is now pro olive oil. I guess they both read the same study. Now when I do have some olive oil in my food I am not so worried about it, but at home I continue to make my dressings with whole nuts and seeds. I also have some olives on my salad too. I think it’s a good point too that if a person needs to lose weight, maybe stay away from the oil for now until the optimum weight is achieved. I wish I had gone to the conference!

So I started wondering why are they all doing this, what am I missing. So as I was looking through their descriptions and all of the tools, books etc they use I saw a book listed I’ve never seen before. Eating solid pig and cow fat! Plus they are desensitizing their child to the death of their animal friends in order to eat them. It's confusing that Dr. Kim William (whom I love listening to) pretends that, for slim and healthy people, the use of olive oil, which has beneficial effects on cholesterol is ok when there are studies showing that olive oil is harmful to endothelial function. Perhaps it is better to obtain the good fats (mono and polyunsaturated) through a small consumption of whole foods such as nuts, seeds, olives, avocados instead of oil.

    • @reason3581
      @reason3581 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Olive oil can negatively affect endothelial function transiently (post-prandial) according to some studies but haven’t been shown to be detrimental long term AFAIK.

      Actually there is more evidence to support olive oil than there is against it at least when you listen to people like Nick the Nutrivore it has done extensive research on it. And that's probably why Bryan Johnson who spends $2 million dollars a year for 30 scientists and doctors to help him determine the best diet for his 78 organs consumes olive oil everyday like in every meal.

      Dr Greger, Dr Barnard, Dr Esselstyn, Dr Campbell and others say that we should keep oil low and even, eliminate it. It seems that olive oil is deprived of nutriments and has only a little amount of polyphenols. The reason why it has good reputation maybe because of the fact that it is used as a replacement for more harmful fats and also because those who use olive oil, in general, consume more plants.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      well, I guess it's who you follow. I follow all of those people you mention and a few others and the ones that I think are in the most know seem to say otherwise. But, to be fair, I can't say for sure that the oil I have access to and rarely use is not rancid.
      Some people take what some doctors say and overgeneralize it. Like being nut scared.
      I also can't be sure the flax doesn't have too much arsenic, the nuts don't have mycotoxins, overspray on organic, forever chemicals, etc. Well, I'm being dramatic I guess. My point is, there's definitely a wrong and right way to do just about everything, so don't eat too much spinach... @@rfon3158

    Weird ..."pescatarians were found to have a 13% lower risk of CHD than the meat-eaters, while the vegetarians and vegans had a 22% lower risk"
    But those on plant-based diets had a 20% higher risk of stroke

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah, it's really hard to know exactly what's going on there especially considering the fact that pescatarian is a very specific diet, vegetarian is a very specific diet, and vegan is not a diet at all. So, if someone was on a well-planned whole Food plant-based diet that is vegan I know more what that means but still this doesn't tell us enough. I've heard the increase risk factor for stroke, but I'm not sure if it was a significant enough value and how many studies have demonstrated that observation. But the thing I'm curious about most is, what were those vegans even eating/doing? Could it be that they were just living longer and inevitably going to die of something? Could it be that they were just more active the older they got and maybe pushing themselves too hard? Could it be that they were vegan for ethical reasons and didn't really care about their diet at all? Could it be maybe they cared but didn't know the importance of fatty acids in their diet like a lot of vegans are finally starting to acknowledge and that is eating enough seeds and nuts. Could it be maybe we need to be consuming more algae, mushrooms, so many variables. But I suspect most of those vegans were probably ethical vegans especially if it was a longitudinal study going back before vegans really started integrating healthier ways of eating such as keeping it as much whole plant food as possible, like legumes, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices and a planned variety of each. It would be interesting to look at the data of the study you're referring to and see if there's a way to parse that out, maybe control for that a little bit somehow if they acquired enough information from whatever food survey or whatever they did. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, we're all going to die from something most likely. Being vegan gives you a decrease in all cause mortality and that's the most important variable. Because you can't predict what's going to be the most likely thing unless you start getting into your genetic makeup and try to implement more epigenetic maneuvers.

So I'm very eager to take the next step to WFPB and hope it makes the difference for me so that I don't have to go on meds. How realistic is it, long-term? I think I'm aiming for 90-95%, because I don't think I can commit to never eating another processed food item forever.

    • @VeganLinked

      How realistic is it long-term really depends on what you do to learn and implement what you learn. I have some tips for people to consider on veganlinked.com/govegan where you can find things like the daily dozen app by nutritionfacts.org which is totally free and backed by the science. You may also find links to people that offer programs to help you learn how to eat this way properly + chefs that have TH-cam channels and so on. I focus on legumes, greens, greens, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices and a variety of each. Best wishes, once you figure it out it's actually easy, very rewarding, and ultimately for everyone I know that has ever done this the best thing they have ever done for their body, mind, heart, others, and the planet

      I believe he is talking about mammals that are herbivores instead of the mammals that are carnivores. I believe most of the plant based leaders say humans mostly mimic herbivores, which is why humans get plaque in the arteries when animal products are eaten over time.

    I’d be interested in vegan docs speaking about brain health. Many in the high fat community speak of how low fat diets and especially plant based diets are terrible for brain health and has lead to Alzheimer’s. Also about high fat for epilepsy.
    Cardiac health is one thing but I’m thinking about a whole body approach. Doesn’t sound me any good to be heart healthy if my brain is crap. (I currently eat a vegan diet but with some oils like avocado, olive, and coconut-very minimal coconut ).
    That being said, while my LDL dropped significantly going vegan as compared to carnivore (which I used to eat), my triglycerides have skyrocketed eating vegan. I eat whole food vegan except a drizzle of oil for cooking here and there.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The high-fat community just loves to make up random s***. There is actually a couple by the name of brain docs who are vegan you can check out. Their names are doctors Dean and Ayesha Sherzais. They are both neuroscientists. I have a video of them doing a talk late last year you can see on my channel. There was even a person I met in a restaurant right before that talk who happened to be going to that talk who read their book the Alzheimer's solution and this man was able to reverse his cognitive decline by reading their book. That testimony is on my channel as well. You can also look into Dr Dean Ornish, he is doing research on this as well. Chris with plant chompers has talked about this and interviewed some neuroscientists. I think he's even said that you'll never find a carnivore neuroscientist for a reason. There's even evidence that amyloid plaques may come from excess methionine which is one of the potential problems with eating animals.
      A vegan diet does not need to be a low-fat diet. You can eat nuts and seeds and avocados and even add oil to your diet. Bryan Johnson is a fun one to check out. He spends millions on a team of 30 doctors to analyze all of his organs and tailor his diet to live as healthy as possible. It's a little wild with how he goes about it but he is vegan. Dr Joel Fuhrman has expressed concern with vegans potentially having issues with cognitive health if they don't supplement DHA EPA. But the Sherzais appear to think it may not be necessary until you're in your '60s. Dr nagra recently shared a video about the benefits of consuming oil especially if you have the apoe4 Gene I think it is. Dr Dean Ornish has this gene which is interesting. I think Dr Greger has mentioned that there are certain populations maybe one in particular in Africa that was studied that had a high prevalence of this Gene but low prevalence of Alzheimer's and if I recall correctly that may have been a plant prominent population but I'm not sure.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't know why you're saying vegan when you used to be carnivore. It sounds like you're eating plant-based. If you're just diet hopping that's not what veganism is about. Your triglycerides may be more about activity. Exercise is important too in using your brain. The Sherzais talked about this in the talk they gave that I referenced is on my channel. For example learn something new like take on a new hobby like playing music or something. This challenges the brain and builds new connections. When they mentioned exercise they said something along the lines of having bigger legs makes bigger brains if I recall correctly. And of course sleep is important as well which is something Bryan Johnson is very adamant about. He says sleep is non-negotiable. And I think there's been studies that have shown that sleep helps clear out amyloid plaques. Lifestyle medicine looks at Health as a lot more than just nutrition. There's the pillars of lifestyle medicine such as sleep, exercise, stress Management, not doing drugs, social support, etc. And of course drugs can shrink certain parts of your brain.
      Please don't use the word vegan if you're not vegan. A vegan is a vegan because of ethical reasons. They have realized the moral obligation and actualize this in their life. When it comes to Health that is very important but It is not a prerequisite or requirement of veganism although I do like to put a lot of focus on that because I do want it to be a part of veganism. But the ethics are quintessential.

      As for oil, you will see a lot of support for oil these days especially with people like Dr Nagra reporting on the science. I interviewed cardiologist Dr Kim Williams recently and he recommended oil. Cardiologist Dr Khan also recommended oil. I even have a fun interview with Jesus who drinks a lot of oil lol. And Bryan Johnson guzzles oil as well And even sells his own brand, snake oil 🙂. The idea I think is to get a good ratio of omega-6 and omega-3. So you're going to want to make sure you get plenty of things like flaxseed and walnuts and so on... You can get omega-6 from other sources besides oil but it seems a good source of third party tested legit oil may be very advantageous.

    Just to clarify and help others .. a WFPB diet is not Vegan ! . WFPB allows only Whole Foods and not processed foods...whereas a vegan diet allows for processed foods such as Vegan Cakes, candy, pizza, pies, cheese etc.. hope this helps clarify .. the term " WFPB Vegan " is not correct as they are two different diets with some similarities.. 😊

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Just to clarify, veganism is philosophy to not exploit animals as much as practicable. Many processed foods are designed to exploit the human animal and the concept of veganism. In the event that a processed food is not healthy for the vegan it is not as vegan as a whole food. When whole Vegan foods are the best for vegans they are the most vegan because they enable us to role model what is best and make it more attractive to the non-vegan, they make veganism sustainable and sane, healthy whole vegan foods do not skew the science negatively for vegans making the most reasonable way of eating, whole Vegan foods such as whole foods plant-based foods that include mushrooms and algae are least invasive to wildlife because they require less resources and packaging, while these these may have originated from different lanes they are merging beautifully. So it is most advantageous and rational to embrace this. Don't be scared of the next level

      that's irrelevant. Lustgarten takes so many sardines it's hard to know what would happen without them. An omega 3 supplement, if that's what you're after with fish, would be better from an algae supplement; after all, this is where the f***ing fish get it from. At the end of the day, we're neither of these people. And because I can be vegan I am. Who these other people are have no relevance to what you can and should ultimately do.
      I have every reason to believe not eating animals is best for not only the animals but everyone and everything; wildlife, the environment in general, communities, jobs, essentially the health of everything including humans. If we find something to be advantageous that could only be synthesized by animal it's likely something we already do endogenously.
      Plants are consistent with health, peace, sustainability, and love on every level. Eating animals is just violent, deadly, destructive, and ignorant or once you know better dumb. But, if there's something that is only produced by animal you would probably need more than you would get from animal and because what you consume is a package deal that would just raise the risk factors exponentially higher. So, the most sane thing to do in every way is to just be vegan and if you want more than what a well planned whole food plant based vegan way of eating legumes, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, seaweeds, nuts, seeds, herbs & spices offers than take a supplement. I mean, I can only speak for myself, from my experience. I only supplement B12 and D though.
      If you're trying get omega 3, it seems like an algae based supplement would be cleaner (easier to control for dioxins, PCB's, Mercury, BMAA, etc), more sustainable, and most humane. I personally just eat whole plant foods and strive for more than the RDA of about 1.6 ALA and call it the day. But, I have fresh milled flax consistently. @@Battery-kf4vu
