  • In this video, Fr. Mike Schmitz answers questions about the Catholic Faith from his audience, as he’s known to do from time to time. In his first answer, he offers a few practical ways to be a truly helpful confirmation sponsor. Then, he reaches back to the time of Moses to explain the roots of the male priesthood. As always, his answers are both informative and engaging.

The Father and the Son are Parents of the Holy Spirit, if many churches are correct.Stay home to avoid coronavirus and flu. If many churches are correct, The Trinity is a Family-- two Parents and a Progeny, just like a human family.(Humans are created in the "image" and "likeness" of God according to Genesis 1:26) In the book of Job, which is part of the Bible, the Lord is compared to a father and also a mother with a womb "From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens?"-Job 38:29. Because God can also be thought of like a mother (Isaiah 42:14, Isaiah 66:13, Matthew 23:37), all three roles (father, mother, progeny) in a basic human family are filled in the Trinity. Saying the Father and the Son are Parents of the Holy Spirit is simply another way of saying "the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son" which has been official Catholic doctrine for centuries. The Church teaches that the Son is begotten from the Father. If this is true, the Father is the Father (Parent)of the Son. The Church teaches that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. If this is true, the Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (second edition) paragraph 246, the Holy Spirit's "nature and subsistence" is "at once(simul) from the Father and the Son."If the Church considers Mary as mother(parent) of God even if Mary isn't the first source of Christ's humanity(God is the first source), then the Son can also be rightly called a Parent of God(the Holy Spirit). The scriptures are vague if the Holy Spirit is the 3rd or 2nd Person of the Trinity, whichever of these is true, the 1st and the 2nd may be the Parents of the 3rd. Stay home to avoid corona virus and flu.Parent definition: One that begets or brings forth offspring. Stay home to avoid corona virus and flu.

As a woman I understand, accept and agree with that. Personally, I don't want to have the role of a father. At my house I've had my mom and my dad. Both are extremely important in my life and both of them have had SO different roles. Also, I'm an active part of my church community and I can closely see exactly those mother and father roles among priests and nuns. Let them men be priests, we women have different capabilities and responsibilities. And I don't need a title to prove I'm great.

@@roboboro Even if there are fundimental differences between men and women, their capacity to perform any function is based on their individual qualities NOT the inherent qualities of their sex. There are many male nurses. Being catholic is the best! I love Catholicism. There is this Protestant guy who I thought was my Godly friend, it turned out that he got distant and told me "he wishes I wasn't catholic" In my thought, he doesn't know what he means. The catholic faith is so wonderful. Many don't understand. Secretly, I hope he becomes catholic some day :P
In my short words,The sacrament of confirmation is being born again out of the Holy Spirit. It's like when Protestants say "born again"
Confirmation is confirming our faith on Jesus and we opt to say Jesus is our Savior and we opt to defend our faith. I love being catholic and hopefully the Lord will illuminate others to come and become detectives to know why we are catholic and become Catholics. :)

If you're still exploring this topic, and want something a little more academic, but also striving for faithfulness to Christ's teaching through the Church, Women in Christ by Michele Schumacher has some awesome essays in it, which could be helpful if you're looking to get into the nitty gritty of human anthropology, and how we understand the incredible gift of womanhood in the light of Christ. Just for everyone's information, in most Eastern Churches and in Western Church before celibate priesthood was enforced, priests could be married (before ordination) meaning that many parishes had a Father-Mother couple involved in running it (obviously in different roles). But "Mother" is still the title of address for a priest's wife, if you ever visit an Eastern Catholic or Orthodox Church with a married priest.

The answer about the Women priest makes so much sense . I don't know what the fuss is about. I know we are moving towards a most emancipated world but for the world to function most of us will need to know our place to better serve God. This is why so many marriages are failing . People don't know their roles anymore in the households, everyone trying to be the other our outdo the other. It's not a competition guys. I am a woman and i know I can become anything I want to be in life, but just like Men can't bare children certain roles should stay what they are for the sake of our society. We can very well still thrive and support each other and success to the fullest of our potential and stay true to our role and what it mean to be a woman and a mother.

I totally agree with you. I do however think that women should be given their equal role in the church too. Not just one who bakes cookies for the church picknick. That is not to say they should substitute men in their role as priests, absolutely not. But I feel that their role and contribution in the church is not carved out much yet.

#askfrmike: I'm not sure if this is the right place to submit a question to Fr Mike but here it goes. What advice does he have regarding adults who grew up as children under codependency problems of their parents (i.e. narcissism/enablers, alcoholics, borderline personality disorder, etc). Usually, these people have grown up knowing only a conditional love/manipulation/lies, etc. Even though they desperately want to, they often have an impossible time breaking the cycle of abuse, usually because they have a hard time setting up limits as it relates to their family. Catholic catechism and doctrine always addresses love & honor of parents, but never comments how someone like this should relate to their family. How can the Catholic church help heal such a person - especially in trying to teach them what real, God like love is?

One thing that I would suggest is that anyone who is in this very unfortunate situation seek professional help. There are Catholic therapists out there. Ask your parish social services for guidance in finding one. In conjunction with a therapist, you can talk with a spiritual companion/guide (I can’t think of the correct name...). I have been through therapy sessions several times in my life. It can be painful but so necessary. I only wish I had known about the spiritual aspect. I was just coming back to my Catholic faith at the time & was greatly lacking in Catholic education. I’m still learning at age 61. That’s why I listen to Fr. Mike! I will pray that you all find the help you need. May God enfold you with His love & peace💖

I've had this problem too, I found forgiving my parents to be very helpful, (though it tool a long time as I had left the Catholic faith in my early teens and was getting bad advice since then on this issue) and understanding that they probably came from similar situations, which weren't their fault either, and on it goes back to Adam and Eve. I still get angry and bitter sometimes, even often, but I work on it with the help of God. I use St. Joseph and Our Lady and Jesus as examples of right thinking in these matters now and unconditional love. I just hope God forgives the mess I made of my life, I still have trouble forgiving myself. Take care from the future.

+Teresa Looy How exciting that you are looking into the Catholic Church. I'm a recent convert from the Episcopal church and I will pray for you. These are some ways of looking at women's ordination that have helped me...not sure how theological they are...
In the sacraments of the Eucharist and reconciliation in the Catholic Church the priest acts "in persona Christi." The way I understand it is that when the priest is saying the words to consecrate the bread and wine saying, "This is my body...this is my blood..." He is, for those moments, Jesus here with us. And again in the sacrament of reconciliation when the priests gives absolution, he forgives us in the person of Christ since God is who we have sinned against, not the priest. And since God chose to send his son as a male, he has decided that only men can act on his behalf in this way in the sacraments.
It's actually something that the pope couldn't change even if he wanted to because we have to keep the substances of the sacraments as Jesus left them to us. The bread and wine must be bread and wine...the priest can't substitute rice cakes and juice. And in the sacrament of marriage the substance is a man and a woman. This is why the church can't change marriage to include two men or two women. And ordination to the deaconate or priesthood is a sacrament where the substance is a man. (My understanding here...)
Another thing is the fact that women can't be ordained isn't because women are not capable of leadership. It's not because women are weaker or less intelligent or anything like that. Women simply are not called to the type or level of service that men are through ordination. But we are all called to follow Jesus and devote our lives to him, whatever form that might take, vocation or not.
I think another part of the answer has to do with the way we look at priesthood. I think it is fair to say that deacons/priests/bishops/archbishops/pope are leaders. A more accurate description though, would be to call them servants. And the higher up the hierarchy you go, the deeper level of service and giving up of self is required. So by going up the ladder they are really going down it...And we are all in a position to serve others whatever our life circumstances are, even if just through prayer.
      Hope that helps a little!

+Teresa Looy I learned from a lecture given by Fr. Chad Ripperger posted on Sensus Fidelium (on TH-cam) that in the Creation, God ordained Adam as the first priest even before the fall. God gave Adam the authority to name things (which is a really huge deal), and placed everything under Adam's authority (gave him dominion). And when He created Woman, she, too, was subject to Adam. Dominion means protection, not tyranny, and in Eden that's how it was. But then the Woman stepped out from under the protection of Adam's spiritual authority and made a decision without consulting him on a spiritual matter. Adam had spiritual authority because it was ordained by God, so when the Woman stepped out from under the protection of Adam's authority, she also stepped out from under God's authority. But anyway, it all comes from God. When He sent His Son, He gave Him all Authority, and Christ in turn passed His Authority on to His Apostles...who in turn passed it on to their disciples, and so on to the present day. Christ's Authority is as the Bridegroom. His priests are His representatives, acting as bridegrooms to Christ's Bride, the Church.
Also, one apologist has pointed out that, in the Church, one role of the priest is to bring forth life through the consecration of the Blessed Sacrament. The only way for a man to be able to bring forth life is to become a Catholic priest, whereas women are consecrated at their own conception (notwithstanding the very rare instances where a woman is born unable to bear children; if she becomes infertile after being born, it doesn't detract from the consecration she received at her conception).

The best practice that I have seen in a church, was the older women would act as counselors to the younger women just as it describes in Titus 2.
Realize that not every woman wants to confess her sin to a man. I personally think that is inappropriate. Women counsel women and men counsel men. That is practical and appropriate. Nuff said.
The practical application is to find the older women (40 and over) who have the spiritual gift of counseling to help in the health of the local church.
So yes, we all need Spiritual Fathers and Mothers in our lives. These are the ones who provide the necessary discipleship that the church now desperately needs and longs for.
I grew up in the RCC, then was part of the churches of Christ, ended up going to every denomination possible and now believe and realize that Jesus' Church are those people who have the Gift of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
Thanks again for the video. God Bless you Father Mike.

Tom Broughton a lot of Catholic doctrine was created to hold consolidate power after Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in the 4th century and again after the reformation. It obviously was the churches intention to marginalize women from the beginning. Just because a canon is old doesn’t necessarily make it true. Or if you say a doctrine in Latin, that doesn’t make it true either. The church needs to evolve. Priests should be allowed to marry and women should be able to become priests.

Hello, I'll premise by saying I love these video series/youtube channel and I am so thankful I have found it. In re female priests, I would like to express my opinion, hoping I don't come across as too critical. As a little child I had the calling to serve God and wanted to be a priest, even though we had/have a number of nuns in the family, but I really would have loved taking care of a community, celebrate mass, be able to bless like priests do etc. To my surprise as a young child I was told girls can not do it, I thought and thought for many years about becoming a nun (because after all I had had the calling) but in the end I walked another path and I'm now happily married. That said, I have asked a priest friend about women priests and it's a topic that is still quite sensitive to me. The latest talks about accepting married male priests to make up for the shrinking numbers of priests also made me think why they would not consider accepting nuns or anyway female priests way before they start thinking of accepting already married priests or even allow priests to marry. Nuns are some of the best people I know, tough, funny, intelligent, sensitive..you name it. The explanation on why women are not allowed to be priests given in this video is a little similar to what I have heard in the past: rules, tradition, roles...but it really makes no sense, rules and traditions can be changed and have been changed in the past, the Church has the authority as well and nothing in the scriptures explicitly prohibits women from becoming priests (if there is, please where does it appear?). As a guide for a community, women would be great as to some degree we are usually more motherly and tend to be very empathetic. Parishes need priests, nowadays some priests have to care for 3-4 parishes at the same time, women could step in and help solve the problem right away.

I think you should think of Jesus and his 12 disciples as an example, they were all men. Jesus chose them all men because they would represent future priests. Also, God gave men and women different body and abilities. I believe God wants women and men to have different roles and responsibilities like a mother and father. Also, I believe God is a father figure and that is why Jesus was a man and why priests are men. That is why we have our blessed mother Mary taking such an important role. Every role is important and matters and though we may not understand, we must follow God’s will and the way he created us and therefore the roles he expects from us.

@@lourdesmachin9737 Well said. That explains the women priests and the trans community. Women and men were created different for a reason. God created men for certain roles their best suited for and roles women are best suited for. A man can’t give birth no matter how much he says he’s a woman. So we should all be thankful for the bodies and the roles God gave us. Who are we to question the creator of us all.

A big reason, I believe, that people have such a misunderstanding of what it means to be a priest is because most people do not know what the Mass is about. Most people see a priest as a guy who preaches, says some prayers, and gives communion. Most do not quite understand the sacrificial aspect of the Mass, and the priest acting "in persona Christi Capitas," as a medium between the congregation and God. What do you think?

Personally I'm inclined to say that men and women should have equal roles in the church. So we don't need female priests but we need the female part of, let's say "priesthood" for lack of better words. Someone who's equally involved and equally important in church service. Not just the nice female sidekick. If God made men and women then naturally he wanted both and needed both.

I think it's funny that nobody ever mentions that men can't be nuns. As a Catholic of only a year, it's very refreshing to me that the Church has different roles for men and women. Women are certainly not looked at as less valued than men in the Catholic Church. That's also refreshing to me. For most of my life I hated being a woman. In many Christian denominations women are considered much less valuable than men. The Catholic Church recognizes the difference between men and women, but values both. We need that now more than ever.

I'm a hardened ex-catholic who was once a postulation in a Benedictine Abbey, but I do enjoy watching Fr. Mike and I have a huge amount of respect for him. That being said I still have a hard time swallowing the whole explanation on why women can't be priests. To me it's both a heart and a head thing, and the issue is more complex than just stereotypical male/female roles. I understand what he's saying about the whole father and mother idea but in my family my mother and father were equal partners. They made decisions jointly, they budgeted the family finances jointly, they raised my siblings together in equal partnership. In the Catholic church male popes, cardinals, bishops and priests make all the decisions while religious sister in the church have ZERO power and no formal role in the church hierarchy. Many times when religious sisters try to step up, their local bishops are quick to remind them of their vow of obedience (which btw is technically to Christ not the church per say). I went to a private Catholic school in the late 80s and early 90s run by the Sisters of the Holy Name of Jesus and the sisters had no say in the curriculum, no say in school finances etc. It was all dictated by the Bishop's office. While I personally am in favor of female priests, the bigger issue is the lack of formal roles with power for women in the Catholic Church. During my time as a postulation brother, I came to the conclusion that the Catholic hierarchy is effectively an all boys club that doesn't want to let the girls in....harsh but true.

Nowadays, there are women on church councils and such who help in the decision-making in parishes, and thus in some ways take the place of the abbesses of before. I agree what you said here, men and women having different physical powers is more prominent in my home country China where many priests (mostly underground priests) are still working in relatively hard conditions. 10 years ago, some priests I know had to walk for 1.5 hours in cold winter midnight (here it means -25°C) to bless a dying person (forgot the English word for the sacrament sorry) and now it's still not that easy for priests' work. I am personally a female, and I really dreamt of being a priest since I was 7 years old. It is what it is. Just like I cannot pee in a standing position, men cannot give birth to babies, I cannot complain for these things. And men and women ARE EQUAL in values being a human or in front of God's eyes, they just have different features in many ways.

I was 10 our new parish priest kicked our Franciscan sisters out of our church when he transferred in. I remember visiting the elderly nuns in their little convent only one time before that-they were very sweet and meek. One sister led the choirs at church....but she was excused from that position as well. Later the priest was made a bishop. I don’t think the church “values” women less than men, but I can’t see any greater position in life than being able to offer mass. If I were able to bring communion to whosoever in need as a sister, I’d already be one. What does the church need female vocations for? What can I do as a nun that I cannot as a layperson? Also...you didn’t go all the way back to the beginning...just to Moses.

I know people have a tendency to refer to the dead as angels but this is simply incorrect as we are two separate creations. God loved humans so much He gave us free will so that we may choose Him. Angels are powerful creations of God that, can protect us in so many ways (see devotions to St. Michael, Dr. Raphael and At. Gabriel the Archangels). Hope this helps a little 😊

Tristen: I'm sorry that you were so disappointed. But I would mention two things that might help a little. First, your vocation is a calling that God makes to you. We don't choose our vocation; He calls us. Our job is to respond with "yes" (Lk 1:38). So I would suggest you pray for God to make clear how He wants you to serve. That's always a good starting point. Second, there are literally millions of ways you, as a woman, can serve in the Church (Nun, wife/mother, lector, extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, choir, organist, parish council, CCD/RCIA instructor or administrator, volunteer at Catholic hospitals, development officer for the diocese, etc. - and these are just a few!). And, of course, we're all called to be an good example for others to witness. There's plenty of work to do out there. So pray for God to give you direction and then roll up your sleeves and get at it. Dominus vobiscum!

Before i was under the impression that if i were a nun I would have to stay inside praying all day, and i still don't know much, but i think if you are a religious sister then you can do so many things like work in hospitals or teach at schools or run social media just all these things. i realize that i would actually get more of the things i thought that being a priest would give me, because priests are more concerned with running the parish and like doing mass and confession and stuff, whereas sisters are interacting with the community doing service and stuff? i dunno try researching nuns and sisters (i think nuns are the ones who mostly stay inside and pray) a bit more before deciding it isn't for you. since there are so few nuns and sisters today it's hard to be properly informed!

I feel like it because we’re made from a different essence and anointing. God made man in His image and anointed him in charge. The side of God that demands respect, authority, and gives protection to his people. When men operate in their commanding authority that God made him he is powerful! Women were made in the essence of His own heart and love anointed to co-create in motherhood and nurture both the children and her people. It’s not a matter of equality, it about living in the essences that we were created. Women are more powerful then we think just by being how he created us. It’s in our soft words and gentle nature that makes us strong. Man was told to protect the woman in the way the rib protects the heart. He made us to be happy but we can only do that if we live the way we were created. We have to trust him. This is why Paul said to men love their wives and women respect their husbands. It’s not a matter of absolute submission but a need. When women aren’t loved they become extremely hurt and likewise when man is not respected or disrespected.

I used to be Catholic, now I’m an Episcopalian. I have lots of fond memories of my Catholic youth and know Catholics generally are nice and warm hearted people. I also really respect you Father Mike and wish you well. And I understand this argument, but I feel like women should still be able to be priests. I just don’t find it justifiable that they cannot. Nevertheless, disagreement is an okay thing and I wish you well. God bless you and I’m praying for you and all your viewers and I look forward to watching more of your videos. They are really great!

1 Timothy 2:12-13, "But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve."
Women have no place to be a priest, pastor, etc. Your feelings don't get to change church Truth. Hopefully you return to the One True Church, since now you are outside the church and have lost your salvation. Extra Iglesiam Nulla Salus.

Do Episcopalians believe in the Eucharist? Leaving the truth over female priests seems odd. I don't know any Episcopalians so I am just very curious. Our church works with the Episcopalian church to feed the local people. Does the Episcopalian church believe in pro-life issues? Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Frank Ribeiro even though they have flawed view on women being priests that’s no reason to call them the devil. Completely inappropriate.

I pray for the spirits of the dead. May they be in peace, Love and light.
I pray for my Grandparents spirits and health and protection from any possessions of the dead to not harm the people and forgive the living in a loving way and that we may live in the love of God in light and harmony.
    Amen

    Fr Mike,
I am a woman and I agree that men’s ‘job’ are to be Priest. Plus I have many reasons/beliefs along with Catholic Church even from beginning lifetime history to aid in my reasonings. My point is ~ I’ve never heard requests of ‘Why can’t men become nuns’. Maybe, men think it’s only a woman’s job.

For me the term SPONSOR is new. Being from Guam we have a NINA and NINO (God-Mother and God-Father) during two events of our life. A Nina and Nino are chosen at the Christening of a baby child, and again at Confirmation. In summary, the responsibility is a life long responsibility to provide guidance and direction ensuring that the child stays in the direction of the Lord our God. PERIOD.
In a sense, we are an extention to the Mother and/or Father of that child in Jesus' name. In many times we are there almost equally in the raising of the child. I wish we could remove the term SPONSOR and use the Term God Mother or God Father. It is more personable to the individual. God Bless each and everyone who reads this.

I completely agree with your insight on the subject of Women Priests. Can you do a video on just that topic and how to explain it to someone else who doesn't understand?

The answer makes sense to me in terms of the thinking of the early church, but the world has changed, especially in the last 100 year; the church needs to change too.

100% agree with Father Mike. Women are too caught up on the desire to be priests without truly understanding what the role is.

But why was priesthood in the OT associated with fatherhood at all? Considering that ancient Israel (as with the other civilizations of the Ancient Near East) was a patriarchal society, it makes sense that the social/political/economic leaders of the family- the husband or patriarch- would also be the spiritual leader of the family. The patriarch would offer sacrifices on behalf of his family (such as Job 1:5). Every family had a father- a spiritual leader. Fast forward to the 21st century and we no longer live in a patriarchal society. Our social, political, and economic leaders can be either men or women. For some families, for whatever reason, the only leader is the mother. Does that then make her less of a spiritual leader? Why then, in a world where women can fill all other leadership roles that men can lead, should a woman be prohibited from living out her divine vocation and desire to serve?

Your answer about the female priests answered my question about it. I had wanted to be one when i was younger because my priest at my parish made me think about wanting to be one. I never knew why i couldn't. Thanks for the clarifying of why! :)

That is the best answer to why women can’t be priests I’ve ever heard. It’s not condescending at all and speaks from a place of reasoning and care. Thank you.

Sure once a woman studies the theology and is ordained she can say mass and be addressed as "mother". In my locality the locality Presbyterian woman minister does a great job of tending to her flock.
