What I really enjoy about your videos is the fact you explain why you do certain things as you do them, rather than just go through it and then show a finished product. I feel like I learn aspects of why things are done as well as seeing the results. I know I am about 5 years late to the party here :) I've subscribed now, and will likely do a bit of binge watching. Thank you
I watched every one of your shows on the local PBS station. But it's been years since I've seen an episode. So this is a special treat. I'll go back and watch them all. Fun.
I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel. I'm not a wood turner but I am a fan. It helps me relax. And the humor you add is priceless. Thank you for making such a fun channel.
I wish we were neighbors. Lathe work is mesmerizing. Being an artist, I often tire of the same medium. I have been wood working since I was 17, making my first gun cabinet then. Made a lot of nice things on the lathe. My very favorite was a 3" dia solid cherry rolling pin for my grandma and it is still being used to this day. Love your work and just subscribed. Keep on, keeping on.
I'm not a wood turner, but I am an artist of another category and I just have to gush about how much I love your work. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos when I'm in an artistic rut, because it makes me use another part of my imagination. It's facinating to watch your pieces emerge from the wood you select and it stimulates creativity in me when I feel drained of ideas. You give a very honest performance and it always makes me happy to see a new video of yours show up on my home page. Please keep up the great work!
hey tim john miller here, great job on the mallee burl!!! done few those myself and yes the payoff is when you can see all those great figures and contrasting colors. Beautifull piece!!!!
Hi Tim, Just saw your video on turning winged burls. To find the balance point for large irregular chunks if you have a reasonably flat surface lay the wood on a dowel or rod. Role the rod back and forth until the wood balances, mark the edges of the blank then draw a straight line on the flat surface. Turn the blank about 90 degrees and repeat the process. Where the lines cross is the center of gravity. Great videos by the way. Love em.
I'm just starting to get into this art form and I wanted to thank you for adding the little bits of instruction as to why you choose one tool or another, and the safety tips. This information is going a long way toward helping novices like myself get started the right way.
I agree. His advice is invaluable. I am a beginner too and just started making videos of my projects to help others avoid the mistakes I made super early on.
Wow Tim you did a fabulous job with that burl! I have almost the same burl from Bad Dog and have been wanting to turn it but have been cautious about turning it. Now I can see the process and thank you. It did look like paw prints on the bottom-just gorgeous!
thanks again for your great wood turning technique and with humor of things you do that also sometimes do. That is what makes us human and I also like the little details about the transitions and how to sand such an uneven shape....
Watched you on TV for a long time Tim, so glad to still find videos on TH-cam! I've got some burl around, I hope to make something like this myself. Thanks for the inspiration! Beautiful work!
This video was so much fun and very interesting and my favorite part was your great personality makes the video more interesting and engaging in comparison to many other great videos in this field so to put it simple I've subdued to your channel and will probably binge watch the rest of your videos
TH-cam suggested me this video and I didn't know what it was by the thumbnail and i've never heard the english word woodturning. So I clicked to learn and I was so surprised about everything but especially your love for the wooed and your precious humor, and I felt the same as watching Chef Ramsay cook, if you do the same you will end up with a mess. It looks so easy. I am a rock climber and we develop a special love for the variety of rocks, colors, stripes, hardness and the feel of it and you expressed that same wonder for your piece of wood. The end result was really beautiful. Subscribed.
Hi Tim, I am so lucky that I live in Australia. Some of these bowls are too big or odd shapes, many times they are too big so I have to route them out, it takes a little longer but they always turn out beautiful just like your bowl. Kind regards Steve Sayers SJS Wood turning Australia
It was a privilege watching this video, at last, someone who actually knows what they are doing, nicely kept workshop and safe working practices, with the minor offence of gripping the edge of the bowl whilst drilling for screw clearance, A thick leather glove would have helped and balance on wood shavings or beanbag, cost in time to make, about half a trip to the hospital. Lovely piece though. Cheers Jeff
What a beauty. I looked at BadDogBurls and that wood at about that size is out of my price range. I'd have to skip a house payment to get one of those. At least I get to see what someone else makes out of such a beautiful burl.
Great project Tim!. Please show the bottom with the oil on it in the beginning of your next show. I am really curious to see how that came out. I will be looking at Bad Dog Burls.
great video. I've made a few of these myself (I'm in Australia and they are easy to get). however, I don't take the rough outside off. I turn a base and then turn the inside. mages for a great, heavy bowl with that rough textured outside. One word of warning, when sanding and polishing be careful. I spent 14 months with a large splinter in my finger that in the end had to be surgically removed after slicing my finger on the sharp edge.
Hi Tim, At times you cannot get our burls on the lathes, what I do is make a flat bottom and route the bowl out the same shape as the burl, then you can keep all the bumps on the bottom which add to the character. Love the video's. Kind regards Steve SJS Wood turning Australia
Finding the center of gravity would be best for placement of initial center hole. To do this, somehow clip a string or fine wire to edge of wood and hang it up. Mark where wire apparently crosses middle of intended bowl as if the wire ran all the way down width of piece. Do this from at least two or three angles around piece. This should indicate the proper placement of center hole...Note: this is the very first use I've ever found of college Physics class. Hope it helps!!
Another great video!!!! Is there anyway you could add the lathe rpm overlay in the future? It would be nice to see what speeds you use for roughing, finishing, and sanding. Keep up the great work.
Man I love your straightforward style Tim, that is an extraordinary piece man. I hope to find some burls like that I can afford!! I'm gonna look an see if you have a video on your hollowing system--I bought one a while ago and have never gotten it out of the box---DOH!! Best regards--Don CarrickDavisDesigns
Contacted Kay at Bad Dog Burls, the business that supplied the Red Mallee that Tim turner in this video. I decided to order a few pieces, and drove down to visit his shop. First let me say that I have never seen so much beautiful wood in one place. He has every kind of burl imaginable, from small stuff to make bottle stoppers, to pieces larger than a small block V8! Best part is, he's a stand-up guy, and his burl wood is affordable. If you have wanted to try turning exotic burls like amboyna, mallee, or any other type of exotic burl, but have been hesitant to spend the high$$$, here is your chance to do so without breaking the bank. Check out his website at www.burlsource.com, and look through his inventory. You will not be disappointed! I left his shop with a box full of red mallee and box elder burls....and I will be going back for more. This is one small business that woodturners want to survive, so check him out.
This bowl is wonderful. I wonder how much a piece like that could sell for? I would sure like to have one. And damn it makes me want to do that myself! I enjoyed watching you work.
Ugh! Only intended to take a quick peek and watch tomorrow... but I was hooked from the start. Learnt a lot about setting up and roughing out a burl. Love your presentation style, very witty & informative. I felt your 😅 pain!!!!! Great protection idea tho. I'll be using that. Woodworkers porn huh!?!?!? Great description. Truly the most stunning piece ive seen. Everywhere you look there was 'more'! You did it proud and showed its natural beauty.

New lathe. All new gouges. Tim got some sponsors for sure. Good to see you back to making shows again.
Hell I like the way you talk, with your hands and vocalizing, don't change ever!
I watched every one of your shows on the local PBS station. But it's been years since I've seen an episode. So this is a special treat. I'll go back and watch them all. Fun.

No shortage of tips, you are quite a character, fun to watch and learn. Thanks from Longford Mills in Canada.

Tim, you seem to enjoy making these videos almost as much as I enjoy watching them.

love your silliness/humor and sometimes dropping stuff, like the rest of us :D

thanks again for your great wood turning technique and with humor of things you do that also sometimes do. That is what makes us human and I also like the little details about the transitions and how to sand such an uneven shape....
Just purchased my first lathe before Christmas, been working on a table/stand, looking forward to learning the craft...
Wow, the bottom of that bowl is amazing!.. Also with your experience and mid-game humor, I have no idea how you aren't more well known Tim!
I have images when I close my eyes ;-) Very nice design and finished piece Tim. Keep turning. Marc
I love your teaching method and safety tips.
You have inspired me to start fooling around with this. Thank you for your great videos! Don't stop!
Watched you on TV for a long time Tim, so glad to still find videos on TH-cam! I've got some burl around, I hope to make something like this myself. Thanks for the inspiration! Beautiful work!

Thank you sharing your experience re: turning a significant burl piece.

The man is back in action! could I request that you make a few Chess pieces?
I carve all of mine by hand and would like to see your work.
gorgeous piece of wood, host is pretty funny too lol. i do think it would maybe have been a bit more functional as a plate though.
"This is a big heavy Thompson tool" Wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard that.

I really Enjoyed this vid remember the Hair factor!

I agree. check out more amazing bowls on my channel and let me know what you think.
JUST AWESOME. What would be the fair market price of the average piece like that?
fantastic. good job
That was great; how was it for you?
I turned a small spalted cherry burl bowl yesterday.
Nice one Tim. Ron
