Joel Hansell here. Phil, it's fantastic!! Thank you so much for such a beautiful design -- I love the high peak of the bowl and your decision to offset the center. The bark and the grain are wonderful. That piece sat in the shop for so long because I couldn't decide on the orientation. You nailed it!! I knew you would do it justice. Thank you, Sir!
No doubt about it Phil you made the right decision. The bowl is very cool looking and one of your best of this style. I love everything you did with it. Lots of fun watching this one. Take care, Gary
Thank You Phil, Thank You Joel Hansell from Georgia....Decisions on which side is up. Do you ever turn one way than think back "gee I wonder what it would have looked like the other way"? You only get one shot at this game Phil & you never know what's going to happen. Very Beautiful Live Edge Bowl Turning, Sanding & Finishing Phil. Total WINNER!!! TM
Oh yeah, I wonder that all the time, Tuffy. As you say, you only get one shot at it. I don't think I ever regret my decision but, we'll never know which might be the best outcome! LOL!
Gorgeous as usual when you turn a piece. I really like your approach to the retention of original features. Your creations are often novel and usually beautiful. I really like your creations!
Wonderfully patterned I love the bowl. Of course I look at others who turn, but to me you are the best artist who takes advantage of what nature has given you. And I like that. Carsten
Beautiful bowl. Lovely. Hubby and I can't see Homer, but we both see a wood sprite or elf. We were laughing because we both saw it. Cheers & Blessings👍
Phil, that burl is really something! It's kind of like finding shapes in clouds, there is so much to see; the figure is amazing. You had quite a dilemma in deciding the design. It's one of those things where there was no bad decision, any of the choices you made would have turned out fantastic. The decision you made turned out great. Thanks also to Joel for providing this wonderful burl.
Well, I thought I saw a dragon until you told me it was Homer. I can see Homer, too. Thanks, Phil! As well as something beautiful, you always give us tips and advice.
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil lovely piece of turning this week and yes I could see Homer. And I loved how you were stroking the bark during the end of the video shows it must have been really smooth to the touch. Thanks Phil.
You alway pull the best possible bowel out of a piece of wood. You have a great eye. And I really like that you almost never use epoxies and you still make it look great. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Beautiful Phil. I saw Homer as well. The piece reminds me of the mouth of a volcano as well. Great video as ever my friend. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw
Hi Phil... Really beautiful bowl and turned very well... I'm not sure that I could have made up my mind which way round to have it... An interesting and enjoyable video as always... and one last thing............DOH !!! ..... Haha... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
What a cool piece. You did the right decision to keep the bark side up, this is what gives the piece character. Especially with the really impressive wood structure in the centre. Well done Phil,
Hi 👋, Phil from Phil, It just amazes me how you can turn a scruffy piece of wood into a lovely piece of art. And Yes that is a mean looking Homer Simpson , Great looking peaceful Phil. And you have been a busy boy laser engraving one day lathe turning the next, I look forward to your next piece of art. PHIL FROM THE QUIET SIDE OF THE MOULIN,
Another beauty, but by now I would expect nothing less. Thanks once more for your time and skill. If I could stand for more than two minutes at a time I'd be trying some of these things on my own lathe. Oh well, this is the road the Lord laid out for me so I try not to complain. Best to you and yours.
Hi Phil. Another wonderful piece due to your imagination and assessment. Your work is truly an inspiration to all who love working with mother natures creations. We need more artists like you to teach and to continue to leave a legacy of honoring this existence we have with Gods wonderful creations. Seeing your videos truly make my day special. Thanks ever so much.
Hi Phil this burl looks nice it's got lots of character and the grain looks awesome the bark is lovely. The live edge bowl is magnificent you must be proud of it? You always make fantastic masterpieces I really love watching your videos. Take carecand keep warm God bless Amanda xx
Simply phantastic, Phil ! It was the right decision to turn it that way. I love your sense of imagination, how you see animals and even Homer hidden in the grain. Cheers form nothern germany ,Stefan
Phil , I have seen you make the right decision on which way you will be turning the wood, many, Many times ! Once again you chose the most Beautiful side ! Plus you also saved Homer's likeness ! Take Care and Be Safe
Nice Phil!! I didn't think that gnarly bark would work out that well. Who knew? I just brought home some chestnut from a tree that fell during a recent storm and it has a very similar chunky bark. Seeing what you did with that burl has given me again a different perspective on what's possible! Thank you. Cheers, Rick
I may have been tempted to just make slices of this on the band saw and use them for wall art or centerpieces for hot items on the dinner table. Good job working this out.
Phil, if it would have been me, I probably would have done it in the opposite orientation (do what you see versus what you don’t see). That would have been a mistake. You are able to to use your X - ray vision and bring out the beauty in most of your pieces. You are truly an amazing master wood turner.
That is beautiful! It's a tough decision how to turn a piece like this. I'm glad it was not up to me! I always learn something new watching your videos. They inspire me what can be done with an unusual shape of wood and give me encouragement to try it myself. I'm often surprised (amazed even) how well these can turn out, even for a novice like myself. Thanks!
Another lovely piece Phil. Hope you're well young man. I think I could see Hell boy same part as you saw Homer but I couldn't see him. Well done sir keep em coming.
Beautiful, Phil! The orientation you chose was the right one, for sure. So enjoy hearing you talk through the options the wood offers and your rationale for the one you choose. Always educational. Thanks!
Joel Hansell here. Phil, it's fantastic!! Thank you so much for such a beautiful design -- I love the high peak of the bowl and your decision to offset the center. It was a tough decision, Joel. It would have been great either way, I think, but I am happy with the outcome. Thanks again for sending it along! 😊

I really like your approach to what you preserve of the unusual features of the original piece. They're certainly gorgeous.
Glad you like them, thank you! 😀
Phil you can always take a chunk of wood and make something nice and beautiful out of it.
Thank you, Ronnie! 😊
No doubt about it Phil you made the right decision. The bowl is very cool looking and one of your best of this style. I love everything you did with it.
Lots of fun watching this one.
Take care,
Gary
Thank you, Gary! We need to have a conversation some time about why the softer wood is so difficult to turn compared to the harder heartwood. 😊
Beautiful piece Phil. That Homer would certainly scare the kids! Love it.
BOO! 😊
Phil, that is so gorgeous...you made the right decision! I'm like you...I love the imperfections that create character in our turnings!
Yay, great minds, Carol! 😊

Wen you are showing the bottom with the video action bar at 23:01, it looks like big foot. Nice work Phil.
Haha, I see what you mean, Bill!😀
Gorgeous as usual when you turn a piece. I really like your approach to the retention of original features. Your creations are often novel and usually beautiful. I really like your creations!

With M&M's you always have a winner, Duane! 😊
Yes, you just took A piece of fire pit wood and made a work of art.
Thanks for explaining and the tools used in your process.
Thank you very much! 😊
I've heard of dough bowls, but this is the first "D'oh Bowl" I've seen. Great work, again.

You inspire me! Can’t wait to turn some wonky pieces.
On with the wonky, Ken! 😊

You are able to to use your X - ray vision and bring out the beauty in most of your pieces. You are truly an amazing master wood turner.
I wanted to, so bad, Doug! But, truth is, I think it would have looked good either way. 😊
Cool bowl Phil! When you first flipped the wood over it looked like an anatomical heart to me.
