    Great video, I am heading in a similar direction with my 94 SR. I like the shop footage combined with the hoopty in action!

    In short, front third member from a sport without the axle disconnect junk, front TRE locker and factory rear locker, someone is trading me a 3rd gen SWB 3 door 97 pajero for my JDM JB23 Jimny and wanted to learn more about it. The low range gearing sounds like a really good investment, I had a 97 SR and wished for a lower low range with 32s. Thanks for all the info.

    Hi from Australia..
    We call it a Pajero.. I have two of them.. both 3.5 dohc witch are delivered here factory spec with a 40 mm body lift...
    But air locking rear is very hard to find.... After market=.arb.
    Yes transfer gears are easy to get here...
    Were a very popular rig here
    Caravans loved them
    I'll be putting mine on the road as purely a off road rig
    Can't beat up my new Isuzu mux.. and the Nissan patrol GQ is getting very expensive here..
    Did not know about the Pajero Sport diff gear swap..
    Sweet... Yee yee

    Really well done, as usual. I went a step beyond with my 95 SR and obtained 5.29 gears (through Hyundai). On an SR with 35" tires, that makes the speedo and shift points spot-on, but you have to use a 9" set-up in back. I haven't done the transfer case gearing yet, but I do have an ARB air locker in the front and the big ARB compressor I mounted inside, in the back. Fun fact: Gen 2.5 Monteros with the ten disc changer will perfectly mount that compressor in the bracket made for the changer, just remove the changer and bolt up the compressor. Wobbles a little but the bracket is quite strong.
    One thing to potentially watch for is the mating flange between the rear driveshaft and the third member. If you want to be safe, snag the driveshaft out of the donor vehicle as well. Take care!

    hi grate video , its grate knolege, i have a 98 sr with air locker in the back how hard is it to put the lock in the front i want to run 33s for tiers and to put the locker in front.

    • @montanamontero
      @montanamontero  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the locker install isn't all too difficult. you need to take down the diff, which can be a pain. but installation is pretty simple. it uses a shim pack to set the backlash, so if you are not familiar with how to set those up it can be a pain

  • @macdrew77
    @macdrew77 ปีที่แล้ว

    What happened to your front diff? I'm getting some metal paste in the oil after my 4.9 R&P swap (1,000mi in). I'll have to keep an eye on it but I feel like I'm going to have to pull it back out eventually.

    • @montanamontero
      @montanamontero  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually had a roller bearing crack in half on me. Super weird failure in the casting. It was making a little more noise than I thought it should so I pulled it. Also my backlash was at .024” instead of .004”-.007”.. so I reset it. I think I got lucky and saved it just in time!

    I just bought a tre air locker for the front of mine. Does the air supply and return have to be at the 12:00 position on the diff? I am trying to do it without dropping the whole axle assembly. And I can't drill the top but I could probably drill the 10:00 position at a angle.

    • @montanamontero
      @montanamontero  ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t have to be at 12.. however I think the return is just a drain for the oil that sometimes gets pushed around.. so I think it has to be at an angle that it can drain by gravity. Also, it’s barely any more work to pull the diff once you get everything else pulled off to get the carrier out. So I recommend just pulling it.

    Glenn from Florida here. I too have a 98 gen 2.5 with the winter package and rear locker. I also want to switch to 4.9s…. Which montero sport is best again? That comes with awd and 4.9s… ? Please let me know. And what else to modify for an easier swap. Thank you

    • @montanamontero
      @montanamontero  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Any 12 bolt rear diff should have the 9.5” diff you need. The front will match. I went with the AWD model because I wanted to eliminate the selectable front

      I thought about making videos of the process. I set up the rear diff myself, much easier to do. But for the front diffs I paid someone to do them. I tried my hand at it and didn’t enjoy the process and I wasn’t good at it haha

      @@montanamontero i can do the changing out but going in the diff and puting shims and setting all that up i dont know i have a general idea, but other than that nop, would be nice to have the 98 sr fully locked and with the 4,9 in, but ill takle the valve seals first and general tune up , what ta make it reliable to go out to the midel of nowhere, but need to make shore i dont get stranded do to motor problem..

    I have a 1998 Gen 2.5 with the factory rear locker, any advise if I wanted to upgrade to the 4.9 gears. Would it be just like yours ?

    • @montanamontero
      @montanamontero  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yours has the 4.3 gears from the factory so the 4.9 sway will be even more beneficial. the front will just bolt in mostly (you will need to enlarge the holes for the passenger side CV axle to bolt up since the sports and full sized use slightly different patterns.) but the rear is going to need some gear work. you basically have to pull the gears out of the sport diff, and install them into the gen 2.5 housing. if you haven't ever worked with gears, best to hire a shop to do it

      Would it be easier to find the 4.63 gears from your Montero and swap them in since I doubt I would go anything bigger than 33’s or would the benefits barely be there?

    • @montanamontero
      @montanamontero  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it would be harder to find, but for sure easier to install. And if you are sticking with 33”s it might be ok.
