Hey Elizabeth! I am a guitar player, NOT latin, but Soda has been one of my favorite bands for over thirty years and Cerati is one of my guitar gods. When I heard of his stroke and eventual passing it was devastating. Anyway, as for his sound here, I can tell you that he is playing a Paul Reed Smith guitar through (mainly) a Vox AC30 amp (at least that's how he recorded this song). He has it set to overdrive enough so that, when he really strums hard, the signal distorts, but upon a lighter touch it remains bell-like and tingly. For the solo there, he's using (or WAS using in studio) an Eventide H-3000 harmonizer, which was super cool and trendy back in the late 80's. It is adding harmonic elements as he plays. Also, the nature of the solo is that he is pulling notes off onto open strings, so it sounds like cascading notes at times. He was a magician and beautiful songwriter and the world lost an amazing voice in him 15 years ago. RIP Gustavo...

I just discovered this band about a month ago-I'm 65 and was a professional musician through most of the 80s and 90s, which is when this music was actually made-and I've been listening to Soda Stereo NON-STOP, every single day of those thirty.
I'm kind of surprised that you picked this particular song out of their entire catalogue; while it's a great song, it does not come close to showing Cerati's incredible four-octave vocal range, which blew me away, as did his capacity for staying on the pitch throughout (actually, in this performance I heard a couple of rare flats) because, well, playing guitar, remembering the words and jumping around are not exactly conducive to staying pitch perfect.
But there are simply so many of Soda Stereo's live songs-see their "Gira Me Veras Volver" tour series, all on TH-cam-where my jaw just dropped and I had to rewind time and again to say "Did that just happen? Did he really hit those notes?" because they were truly superhuman.
Later on tonight, on my daily "Soda Stereo Tour" where all I do is listen to them, I'll try to note down the songs that I'm referring to.
I swear, I cried when I found out he had lingered in a coma for FOUR YEARS before he died, and *all before I had ever heard of them.*
    ***LATER***
Okay, I found the song I was thinking of where he shows us his incredible vocal range. It's called "Cuando Pase El Temblor" and it's live and I've copied the link to it that starts the section where he blew me away (you owe it to yourself to listen to the whole thing but for now the link is at th-cam.com/video/eqXHckx7zls/w-d-xo.html
But the ultimate showcase of Gustavo Cerati's voice-plus, in my opinion the second-best song they ever wrote is "En La Ciudad De La Furia," and it's at th-cam.com/video/VoGwvVoaoCw/w-d-xo.html.

You are great and many thanks to you for this kindgard words. Soda Stereo and Gustavo Cerati itself (in his solo carrer) is like an adiction, one day you know them you can't stop of listening. Soda is very important to Argentinians and the most iconic band in Latin America (and also of Rock in Spanish or Rock en Español). I recommend you to listen the songs "Genesis" and "Ella uso mi cabeza como un revolver" from their MTV Music presentation Confort y Musica para Volar, "Estoy azulado", "En la ciudad de la furia" (Los Angeles, USA, 1989). Also, try the Velez Sarsfield concert in Buenos Aires from 1990. The English band Coldplay versioned "De musica ligera" song too.
Blessings to you and welcome to Soda and Gustav o music world !!!!!

@@mharg6408 Yes, I must say that even though I don't understand the lyrics, except when I see a translation, the music and Gustavo Cerati's voice alone are enough to make me want to listen again and again like I have just discovered a new Beatles. When I began to read about Soda Stereo I was shocked that Gustavo had died almost ten years ago and that I had never heard a note of his music, that he would never make again, and I cried,
His songs, especially Candy Pase El Temblor, hold a melancholy that shines through, and even on first listening to it I cried. No other music has ever done this to me.
But he lives on in TH-cam (and also a Netflix series about rock in Latin America called "Break It All" in which all the most famous names of Latin rock look at Gustavo as almost a god.

Sadly I never got to see Soda, but every single show I went to in BA was electrifying. Really the best. Great choice for analysis. I am an American living in Mexico and recall the first time hearing Soda Stereo. It was a song called Disco Eterno which has a catchy guitar lick. It was in a downtown Tijuana bar when on the jukebox the song came on. I'm in my 60's, so I turn to the kids who played the song and I asked, "Who is this?. They explained Soda Stereo to me and they told me their favorite songs by them. I really have to say, I think Gustavo was an absolute musical genius and passed way too soon. My favorite song now by them is Hombre Al Agua, a must listen to song of Soda Stereo...hopefully you can analyze that one in the future.

The irony behind this song is that the lyrics are about someone who aims to write a legendary song, a song that is regarded as light, and loved by people, and regarded as a classic. It was inspired by certain tracks of this kind Cerati used to listen. The song is described as a woman in the lyrics. This is what wikipedia says:
"In the first two verses, Cerati sings "ella durmió al calor de las masas, y yo desperté queriendo soñarla" (she slept to the heat of the masses, and I woke up wanting to dream about her). The expression is both beautiful and complex: it expresses a clash of states that are worlds apart (sleep and wakefulness), but also the desire to dream of that which has awakened him, to be reunited with her in his own dream. It also expresses her unconsciousness, lulled by the effect of the masses, faced with his lucidity, he cannot help waking up and seeing things as they really are.
Then he sings "algún tiempo atrás pensé en escribirle" (some time ago I thought about writing to her) but mysteriously informs us that he could not overcome "las trampas del amor" (the traps of love). The lyrics then conclude telling everyone that he will not send "cenizas de rosas" (ashes of roses), and "ni pienso evitar un roce secreto" (nor he will avoid a secret touch), confirming the duality that awakens "aquel amor de música ligera" (that easy-listening-music love)."
De Música Ligera in itself ended up becoming exactly that. This catchy, fresh, light legendary classic.

    • @guillermopelaez5859
      @guillermopelaez5859 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Interesting analysis... In my not qualified opinion, the lyrics plays with the duality of the song you mentioned and a "summer love" as referred in Argentinean Spanish, a "light music love" (a love that flourish during a summer holiday and then just fade in time, coming back as just a distant memory randomly remembered years down the road)... That is "nada nos libra" (but) "nada más queda"... we all had it, and we all have lost it....

Personally, I see it as a emotional hangover.
"She slept , warmed by the masses
And I woke up, wanting to dream her"
The protagonist realizes that she was better in dreams that in reality.
"Some time ago, I thought about writing to her,
That I never evaded the traps of love"
Now I believe he regrets falling for the trap, which he finally did in spite of thinking once he never would.
      "From that smooth music love,
      Nothing frees us,
      Nothing else remains"
It depicts some sort of torment: He can't forget the moment but can't help accepting it is gone.
"I won't send her ashes of roses,
      Nor avoid a secret touch"
He insists: Doesn't make sense to grieve the loss of love or to blame it on her, but he will console himself with (what it seems) a jerkoff.
      Then the chorus again.
This song cries of hurt in spite of sounding like a cheerful anthem

As others mentioned, this particular performance you reacted to happens to be the very last song of their very “last” concert of their break up tour. They were saying goodbye. At the end he basically gives a speech of gratitude for the 14 yrs of love and support & finishes of with the immortal words “Gracias Totales!”.
This song, un ironically is their most commercial song. The lyrics allude to the state of the rock/music industry & how commercialized it had become.

Hi Elizabeth, I was looking for someone who had explained to you the guitar sound but I did not see anyone. Gustavo was very much into ethereal and clean sounds, delays, choruses, flangers, reverbs and he would mix his sound to give the song an identity sort of speak. Every song they had, had a different guitar sound that would immediately give away the song. Not only he was skilled in his taste for sounds, he also was a guitar extraordinaire. Their dynamics and textures like you said were amazing for a trio, they not only did it well, they had so much fun with it it was contagious. I hope this small contribution can help. I recommend you to do "Profugos". Amazing delay work.

Last words of the concert that still we all remember:
"No sólo no hubiéramos sido nada sin ustedes, sino con toda la gente que estuvo a nuestro alrededor desde el comienzo. Algunos siguen hasta hoy… ¡Gracias totales!"
Thanking the people at the concert and all the followers who supported them from the beginning, those last 2 words: "Gracias totales" were epic, considering he said something like "Totally thank you" instead of "Muchas gracias" ("Thank you very much" ). The way he said it, with the pause after "Gracias..." and before "...totales" was immortalized in our hearts.

Thanks for this video, I wish you'd had more context to this song in this concert, it was the band's thanks and farewell before splitting as a homage to their fans, this was meant to be their last live performance. And the song is a classic anthem.
As Latin artists go you'd have a good time listening to Shakira, I'd encourage you to check out her earlier work Ojos así (song) has some great vocals but all through Pies descalzos and Dónde están los ladrones (both early albums) you'll find awesome vocalising. Thanks for your great work 🙏🏼

What makes this video somehow emotive is the fact that the song is the last from a big concert that last more than 2 hours, and the album in which this tracks comes in is called "El Último Concierto" which translates as "The Last Concert". It was a way of saying there will be no more Soda Stereo anymore :'( That last speech from Gustavo Cerati says something like: "Not only would we have been nothing without you, but with all the people who were around us from the beginning. Some of you continue to this day! Thank you... total!" (I don't know how to translate that very last expression, but it is now a very famous phrase which people uses to remember Cerati: "Gracias... totales!")

    • @GrigoryTingus
      @GrigoryTingus ปีที่แล้ว +2
