I'm a 34 year old woman that is going to change her very first pulley because of this video! I'm tired of asking my boyfriend or Dad to drop what they're doing to fix my shit. Now armed with your video, I GOT THIS! lol Thank you!
I love the way you make these easy to understand, and very good filming and clarity. I'm not a mechanic do-it-yourselfer, yet I watch your videos regularly. I hope more people like me find these videos and arm themselves before going in for repairs. Thanks for saving me thousands!
This video is so awesome! I was able to replace the pulley just like in the video. I'm in awe that I was able to do this job by myself. Even after I fixed it, I'm driving around in disbelief that I fixed it myself. And the best part? I marvel at the amount of money and time I saved by not going to the mechanic.
One year ago if you would have asked me how to change oil I couldn't tell you. After watching Chris's videos I am able to do my own auto repair not only for me but my family, thank you Chris!
thought I was under warranty for the idler pulley, but the dealership quoted me at $350 before tax to replace it. I walked away, and feel great that this video exists. Thanks!

Not only the volumes of knowledge, but also your teaching methods, personality, funny voice and etc. And it’s cool that you don’t show your face ever, at least to my knowledge lol. It's important to keep in mind some of these pulleys are secured using a reverse thread bolt. Make sure before attempting this or you could have a big problem.
@@187th That sucks. Several good videos on here of people using a 90° angle drill attachment to drill the broken bolt and then successfully use an extractor to remove it. Also Project Farm has a good video on which extractors work best. Just be 100% sure that bolt is indeed reverse thread and didn't just break due to being stuck in there.
joel maldonado Yes, the washer that I put back on the tensioner pulley bolt is needed. It holds the pulley in against the bearing properly when you tighten it down.
If you have a simple welder, you might try tack welding a bolt head onto it. Then use a socket to take it off and replace the nut. That is simple (if you have a welder). Im guessing you cant get a drill in there and just drill the bolt out?
This video came in in a clutch. I was on my way home when I heard a noise in my engine compartment and my car died. Well, I was on the road. So, I quickly went into the nearest car park to see what was going on. The idler pulley had shattered around the ball bearings, causing the serpentine belt to slip and get shredded. Fortunately, there was an O'Reilly across the street. I got the ruined pieces off and took them over and got a sales associate to identified the parts and get me replacements. It cost me $90 total for the new parts. But, when I take into consideration towing costs and paying a mechanic to repair it, I realize I just saved myself some $300-$400. The best part is this was my first time to work in any car around the serpentine belt area and I managed to successfully install the new parts. I only needed the video to figure out where the tension pulley was located and how to manipulate it.
Thanks! That is such a great complement! I like Ericthecarguy's stuff and to be compared to him is great! I might do a timing belt change relatively soon. I am working on a compression test first!
Easy, cheap fix indeed but what I have found is that its just as easy to buy the bearings in bulk, 10 to a package in my case, and when I have one starting to make noise I pull that pulley off the auto and then using a vise and a few choice sockets push out the old bearing and replace it, installation is by reverse order of course. Total cost for this same repair as you just did was $1.29 for that bearing. I have many Ford trucks, autos and nicely enough they all use the same bearing in just about everything including the alternators front bearing. I only replace the bearings on steel pulleys, not the plastic ones which I throw away now. I Only mention this as are people enjoy doing their own repairs to save money. Nice video too. Thanks. I bought the bulk bearings through Amazon.

Good video. I went really cheap and just replaced the bearing. $7.99 at my local farm supply house. (Agri Supply) The idler pulley bearing on my honda cr-v is commonly used on riding mowers (6203).
Chris - thanks for the videos! I have replaced the headlight motor gear on my C4 and repaired the AC system electronic head system both thanks to your videos. Next I will attempt to replace the tensioner pully on my 07 Tundra. Thanks for everything.
The old pulley that ChrisFix replaces in the video is worn smooth, while the new one has a fresh black coating on it. If you only replace the bearing, would you have a problem with the pulley tread being worn like that?
@@TheJayDawg21no sir, the pulley should look like that when it is used. It is not worn-----just the paint from the factory wore out and that should not affect the function of the pulley.
Excellent quality Japan made bearing costs around $5. Do not get the cheap Chinese made for a buck and it will last you for only a year instead of 10 years. That bearing will turn a billion times....
Thanks Chris Fix, good video. My tension er was backward to your fix, I had to put a 3/8" wratchet (without a socket) in to a square opening to pull on to loosen the belt. This was on my wife's 2004 Pontiac Montana, hope this tip can help somebody also. The pulley I bought was a complete unit (pulley-bolt-dust shield). Thank again keep up the good work Chris. I'm her knight in shining armor once again. lol😊
+Raul Perez, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason so I hope you see this. It sounds like the belt was way too tight. Maybe it is the wrong belt, did you compare the size of the new and old. The new belt should be pretty much the same size (maybe slightly larger because it isnt stretched out). The other thing is you could have routed it incorrectly. I would check those two things and let me know if you find anything.
I have a '96 Saturn Wagon SOHC, and I thought my problem was a power steering pump or maybe even the chain, until I saw this, I went out to the garage, poked the pully and it wobbled, the dealership told me (and the previous owners" "that is just a normal noise the 1.9 makes" Never trust the dealership. Thank you Chris!
So there was play in the idler pulley and it wobbles because of the bad bearings inside it? is that the usual reason pulleys go bad? because of their bearings?
Great video. Everything you need to know, and nothing you don't. Clear video shots of what we need to see. I can't think of a better way to make a "how to" video.
Kiran Panchal It depends what the problem is. Check out this video which explains how to find where the squeak is coming from. th-cam.com/video/AEUe6uKxTv8/w-d-xo.html
I done that but did not work spray V belt did not work make the sound go worse also tried wd40 and a little bar of soap but that didn't help either if it's the tension bearing then i replace that if not i'll replacethe belt. anyway
If it made the noise worse when spraying the belt, you have a belt tension issue. That can be the belt is stretched or that the tensioner spring is worn out and needs replacing.
Cheers for that um i didn't know i'm trying to get a drawing as well how to get it out obviously i checked on youtube and other places but no one's doing any video on the vauxhall corsa 2004 model c cdti
great vid. u forgot to mention that u should disconnect the negative battery cable (on most cars where the negative is the ground cable. i think there r much older vehicles where the positive cable is the ground tho rare.) do this cuz sometimes the radiator fans can come on even tho the car is not running.
AWESOME! Can't wait to fix my squeak tomorrow! It can definitely be embarrassing driving on the freeway and the squeaks gets really loud. HUGE thank you for this video.
ChrisFix It's been 24 hours since I change out the Idler Pulley how you describe. No More Squeaks! The squeaking used to get really bad when I would drive with the AC on, but not anymore! Thanks!
Great video man, clear and concise with all needed and relevant information, its people like you that make youtube an actual tool, and not just a shitshow
+Billy Madoo - Sure you can, wanna SAVE more $$$... You can get the Bearing for like $4.00 (Included Shipping)... Buy more.. If you buy 10? It's like $1.29 each including Shipping. All you need is to Press it in... I will make a Video next week for it :D
You are definitely the go to guy! I have watched nearly all of ur videos! I've had to work on my own cars over the years. Any time my dad or sisters car has problems guess who they call first? Now that I'm older and had both hands operated on it's not as easy , so i have recently had to take to a garage. Being a female, they think Idk what I'm talking about when I've pointed out the problem, which really irritates me!
You know, I'm coming to this video accidentally. I didn't know you had did this. But your video editing is a lot better in your 2019 videos. Which makes sense, good to see you grow that way. (Here because the Haynes manual has failed me once again in regards to my ranger)
Very helpful video, love it step by step. Seems so inexpensive. I have a 2007 R350 Benz and my belt was sounding just like that but loud. The mechanic charged me $413 to replace the pulley and the belt. What a rip off.
Chris, this is fantastic. I've watched the spray bottle diagnostic test video and both the idler pulley and belt tensioner pulley videos. I have this issue in my wife's car and despite not even testing out what the issue is, I am already confident I can not only determine the source but also resolve. Thanks a lot!
Great! Glad the videos are helpful and I hope you find your problem! Let me know what you find! Also if you havent already, give the videos a thumbs up (it helps me out, thanks!)
Chris, I have successfully repaired my idler pulley for "$0". Remove the pulley and place it on a bench. Using a hyperemic syringe press the needle along the inner edge of the bearing seal at an angle until the tip of the needle is below the seal. I used Marvel Oil, slowly being the keyword inject the lube in several places. I did this on both sides in several spots so to saturate the bearings. Re-installed 5 minutes later . . . and noise gone. Not sure at this time how long it may last but if the noise does return I will inject a heavier weight lubricant, maybe 90#.
rodney brown Neat! That is a good idea for bearings that just need some oil. If you catch the noise fast enough, you probably dont have a damaged bearing yet. In my case, the bearing was wobbly indicating it was bad. That is a good idea though. Keep me posted on how long it lasts!
my s10 squeaked, it was a bad rear alternator bearing, the clueless at Delco didnt cover the rear bearing so water got in it and damaged the bearing and rear commutator ring. " Its a sealed bearing so you dont have to worry about anything' WRONG. These bearings are sealed, but need to be shielded also. Water enters thru the seals... So, also spin the other pullies ( alternator, water pump, AC comp, PS) and listen for noise.
I found that on a 2008 mustang it is to remove belt off the alternator and idler pulley remove idler pulley. Me and my aunt used a 24 in in length And 1/2 breaker bar with a 3/8 adapter to break it lose and watched multiple videos and developed confidence. If your scared to move the serpentine belt just practice putting it on and off or you might forget how to put the belt on just draw a diagram or take a picture or whatever helps or your owners manual usually has the belt diagram. Longer the breaker bar the easier it is to move the auto-tensioner. It should take 30 mins tops or more if you got the wrong part like I did. I had to bend the little metal pointy things on the washer to take off the washer then compress the metal pointy things on when the washer is on the bolt. I didnt follow torque spec but i used breaker bar to tighten it until i heard a click which i think it indicates it might break the bolt if torqued anymore. Then put belt under idler pulley, of course using breaker bar too do that then over the alternator. Put the engine filter assemblies back together and done and no squealing.
I just did this for my jeep today, the idler pulley started making a chirp/high whining noise, so I wasnt able to use a belt tension-er so I forced it on lol. my belt runs under the pulley so I used the pulley to push down while getting the bolt on and bam worked perfectly and easy. thanks for the vid!
Thanks man! I am waiting for you to make something about steering boxes? mine is leaking a little bit not major but that's something I may want to take on this summer :)
I had to order mine on line that’s the best tool . Unfortunately the store here don’t have them any more . Amazon for 20$ works great . Good tool to have .
$20. My mechanic said hundreds and I should sell it as soon as possible. since I didn’t like my 2008 accord v4 I sold it. Didn’t want to waste more money on it but also didn’t like the v4. Thank you for the video I will know on my next car.
Thanks for posting the vids on the belt issues. Greatly appreciative of this. I've never been really good at working on cars, but this and some other clips I've seen on your channel really break it down and makes it easy to understand. Your'e saving me labor costs! Cheers to you my friend!
Excellent! Im glad the videos are helping you out! That is my goal! I try to make videos that anyone can follow. Even people with basic tools and know-how can follow along and fix their car!
I recently bought a 1999 ranger xlt with the 3.0 It has 199000 miles and I ran into the same problem with the idler pulley squeaking, So I removed it it is the original, I cleaned the bearing removed the seal on both sides and repack it with high temp grease, put it back on and is nice and quiet. I have a replacement on order but we'll see how long this fix last. I thought I share this mod as a temporary fix while waiting for a replacement. I will be doing the tensioner pulley next. Cheers..
Hi Chris: Thanks for your video. I don't particularly watch car repair videos but I recently moved to NC and had to go to have my truck (2006 Chevy Trailblazer 6 Cyl 4.2L) checked out and didn't have any referral yet to a good honest mechanic so I picked one based on Google reviews and locality. He checked it out and the following is the exact verbage on my estimate for repair "Remove & Replace-Drive Belt Remove & Replace Serpentine Belt Idler Pulley-Remove & Replace Serpentine Belt" - The cost is as follows: Labor-$154 & $210.85 parts for a total job cost of $364.92! What I just saw you do and the low cost of the pulley (I understand maybe varied cost depending on car) that estimate seems insane to me! I'm suppose to get it done Monday so if you can give me some insight on your thoughts I would appreciate it so much! Thanks, Susan :)
Each belt is around $15 each. The Idler pulley is around $50. Most garages charge 1 hr labor plus the actual time it takes to do the labor. An amateur can replace both belts and Idler pulley in an hour. My opinion the labor is close.. but the parts are WAY off. Parts total shouldn't cost more than $100. Call your nearest auto parts store and ask for an estimate on both belts and Idler pulley.
Susan D Robert pretty much nailed it. You can totally do this yourself no problem and for a lot cheaper. It is worth it and you will learn a lot! Let me know if you have any questions and thanks *****
Hi . You are doing great job by videoing every repair you do in any car, You did give me the confidence to change the break on my Tacoma, thank you very much. If you can, would you please put more video on Tacoma. Thanks.
This video helped thank you. My 07 Ram 1500 had the same issue just a slight wobble in the pulley. Instead of replacing like I should've I just torqued it back to factory specs. I had to get going, it seem to silence the wobbling noise. Will probably need to be replaced down the road.
I know very little in mechanic but I was wondering how do you know when you've put the right amount of torq on the bolt when you use a simple ratchet? Thanks for taking the time to show us the steps, I appreciate it (y)! All the best on your projects
Excellent video. However, I need both my upper and lower idler pulleys replaced, as well as the diagnostic belt. Do you have videos on how to replace both idler pulleys as well as the diagnostic belt? Thank you.

You deserve a gold award, you’re great! Thank you
Chris - thanks for the videos! I have replaced the headlight motor gear on my C4 and repaired the AC system electronic head system both thanks to your videos. Next I will attempt to replace the tensioner pully on my 07 Tundra. Thanks for everything.
👍 How's the Tundra@ Used.which year would you recommend?
I would disconnect the negative terminal from the battery to ensure that fan will not come on. Could on a hot engine.
Good comment, safety always, maybe his car was cold but still.
Mine just started to squeak too.

If you wan't to save even more money, you can just press in a new bearing. Cost is around $5 for a new bearing.
Yup A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The old pulley that ChrisFix replaces in the video is worn smooth, while the new one has a fresh black coating on it. If you only replace the bearing, would you have a problem with the pulley tread being worn like that?
Ya I'm just going to get bearings
@@TheJayDawg21no sir, the pulley should look like that when it is used. It is not worn-----just the paint from the factory wore out and that should not affect the function of the pulley.
Excellent quality Japan made bearing costs around $5. Do not get the cheap Chinese made for a buck and it will last you for only a year instead of 10 years. That bearing will turn a billion times....
glad you dont talk sooo much blah, and just get to it , well done bro
4:08 chris did you leave the socket on the pulley?
Totaly did and started the truck with it on!
MylesHaag That’s how you lose 10mm sockets!!!!! Haha
Eagle -eye.
LMAO.
I'm her knight in shining armor once again. lol😊
Once again Chris, you've definitely helped me solve a issue I've had. Thanks man 👍
Out of town and my belt ripped and idler pulley went bad and this video along with another one helped me replace it thank you
+Raul Perez, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason so I hope you see this.
ChrisFix steering stopped working for a moment.
+James Whyte Correct.
Great video. Everything you need to know, and nothing you don't. Clear video shots of what we need to see. I can't think of a better way to make a "how to" video.
Is always you have change both of the items or just the Belt or the Tensioner also what about just changing the Tensioner
bearing instead.
Kiran Panchal Haha no problem!
Many thanks for this vid. I had no idea it was so easy. Took me about 10 minutes total, to do this to my 2000 Pontiac Montana. Cheers
m3dbs Yea, it really isnt bad! Glad the video was helpful!
great vid. u forgot to mention that u should disconnect the negative battery cable (on most cars where the negative is the ground cable. i think there r much older vehicles where the positive cable is the ground tho rare.) do this cuz sometimes the radiator fans can come on even tho the car is not running.
mjt11860 There is no need to remove the negative terminal on this vehicle because the fan runs off the engine, not off an electric motor.
ChrisFix that may b true on this vehicle, but on other vehicles it may not b the case. better safe than sorry.
mjt11860 Thanks for the tip!
ChrisFix no problem.
My car has the SAME exact noise...this channel is really a great help
Awesome! Make sure you watch this: th-cam.com/video/AEUe6uKxTv8/w-d-xo.html
damn i need a pulley tensioner bar
dsouzand You can just use a long ratchet.
or a long breaker bar.
Harbor freight cheap af!
Thanks Chris for the "step by step" guide, this helped me to isolate my "noisy" idler.
how the hell I just heard my pulley making squeaking noise 2 hours ago, and youtube suggest me this video...
:o
Your phone is spying on you.

AWESOME! Can't wait to fix my squeak tomorrow! It can definitely be embarrassing driving on the freeway and the squeaks gets really loud.
HUGE thank you for this video.
hersh23 No problem! Hopefully it works for you!
ChrisFix It's been 24 hours since I change out the Idler Pulley how you describe. No More Squeaks! The squeaking used to get really bad when I would drive with the AC on, but not anymore! Thanks!
hersh23 WOOOOO! Nice!
To inform my knowledge
nasser hamayun I am glad you learned something new!
Great video man, clear and concise with all needed and relevant information, its people like you that make youtube an actual tool, and not just a shitshow
looks like my skateboard bearing
mickey mouse s10's nothin but a pile of crap but there cheap to fix
As usual, straight to the point and clear. BTW, I have pulled apart 3 motors and still cannot find any with piston springs. Gonna keep lookin'. lol
can't u like just change the bearing and not the pulley
+Billy Madoo - Sure you can, wanna SAVE more $$$... You can get the Bearing for like $4.00 (Included Shipping)... Buy more.. If you buy 10? It's like $1.29 each including Shipping. All you need is to Press it in... I will make a Video next week for it :D
The bearing is #6203 and it's on ebay for $2 free ship.
I had to buy 2 for $4.00 so yea, they are $2.00 each. You can see the Video I made here... TH-cam Search: IxzIXnMAz4s
I broke my fingers searching for that Squeak! Solid advice about keeping hands away. I got my fingers caught up in it.
Thanks for the video on this &
with the right tools as shown in your video, this lady 👩 right here saved herself a few dollars 💵 Thankyou!
I hope this guy is getting rich from these videos because he's already saved me a lot of money.
Thanks Chris, I fixed my problem using the water technique shown in this video. Really helpful recommending a better belt.
Damn it's 5am and I'm ready to bust my car down and start fixing lol...you the best....
I am a newbie of car fixing at Hong Kong, I am addicting from yr video, I will try hard to diy on my car.
You know, I'm coming to this video accidentally. I didn't know you had did this. But your video editing is
a lot better in your 2019 videos. Which makes sense, good to see you grow that way. (Here because the Haynes manual has failed me once again in regards to my ranger)
simple and i will at 66 years of age change myself! will post after i complete this task!
Very helpful video, love it step by step. Seems so inexpensive. I have a 2007 R350 Benz and my belt was sounding just like that but loud. The mechanic charged me $413 to replace the pulley and the belt. What a rip off.
+Retiredatlast Yea it is really simple and easy in most cars!
Thank you for the clear instructions. You’re such a great teacher.
Hey ChrisFix,you should have one nice garage you deserved it because your videos are not boring, keep it up man just like that!
my s10 squeaked, it was a bad rear alternator bearing, the clueless at Delco didnt cover the rear bearing so water got in it and damaged the bearing and rear commutator ring.
" Its a sealed bearing so you dont have to worry about anything'
WRONG.
These bearings are sealed, but need to be shielded also. Water enters thru the seals...
So, also spin the other pullies ( alternator, water pump, AC comp, PS) and listen for noise.
PS do not leave the belt in place, remove it and check for cracks and CLEAN THE PULLEYS. Dirt and oil on the pulleys is bad...
Yes I could! Give me a few weeks and I will work on it!
I just did this for my jeep today, the idler pulley started making a chirp/high whining noise, so I wasnt able to use a belt tension-er so I forced it on lol. my belt runs under the pulley so I used the pulley to push down while getting the bolt on and bam worked perfectly and easy. thanks for the vid!
cent dp Awesome! Glad the video was helpful and you got the job done yourself! Nice work!
Thanks man! I am waiting for you to make something about steering boxes? mine is leaking a little bit not major but that's something I may want to take on this summer :)
cent dp Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely make a video if I have a problem with the steering box.
All your videos are very helpful for the DIY mechanics.
Great work on narrating, creating, and editing the video. Very efficient.
Thanks!
The idler center bolt, is it standard threading (righty tightly, lefty loosey)? I can not get it to budge on this 2005 Nissan Maxima SL.
Dude I would subscribe to you twice this is a step by step tutorial i can fully understand
Thank you I am not a car guy and this video helped me so much in changing my idle pulley on my 97 firebird.
Great info, Thanks! The camera angles are Awesome, and you get right to the point. So appreciate!
Glad it was helpful!
I recently bought a 1999 ranger xlt with the 3.0
It has 199000 miles and I ran into the same problem with the idler pulley squeaking,
So I removed it it is the original, I cleaned the bearing removed the seal on both sides and repack it with high temp grease, put it back on and is nice and quiet.
Thanks for your help Robert and I will definitely be stopping by the auto parts store today! Have a great day! Susan :)
Susan D Robert pretty much nailed it. You can totally do this yourself no problem and for a lot cheaper. It is worth it and you will learn a lot! Let me know if you have any questions and thanks *****
Hi . You are doing great job by videoing every repair you do in any car,
You did give me the confidence to change the break on my Tacoma, thank you very much.
If you can, would you please put more video on Tacoma.
Thanks.
Very Pro. Great voice over. Loved the fast forward & fade on the boring part!
Dinh Dover Thanks! Glad you liked the video!
Chris I replaced the drums in my B3000. Thanks!!!
Now I have to replace the pulley. thanks
Miguel Maldonado Awesome! Thanks for the update and nice work!
This video helped thank you. My 07 Ram 1500 had the same issue just a slight wobble in the pulley. Instead of replacing like I should've I just torqued it back to factory specs. I had to get going, it seem to silence the wobbling noise. Will probably need to be replaced down the road.
Dang , you have the fastest wrist action I have ever seen 😳
You inspire me to keep making car repair videos!
I'm glad you find the videos inspiring!
Clear description of different parts. Thanks for your explanation.
I know very little in mechanic but I was wondering how do you know when you've put the right amount of torq on the bolt when you use a simple ratchet? Thanks for taking the time to show us the steps, I appreciate it (y)! All the best on your projects
You get a feel for it after a while, using a torque wrench is still your best bet though!
Excellent video, motivated me to replace pully on my Suzuki Vitara. Thanks
Excellent video. However, I need both my upper and lower idler pulleys replaced, as well as the diagnostic belt. Do you have videos on how to replace both idler pulleys as well as the diagnostic belt? Thank you.
Hi Chris, I have a pulley in my Scion that doesn't have any nuts it seems to screw off, so how do I take this pulley off???
Thanks for teaching me everything I know so far, much respect.
