I just saw this video today and I live in Hawaii. FYI, Char Hung Sut has closed permanently if anyone was thinking of going there. Our favorite is Aiea Manapua, they have loads of meat in their manapua and have lots of different flavors and in steam or baked manapua style. They also have the largest size Pork Hash and Half Moon.
I'm on a Tabieats video binge! I miss home so much I decided to watch all your Hawaii videos and now I'm craving all of those food we can't get here in Alaska.
Have you guys ever tried the Vietnamese version? We call it bánh bao; the filling usually consist of ground pork, egg, onions and mushrooms and there's always a quarter of a boiled egg (or a whole quail egg in some case) and a piece of lạp xưởng (how we call the Chinese red pork sausage) in it.
I feel inspired! I've lived in Oahu 2 years now and never been to Chinatown. Looking at these delicious manapua are the motivation I need to try going there. Haha Love yalls videos and have for years!
about 3 years ago, our family went on a 1 day manapua challenge...between baked and steamed manapuas... I have to tell you that we liked BOTH...one excels at *baked*char siu bao and the other excels at *steamed* char siu bao...get BOTH ! But yes, you must try Libby's that's about 1.6 miles away from Royal Kitchen... All 3 places ...oh man...makes my mouth water...
I am so glad that you made this video in Honolulu China town Hawaii.all the delicious Fan and Manapua make my mouth watering, Hope the pandemic is over soon so we could visit Honolulu and Japan again. Thanks for sharing!
I believe this is one of your well liked food vids! For me at least! Brought back so many happy, hearty delicious memories of Chinese pastries and steamed buns filled with so much yummyness! This is a most enjoyable time for me to watch this! Thank you, guys!
the half moon is like hagao. it is just weat starch (it only works with weat starch not with corn starch or whatever). you just mix it with boiling water, it has to have the consistency of an earlobe. then you fill and steam it. and voila. it is sooo super easy.
Now you guys make me wanting some of this buns badly. Hawaii is to me another place to travel that I dream going. thank you so much for these videos. greetings from Argentina.
I am from Albuquerque and I just got married to a guy from Hawaii but he's from Hawaii I tried those manipulas they're really good I want to learn how to make him thank you Veronica from Barstow
Great video. I love Char hung sut but love Royal Kitchen even more. Have many great memories of my dad picking up baked manapua from there every weekend for the family...way back in the 70s. Haven't been there in so long, I didn't know they have kalua pig filled manapua now, I'll have to try that.
They all look so yummy! Have you guys done a manapua recipe video yet? They're not so hard to make, hardest part is deciding on which filling to make. Coconut chicken curry might be my fave homemade!
Wow... you dont know how much I miss manapua!! My last manapua was in 1985.. we cant get it here in georgia. Never had the baked, stemmed is the best.. lol
Back in 1970-1971 I was a young boy of 11 we levied on Prince Edwards street a few blocks on the mouton side of Waikiki beach, every Sunday there was this older Chinese man that would walk the streets in the neighborhood in the morning, he had a shoulder stick that he would carry two big pots on, he sold Manapua and I think potstickers or Chinese dumplings the Manapua were just the best, I really miss that kind of food, I now live in Roseau MN. Dry hamburgers, dry fried chicken, dry pizza, no flavor in the food here at all, kind of the edge of the earth……
U-Choice manapua is for real the best. Went there a few times last summer on my trip to Oahu. But, this place (not sure of the name back then) was my favorite when I lived in Honolulu 40 years ago back when the main market was Foodland.
Royal Kitchen is one of my favorites and Char Hung Sut is solid for a meal. Check out Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery down the street on Maunakea street near Nam Fong next time you're in town. Their baked manapua and pork hash is good as well.
Yes, I've heard on social media about Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery ...it sometimes beats Char Hung Sut in the manapua taste test...never went there even though I past there for work...
Char Hung Sut's manapua can be filling and heavy. Its good for a filling lunch. The baked manapua at SCYB is similar to Royal Kitchen. Don't forget to try a pork hash from SCYB! Their mochi rice dumpling and half moons are good as well.
Aloha, Shinichi. Tell Satoshi, “Manapua” comes from a shortened version of a Hawaiian description “Mea-ono-pua’a”. (Thing-delicious-pig. OR Delicious thing with pork)! Maybe you could cook half moon! You would Chinese wheat starch powder instead of flour to make the wrapper. You had the best of the best on this show!!! Makes me hungry!
Place to get Manapua-Chun Wah Kam Noodle Factory, Char Hung Sut Royal Kitchen, Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery and Libbys. Chun Wah Kam has many outlets throughout Oahu. In Southern California Hong Kong Bakery in Torrance.
Now I really miss Honolulu...great friends and delicious food like chow fun and manapua. We have manapua here in the Philippines, but none of it is delicious as in Honolulu.
We were at U choice inn today to buy Manapua and half moon lol those other 2 places on your video have really good dim sum also. I've gotta try that kalua pork Manapua the next time I go to royal kitchen I've never tried that one before and it looked yummy!
You should check out Honolulu Kitchen in Waipahu (ironic). They have some pretty good fried mini manapua in all different types of fillings. It's really good.
Thank you for making this video, I have been consistently disappointed by Libby's for the past few years and have been looking for a new favorite manapua place.
Same here, and I haven't been back in years. I lived at the end of Kalani St near Puuhale from 1939 until 1951. That manapua place used to be a corner store.
Great video! I love making these so much! Super simple and extremely versatile! Also, you guys should try dipping them in hoisin sauce. This is what some Filipinos do with siopao (manapua). Super tasty! :)
Banh Bao = in Viet(namese); Char Siu Manapua or uh, Chinese Steamed Buns - it is traditionally made with pork, like Pork Hash aka Shumai. (different than gyoza). I love all Dim Sum stuff !
All of those looked good, each in their own ways! I would love to try the one with kalua pork. That sounds like such a good variation. :-) Thanks for the video!
Good to see how the chinese pork bun has so many different versions around the world, I prefer the Cambodian version it has Shiitake Mushrooms, Boiled Egg and Slice of Chinese Sausage, sometimes Chinese cabbage with savoury pork with a lot of black pepper and salt. Prefer this version to Cantonese BBQ pork bun I find this too sweet for my taste.
I remember Don Quijote in Honolulu and Waipahu. Last time I was there was a few years ago. I went to Hawaii with my mom and my aunt. I remember having to use the restroom and passing by the security office. Two high school girls were caught shoplifting. After browsing around and waiting for my mom and aunt to be finished, the mother of one of the girls had arrived, was speaking to the loss prevention guy and the girl. She was angry and slapped her daughter's face at the entrance in front of everyone.
Moo Moo Puppy that’s how we do it. She brought disgrace to her family and her mom wanted to let everyone know that’s not how I raise my kids. I never shoplifted, but calling my dad would have been my last choice of things to do. I’m safer in jail than at home after my dad would have found out.

Next time stop by Kents for fried rice when visiting Royal Kitchen, my fave fried rice ever

offthesidelines oh my I just hate those eggs in my bao!
offthesidelines one of my favorites we have a Filipino version called bola bola
So Ono!!!!! You went to all the good places and ate all of my favorite food!!! Now I'm hungry and missing Hawaii food!
I am from Hawaii and char hung sut is my #1 Manapua spot. To me their pork hash is the best out of all of the manapua spots.
The pork hash was definitely delicious!
bbygurl808ILY Exactly! So popular when they sell out, they close. Sometimes as soon as 10am. They open at 5am! Best Manapua on Oahu, hands down!
Their half moon and pork hash are the best as well.

Hard to beat Char Hung Sut manapua. They've been around for a long, long time. I use to go there as a child with my family and buy a dozen to go.
They are closed!!

waiting to eat breakfast and you're KILLING ME!!!!!!! Ohhhhhh, I wish I could be having some~ esp. the baked manapua!
Cha Tsao Bao's and chao fun are life!
Mouthwatering video! Thanks, Shinichi and Satoshi!
Manapua rocks!
This is such a great video. I can't believe I missed out on China Town the last time I visited!
They all look so yummy! Have you guys done a manapua recipe video yet? They're not so hard to make, hardest part is deciding on which filling to make. Coconut chicken curry might be my fave homemade!

Ooooh I tried Chow Fun once in New York years ago and I haven't seen it since! I have such good food memories of that meal!
U-Choice manapua is for real the best. Went there a few times last summer on my trip to Oahu. But, this place (not sure of the name back then) was my favorite when I lived in Honolulu 40 years ago back when the main market was Foodland.
everything looks absolutely delicious I love Char siu bao so I would love these
Guys, I need a big pillowy manapua filled with scrumptious meat! It looks beyond delicious! Thanks for introducing us to Manapua Heaven!
Char Hung Sut has the best traditional manapua and Royal Kitchen has manapua with unique fillings--good choices!
Royal Kitchen is one of my favorites and Char Hung Sut is solid for a meal. Check out Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery down the street on Maunakea street near Nam Fong next time you're in town. Their baked manapua and pork hash is good as well.

The best manapua....Libby's Manapua Shop!!! Unfortunately, it closed down after nearly six decades in business.
I’m sorry to hear that. I hear that char hung sut also closed...
I hope I go to Honolulu this summer so I can try these dishes!
Enjoy!
is the pork bun like a normal bread bun with meat inside the dough
so it's baked in the oven that way???? could you show us pls
Love the video! Love Char Hung Sut! You need the mustard sauce for dipping.
Oh yeah I completely forgot about he mustard sauce!
Everybody born & raised in hawaii knows Libby's is da bestest manapua, unless you can make your own hehe great video! I miss home =)
If I had to live off of one food for the rest of my life, char siu manapua might be it. Seriously love it, can't go wrong ever.
I would love to see you two try and recreate these 😊
I miss manapua!!!!! I’m craving that right now 👀😩 my mouth is watering up
No Libby's?
Aloha, Shinichi. Tell Satoshi, “Manapua” comes from a shortened version of a Hawaiian description “Mea-ono-pua’a”. (Thing-delicious-pig. OR Delicious thing with pork)! Maybe you could cook half moon! Place to get Manapua-Chun Wah Kam Noodle Factory, Char Hung Sut Royal Kitchen, Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery and Libbys.
Chun Wah Kam has many outlets throughout Oahu. In Southern California Hong Kong Bakery in Torrance.

All that looked so great and delicious. Thank you for sharing.
Now I really miss Honolulu...great friends and delicious food like chow fun and manapua. We have manapua here in the Philippines, but none of it is delicious as in Honolulu.
CHAR SIU BAOOOOOOO!! So freaking good! Although I've only ever had it in Ottawa.
Kinda reminds me of nikuman! Oh what I would do for Nikuman during Norwegian Autumn... so cold...
We were at U choice inn today to buy Manapua and half moon lol those other 2 places on your video have really good dim sum also. I've gotta try that kalua pork Manapua the next time I go to royal kitchen I've never tried that one before and it looked yummy!
This looked fantastic, I wanted to try them all. :)
I have been to this spot many times .The Ginger chicken is the bomb!
You should check out Honolulu Kitchen in Waipahu (ironic). They have some pretty good fried mini manapua in all different types of fillings. It's really good.
Ohh that does sound tempting. Next visit for sure!
Love love manapaua .... miss.
I've been to Honolulu only twice and never made it to Chinatown. Everything looks tasty indeed. Fun video. 👍
Manapua looks amazing!
Eli Rm
It is. 🌺😋
You should really try Crispy Gau Gee - it's a HUGE rectangular fried wonton; We like the ones from Golden Eagle or Duk Kee.
Thank you for making this video, I have been consistently disappointed by Libby's for the past few years and have been looking for a new favorite manapua place.
That looks so crazy yummy!
Looks so yummy.
Going next month, I have to try this for sure!
Thank you for this review. Yeah, Royal Kitchen at the Chinese Cultural Center is the best.
are you guys going to the Philippines soon?
Definitely going to go to these places!
My favorite place is on the corner of Kalihi Street and Kalani Street. I don't know it is still there.
Same here, and I haven't been back in years. I lived at the end of Kalani St near Puuhale from 1939 until 1951. That manapua place used to be a corner store.

Definitely. I miss these.

OMG that looks so good, I sure miss this. I heard Libby’s Manapua closed☺️
Some of my favorite manapua places in Hawai'i!
Yum!!!! Love the flat noodles with cabbage and soysauce and and and!!!!!!!!
Libby's Manapua is famous for their manapuas. But the best is always from the manapua man, if you can find them (the original food truck).
Leonard’s Malasada is famous for their malasadas. But the best is always from the menehunes, if you can find them ( 😉 ). Teehee 😜
i LOVE baked pork bun!!!!!
would you guys ever go to China (esp. GuangZhou) or HK for an authentic dimsum culture though?
I remember Don Quijote in Honolulu and Waipahu. Last time I was there was a few years ago. I went to Hawaii with my mom and my aunt.
