Hey guys! We had a lot of fun making this video. Hope you enjoy learning about Hawaii's iconic plate lunchand also hoping that you are hungry by the end of the video.
It was really sweet hearing about how the curry tasted like one he ate as a child. It's interesting to think that 40+ years ago someone moved to Hawaii from Japan, used their family recipe, and it hasn't changed.
you guys are hands down my favorite TH-cam channel. I look forward to watching your videos all the time. It's great because I live in the states, dont have the extra money to travel just yet. I love getting to live vicariously though you guys. Seeing your videos always brightens up my day. Much love from Massachusetts United States!!
My favorite is St Louis drive in, the food looks amazing, I love fresh sashimi, love chicken and teriyaki beef. This was a fun video to watch, good thing I ate before I watched it, or I would be so hungry. Cant wait to go to Hawaii and partake of all the good food and shopping and just enjoy Hawaii. Thanks Satoshi and Shinichi, this was awesome!!
I haven't been to Rainbow in YEARS! I used to l love the Pork Long Rice and the Loco Moco there. I also liked to get a slush with it. I like Naty's Kitchen too. They really have the best Pinakbet and I like how you can choose what you want. Great Video Guys! Thanks!
I want to say thank you for your fantastic Hawaii food videos, it helped me navigate all the food spots when I was in Honolulu in March. Fave spots had to be Ono seafood and Da Crab Shack Kapolei, as well as Leonards bakery (who could pass up Malasadas?) I'm going to Japan next Spring (Tokyo and Kyoto) and would love to see a restaurant and activity guide for tourists, there's just so much to eat and explore!
Oh my god Satoshi's happy pronunciation of 'Honolulu' at 0:41!! Oh my god, so cute that I burst out laughing. I had to rewind it to hear it again. You two have made sooooo many great videos, thank you! Oahu is such an underrated travel destination. Once you explore and leave the Waikiki beach front...WOW! I eat like a pig in Japan and come back lighter in weight but eat modestly in America and come back feeling fat, sluggish and gross even after a two week trip. So sad, what the hell goes into the food over there?
American food is heavily processed and has many additives that countries like Japan do not, which is why we feel so sluggish and gain weight. It is mostly unhealthy here. I cannot wait to travel again! ☺️
@@lkmiller2010 Susie you're right. I totally understand why people get into food science, it's one of those ultra-niche, specialised industries where people toil almost in secret it seems. I'm fascinated by it all. I really wish I knew more people who are working or studying in this field, I have so many questions. One of them concerns this new fad of things being 'gluten free' due to coeliac condition etc. I noticed that it all became more prevalent when wheat became genetically modified; before that, when wheat was just wheat, this was not a thing. Co-incidence? So much to learn. But Japan's food, even fast food, leaves me light and energetic and I can even lose weight there. Magic land! Hope you're well. I also CAN'T WAIT to travel again. :)
@@SeanShimamoto Ha! For me it was the 'lulu' part in his pronunciation, I love it! It sounded like it was bouncing and curling around his mouth like a miniature inflatable kid's swimming pool toy. I love accents, especially when they hit certain sounds in pronunciation. I love Tanya's Russian accent on the Bookish Topics TH-cam channel too.
Though I know you have almost no reason to visit my home state of Minnesota, if you do I highly recommend you visit the Spam Museum in Austin, located right next to the main manufacturing plant for Spam. You can actually get flavors of spam there that are difficult to find. When the Spamalot musical was a thing the museum was the only place other than the show that you could get the golden honey grail flavor.
Colt My Minnesotan BF surprises me with a trip to the museum on my first visit to MN. As a Filipino, I truly enjoyed it. I wish I had some rice with my free samples.
thank you, I miss living in Hawaii and grew up going to Zippy's and Rainbow drive in. My favorite plate lunches were Masa's Massive teriyaki plate lunch(unfortunately he retired) and Poi Bowl's Hawaiian curry.
It took me a few years, but have perfected Zippy's chilli. The seasoning was easy, but something was always missing. I tried adding Portuguese sausage to the ground beef and that was the catalyst that brought all the nostalgic Zippy's flavors I was looking for! My daughter actually cried when she tried it! Zippy's chilli was her all-time favorite. I miss Oahu so much. 😭
Next time try eating pastille or pastille stew food looks amazing! I like poke from everywhere! Especially at sui San in Hilo on the big island of the best poke eve. You’re definitely making me hungry! Gotta cook beef stew and Hawaii curry now
WHOA!!! Another great Hawaii video! I always have to eat at Zippy's & get the Zip Pac, good choice Satoshi. Although all of the places you all went to were awesome & the plate lunches looked delicious I am dying to try St. Louis, that Japanese Plate Lunch is a winna for me!!! It was such a pretty dish & all so yummy looking too. I am so happy you all had a great trip! Keep 'em coming, love, love, love!
Has the summer weather hit Japan? In my teens I spent a summer in Edogawa~ku n was able to travel to Yokosuka I enjoyed my vacation, it was soooo hot. Happy home I stayed at had a/c or I don’t believe I would have survived the heat sleeping on those thickfutons n bedding. Cause the one table fan seemed to circulate more hot air then cool. OuntFuji had snow though n I loved it. Traffic was insane getting to the mountain. Line of cars was interesting to me. Reminded me of traffic on the big island when the volcano is erupting.
I've been waiting for this! Thank you for going to so much work to make this video, showing us so many different plate lunches. Thanks to Laurence, too, for going along on so many adventures! It's great to see him again. When you went to Rainbow Drive In, it was so fun when Laurence ordered the Green River soda...not only was it his favorite color, but it was perfectly color-coordinated with his shirt! :-) All of the lunches looked so great. The ones at Nico's Pier 38 remind me of a plate lunch I had about a year ago across the Bay. I had furikake salmon, cooked the same way, and it was so delicious! I love furikake...I would probably put it on almost everything if I could. And yes, we can buy it here in California! Where I live, we can even buy furikake in the regular grocery store, not just the Asian markets. Thanks again, and have a great weekend!
don't know how fresher can you get with fish dishes at Nico's as it is only a few hundred feet from the Honolulu Fish Auction. That's why that french chef built his restaurant there.
You can’t go wrong with local food recommendations from a true local (Shinichi). If I ever go to Hawaii I definitely will revisit this video for local food suggestions!
I put this in my Watch Later list because I wasn't too sure I should watch it. I knew that if I did I'd start to get homesick. Well I gave in. Thank you. Thank you for making me homesick and hungry!!!! Haha! I went to school at Chaminade University so I know St. Louis well. Good memories.
Hello Shinchi and Satoshi By watching your videos I so want to visit Hawaii. The food looks awesome especially Satoshi plate from Zippy. I would love to try them all though. You both made me so hungry watching you explain the items. I also want to try tradition Hawaii foods too. You channel always has fantastic videos. Take care guys.
I love how Lawrence got excited about his plate choice being the most expensive. Satoshi's choice of the Japanese deluxe plate at St. Louis looked amazing!
I'm really glad to see Lawrence here with you guys on this trip!! And omg those plate lunches are the stuff of my dreams 🤤😭💕 Satoshi's reactions are always so precious aww. I love seeing him try new things for the first time. Shinichi thanks a lot for showing us all these awesome places. Love your blue shirt!
Oh, you made me so nostalgic. I lived in the Kuhio district in the '80s. On Kaiolu street, between Kuhio and Ala Wai. My go-to plate lunch was chicken katsu. I used to go to the the Kuhio KFC to buy nothing but a pint of gravy to take home and put on my own rice.
I started getting chili on rice when we lived on Oahu! Growing up in Missouri we had it on macaroni, but it’s the best on rice! That’s how my kids eat it now (my husband is Korean so we eat a lot of rice, LOL).
They all looked so good. I don't know how you could pick just one. All the curry looked so delicious as well as the adobo. All I can tell you is my mouth is watering and my stomach is saying "feed me". It was, as always, a pleasure to see Laurence again. Loved this. Happy eats. JC
Love your site. Always honest, straight forward, informative with no show-boating or silly antics. I find both of you very likable. I am only disappointed that you did not have a meet and greet in Hawaii. Maybe next time in Ala Moana Park. By the way, I was in Don Quixote the other day and had to laugh at remembering your comment on the fruit and vegetables. You were pretty right on.
Oh, this takes me home! I spent some of my childhood on Oahu, and our hot school lunches were basically plate lunches. I was there so long ago that kids sometimes worked in the cafeteria during the school day. I'll never forget slapping those two big scoops of sticky rice onto each lunch tray. Haha! Poi, inari sushi, lau lau pork, chicken hekka, hamburger steak, poke, macaroni salad, haupia, are just a few of my happy food memories. Hawaii has always felt like my home. When I left at 12, I threw my last Plumeria lei over the side of the ship hoping it would make it back to shore. I guess it didn't. In all these years I've never been back.
Hey guys, everything looked so so good. I liked Zippy for Satochi & Laurence lunch plate, and I liked St Lois for Shinichi lunch plate. I am hungry now, I guess I'll go eat some cheerios. Lol. Bye for now
I actually live about a 5-minute walk from St. Louis Drive Inn...and about a 5-minute drive from Rainbows. 😁 Rainbows’ boneless chicken with brown gravy is the BESTESTESTEST ever! Hehe.
You two are the best. I've just arrived in Waikiki and have found your content so helpful. I'm off to Ala Moana shopping centre today and am looking forward to a plate lunch at Poi Bowl ( which I never would've known about). Thank you.
I liked this video since I was born and raised here on Oahu. I have eaten at all the places you mentioned. My wife and I go to zippy’s all the time and try to go to St. Louis drive inn when ever I can. But you missed one very important place right up the road from St. Louis called Okata Bento at the top of the hill. They have some nice bentos but i like the Teriyaki hamburger steak plate lunch with the sauce over everything. IT IS SO GOOD! TRY IT NEXT TIME YOU COME TO HAWAII!
I wonder if Satoshi's Filipino dish is mechado. It's pork cooked with peppers, and the meat is marinated in calamansi so the citrus gives it a tang. Laurence's eggplant is tortang talong, and I think his stew is afritada--enough tomoato sauce to make it red, but the meat stock, sugar, and spices downplay the tomato taste. Man, I love plate lunch. I'm glad there are a few places in Phoenix to get them, but the only place for lau lau only serves it on Saturday and is kinda far. Loco moco is my favorite plate lunch, too, though.
All of those plate lunches looked amazing! I've been fasting for 48 hours, so watching this made my tummy rumble... Lawrence's round cheeks make me smile, and seeing Satoshi's surprise at how good the food was, also gave me joy. Shinichi's nostalgia, though, was the best.
Thank you for showing this! I'm visiting Hawaii in a couple months with my son and husband, and we didn't know where to eat! This really helped! First video I watched and I subscribed!
I'm so, so glad your mom loved her poke bowl!! Love to see her so happy!!! Mom's day is coming! (May8) Even if you don't get along with your mom or step mom, everybody just take the high road/humain road and let her know you care! After all, she raised you or your life long partner! Find the beautiful common connections!.💞😄😍✌ Sorry Senochi, I grew up on Oahu and never heard any mention of Hawaiian curry. Yes many Japanese curry is low on veggies and meats (they can be expensive in Japan). Many Japanese families (not city people like you're used to) do make some what chunky curry. Even many curry boxes from Japan show lots of chunky ingredients. I'm sorry but, you lived a somewhat sheltered life. A city life. Several/many of your videos like this one, you only go to city areas for your reviews. Most of the plate lunches you reviewed here don't look like plate lunches to us locals. Catch my drift brah 🤙? Please ask construction workers, everyday hourly workers(not just in Honolulu)(you're missing out brah!!!), where are their favorite plate lunches are from! You'll be so deliciously and wonderfully surprised!!! Thust me and the everyday locals!!! Doooooooo iiiiiiittttt!!! I still love you and Satoshi! 🤙 ✌😎👍 😄💞💞💞💞💞👊🍲🍥😝
Oh my goodness guys! My problem is I always seem to watch your videos when I'm hungry😄. Everything looked so delicious!!! Thank you for sharing with us👏👏👏. Love you guys🥰!!!
Laurence is so funny and charming! It's been fun seeing him in many of your videos from Hawaii. And we got to see your lovely family too! This was truly an epic plate lunch video! Being a pescatarian, Nico's looked very enticing. Thanks for trying all those plate lunches for us. Hope you’re both doing well. Have a great week.
I love watching you show us around the Hawaiian restaurants the locals love. The food looks so good, Satochi's fried chicken sounded so good and crisp! I envied you so much. And Lawrence, cute tee shirts, I must say. Cheers... love you guys.
Since you're going back... Will there be a part 2 to this??? I'm going in September and already have a list of where I'm going cause of you guys! Thank you for another great video!
As someone born and raised in Hawaii, watching this video living on the mainland, makes my mouth drool! You guys are so lucky!! And the Filipino spaghetti is made it Redondo's red (hot dog) Winners. 😜😜😜
I grew up near Kam school as a boy. I always ate mac salad with vegetables. So this new news to me . I think there was a delli at the bottom of the mountain we always use to buy our local dishes. It’s only been 15 years since I’ve been home.I miss the local food 😂
My mac salad always had grated onion and carrots in it. I have been making it the same way, but add diced cucumbers and some times add can tuna or crab. Sometimes I add mashed and dice potato.
Yap !!!!! Hawaiian plate lunch is sooo so delicious...especially when you eat it at the beach...so ONO BROKE DA MOUTH.... nice to see you in Hawaii ...
Hi guys, i first saw u in the vid u did with Eric Surf6 and just watched this one. Just wanna say u are the nicest guys I've met on utube, tho that's after only one vid so yeah 😁 maybe in other ones I'll see some reaction to food u don't like, doubt it tho. Also thanks for this unique vid on the island that everybody knows but how well do we actually know it huh.. Thanks for illustrating that. Looking forward to seeing more of ur content!
Loved this video! Loved the format! Great music, loved seeing your family. I think I would take a plate of beef teriyaki from the last place with a ton of rice and some shrimp tempura.
The sound from Satoshi's fried chicken was amazing. Must go get some Hawaiian food now. It is so awesome how many Tabieats watchers ran into you during your trip.
Awesome plate lunch crawl. 👍 Wish you would have gone to *_L&L_* not because it's the best (far from it) but because so many people on the mainland have probably been there or at least heard of them. Hundreds of locations mostly in the U.S. West.
The food is pretty much the same food that we grew up on in Detroit Michigan. It's like the hood went to Hawaii. I cant wait for my trip. But I will have to find different places to eat. lol When I vacation, I like to try foods that I've never had before. I did enjoy the video though. Nice job!
Something I always found strange about Zippy’s is, the Zip Pack has fish in it, the Surf Pack does not. I love them both, but it makes more sense to call the one with Mahi in it, the Surf Pack since the two are the same other than that. Loved the video, it made me homesick for Hawaii. I lived there for 30 years, and been to almost every place you showed. I miss the surfing, the fishing, the people, and especially the food. Aloha from Canada.
One of the main reasons I miss Hawaii is the FOOD. Lol. But lucky we gonna get Zippys here in Vegas soon. xD Great vlog! I am happy you guys are having a wonderful time in Hawaii. :)
So cute the reaction of satoshi to the long rice pork , love you guys , i always have your videos on, when i do my make up or clean the house , or do whatever, is relaxing , and i love food ..
What a great video boys!! My favorites would have to be brother Satoshi’s Pork long rice, since I love chicken long rice. I also loved your okasama’s poke bowl at Nico’s Pier 38, and brother Satoshi’s furikake seared ahi tuna. YUM! The Hawaiian curry also looked amazing! Guess what I’m making my boys for dinner tomorrow night? ☺️ I forgot! There’s a Hawaiian plate lunch place in Monterey Park, that has a yummy mochiko chicken. That’s the only one that’s not part of a chain. Thanks for sharing all of your plate lunches!! Love love love this series!!
I have to agree with you folks on the plate lunch places. Like Satoshi, St. Louis Drive Inn is the bomb. Wish you could've tried their okazuya! I'd be interested to see how Satoshi likes the local style maki sushi and huge cone sushi or any okazuya. Not many places like the old days. Too bad there's no KC Drive Inn Waffle Hot Dogs too! Oh and nikuman from Chun Wah Kam. I don't know how authentic its suppose to be but its 'ono there. Look forward to your next trip home. Aloha!
They still make the waffle dogs, go to "Hawaii's Favorite Kitchens", it's located right next door to Rainbow Drive-In. I go there for their "Smoked Meat Plate with spinach and onions".
Oh my sweet Lord what an EPIC video! Now I see why people love Hawaii's plate lunches; they look DELICIOUS~! I think I may have to try St. Louis Drive In first, you both looked like you were in heaven while you were eating. Satoshi's was AMAZING and I love curry so I can't wait to try the one that Shinichi ate as well. Thank you for sharing all the best places to get plate lunches, this was incredible! And, as always, love seeing Laurence on your video. (I love his sunglasses!!) Thanks again guys!
Great vid! Really been enjoying your Hawaiian series. Glad to see Laurence joined you in trying some of the plate lunches. All the plate lunches looked SO good. Reminds of the halal plates you can get here. It's some kind meat on top of rice with a side of salad. The defining part of the halal plates is the sauce. White sauce is non-spicy. Orange sauce is spicy.
I love how all the food is a lovely mixture of different Asian cuisines, Hawaiian, and western. Everything looks sooo yummy!
Hey guys! We had a lot of fun making this video. Hope you enjoy learning about Hawaii's iconic plate lunchand also hoping that you are hungry by the end of the video.
TabiEats Larence has nice legs!
TabiEats Lawrence, sorry , misspelled above
TabiEats love your videos!!!!
I think the Filipino dish that Satoshi got was Igado, aka my grandpa's favorite, lol. It usually has green peas mixed with it, so I might be wrong.
TabiEats I sure was hungry afterwards! When we go home all we do is eat, hike, eat & visit family, then eat some more!!! Love, love, love!
It was really sweet hearing about how the curry tasted like one he ate as a child. It's interesting to think that 40+ years ago someone moved to Hawaii from Japan, used their family recipe, and it hasn't changed.
cpunching he lived in Hawaii as a child. I’m pretty sure he was referring to the curry he ate when he lived there. Just happy it tasted the same. 😊

I'm watching this in Germany (where I live) and you're making me miss all the Hawaiian/Japanese/American fusion food in Hawaii!! The best food ever!!
When in Hawaii shinichi is More relaxed while satochi is energy is off the charts. Love the food it's so homey.
I think my favorite thing about these videos is hearing Satoshi talk about his food. Seems like a fun dude. I mean they all do, but yeah.

Tinee Panda the Zip PAC is quite similar to Japan’s Nori-ben. Grew up with Zippy’s ..., so Japanese bentos are to my liking as well

Chella Girl it was pretty childish if you ask me XD

Chella Girl wow i thought i would be hated for my negative opinion XD
SavedEmperor nope. No hate.

Love it. Chili and beans on buttered jasmine rice, topped off with sriracha and/or Worcestershire sauce.

You two are the best. I've just arrived in Waikiki and have found your content so helpful. I'm off to Ala Moana shopping centre today and am looking forward to a plate lunch at Poi Bowl ( which I never would've known about). Thank you.
Selena J let us know what you think!
Thank you for sharing so many beautiful dishes enjoy your channel have a blessed day stay safe
LOVE the Hawaiian series! U guys rock!
That all looks absolutely delicious! Satoshi's reactions are always so cute!! Lawrence always makes a welcome addition to your videos too 😊
The best was the plate lunch off of the lunch wagon at Sandy Beach. Nothing like eating on the sand and getting that extra crunchy texture.
Wow! Thanks guys, now I’m STARVING!!!!!!! Lawrence is so adorable!!!
In Hilo, it is Kawamoto Store on Kilauea Ave that is exactly how old Hawaii used to be, bento to remember !!!
I'm so, so glad your mom loved her poke bowl!!
Love to see her so happy!!!
Mom's day is coming! (May8)
Even if you don't get along with your mom or step mom, everybody just take the high road/humain road and let her know you care! After all, she raised you or your life long partner!
Find the beautiful common connections!.💞😄😍✌
Sorry Senochi, I grew up on Oahu and never heard any mention of Hawaiian curry.
🤙 ✌😎👍
😄💞💞💞💞💞👊🍲🍥😝
Satochi was so cute when he tasted the Spam. He tried so hard to look like he enjoyed it!
Howzit, I’m from Honolulu - I love Saint Louis Drive Inn and Rainbow Drive Inn. Great job - very enjoyable! Keep it up! You guys be safe. Mahalo!
Oh Satoshi, I love you man! You always order what I would. :D 'll keep watching y'alls S&S vids.
Great content and great format for this series. Love it , thx for sharing.
I lucked out and stumbled onto this channel. Subbed. Look forward to your videos. This was great guys.

I love watching you show us around the Hawaiian restaurants the locals love. The food looks so good, Satochi's fried chicken sounded so good and crisp! I envied you so much. And Lawrence, cute tee shirts, I must say. Cheers... love you guys.
Those Hawaiian plate lunches look heavenly. Real food! I wish we had them on the Mainland instead of bad fast food and flavorless hipster joints.
Oh great! Now I need to visit Hawaii to eat the amazing plate lunches!
Since you're going back... Will there be a part 2 to this??? I'm going in September and already have a list of where I'm going cause of you guys! Thank you for another great video!
We’re seriously thinking of making a part 2 if we have time. This time it’s a shorter trip.
TabiEats well ill be waiting for some more awesome videos! Travel safe bros!!! Cheers!
Oh man, what a great show, except watching all that local food was making me hungry! Excellent variety of food shops
My wife and I are going to Hawaii in February we have everything we need except a list of places to eat now we do thanks guys
LIFE AFTER DEATH what island are u guys are visiting ?
@@Olamonz808 not sure either Waikiki or Honolulu.
LIFE AFTER DEATH they are on the same island so you guys will see some of these restaurant
I've never seen Makai Market so empty. That place is usually crawling with people. Loved the video!
Rainbow always my favorite, and you gotta have the Katsu. Best on the Island 🤙🏼😎🌈❤️
I am eating rice with mirin, furikake, soy and bonito flakes in rural australia right now.
Ahhh I’m going back in September can’t wait to eat! Love the videos
Loved this video! Loved the format! Great music, loved seeing your family. I think I would take a plate of beef teriyaki from the last place with a ton of rice and some shrimp tempura.
The sound from Satoshi's fried chicken was amazing. Must go get some Hawaiian food now. It is so awesome how many Tabieats watchers ran into you during your trip.
its such a great mix of american&japanese food
I really liked the last place, Satoshi's review was great ^^
Love your episodes especially the ones in Hawaii, grew up in Hawaii and all your food ventures is is so nostalgic!
Mahalo for watching!
Nice job!
That looked great. What a variety of foods. Too much white rice for me, but so many things from different cultures! Love it.
Bobs Hawaiin restaurant Gardena California is the closes we can get. They have Hawaiin music Saturday and Sunday 11-2pm
One of the main reasons I miss Hawaii is the FOOD. Lol. But lucky we gonna get Zippys here in Vegas soon. xD Great vlog! I am happy you guys are having a wonderful time in Hawaii. :)
I love the video! I am leaning toward St Louis Drive inn because I am from ST LOUIS !!!
This makes me miss the family run Hawaiian restaurant near my house in Cali. I can't get it on the east coast now.
So cute the reaction of satoshi to the long rice pork , love you guys , i always have your videos on, when i do my make up or clean the house , or do whatever, is relaxing , and i love food ..
Born and raised in Kapahulu, it's hard to argue against Rainbow Drive Inn! Always my go to...
I forgot! There’s a Hawaiian plate lunch place in Monterey Park, that has a yummy mochiko chicken. That’s the only one that’s not part of a chain. Thanks for sharing all of your plate lunches!! Love love love this series!!
That's what makes downtown Honolulu great; it's so real. I'd rather have that than the plastic touristy spots.
I love the way you said “greetings from hanadoodoo” English is getting better tho
Laurence the Hula Dancer... Yeah 🕺 Now, where’s Michael? Great video 🙂😂😅😴❤️
Another quality video! Looks like you guys had an awesome time!
@@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom what type curry was it then?
oh the beef on the Japanese deluxe plate looked soooo good!!
I love local Hawaiian foods! Zippys is so yummy 😋
Loving the Hawaiian theme!!! I sure would love to go here one day
Oh my sweet Lord what an EPIC video!
I've been to that food court At the Ala Moana mall last year, I should have got one of those plates from Poi Boy. What I got wasn't great.
Nice!! Your tour was good. It was fun to watch. It made me hungry. Keep up the good work.
Hope you guys are ok over there with all thts going on love your channel!!
