Took an art class in middle school. "Still life" is a genre of art wherein the subject is an inanimate object, generally motionless. One day the art teacher was away sick and we had an African substitute teacher who knew nothing about art and barely spoke English; she told us we had to do a "still alive" drawing, and I was the only one that realized she misread that our assignment was "still life." So, while everyone was drawing fish and birds I was drawing a stool and table and she reprimanded me for not following the assignment, I just gave them googly eyes and got a 100.
The next day the art teacher was back in and reprimanded all of us for not following the "still life" assignment and drawing animals and shit. I was just so tired of it all that I didn't bother explaining what happened.

Summer reading was fun until they started picking the books for you. I tried in earnest to do the reading but struggled to find a regular rhythm to read as opposed to marathon reading sessions which rarely happened as the stories were dry and slow-moving. I became very familiar with both Cliff and Spark Notes (more accessible than audio books at the time). It wasn't until the beginning of my senior year of high school that found out everyone else in AP English didn't do the reading, well everyone but Kelly, who was really mad because she actually read all the books.

    • @buildtherobots
      @buildtherobots 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

@@lovelydolltime8006 the teachers in the school district that I grew up in would coordinate with each other so that they all knew what had been assigned. The students already knew what level of difficulty they were in the following term and they borrowed the books from the school library, which had a list of which books you're supposed to read based on which class you're in. It was a small school and the advantage of the small size meant that if a whole class isn't up to speed with a skill or other requirement, the current teacher could speak with the previous term teacher and have both professional accountability and a certain level of social accountability to each other. My high school was grades 9-12, had about 500 students, and 3 English teachers, but we still managed to have an honours class for grades 9 and 10 and one class each of AP English Literature and AP English Language.

I got a plastic container, filled it partway with rice, put a hole on each side and threaded rope through the holes, with a large bead on either end. You can shake it or twirl it, is a thing. Well, my teacher said it already existed (with that little sad look), and I was like “uh, yeah, my other teacher said everything has already been invented, it’s just a matter of putting things together in different ways. There was no actual motivation to do it. Most of my classes were movies or parties. I was flabbergasted at how many people actually followed her instructions. My 6th grade social studies final project didn't even have anything to social studies. It was literally just about thinking of ways to improve the school. A bunch of kids wrote about how disgusting the boys' bathroom is and the girls joked about how the girls' bathroom had a sofa in it (of course that wasn't true). Oh also it was a group project. The worst part is that these two girls got an A for their "swaggy scooters" idea. The scooters would make it easier to get around the school and they could "fly". So this entire time we were trying to come up with actual ideas while these girls just made up flying vehicles to make it easier to get around the school and got an easy A.

I had a history project in fourth grade where we all got a folder that our families had to fill out, the assignment was about family trees and family history. The frustrating part for a lot of kids is that this assignment is geared towards the stereotypical normal family. In my case, i didnt have access to my fathers side of the family cuz i was a one night stand and my mother didnt even know my fathers last name. At best my score would be a 50(failing) and the teacher didnt give a damn. I ended up with a 43, and not very many people passed that project.
Whats worse is that my younger siblings (different dad but again, no access to paternal side) also got the same project and it hasnt been changed since 7 yrs ago. And again, the teacher didnt listen to any complaints from the parents.

The teacher who saw me dance was a retired Lt Col. He recommended that I stay in his class and take welding (both requires 4 years and takes up both "free" slots that dance falls in) to the staff. I avoided dance class for the full 4 years and got a chance to join ROTC later in life and a degree in welding. My social skills are far better and I'm more outgoing because I had to punish and delagate command in JROTC and I had the ability to go into trade thanks to him. He honestly knew what was better for me.

I had a math substitute is, like, eighth grade and instead of doing what the hell she was actually supposed to be doing, she went down a dark rabbit hole of parent abandonment and drugs, and anything that went with that topic.
This is bad enough to begin with, we were in EIGHTH GRADE for Christ sake, but it was even worse considering nearly half the class, me and my friends included, didn’t have parents with us do to overdose of drugs (hospitalized, death, or in jail because of it) or being taken away by CPS and were sensitive to that fact. Nearly all of us were in foster care at the time so we couldn’t exactly ask to go home either.
The sub saw my friend crying, and then gradually watched as the rest of our group in the back started tearing up one by one. Instead of stopping, she continued on about heroin and how bad it is for our society. I couldn’t even move, I was so in shock and in tears because I’ve lost everyone in my life to meth and heroin. We all had to step out and the principal didn’t do anything but tell us to go back to class and basically suck it up.

I literally just took two napkins from the cafeteria, filled them with sand from the sandbox, taped them up and called them Sandrockas. I got like, a B on the project. My teacher totally knew what I was doing, but she liked me, so I got away with it

My school had a mandatory class on computers that was out there in 90s (how to use search engine, don’t open random emails, that sort of stuff). Teacher from freshman year was an absolute Chad who retired that year. He literally flipped off the whole school and said fuck everyone on the way out. He also taught actually useful information like how to manage finances and how to find an apartment
Compare that to the replacement we got sophomore year
Teacher had us do a bunch of bullshit assignments on photoshop and Scratch. She had written instructions for each, but if your project was even slightly different from the teacher’s, you just failed; no matter how good it was. That class literally was just teaching us to follow directions (like every other class in the American education system.)
The worst thing that happened was in time at the start of class she was furious for seeming no reason. Turns out her keyboard and mouse had gotten unplugged and she thought someone in the class had done it. It was no secret that everyone hated this teacher and she knew it. The problem was, it could have been someone from the class before as they walked out. She was screaming at the class demanding the guilty person come forward and admit in front of the class what they did. She was almost in tears at this point. When no one came forward, she orders us to sit silently and not use our phones while she pulled each student one by one into the hallway to ask if they unplugged the mouse. It got so bad that I offered to take one for the team and just admit to it so we could be done with this whole thing. She didn’t strictly enforce the no phones policy, so we basically got a free class so it wasn’t that bad. I sent an email to the principal to Compton about what happened and a bunch of other parents did the same. She apologized the next day. She was later fired at the end of the year apparently because she hit a student, but I think that was just a rumor. To this day, no one knows who unplugged the keyboard and mouse. I like to think she did it herself out of anger.

The letter actually being sent thing reminds me of a thing that happened (though I knew a few times I had to write letters, I don't remember if they actually got sent). In 7th grade, our math teacher, during a section on probabilities, had us start looking at the newspaper and pick stocks. And every week we would look at it again and decide to buy, sell, trade, whatever, maybe switch to different stocks, or whatever. Well, about a month in, he comes in all mad. He goes on about how we aren't taking this seriously and we're just screwing around. Huh, weird, why is HE taking this so seriously? Well, turns out...he was really doing everything we all said, he'd bought shares of all the stocks we'd picked (and it wasn't like we picked as a class. We were 10 groups of 3), and then bought more, sold, or traded, based on what we decided each week. And, go figure, he'd lost a ton of money and now the school was pissed at him. This was his first year teaching at our school...and his last.

A "science teacher" had us set up a piece of bread so it would get moldy, *beneath our beds* and plant some carrots, on the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! We were(suppossedly) going to keep a log of the growth and development of both projects until next school year.
Yeah... fuck no. I refused to have moldy bread in my room let alone beneath my bed. Growing carrots was just plain pointless. The worst thing wasn't me having to deal with that shit throughout the summer break it was my parents forcing me to follow through with that shit.
My parents gave me shit for refusing to grow mold and carrots and "defying the orders of a superior." They weren't even questioning the sheer stupidity of the project, nor the date it was assigned at, nor the longevity of the project *outside of school schedules. They quickly changed their tune when other parents phoned them to agree about how stupid the teacher was for assigning an equally stupid project that clearly had no point.
The teacher was fired the following year for unrelated reasons but fuck her, they should have fired her for that "project" alone.
I will *NEVER* forgive nor forget, my parents and the "teacher."

one time, there was a drawing of a hand. everyone said it could be a turkey because it was almost thanksgiving and its a typical thing. then one kid said “it looks like a turkey.” and the teacher stared at him for two minutes straight without saying anything. we were all awkwardly sitting around trying to figure out why she was so upset. the teacher says “come out in the hallway with me. that was a very inappropriate thing for you to say.” the second they closed the door we all burst out laughing. not at the kid, but at the teachers ignorance.
later i asked him what she said to him in the hallway. he said “she told me i had the choice of either going back to class and behaving or going down to the office, but then she forced me to go to the office anyways.”
we all hated that teacher. she got fired at the end of the year though so it was all good.

Our Dutch teacher (I live in Belgium), who is a terrible teacher (which will become clear soon), asked us to write an essay about his teaching and what could be better, titled "What I think about it."
So, as he was a terrible teacher, I took my time to write a 6-page thing (A4 format), while everyone else had at most 2 pages. I told him (in a polite manner) everything I thought about his way of teaching. For example, "Please try to organize your online documents, it is extremely hard to find anything." (which he then called "pampering") or "Giving a clear explanation about an assignment could result in better grades from everyone because they understand what they have to do." (which he then said was "communication training")
Over the next few courses, I could notice him making references to my essay. It was obvious to me as I had written it, but everyone else didn't notice. He was making comments like "look, this is how I work" while he was doing something out of the ordinary for him (contradicting what I had written, thus "disproving" my point).
Then, we got it back. I got a 5/10. My Dutch was, grammatically and orthographically, flawless. An entire new page was appended on which he had written things like "that's what you think" (implying that because it was not what _he_ thought, it was wrong) "assumption" "subjective" (that page was filled with these). I compared to a classmate who had only praised the teacher, and he had gotten a 9/10.
The next time he asked us to write this same thing, I full-on insulted him multiple times. I proved using his view on objectiveness that he was a bad teacher and proved him wrong using dictionary definitions. He got quite mad at me after that, but never called me out. And I got 7/10 on that one. I had also talked about how he had graded all the negative reviews worse than the positive ones (for which I had actually read all my classmates' essays and analyzed them, once again to make sure he couldn't claim it was "not true"). I also asked everyone in my year and as many older students as possible if they thought he was a bad teacher and wrote the 100% result in there.
Once he got over it, he was actually a little better.

I really liked my middle school English teacher. We used this vocabulary book that taught us 15 new words every unit. She tried to come up with different creative ways to make us learn our words, most of them worked fine, one of them just felt like busy work. We had to make a collage of all of the words from newspapers, but putting the letters together. The thing is that normal newsprint is too small to try to cut into the articles themselves, so you had to hunt through headlines. A few times I used the crossword section to my advantage by writing out a word to put it straight on. This felt, so I only used it a few times. I now kind of wish I used that for an entire list, and finish the assignment in five minutes, just to make a point.

5:33 - I actually had to do the same assignment for my Psychology of Addiction class and I have to say, it was an eye-opening experience and I can see why we were assigned the paper. At the meeting I attended, the head of the place was the only one who had time to speak but he was pretty eager to tell us about his experience and was very nice to me and my group of friends who were also in the class. He showed us the place (which was pretty small) and would explain what each thing meant (such as this chart with names and numbers next to their names which meant how long they had been sober) which was unprompted but very helpful for our assignments. So I have to disagree with the commenter. One thing that should be said is that this was an OPEN meeting, meaning anyone can come and those in the group are aware of that. There are CLOSED meetings for those who don't want their stories to be known and that's okay. Also, the head was used to people coming to do similar assignments so he was able to recognize how out of place we looked lol

In a college health class, we were assigned to make a video on an important subject (ie. suicide, drug abuse, alcohol, etc.). My group was assigned drinking and driving. When it came time to present, we noticed that every other groups video was generally very serious. My group made a rap video. FML. Think we got a 100% tho.
Lyrics for the rap if you were curious:
    Hey, kids!
    Home alone?
Grab the alcohol, grab the phone.
Please wait (beep) for that dial tone!
    Grab your friends,
    Grab your peers,
And grab- hm- maybe like... 80 beers?!
    But pretty soon
    An empty keg
    And the drunkards-
    They begin to beg!
    So I grab my keys,
    I say "let's get more,
C'mon, I'll drive us to the store".
We were headed down the street about a quarter til five
Just a-movin' and a groovin' and a-skippin' all the stop signs
[Police man]: Dang those guys are off the rail!
Step on the pedal man- they're on our tail!
But I couldn't see out of the corner of my eye
The big red truck with the big red lights
I knew in that moment I was dead on sight
    Goodbye, world. It's been tight!
My casket's cozy inside covered with fine linen
And unless you wanna end up dead, you should listen.
You think it's cool to drink and drive?
I thought it was too, but now I'm not alive (now he's not alive)

I wanted the exam but the vote was in favor of the scrapbook. I eventually got it done (the night before it was due, no less; I stayed up past my usual bedtime to finish it) but I don't know if all of the students finished theirs. I had an English teacher in middle school that insisted we submit two copies of each of our essays to her. One copy had to be typed, and the other had to be handwritten. For "book reports" she made us write a summary FOR EVERY PAGE IN THE BOOK, in addition to doing a whole other ton of mindless menial shit. These "book reports" had the same two copy rule. The only reason she did this was because she was psychotic. She did a lot of other things as well. She once gave me a detention for accidentally dropping a piece of paper. I literally had a nervous breakdown because she made every day at school and every night of homework a living hell. I had to drop out of middle school and switch to home schooling temporarily because I couldn't handle her shit anymore. I had another teacher in high school who had a policy that if you had a single missing assignment in his class it was an automatic fail. It didn't matter if you were a perfect A student otherwise, if you missed a single stupid busywork assignment BOOM! Automatic F for the whole semester. Also psychotic. I had another teacher in high school who was absolutely cryptic and pretty much wanted us to guess what her rules or criteria for assignments were. She refused to explain herself or what our instructions were if anyone tried to ask for clarification. I poured my heart and soul into writing essays for her class only to get Fs because I couldn't magically read her mind to know what she wanted. She also gave us her interpretations of various famous poems as if her interpretations were word of god objective truth and would immediately shoot down any differing opinions by students as objectively wrong. She also made us read her shitty poetry a lot too. She was also psychotic.
The entire American public education system can go fuck itself.

The result was 23 serious college prep students running around throwing super balls and arguing if it had the force to obliterate a skull, there was also an officially nominated kid to play Jackie who was obscenely good at catching the uhm... debris. Public schools ftw!
Worst was hands down the story about the teacher who assigned the class to come up with ways slavery was a good thing, there was no saving that.

@@thebestcentaur it was back in the days when no one ever questioned the actions of honor, gifted ap teachers. Especially with kids learning online it's pretty much impossible for my kids teacher to do anything without me immediately knowing

In English class, we were given a worksheet where we had to list down some of the Dewey System subjects - the numbers were there, we just had to identify the subject for that number. Then we had to find those words in a word-search. Our school's library had this set up but no one thought to go to the library during break to figure it out. It was honestly an extremely difficult assignment because even my local library and Wikipedia didn't help me. I spent many stressful hours at the weekend researching to the point where my mum had to come and help me and somehow I was able to complete the worksheet. At this point, I was not bothered if I got a couple of them wrong, I was fine as long as I had completed the sheet.
On the due date, the teacher asked us to put our hands up if we had completed the homework. I raise my hand up, the entire class was deathly silent. The teacher asked again and was met with more silence. Then she yells out "ONE PERSON?!". I looked around the whole room and discovered that I was the only student to complete and hand in the homework. The others tried to explain that the work was impossible and didn't seem to question how I managed to do it. I was quite stunned because even the students who were always on time with homework didn't get it done. It was very unlike them. The teacher lectured the entire class and made us do a few lessons on why English lessons are important. I got rewarded six merit stamps (usually two or four for completion and handing the work in on time but I got an extra two for being the only student to hand in said homework). I was sent to lunch early and the rest were punished into going to the school library and looking at the Dewey System there.
Worst assignment but it had a satisfying result!

Sometimes they would just give up word searches, graded word searches. When I was younger I really wasn’t good at them, I just wasn’t that good at spotting words and as an ADHD kid I didn’t have the patience. My mom would do them for me because she thought it was stupid to do a puzzle for a grade, like you don’t learn anything. You just find words. She’s really good at word searches.

in my college chemistry lab, i had to watch frozen water heat up from 0 degrees C to 100 degrees C for about 2 hours and record the temperature every minute. how is that chemistry?

that one actually records phase change, but if it took 2 hours the teacher is doing something wrong, in my chemistry class we used Bunsen burners to heat the ice and it took about 30 min.

My AP calculus teacher’s favorite assignment to give out was Sudoku. His other favorite assignment was having us watch an episode of Numbers and solve the equation of the episode we just watched.
I like Sudoku, but the ones he assigned us were near impossible. I got smart. I had a Sudoku game for my Gameboy Advance that had where you could make your own sudoku. I simply inputted the sudoku there and let the game solve it for me. I did make sure it looked like I had worked out what number went where of course. Teacher never figured out my little secret, even after catching me playing said game during lunch. I said I was just sharpening my skills.

In AP calculus? Seriously? Even if they were super difficult? Also, nice thinking on your part.
