I noticed that 316 has a "checkerboard" pattern on the locomotive's walkway. It was a classic identifying mark on Alcos that once served on the Green Bay and Western. Is 316 an ex-GBW unit?
Thanks for the comment. A *few* of the other MNNR equipment is former Conrail. The ALCo RS27s are former GBW, and the GE power is a mix of former Frisco, BN, Conrail, and LMX.

@@SD457500 Oh sorry, I was thinking of another video that was 25 minutes long. I would just need about 5 minutes or so. The Video I'm planning will deal with the Alco road switchers that came out after the rs-11, before the century series. these were mainly low number production models. Feel free to check out my TH-cam page to see the previous parts that I have already produced.
Thanks for the comment! Last I heard was that it needed its blue card inspection, and about $3000 in repairs. So it sounds like it could easily run again without issue.
Thanks for the comment! I believe it happens when the turbo is slow to spin up, lags, and causes the smoke show. I've only seen in like that when they are throttling up.
I never got why Alco's were so lazy with their turbo. One would have thought they could have mitigated some of that clag with a bit better tuning. It certainly did nothing to help their poorer reputation against EMD at the time.
Love the smoke, injectors just dumping fuel in the jugs
That makes two of us, and it never gets old watching it happen too! Thanks for the comment.
Finally fully loaded center beam rail cars and great video too
Thanks for the comment! He had a very large train going out, and some good grades to tackle.
I like the new for the new year keep them coming
Very well done!!! Thanks for sharing this!!
Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Very good stuff. You don't see smoke like that from new locomotives! Thanks
Nothing better than the sight of a bit of turbo lag clag... Great video.
Great catch!
Thanks for the comment! It's something you don't see everyday, and looks soooo cool.
I can see it’s very environmentally friendly :D
Gotta love the Alco’s.
Thanks for the comment. I sure do enjoy, and like the sights of this older power. Too bad ALCo didn't hang around longer to produce more power.
Quality video! Keep it up!
Thanks for the comment, and kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Love those smokey ALCOs!
I like a bit of ALCO turbo lag. The sort that needs a calendar to measure it rather than a clock!
Me too, and the results are spectacular! Thanks for the comment.
Awesome catches
Thanks for the comment, and watching! Glad that you enjoyed it.
@@SD457500 were you able to get the Amtrak Amtrak heritage unit on no. 8?
@@eddieg749 I saw it, but didn't shoot it.
@@SD457500 I did south of Red Wing

You are correct, the 316 is an ex GBW unit, but was originally built for the CNW back in 1962. Thank you for the comment, and watching!
Nice one fine shooting
Thank you; I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D
The others where Conrail. Never sand blasted. You can still see a bit of blue . Just painted over the engines. There out on Ho scale model trains

Thank you for the comment, but I'll have to decline at this moment. I appreciate you asking though.
I never found the pug-nose RS-27 very attractive, but it’s nice to see one still in service in 2019!
Thanks for the comment! I'm there with you, I like the look of the Century series a bit more myself.
Does that unit still run?
It does, but is currently in storage. IF all goes well, it should be back out, and running in a little while. Thanks for watching!
That's a Steam Locomotive Wannabe. ;)
I mean, it was built by ALCo. :p Thanks for the comment!
Hi
would it be ok if I used this in my upcoming video on the Alco road switchers?
Thank you for the comment; what part are you looking to use?
@@SD457500 I would probably need a bout 5- 10 minutes of the clip, a few good side shots and shots of the loco getting up to speed.
@@alcobufff What is the end use/purpose? That duration is essentially the entire duration of the video.

great video and when was that taken
Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Sept of 2016; its right in the first 12 seconds of the video.

You wouldn’t happen to know the status on the 318? Mainly how likely it’ll ever run again
Thanks for the comment! Last I heard was that it needed its blue card inspection, and about $3000 in repairs. So it sounds like it could easily run again without issue.
I’m wondering what’s going to happen to 318? Hopefully the IRM or someone will save it.
Thanks for the comment. The 318 is still around, just OOS and needing some minor work last I heard.
What horn?
Leslie RS3L.
Thanks for the comments guys; I'm bad a horn types.
Neat engine. Nice paint scheme and the track is pretty good - not a lot of rocking. Why DO ALCOs smoke like that?
Thanks for the comment! I believe it happens when the turbo is slow to spin up, lags, and causes the smoke show. I've only seen in like that when they are throttling up.
That’s correct because turbos are exhaust driven and it sucks exhaust fumes into it and decrease emissions.

Must need engine work too much black smoke wasted fuel
Thanks for the comment! Usually this is a case of a bad, or slow turbo on the old ALCo's like this.
Poor train is so weak
Actually no
Packing about 55,000 lb ft of torque out of that big 4 cycle v16. Makes the little compensator pickups look like a gnat .
Great footage!
