  • This 2008 Chevy Equinox has an intermittent no-crank condition, losing communication with the ECM.
Parts cannon has been fired; three ECMs have been swapped in to no avail.
Owner is giving up on it, ready to ship it to the auction block!
Let's dive in and see if we can pinpoint the problem with the high-speed network and get this car to run!

While doing some electrical work and hoping for a quick departure, one experienced and wiser soul remarked "There's no such thing as a 5 minute job. Ever since have been trying to prove him wrong but no joy, unfortunately. That's many, many moons ago. As soon as you mentioned "Staten Island " I knew there was a storm a brewin. Cars left idle for extended periods have strange tales to tell. Tis a brave soul, like yourself that has the courage to slay the dragon. Lookin forward to more front line action on the Chevvy saga and hope that some claymore mine doesn't explode unexpectedly, on your diagnosis trail.

I was expecting to see if that NY Guy walk up and say Hey Ivan, gotcha a Chevvvrroolet huh!?
    I own a 2007 Equinox V6. ( Among my 4 Nissan's. ) I had the Equinox plagued overheating last Fall.
A sweet smell of A/Freeze inside the cabin.A quick Google search reveals this as a common issue.
I bypassed the Heater Core, and it has ran and cooled all summer here in Indiana flawlessly.
It is AWD, so with Indiana Snow coming, I am walking out this afternoon to replace the Heater Core.
This must be among the Top Most Ridiculous designs- to access the core. I am doing the 2.5 hr
cut the metal tubes under the dash repair- to remove this animal! ( 12-13 HR. to replace it without
cutting the metal tubes ). Looking forward to Part 2 of this case study. PHAD Rocks !

Saw a heater core replacement recently on a Ford I think that required removing both doors to get it out. Something about a long bolt that goes in towards the center of the dash from where the front door hinges are and to get the bolt out completely the doors had to come off. I’m an ex Ford guy and now will only buy Asian cars. Have yet to see this level of insanity from them yet.

And precisely this is why Eric O. recommends to do a visual and check as many non-intrusive things as possible before touching anything. The first open, then suddenly good CAN wire should've been a red herring, as should the twitching gauges. The fault was clearly present while the EBCM was bridged. At that point, get out the scope and check that wire while wiggling it and the connectors. Check pin fitment, etc. But you'll figure it out as usual.

Ive ran into the same issue. One of the codes was a p0700. Noticed after doing an engine shampoo. Found the tcm had moisture intrusion into the case half’s. It gradually go better as the board dried off. But had similar issue with the cluster also transmission would not shift out of second gear. I did a resistance check on 6 and 14 but cant remember my reading. This was over 5 years agoHope this helps

Seems like intermittent connectivity at c106. That 93k ohms may have been correct. Noticed it drifted close to 98K ohms. Would have been an opportune time to jiggle the wires and monitor the meter. I assume you then disconnected c106 to checked point to point resistance and if so, may have temporarily corrected the problem. Just a guess.

I have found missing fuses before the only thing I can come up with is that they are working on another car and need a fuse so they grab one from another car on the lot /dealer in the yard where ever, probably with full internet to replace it but forget... I don’t think it is always intentional...
I have seen it with auction cars maybe they think if they pull a fuse so it won’t start they might get it cheaper but if it was a non starter in the first place .....

Hi IVAN,What i see here is that the last mechanic failed to flush the toilet, and just left in a hurry.Maybe he was mad because when he could not get the car running and the shop owner said to him{ok,look, you didn't fix it so I'm only going to pay half your fee}take or leave it!!!
So the guy thinks to himself,{you prick}OK I'll just remove the fuel pump fuse, these guys are so stupid they won't figure it out, they don't know wiring.or he brakes a wire that's not obvious then leaves. How else does that FUSE GO MISSING???There's a reason all those cars sit for a long time at that place, they look a little shady. In my humble opinion.ALSO the fuse was removed after previous starting attempts ,that's why when you tricked it into 60 ohms it attempted to start, there was still pressure in the full line.Boy what a hard diag, thanks for schooling us,Ivan

With some modern vehicles the no crank problem can be caused by something as simple as a faulty coded ignition key, so the car's system can't read it so it won't unlock the immobiliser, that's what happens with bmw X3's.

Dash lights, guages, and accessories all seem to function normally. My guess is CAN communication is good. Going for the starter and stater relay (easy stuff 1st).

Hey man I have a 2009 equinox with the exact same problem and I think I have the same problem as you, but, i'm a teenager fixing his first car And I don't have access to all the tools you have on the video. I had a multimiter and some pins as piercing probes, still this video helped me a lot, it was a shame I didn't found it before I had the complete dash dissasembled, canged BCM and ECM. And at the end i think all the car has is an intermitent bad EBCM, why, because the car would start and then all comunications will be coming and going away untill the car would just shut off in the middle of the road. But I have a question. I know it is not safe to drive with a bad ABS module, But if i bypass the comunication as you did in the video could the car drive as normal? At least untill I can afford a new ABS module.

    Hi
Would like to see a fast dc charging system for the ev cars I know it goes through the can bus
But can’t find any information on it
It tells the dc how hard to hit the battery by raising the dc voltage
The ac charge is pretty simple it sends a 1khz tone with a duty cycle witch tells he charger how hard to charge
I want to build a dc charging system but have to figure out the canbus

Sometimes when debugging a device that won't work I check all the wiring, the components, everything. I determine that nothing is wrong with anything. So I try again and the device works perfectly. My conclusion is that the electronics were trying to play a trick on me by not working. Sometimes I can here them giggle and snigger. But after I prove everything is fine the electronics knows it can no longer play this game without me realizing they are sentient. So they allow the device to work. I am convinced that every transistor is actually an alien creature from the planet... hey! My keyboard quit working. I'll try again. From the planet... No Keyboard again! OK. I give up guys. Because they don't have a decent diagnostic tech of their own.
I deal with some similar places.
They fix what they can by swaptronics or firing the cannon and the rest get left until they run out of room.
The cars have probably cost them well under market value so they're not fussed about them sitting for some time.
At this point they call a diagnostic tech in and maybe get a lot of them diagnosed in one go.

Who benefits from arranging tests for Ivan? Where does the video take place, in some kind of workshop?

@@engeneer_ru5827 These are cars no one else can fix, so with Ivan's diag skills and equipment the fixes can be easy, but I bet most are not. He'll know when to walk, he's a smart guy in more ways then 1.

I hate to say fixing this thing may be easy $$$ for Ivan, and to keep his skills sharp, but IMO in reality this toilet should just be flushed at the scrapper.

It's just another 'grusty mistake' that is over priced and under engineered.
Avoid all these mistakes and don't buy one!!! It's an alphabet soup of
    errors; or, a P.O.S.
