Ben, I used to own a commercial greenhouse and garden center. We always had thousands of used nursery pots in all different sizes. Some we were able to reuse, but many just sat around taking up space. It’s Wednesday morning here Downunder. While drinking my breakfast smoothie I sit and watch TH-cam. Well I’m headed for the TV and say ‘gee I hope Hollar Homestead has a clip up today.’ You’ve made my morning, thank you. 🌻💜
Wow that is my start of the day in Northern Rivers. I just love sipping my coffee in bed and watch the Hollar family doing all that work😉. And now I go out to my garden and start pulling the weeds out after all that rain.
Hi, Hollars! Happy beginning of Spring starting at 11:04 tonight. Meg, I am praying for all of your family, but especially for you and the little one coming in May. Take care of yourself. Hug Buggie for me.
And yet her parents are always bundled up and wearing shoes or boots. My parents let me run around barefoot in the summer but in winter? No way! Frostbite is a real thing.
@jt1364 lol I grew up being bundled all my life now when it’s 60 f outside I’m freezing while my son who’s as feral as they come is ripping off his jacket cause he’s too hot running around with a jacket on
I used to be barefoot all the time, inside or outside, summer or winter. Now my toes get too cold and I have scuffy type slipper/booties that I wear. But that's only been about the last 5 years. I'm 63 now.
Every body's are different. Some people don't feel the cold weather like other people. And as you get older your blood vessels get smaller so you your feel the cold more. But even this some people feel cold more than others. Don't worry all kids go through this stage of running a round without shoes. We all survived it. Lol.
Greetings from Alberta, Western Canada! So jealous of you starting your garden already, we have a heavy snowfall warning this weekend, March in Alberta always interesting! Have you ever tried letting a couple of your radish go to seed? They have loads and loads of flowers that bees love, and get these delicious pods you can eat raw, they taste like a pea pod to start and end with that zing of radish, eat them before they get woody, you can even pickle them! Love your channel!
Looking at websites and seeing the jump in pricing and since there is only a few seed suppliers the seed companies are charging 4.95 for 35 seeds. Save as many seeds from your harvest
MI Gardner seeds are $2.00 for standard size seed envelopes, are fresh, great quality & I have had 95 - 100% germination rate for all of their seeds I’ve planted. Luke has a you tube channel, he & his wife have worked hard & have built a quality seed, plant, produce business. I’ve watched his channel for 5 years now, very informative videos.
Oh cool! I love the lettuce river. I hope you dont me copying that design Brett. I love watching you guys work in the garden, it's been snowing off and on for 3 days and it isn't done yet. I,ll just watch for awhile yet. ❤️🇨🇦
It was a tad chilly but yet beautiful to be outside planting. Like you, I pulled weeds from 2 beds. Then went and pulled the silage tarp off of one of my long, and tall beds to find a surprise. I'm always careful pulling silage tarps because you don't know what you may find under the tarp(snakes, spiders, mice, ect..). When I lifted the end of the tarp, I saw movement. I instantly dropped the tarp, and grabbed my shovel. Then once again lifted the tarp to see a mouse with babies, and a straw type house. I took my shovel and scooped out the mouse house, and discarded it in the garbage. Mama mouse ran with her babies to a hole (old wood knot that had fallen out) in the wood, and escaped with babies attached to her. That was my excitement for the day. I added more compost to all garden beds, and got them ready for planting.
I planted lettuce, bunching onions, radishes, spinach & beets today. I too have really missed fresh lettuce & salad from the garden this winter. I told everything to GROW!! So, hopefully it does. Tomorrow carrots, rutabagas, turnups, Swiss chard, other greens & peas. I have some radish & bunching onion seeds from 2008, 2015, 2020. Planted them in a separate bed to see if any of them grow.. who knows they might. Have had a beautiful 5 days of no rain & sun. Friday - Sunday was 68 - 71, today about 65. It’s going to be in 50’s & rain the next 10 days.. 😐.
Hello Hollar family, I have about 100 1 gallon nursery pots that the previous owner left under my house. I live in west Tennessee, but you can have all of them if you want them 😂
Sounds like me trying to use up old seeds lol. The little chickies next door came over and wanted me to go outside with them. I’m usually working in the yard when they get home from school but it was blustery yesterday. I asked if they wanted to plant some seeds & they said yes, so I gave them a bulging envelope of marigold seeds from flowers I grew. Before I could finish making my tea they came running inside showing me some camellia red beans 🫘 I planted. They were growing lol. I said go put them back in the ground lol. So cute!! But they planted all the marigolds in one spot up by the road hahaha. I can’t wait until they come up so they can see 🌼🌼🌼 I have a feeling we’ll be doing a lot of transplanting 😊 I can’t wait to see what all kinds of carrots grow for yall. Can’t say I’ve ever cooked corn beef. My Mom cooked it though mmm. Byeee Chicky 👋🏻
I just waved back too--didn't want her to think we weren't responding to her wonderful exuberance--then realized what I was doing! Glad I'm not the only one! (:
Who can hold back a smile 😀 from that Beautiful sweet spirit ❤ Ms. LillyAnn ‘ aka ‘ Buggy Are you gonna have a new brother or a sweet, like you, little sister ❤ 😊
Love to see the garden prep and the planting of the seeds begins! Meg, pls don’t overdue…you looked uncomfortable in some shots today! That corned beef really looked delicious🤗. So sweet the way Ben says thank you for the meal 💜!
With you on leaving it till spring to tidy up beds and boarders. Tho watching folks weed..when I've been weeding half the day is a little nuts. Much love and respect to you all
These garden videos look so nice guys. I can practically smell the fresh earth watching you guys weed! I'm so enjoying your work in the garden and seeing the plants start to come up. Thanks for the tip about the blooming minerals and the Steve Solomon minerals from his book the Intelligent Gardener. So he has the recipe in the book and best to make it yourself. That's great that you're helping Brett! Yay, a whole bed of carrots! I didn't know you could cover the carrots with a tarp. I cover my peas with a tarp until they come up. Nice, you have a bunch of peach trees starting! Congratulations. Nice bunch of trees Ben! Oh boy, homemade corned beef! One day late but just as wonderful! Chickens will get mushed cabbage! Mashed potatoes are always a favorite of mine. Thanks for this video Hollar family! Yum, corned beef hash for breakfast!
I am going to be 57 this year and have only put one garden in in my life and that was last year just to see if i could get some seeds and I did pretty good but this year I am going all out and going to plant every place I thank something will grow thank you and your wife for sharing your life and your garden tip with everyone i am so excited to see how it goes this year love your family and your videos keep them coming 👍👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲
I agree! When I bought my home, there was nothingliving. No bug, worms, pill bug nothing. Every year I bring in ladybugs, praying mantis, and earthworms. The gardens are doing well after 7 years, and I leave the 'leavings' after the garden season and it has made a huge difference.
I love watching your family. Y'all are my absolute favorite homesteading family to watch. I'm 76 y/o. I garden mostly in containers now. Thank you for surprising us with a video of y'all ❤❤❤❤❤
I love your real life homesteading. It's real and it makes me feel justified. I am a normal homesteader. My life is not Pinterest perfect and neither is my homestead. I laugh when I see perfectly stylized homestead. Where is the dirt, projects, and poo😂 I'm here for the substance.❤
We are just down the interstate in Spartanburg SC. My husband is a professional engineer and has the bonding stamp for approvals on inspection paperwork. Not sure if you are still having issues, but he will be happy to offer his services free of charge. Unless you have a bed of asparagus coming up !
Good video. So cool your son is so interested in heading up the garden with you ..buggy well she's always up for some fun..great meal Meg. Labor of love!❤ thanks guys
Great vid! Great seed analogy, Ben. 👏 you brought a tear to my eye! Meg, what's your due date? Hospital or home birth? Surprise gender? I hope! 🙏🏻 love & prayers daily for you kids! 🙏🏻 what do all the other boys do while you're working in the garden? ❤❤
Great video and Hellos to the Hollar family! Makes my heart sing to see you all get out into the garden and see what made it through winter. Wishing I was out there helping you all. Thank you for sharing your busy Life with someone who cant get out into my own garden any longer. God Bless to your sweet family, tysm! ♥♥♥
There is nothing like time spent in the garden to soothe the mind. It's fun to throw caution to the wind with old seeds and next winter, you will have awesome, guiltless shopping for new varieties.
Your family is so down to earth . It is wonderful. I Enjoyed this video too. ☮️👍 I don’t know how your wife does all her chores in her condition with the little girl too and siblings. It is amazing….. Your husband must pitch in and help a lot with things. You seem to work very well as a couple.
I hope that you see my comment. I came across this method of growing veggies & I'm totally impressed bcos you can GROW PRISTINE VEGGIES WITHOUT BACK BREAKING WORK and NO BUGS !!! And less fertilizer. The best part is no more bending down!!! Grow them on tables. And during nasty weather, you can move them to a safer area. What's not to love! Please watch it to the very end. Lots of DIY ideas in his other videos. Video Title: 12 Reasons Why I Grow Vegetables in Containers Channel Name: Hollis and Nancys Homestead
Great visit with you today; thanks for sharing! Here in Alberta, Canada, I leave dead plant matter standing to shelter the ground from wind, cold & it traps the snow for moisture. We don’t get a lot of rain like you do, so snow melting is how our perennials survive & gives the seeds & little critters moisture. We’ve had beautiful weather but our spring snow is due to fall for the next few days, about 5 inches. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
In IL and can't wait to be able to get out into the gardens. Thanks for the "fix". Noticed you had beet seeds. Great granddaddy taught me to soak the seeds overnight, plant and then walk on the row to break open the shell. Worked every time.
Ben, kiwi have both male and female plants. You need both a male and a female. Just having two plants does not quarantine you have one of each. Oregano is a noxious weed where I live. Keep your eye on that. Great progress. Dinner looks fantastic.
Next year those logs would be great for your woods (mushrooms). Strawberries don’t tell the beautiful one. Lol I had one pepper plant come back, it was potted but I forgot about it. Chickens were very vocal today. Happy growing season guys.
We had saved our corned beef until Monday also. We went to my dad’s to help him with a few things but he loves corned beef and I fixed cabbage with onions and carrots with potatoes too and took it for our dinner. Dad loved it and We had leftovers for him to have Tuesday! It has been cold and wet here in Northeast Alabama so we are behind with our garden! But soon it will be dry ,I think and lot of work to do
Great Spring Video. I have been leaving my garden to overwinter for about three decades, but my biggest problem is slugs. When you get the new kiwi if the other one does not revive plant the new one on the opposite side of the arch to the one that is sprouting. The other one may not get as much sun and be in a frost pocket. Your soil is looking really good now and those hens are amazing. so is buggy.
I just love the way yall think!! ❤ I’m over here in middle of Kentucky, watching you helps me know what to plant and when! Love all the knowledge you share and how all your children are such great helpers!
Our FIG . We're east of Lexington KY, For winter , We take the empty plastic mineral cut bottom out placed around the fig , and fill with straw. When it starts warming up I remove the straw out put keep the container there
I want to thank you for your recent steamed Chard idea. I did that the other day with my Chard and we loved it. A little butter, salt and pepper, it was delicious. I used to salute it with bacon and onions but this way was better. Thanks again for sharing this recipe with us.
Carrots is one thing I never tried growing and always regretted it because I LOVE carrots, weather raw or cooked. Where my garden was located, we had families of little bunny rabbits in there continually. So I'm sure they would have robbed my carrots!🐰 I envy you getting to plant garden! That was always something I loved doing from when I was Buggie's age! I love planting veggies almost as much as I love 😅eating them!😊
I've been putting comfrey around my fencing area too control the weeds. And the good lord had the bird drop me 2 different flowers a yellow flower with red centers and 3 beautiful deep purple 1-1/2 bell flowers. Hopefully I will be able too get a herb garden going this year.
I don't clean my garden till spring also... you never know what volunteers you'll get. I love putting chickweed on sandwiches like alfalfa sprouts, and Mullein... I let a couple go to seed last year and now I have it EVERYWHERE.
The first year my fig died back to the ground, but it grew back last summer. This year it gained a little ground. I think it is adjusting to the move to Oregon. My soil is improving from year to year as it builds organic matter. Sometimes all you get are small improvements in the right direction. I am adding a new garden bed this year. My fruit trees are a little bigger and healthier. Is your kiwi male or female? You need one of each. Some of my strawberries escaped too. I am giving them to my friend Debbie. She is thrilled to get them. I remember you planting those peaches. I grew apricots from the store. I love to experiment.
You know you’re teaching them well when 3 year old Buggy says “look the strawberries are coming back”..I love it! You guys are awesome! Blessings ❤🙏🏻

Hi Meg that corner beef looks tender as buttah! Love seeing Brett taking on a bigger role in the garden to free up Dad for the building extension.
Someday it will be called the Hollar Peach Orchard! Great job getting the spring garden going!
You can also "corn" chuck or other cuts as well. Corned beef was shipped all over the world and the only cuts still available for the poor jews in NYC were the brisket and navel. Those then became the cuts that were corned. When the Irish were looking for a meat to substitute for bacon (the jewish butchers didn't do bacon) the corned beef brisket took over the role.
Ben, I used to own a commercial greenhouse and garden center. We always had thousands of used nursery pots in all different sizes. Some we were able to reuse, but many just sat around taking up space. Ben, when you have to make new lumber border you might seal the wood with linseed oil. It should preserve it and make it viable longer.

Not sure if you are still having issues, but he will be happy to offer his services free of charge. Unless you have a bed of asparagus coming up !
Good video. So cool your son is so interested in heading up the garden with you ..buggy well she's always up for some fun..great meal Meg. Labor of love!❤ thanks guys
shredded corned beef hash and eggs for breakfast - - - - YUM! Looks like the 'watermelon' is getting along just fine as well. ;)
Glad to see my favorite youtubers doing well, especially Mama 😊
Did you grow that cat to so cute❤
You make spring exciting. You are busy preparing your beds. Planting seeds. Buggy helping. I enjoy your vids.
I too enjoy a Hollar vlog. Always so practical. I am an elderly parent who is to look after and like to amuse myself. 💕💕🌻🌻
Here in California I left everything last fall. And most of my peppers seemed to have made it! Yay!
Hi everyone! Ben & Meg you and the family are doing incredible. Small bites and congratulations on the on the way addition God Bless
Maybe transplant the strawberries into the greenstalk??
I hope that you see my comment. I came across this method of growing
veggies & I'm totally impressed bcos you can GROW PRISTINE VEGGIES
WITHOUT BACK BREAKING WORK and NO BUGS !!! And less fertilizer.
The best part is no more bending down!!! Grow them on tables. And
during nasty weather, you can move them to a safer area. What's not
to love!
Please watch it to the very end. Lots of DIY ideas in his other videos.

Channel Name: Hollis and Nancys Homestead
LOL@ Buggie! She's a mess!!! I know she keeps you all rolling in laughter! LOL
Glad all is well. Corned beef looked great. Did you mention when Meg is due?
I believe it’s May due date.
Real corned beef hash!!! Wish I was there for breakfast!!! You’re looking great Meg! You inspired me to get a Bosch mixer, what a game changer!!!!
Ben, kiwi have both male and female plants. You need both a male and a female. Just having two plants does not quarantine you have one of each. Oregano is a noxious weed where I live. Keep your eye on that. Great progress.
Dinner looks fantastic.
I did that too when I started seeds. My oldest were from 1994 and they sprouted!! Good luck.
Next year those logs would be great for your woods (mushrooms).
Strawberries don’t tell the beautiful one. Lol
I had one pepper plant come back, it was potted but I forgot about it.
You guys got the whole world right there...
Love and prayers to you all. Truly amazing...God bless
Our FIG . We're east of Lexington KY,
For winter , We take the empty plastic mineral cut bottom out placed around the fig , and fill with straw. When it starts warming up I remove the straw out put keep the container there
Glad to see you are letting Bret be involved in the garden…….he seems to really want to do it.
SEEDS IN THE GROUND!!!!!!! Oh I bet that felt so good. Greatest luck to your growing season!! Wishing yall a healthy baby/pregnancy and safe delivery
I love planting veggies almost as much as I love 😅eating them!😊
Hi guys, love seeing you love your videos love your family
You don't have to use brisket all the time you can use other cuts im going to try short ribs there is a recipe on line I'll have to debone them
I've been putting comfrey around my fencing area too control the weeds.
So good to see you outside Meg. Enjoy!😊
