Positive, erudite, humane, vigorous, emphatic, communicative and positive; what is not to like about Mr Fletcher. Great interview as always Gents and thank you for giving him the time to give us this insight. And… let’s hope he does have a future in frontline UK politics… 😉
One of the best conversations in recent times. His energy, positivity, and thoughtful insights, with a healthy peppering of humour, was refreshing to see and listen to in the current geopolitical scenario.
I loved the discussion of the 3 skills- visionary, people person, and manager- that Tom outlined. They’re such different skill sets, and it’s a rare person who is gifted at all 3.
Brilliant interview gentleman, Tom is a revelation. Great to listen to such an interesting and candid leader doing an impossible job in an ever increasing complex world. Humans need to do more to support and encourage each other. Empires rise and fall, but the river continues its unerring journey to the sea. Well done, thank you all
Fascinating guy and a great episode - a challenge to us all to be hopeful and search for solutions in a world of trouble and chaos. Definitely get him back next year please!
Yes to the above. I found this interview offered a small flicker of hope and reminded us that we must continue the fight for humanitarian values to prevail, especially for those most in need.
Hearing that al-Sharaa is putting that much thought into how to rebuild Syria is invigorating. We need 21st century intellects to try and tackle these things.
Fantastic interview, very inspirational despite the heartbreaking realities of the subject matter. The world needs more discussions like this front and centre.
Your discussion about peacebuilding after conflict reminded me of how people in Somaliland rebuilt after a devastating conflict - by themselves, and with support from the diaspora. But there has been comparatively little discussion of how they did this. It would be great to hear discussion of this locally-led rebuilding. Also perhaps Brcko, which is an equally great example of locally led peacebuilding.
Perhaps Humanitarian aid isn't just about delivery to the people but also ensuring their stories get out to influence communities of the world. What the UN sees needs to be visually captured and broadcast. Pictures and videos need to be part of world citizen awareness
Really interesting. For me, the UN is limited in that it too often is simply a broad reflection of the member states that comprise it. Unfortunately, many of these states are not where they should be in terms of progress. It is important and has done much good, but the UN can never fully champion women's equality, queer rights, ethnic minority rights, democracy and individual liberty in general when the majority of the world's governments are either opposed to or ambivalent about these values. The challenge is that a single powerful 'democratic' country, like the US, taking the lead in peace processes on the international stage has also always been fraught with difficulties because it often has its own deeply flawed agenda -especially in the current climate.
Alistair and Rory - you need to speak more and loudly against the dangers of inequality (which is by far the greatest threat) and as a result the undermining of global democratic institutions many of which were created the keep the world peace. Time will judge the nationalistic antics harshly and the future will be good but getting there might be hard. It is important for the good people to stand up for what they know is true and good even when it can disadvantage them (which is the opposite of what we see now in the US).
Aside from the hurdle of bureaucracy, his job would be considerably easier if the UN could bring itself to dial down the condemnations of Israel relative to the rest of the world. Shame this discussion didn't address that.
The UN is bound by having five (5) veto members. They represent 2/8,15 billion people. And that is only as China has 1,4 billion people. So 0,6 billion have 4 vetos. The insane hyperinterest for Israel/Palestine is scary though. It is as we are all religious nutters.
amazing guest - but who is killing or has killed these humanitarian aid workers? who is attacking the UN? (13:00) the guy says he can be more outspoken in this role and within five to ten minutes, he performs an act of self-censorship by not naming and shaming Israel. Israel has killed over 330 humanitarian aid workers in Gaza since October 7, 2023. it would not be an opinion to say Israel is attacking the UN, it would be a fact. it does not make any sense to leave out Israel’s name from this conversation.
I would remind you that the UN also refuses to name orgs such as Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist organizations, since it is beholden to the Islamic nations and the anti-west powers. As to your point, Israel did not attack the UN, it is prosecuting a difficult war against forces that have embedded themselves into and under civilians at a completely unprecedented scale. It also happens to be that Palestinians receive more special attention from the UN than any other group. This necessarily leads to tragic losses of genuine humanitarian workers, as well as Hamas terrorists who also manage education for UNWRA and the such.
@ so, when tom fletcher says the UN is under attack, what does he mean? who else could he possibly be referring to? the nature of this war is clear to see. i am not denying that - but that number of humanitarian aid workers killed during this short period can only line up with the fact that Israel has been attacking the UN. tom fletcher says in the interview that convoys are being shot at in gaza. this alone proves the way in which israel views the UN: an enemy. an enemy that, as you point out, gives aid to the very people they are waging war against: the Palestinians. the idea that this war is not being waged at those uninvolved with hamas is farcical - and the numbers show it. and these numbers include the unprecedented amount of humanitarian aid workers that have been murdered. a nation like israel, with a military such as it has, can not accidentally kill that many non-combatants that often in a short period of time. they must have been targeting humanitarian aid workers in some way, shape or form. side note: i appreciate the respectful nature of your response.
Where did you get this definitive information about Israel attacking UN workers and killing them deliberately? You seem to have not a shade of doubt about this, I wonder why?
@@anonymousonlineuser6543 considering the death rate of humanitarian aid workers in gaza is unprecedented, the conclusion that israel, the nation attacking gaza, is mostly likely at fault for these deaths isn’t far fetched. also - when the death rate of humanitarian aid workers is that high, it is very hard to pitch the argument that they are not, in some way, shape or form, being targeted deliberately.
So interesting to hear Mr Fletcher's perspective that the major problems of the future will be climate, conflict and inequality. I hope the institutions that we've relied on can evolve and adapt to manage them and I hope that the international order remembers that we're strongest when we work together.
I don’t like him. Desperately tries to seem as sincere as possible. Like a regular corporate team leader. Doesn’t quite feel genuine. Anybody else agree?

The UN 🇺🇳 missing in action when it fails as all things must it will mark the end of the legal order as established in 1945 . The United Nations was the legal name for the nations opposed to fascism. The Allies under their own military command became the basis of NATO

He sounds a little like Matthew Parris but with the travel tales of Rory. A difficult job to do when the state actors like Netanyahu and Putin are so averse to international law
Why must political figures waterboard us with 5 minute explanations saying that they didn't want the job and there's better people out there for it? It really seems to me like false modesty and disingenuous discourse.

That doesn't make any sense. The UN is there to reflect power dynamics. Otherwise, why does each government get one vote? If India were to split itself into 1,000 states of one million citizens each, should each of those get one vote, the same vote China or the US does? Nonsense. The UN can and should be reformed, but simply canceling the veto is childish nonsense.
