But by that time there really was no coming back and he just wanted out - from the creatively-restricting band, the demanding and intrusive pop star life (he was crippling shy and hated being in the spotlight, which obviously doesn't align with the role of a pop band's front man), and just the natural inclination to go on their own ways and seek out more liberating forms of their own musical styles. And given how well he did in his solo career, it was a good decision for him because he truly did create some of his best music working solo. In the end tho, it's sad that they split up at their peak, but Japan will always be a part of UK's 80s pop culture and will always have a legacy.

My friend and I were still at school in October of 82 and couldn't afford tickets for both Depeche Mode and Japan at Newcastle in the same week. For some unknown reason we chose to see Depeche Mode. Japan broke up just weeks later. We were gutted. I still am. To make matters worse I later worked with a guy who was there and said it was the best concert he'd ever seen☹

I can't even walk and chew gum simultaneously, how Mick manages to play fretless bass, do his gliding moves, look as cool as all get out, *and* clap is beyond me. You are missed, Mick.

The influence of Talking Heads 'Remain In Light' is quite evident here. Certainly when they recorded this they were moving away from the obvious Roxy/Bowie influences. Very funky, rhythm-driven and minimal chord structure.
Mick's floating about the stage due to the brilliance of his bass 2:23, and the epic drum playing of Steve, wish I could of seen them, to be 20 & in 1980 would be great.

Mick Karn and Steve Jansen came at it from somewhere else, and Richard Barbieri`s keys are just Musique Concrete- never a note, its all about the texture of the sound. Tsuchiya just went at it live...Only Andy Gill from the Gang of Four played distorted guitar in that way-Hard as nails on glass.
I wonder if Japan was influenced by Talking Heads REMAIN IN LIGHT album or if Talking Heads were influenced by Japan for Remain In Light? I know both bands were influenced by Roxy Music. I loved the 77-82 time in music. Very innovative
I wonder what today’s kids would think of this? Would they appreciate the originality of Japan’s unique sound and great musicianship? After the crap they’ve been spoon fed their entire life, I doubt it.
been listening to japan since i was 16, im 18 now. japan has its fans amongst people my age but barely mentioned even amongst those into more "alternative" music. the individual and collective talent of the group is something simply just not seen today- and regardless most people my age would focus solely on the aesthetics !
