I know everyone says how great Mick was, and he was truly a genius, but Steve is one of the most original and innovation drummers I've ever heard. The way he merges traditional rock / pop with ethnic ,Asian and Eastern rhythms is incredible and it's no wonder you don't hear modern band trying to cover Japan tracks. Steve also has a voiece almost as good as David's if you check out his work with Richard as The Dolphin Brothers
Agreed 110%. He locks in with his brother. It was like code but I imagine Mick brought out a lot of his talent as well. I can’t imagine how odd it would be to play drums to a fretless bass player like Mick.
I love David Sylvian's voice in this version of Swing, and I like how Masami Tsuchiya makes the guitar sound like a Whale call or something at 2:46-2:50. It sounds so incredibly otherworldly! Can't forget the interplay between the drums, keyboard and bass to create that funky, groovy beat. Props to Mick Karn, Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri!
Duran were a great band with killer tunes and teen appeal. Even as a teen in the 80's myself, I thought of Japan as being much more sophisticated and way cooler than Duran Duran
This will always be my favorite version of this song. Even compared to the studio track and the OGWT performance. The keyboard absolutely rules this performance.
December 3 & 4, 1982 (Some 39 years ago) Japan were in Hong Kong performing this live. To me, time flies & freezes at the same time... My dearest Sylvie/Vivian Poon, I really DO miss you, no matter what. >
Remember the Jazz Greats have told us many times: Relax & let it swing !!! But no one - except Japan has told us the same thing in an Asian influenced vibe, with absolute visual beauty, style & elegance before or ever after !!! And that is why: Japan is the most unique Band of all times!
Taken from the LP Gentleman take Polaroid’s released in October 1980 featuring Rob Dean on guitar who left the group, I believe this tour was from Tin Drum 🥁 Japan’s final tour featuring Ryuichi Sakamoto on guitar. The musicianship displayed here is as good as it gets, no auto tuning, the only presets were sequencers but then again that was Japan’s sound, innovation right to the last ever recording. 🇯🇵 坂本 龍一
Don't be so damned naive. This is an almost entirely re-recorded session, with so many overdubs and re-takes it would be an absolute insult to actual live-playing musicians to call it "live". I idolised Mick from way back in the late 70's, loved the music the band produced from the mid 70's til the early 80's, but do not for one second, try to pass this off as anything more than it was; an extreme glossing-over of a band in complete dissolution, who, by this point, had given over almost complete control of their output to those in charge of their public image, people to whom the word "integrity" was as foreign as the music itself.
This has been up for 8 years and has only had 25k views? Wtf!! People don’t know good music when you get the likes of beeber or an x crapter winner getting millions ffs.
Duran Duran said that if Japan had put out anything commercial it would have gone straight to number one. They still managed to get to number 5 in the UK charts with Ghosts in March/April 1982.
Tell me when the work is done Tell me when the day is through And I'll drive safely inside my car Taking islands in Africa [Verse 2] Shout if someone gets too near I'll know just what I ought to do And I'll arrive safely in my car Taking islands in Africa [Chorus] Now your feet are back on the ground Again she'll say the weather's dim But relax my love Relax and swing And swing [Verse 3] Things you say are not too clear I'm someone you'll neither know nor care But I'll sit here and watch from afar Taking islands in Africa [Chorus] Now your feet are back on the ground Again she'll say the weather's dim But relax my love Relax and swing [Outro] Whisper in the wind Whisper in the wind
why would you think that it was David Sylvian who said that. I do agree that this song is all about the rhythm section, but i wouldn't count on making Sylvian seem like the bad guy, since he isnt. But yes, Mick Karn should've had much more screen time.
Mick hardly appears through the whole DVD in comparison to David. Read Mick's book and you might understand how manipulative David could be. Just my opinion.
Nope, he really doesn't, not even Bowie can hold a candle to him, and I've listened to all of Bowie's music and he just doesn't do it for me anymore, but David Sylvian and Japan keep knocking it out of the park every time, and I never get bored.

actually there is a metal band who released an album this year with a cover of Still Life In Mobile Homes!
@ratdancer77 Anubis Gate i think they're called, i'd say it was a pretty solid cover, very different tho.

" it's no wonder you don't hear modern band trying to cover Japan tracks.", no, indeed: those of Gentlemen are just unlistenable to.
I was very lucky and privileged to grow up with Japan and I continued to follow David Sylvians career all the way.. truly amazing times the 80’s..
Absolutely agree!
me too, thumbs up for that...
The early 80's, primarily?
Me too. Still listen to Japan, Sylvian and Karn as much today as I did then.

Japan, great New Romantic band, along with Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Visage, Ultravox, Talk Talk...those were great times for great music!

Influential band, amazing song, handsome David, beautiful voice, outstanding bass player and great concert.
And very unique drumming of Mr. Steve Jansen... And multiple layers of synths by Mr. Richard Barbieri~
Yep, Mick Karn had few peers on fretless bass.
Everytime I wear a shirt with big sleeves I come back to this video to remind myself that if Steve Jansen can look cool with it, I sure can try, too.
Most amazing band and frontman. Big fan for 35 years now!
With Masami Tsuchida on one of the guitars... yesssssss. 👌
Now researching Masami san, cheers for the heads up!

the sound recording is fabulous especially for 1983 and later remastering !
Recorded in November 1982 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, released in June 1983.
Only the drums are from the live recording itself, everything else was re-recorded in the studio

Steve Jansen's clothing choice is very weird but appreciated nonetheless.

0:32 amazing
How the hell do you manage to film a track that is essentially a bass riff and not include the bass player????????????
I agree!
Its like watching these 70s rock bands when the lead guitarist lets rip and the cameraman homes in on the bass players left foot.
There should of been a karn camera especially for Mick doing his shuffle and little leg flicks imo?! 🤷🏻♂️😂
that's funny. don Henley sunset grill has a live video and the spotlight never hit the bass player there either. Mick Karn is something else, huh?
