I kept medaka for years and yes they prefer low flowing water. The term Medaka means "Top eye". The surface is where they like to spend most of their time. Food on surface are readily eaten compare to food at the bottom. The light cycles and temperature are essential for breeding. Outside, they breed from April to August.
If you want to stimulate their breeding, you want the water temperature above 67F and 11hrs or longer light cycle. They seems to be okay with normal light color, as long as you simulate the spring/summer daylight period. They will breed year round if the temp and light requirements are met, but they will have a shorter life span. Normal life cycle, they will live about 2 to 3 years.
When I was in elementary school in Japan, we kept them as our class pets. Being in charge of taking care of them was a coveted duty among all us kids, and we took turns learning how to properly care for them. I love these adorable little fish!

I've had the daisy blue eyes that came from @Peplin Creek Aquatics and @Foxie's Fishes.. they are the most beautiful, incredible and fascinating little fish that have been easy for me to keep. I enjoy watching the breeding and the way they scatter their eggs through the plants!! The fry do very well !! You got some incredible new colors and types that I haven't seen before!! The sky-red medaka, I have, appear in an almost neon red and the white are silver in color. The yellow have a gold and blond color. They make a nice screensaver if the filter is on moderate flow; they swim around all day. I have them in a 10 gallon bubble-vase which is a very large fishbowl.

Hey there Corey, i own around 10 platinum Oryzias latipes and that's their natural behavior they enjoy swimming at the surface of the water and swimming against the sides of the tank. Once they feel comfortable in their new homes they breed like crazy I gravel vac around 20-30 eggs per week.

Fwiw, most ricefish prefer water with next to no current. They tend to inhabit areas that have been flooded, like rice paddies, where water flow is almost non-existent.
These fish are top view almost exclusively, thats to say only one or two varieties are actually meant for viewing in an aquarium side on. So they're generally always better looked at from above as this is where the colour and scale interest is concentrated, much like a koi-carp. No they dont like flowing water and will die of stress if constantly swimming against even a gentle flow. A very gentle tiny bubble is what they love, not sure what its called but in japan the air is mixed with the water before it goes into the aquarium, when it enters it causes almost no flow at all. Generaly a filter is not needed for these guys but rather dense planting like guppy grass. I have platinum blue, platinum green, white and purple and couldn't be more enchanted with them. They all came in a batch these various colour platinum. They shine like precious metal in the sunlight, which they love basking in in winter and anytime really. They do spend almost all their time on the surface. The fins are trimmed in fluorescent blue, green or what ever the base colour is. No deformities luckily, extremely hardy little fish that grow extremely quickly with the right foods. I also have orange and white piebald ones and black. The black has longer broader fins so is quite dramatic, quite a different type as are most of the types from each other in size shape etc. The blacks look a bit like little Betta males, a rich dark black sometimes with glitter stars. They love their food, live food, daphnia and dried live food, high protein guppy food or Medaka dried daphnia or purpose made Medaka food from Hikari, deshelled brine shrimp naupili. Guppy food is a good stand by. Live Brine shrimp hatchlings are perfect for the babies but adults also truly love them. These fish are amongst the few species of fish that can actually recognise each others facial features, yea believe it or not, they also recognise their keepers so its worth making freinds with them when they will actually sit in your hand by the hundreds. Certainly one of the cutest freindly aquarium fish around.

I just watched your video of Pet Freed in Kyoto,Japan and they had the water flowing pretty strong in their tubs of rice fish.They do seem to like the still water though.Beautiful fish,I would love to keep them!
For the people who are like "but cory, they're swimming around and active, isnt that a good thing?", Not necessarily. Like how a betta is in favor of a low flow, these guys probably would want the same thing. These guys are not river fish and live in environments that have little to no flow. The reason why they strive in the motionless waters is because the rice plants and other plants that live in those patties consume all the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. And its not just one or a few plants that consumes all the waste, its A LOT. If you ever walk in a patty field, its acres and acres of plants.

Medeka males like to guard females and dominant males chase off less dominant males, They can live in a pond in winter in England but not with big fish like koi etc obviously 🐟 They have a unique way of feeding, they can’t just grab food like other species, they can only take feed from the side, so if a morsel or tiny creature is just to the right of their face or left, then they snatch it, but not if it’s right in front as they can’t see it, They are mainly top feeders, unique fish

You'd think that, but normal lampeye killifish, celestial pearl danios etc barely sell in comparison to a neon tetras. Probably 500 to 1. All for the same nano tank unfortunately :(
Aquarium Co-Op. they are, but I find neons delicate compared to other nano 'in my opinion'. my favorite I have kept is probably zebra danio. never had a problem with mine.

Within the next 30 days they should hatch. Been doing some re arranging and working on the wife's tank currently. Added co2 to it yesterday, moved in the wild caught angels and barbatus corydoras in tonight etc.

Best of luck breeding them! I would love to have some. Amazonas did a great piece on them a few months ago. They interviewed a bunch of the breeders in Japan and it was interesting how much effort they have put into getting the different colors. One of my lfs here had a blue variety, but I didn't have the room to keep them. They definitely like slow flowing water. They are accustomed to living in rice fields and ponds historically, which have very slow to no flow. Keep up the great work.

Here in Singapore I breed these in balcony ponds. Gold lame is my favourite,also Ulysses (blue,red) Platinum and Red Emperor They prefer still water.

We have some fry from them being out in the ponds. Currently no plans on selling any, just building up numbers.
Maybe your right. Rice fields have pretty calm waters. They are line bred but they're not called rice fish out of nothing.

Best of luck breeding them! I would love to have some. Amazonas did a great piece on them a few months ago. They interviewed a bunch of the breeders in Japan and it was interesting how much effort they have put into getting the different colors. One of my lfs here had a blue variety, but I didn't have the room to keep them. They definitely like slow flowing water. They are accustomed to living in rice fields and ponds historically, which have very slow to no flow. Keep up the great work.

Medaka live in still water, no wonder they freak out when you turned up the air.

Not sure exactly which fish you mean, but they are probably the white rice fish.
