      @@FatherFish I really want to get it right. I've watched a lot of your videos. I love the deep substrate process. Unfortunately I put gravel in some and I saw your video about gravel. I'm going to try to start over somehow. I watched the one where you put all the stuff in the dirt layer. I'd really like to copy this process for the long term success of my tanks. Again thanks for the awesome videos 😄

    Hey Father Fish! Regarding the dirt ingredients: peat moss, potting soil, and compost. In this video you added them at a 1:1:1 ratio, but on Discord you have it at a 4:2:1 ratio. Is the ratio between peat moss, potting soil, and compost important? Is there an ideal ratio? Thanks!

    • @FatherFish

      That vid is about 5 years old. The 4.2.1 is the better ratio.

    What sand can I use? I heard playsand was too fine. Do I have to use pool filter sand or can I use something from Home Depot like the QUIKRETE All-Purpose Sand?

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Play sand is very dirty. I have not used Quikrete. Depends on the amount of dust. I use pool filter washed sand. If you are careful not to disturb it there should not be a problem.

    grandfather, is there an alternative if silica sand is not available?

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. Any sand will do. From a beach, a river, a desert, but not a sandbox, it need only be sandy and inert (not dissolve in water) to be effective.

    would just a thick layer of sand also do good at filtering over time? without the dirt beneath it

    • @FatherFish

      Yes. It takes about 6 months for the substrate to build up a rich layer of anaerobics.

    its been some time since a comment has been in this video but using potting soil is just about anything acceptable that's organic? And can i use normal tank gravel rather sand so i can use a filter. And how long to let the new tank and plants sit until i add fish?

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you cannot use gravel. If you are considering using an ugv that will not work. Fish can be added gradually starting day 2. I suggest you come over to the DISCORD server where we can help you.
