- Tell me what you think about this planting. The plants should begin to show growth in about a week. I will leave the lights on for the first 30 days to generate enough chlorophyll for CO2 generation. That will get them growing. Keep in mind we are never able to duplicate the power of the sun.

Omg that is beautiful i love the look of all those plants. Once all my fry grow out and are old enough to go 2 the store im doing something like this for my 55 gallon tank with electric blue Acura fish. VERY NICE FATHER FISH

Hi FF, its me...again :) I think I have an interesting question for one of your future videos (I'm so pretentious in writing this) : How Epiphytes benefit from deep substrate ? In other words : What is the impact of deep substrate on the water column in terms of health contribution for Epiphytes whose roots do not sink into the "sacred soil" ? Some of your videos already provide some answers but it should be the subject of a separate video in my opinion. It's just a suggestion to go further on the subject. Greetings from France.
Excellent observation. Anubias, Java Fern, and floating plants all take nutrients from the water. They are important for their ability to clarify water.

Hey mate, what ph do your tanks sit at? We have out of the tap ~7.5 - 8.0 here in Western Australia which is great for the African cichlids. Just wondering if your pH from the tap changes once in the soiled tanks and if so to what?
Ph here is the same. Substrate does not change it. All fish benefit from hard, alkaline water with the rare exception of Borneo fishes. In the Amazon Ph fluctuates between 6.5 and 7.5, wet to dry season.
We set up our ten gallon yesterday. I'm a little concerned that i may have made the soil (and it was organic garden soil from my garden) too wet? When I added sand there was some seeping of brown liquid. I did my best to scoop it off the sand before adding plants or water and the water looks clear. But I can see that they dirt/sand layer is not completely distinct, i.e. there appears to be some seeping of dirt or at least some dirt-y water up about midway through the sand layer. It did not reach the top so it's not getting into the water, But will that prevent the anerobic layer from forming? Will it be too much for the plants? Time will tell I suppose.
It is okay. Add a bit more sand if it seeps. You are doing great.
Do you ever sift through the sand during water changes to release gas pockets?
No. Never! The anaerobic layer is critical for the system to function properly. If it is disturbed chhaos can ensue.
have you ever tried growing horsetail in aquarium? like Equisetum hyemale or Equisetum japonicum
I have grown horsetail in ponds, not aquariums.
How come you inserted those plants into the soil? I thought we were supposed to only insert them an inch into the sand and let the plants grow into the soil so the roots don't burn/melt off.

I have a 50g tank running for 2 years with topsoil and 2inches of potting grit . Everything is fine, would you add some sand on top aswell?
If the tank is 2 yo and stable there is no need to do anything. If you start to get a mulm buildup add an inch of sand to build up the substrate.

Question:
I’ve tried dirted tank with sand cap as substrate.
But when I tried planting. Many of my plants base stem near the substrate died & turned to mush pretty fast.
Has this ever happened to you with any of your plants.
Deeper sand bed with roots planted in the sand allows the plant to grow into the deeper substrate.

So is it ok to just plant the roots in to the sand cap only & hope the roots find the dirt in a few weeks?
I tried pushing the roots deep into dirt but the plants crown just die in me.

I want to change my bare bottom oranda goldfish tank to a dirted tank. I have 2 orandas that are about 7 inches and the rest are 5 smaller ones of 2 to 4 inches. Can I do everything in one day and then put them in a plastic tank with filtration for a couple of hours? I don't have any spare tank. The tank is about 50 gallons and has established filters.
You can do it by leaving the fish and the water in the tank. Get 100 lbs of clean sand and pour it dry into the tank. Or wet it and use a cup to build the substrate more carefully. Either way the fish will not have a problem and it will work very effectively. You want to build about 4".

Father what is your thinking about floating plants on big aquariums?
Depends on the plant. Duckweed covers the top and blocks light.

Find plants growing in the wild. They are perfectly effective.

How long do you leave the tank to balance out and neutralize all the ammonia thatll come from the soil? Also do you do lots of large water changes during the beginning weeks or months to combat excess nutrients and prevent tons of algae?
I do not need to wait for anything. The soil contains nitrifying bacteria that removes any ammonia. Unless the water becomes discolored from loose soil I do not do water changes. The tank is ready to go immediately and is balanced from day one.
@@FatherFish wow that's impressive when I've done dirt tanks in the past I had lots of ammonia. I didnt use all the ingredients u use tho. Mostly just putting soil and some clay for iron content. Nice videos!

Father fish I have a 5/6 in substrate.the only difference I did was add crushed mulberry, mangrove and and magnolia leaves to the soil mix. On top I added some botanicals. Also I squeezed sponges from my two tank and used seeded biomedia. It is heavily planted! My tank is not cycled. The ammonia is at 1.2 and no nitrates. Why?
I'm not a psychic... Lol.
But, if I had to Guess...
The heavy planting is eating the nitrates... But, somehow the nutrients are getting into the water.. Ammonia.
If you are NOT using an undergravel filter.. (Don't in a dirted tank.)
If your deep bed is undisturbed Sand, not loose gravel, it usually works out.
Will the water clear up?
yes. Always if left to do so.
Sir, one last question about the size. Can you please tell the size of this tank in inches?
55 gallon standard tank.

Okay, I'm hooked. You remind me of my dad, who was the best human I ever met. We both loved aquariums as well. I'm ready to come down there and be your camera operator for free, while I soak up the wisdom. 😊 I'm going to try to incorporate your method into the fairly new tank I have. It has red cherry shrimp and some chili rasboras and nerite snails so far. I hope they'll survive my mucking them around. I already have a couple inches of eco complete black substrate so I can put the sand right over it, I hope? And is a 50 lb bag enough? Do I need to get some of your soil additive from getgills.com?
Size tank? Sand about 1lb per gallon, so I 50 lb bag for 55 gallon, provides about 2" sand cap on the eco. No need to do more. Just get 2" on the ecocomp[ete.
