    As a dancer myself, to me there’s a big difference between a choreographer and a teacher. A choreographer shows you the steps and then it’s your job to get it right. A teacher, on the other hand, is there to guide you through the process, motivate you and give you all the tools you need to succeed. On a show like Drag Race where every contestant has a different skill level, what the queens need is a teacher like Jamal or Alyssa, and not a choreographer like Todrick. Choreographers work better with profesionals.

    I think one of the absolute laziest choreography coaches in drag race herstory were the band Steps in UK3. Both the Queens reaction during the episode and several people I've seen were equally as baffled when they came out to the stage to rehearse and the only thing they did was say"Well, let's see what you got". Basically, they just stood there watching. I believe even some of the confessionals mentioned how the Queens thought they were gonna be guided through some of the choreo too.

      They were there for the promotion of the single they did with Michelle. Coincidentally the BBC had both Steps and Michelle on the Graham Norton show around the same time. Steps are not choreographers so it was weird to see them in that 'role'. It's the same with Katie Price being in the UKvsTW Snatch Game recently - the BBC has a series about her life currently broadcasting. Awkward shoehorning of people onto the show to cross-promote BBC output seems to be a standard now. 🖤

    One thing about Todrick that always stuck with me was when for Cher: The Rusical (or whatever they named that challenge from season 10), he inserted 2 of Beyonce's signature moves into the choreography for, if you haven't gathered from the name, a Cher-related challenge... where he also didn't include any clear and memorable "Cher-isms", they were almost all done by the queens. He seems to choreograph "for the twitter gays" as it were, instead of... you know... just choreographing something to make sense for the challenge.

    I have considered Todrick a bad coreographer two times in the show, in AS3 when he wouldn't give Thorgy any real steps, guidance or place for her to show up in the divas rusical and in S10 when he kept making Beyoncé references in a coreography for a Cher rusical which actually afected the queen's impersonation (the vixen in this case) while she was getting her critiques. So that is the only thing i could disagree.

    Jamal and Alyssa are great teachers. They know how to play with each queen’s strength and adapt the choreography to match their strength. Yanis, while a great dancer, isn’t a great teacher. Yanis is way too critical, sets the bar way too high, and brings them down when they don’t get it the first time(like when he shaded Rajah when she didn’t pick up the choreo right away), when you’re supposed to uplift and adapt to the strengths and weaknesses of your students. Todrick, to me, is alright, but he needs more guidance to be great

    • @julesczar2017
      @julesczar2017 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I do agree with almost all of what you are saying, in regards to how extra critical Yanis was with Rajah. During the episode he asked the girls if they had any dancing experience, only Brooklyn and Rajah stated they had background in dancing. Rajah told him she had a background in multiple dancing styles and Brooklyn said she was a professional ballet dancer. So by admitting you have experience and or expertise your putting yourself in a place where high expectations are placed. There were various other queens that were doing much worse but because they never claimed to have a dancing background there was low to no expectation of them (Silky and Scarlet). On the other end we have Brooklyn who was able to keep up which was expected because of her previous statement. So between these two ends we have Rajah where because she decided to hype herself up she put herself in a place where Yanis was expecting her to act like a experienced or professional dancer when she wasn’t or was simply rusty. As she later states that she had a gap of 15 year of her dancing consistently, but she doesn’t divulge this until she’s being dunked on which comes off as an excuse, she most likely wouldn’t have had this happen if she didn’t say anything about her dancing background but then she wouldn’t have gotten as much screen time as she did in this episode. Again I agree that Yanis wasn’t a good fit because he’s expecting a lot from a group who have different levels of dancing experience and he’s used to people who dance professionally and can keep with fast paces. And when queens can’t keep up he resorts to insult because I’m guessing that what he used to doing again to professional who deal with this type of “motivation” and are probably better at handling it. Just wanted to give a probable cause of why he is digging into Rajah more. Of course you can’t rule out that it’s a reality show it that it thrives off drama and it’s the editing.

    One comparison I'd like to bring up between Todrick and Jamal is how they handled queens who were "difficult": Jamal handled Yara quite calmly and professionally on AS6, while Todrick went down on Nina Bonina's level on S9. That alone is very telling on who knows how to de-escalate tense situations and level with the queens, and who is just there to bring drama.

    I’ve personally worked with Hollywood Jade and taken class from Yanis. Hollywood is a hard ass but only to bring out the best in performers. That’s why the girls (even the ones who aren’t dancers) continue to book him after the show for further work. I’ve seen it plenty of times off the show, he will go hard and ask you to go 100% and if you put in your all and it doesn’t work that way? He will modify it so you shine but he needs you to at least try first. On the topic of Yanis, he’s a talented choreographer and a horrible teacher. Just saying mean things that didn’t motivate anyone. Like I’m all for having a thick skin but also why don’t we create environments (especially educational ones) where thick skins aren’t needed? Also like it wasn’t like there was anything constructive to his insults, so it wasn’t even like “let me take this negative critique and learn from it” it was just negativity. His teaching style was very “this is the choreo” catch it or be left behind.

In cdr2 especially the choreographer Hollywood jade (?) looked personally offended when his choreo was executed on the stage, even tho a majority of the queens weren’t dancers and they only had a day (or maybe less than that) to rehearse.

    I think the best choreographers on the show, are the ones that actually listen to the queens and their concerns. Like adapting choreo for someone who maybe isn't the best dancer, rather than giving them something so beyond their skill level, that its just setting them up for failure from the word go. And of course actually taking care of queens who maybe need extra adaptions, due to injury or illness. As someone who suffers with chronic pain (like Yvie), I know I would have appreciated those small touches, without it being made a huge deal. I definitely think Alyssa and Jamal do this, and so well, and I appreciate it so much.

  • @19nmiller1
    @19nmiller1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    I completely agree with this video! The problem with trying to bring in choreographers from other backgrounds is their expectations. I know Hollywood Jade from Canadas Drag Race is a Broadway performer and choreographer, so I'm sure he came in with the same mindset that he has for his other jobs. The problem is, everyone on Broadway is a very skilled dancer who's in the show because they can keep up with complex choreo. Drag Race has queens of wildly different backgrounds, the winner of the competition could never have to do a highly choreographed dance in their day to day work. That's why I do have to give Jamal, Alyssa, and even Todrick praise because they know exactly what they're getting into. For outsiders such as Yanis and Hollywood Jade, they expect the queens to match their choreography no matter what. But those familiar with Drag Race know that they're working for the queens and adjust their expectations accordingly.

    Great video. Thank you Jack. I have been a competitive dancer for 18 years now; almost all of my 25 year life. I have so many thoughts about the dance challenges. It is so disheartening to watch some of the guest choreographers on these episodes.
    What makes a good dance teacher: A guide and expert who knows pedagogy, learning tools, tricks, things like that. A person who levels the playing field for all of their dancers. A person who never gives up on their students. A person who will stay at the studio until you get it right. A person who knows how to give a mix of positive and critical feedback. Jamal comes the closest to this in my opinion. Unlike some of the other guest choreographers, Jamal's presence on a dance challenge always makes me so happy and relieved. He's great

    Todrick for me has had very high high's purely in terms of his choreo like with Read U Wrote U and also Category Is but he's also had plenty of dull choreography that seemed to take less into account the challenge at hand being presented and more into shoving in a "signature style" of his that doesn't really mesh with the characterizations going into these girl group or rusical challenges. Compared to say Jamal who does seem to take into account the challenge and tries to match choreo to what's actually happening in the tone and lyrics of the challenge

    This is my favorite of your videos so far. Thank you for it. The creative elements of Drag Race are what I love most. I enjoy seeing people learn things they don't know and grow as artists and people. I wish they would show a lot more of that. In greater detail. Learning to sew. Challenges that test their makeup skills. Teach them some improv! Dance is one of my favorite things in the world and I am grateful they bring on professional choreographers and I love that you and others are talking about what makes a good choreographer and a good dance. I hope they bring Laganja on to develop a choreo. Both she and Alyssa work with children as well as do drag so they have a lot of cross-over skills that make them uniquely good at choreographing for Drag Race.

  • @jt4351
    @jt4351 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is awesome! Keep doing these. I'm a dancer and a drag race fan, and I had never even thought to compare the different styles. There's so much we can get into and these soundbites shed new light on those!
    And I love seeing these comments from fellow dancers. Personally, I think there needs to be balance. I went to a dance program where everything was "good job" all the time that made people feel like they were doing better than they were. Sure, it felt nice at the time, but doing summer intensive programs or auditioning just showed how we were not as far as we thought we were. On the flip side, the running joke about "ballet trauma" is very much real. We didn't grow from being torn down. Being encouraging and uplifting towards the queens while also being honest about how they look is the way to go. And I think Jamal, Todrick and Alyssa did that. Your choreo is only as good as the dancers' ability to execute it.

    I’ve choreographed a few competition routines for myself (I’m no professional though) and my number one rule is adjust if something isn’t working. If you can nail something simple then it’s going to look so much better than something that is complicated for complication sake and then done sloppily. Jamal has always worked within the girls abilities and adjusted his teaching style to how they learn best, it’s such a great way to teach.
