    I think it’s also worth mentioning that Willow has a chronic condition and production isn’t doing anything to make the sewing challenges easy for her. Kornbread had to get her a hot cup of water to help her regain feeling in her fingers. It makes me wonder how little they might’ve done to help Yvie when she was hurt. Production needs to be prepared for their queens with chronic conditions that they have no control over.

    Another thing I wish they took into account is disability. I was pretty shocked for exemple when Willow was struggling to open boxes and NO ONE HELPED THEM. Willow should had have scissors, they should have hand warmers available, and whatever else they need. I wonder how many disabled queen did not go on the show for health reasons.

      @@ellehenny9133 it comes to show how oblivious people are when it comes to disability accommodations. people generally don’t care you have a disability because they haven’t been personally impacted by it. when they are personally impacted by it, they are more likely to be empathetic. people don’t have empathy. even in spaces like these where it’s all about inclusion & acceptance. sometimes it’s how someone is taught rather than them actively being bigoted. it’s a cultural attitude we have towards disabled people. it’s sad. i experience the lack of accommodation & there’s nothing i can do if there’s no willingness that others want to learn & adapt

    One of the things I will criticize Eureka for is popularizing the "I'm a big girl but I can dance and move better than those skinny bitches!" archetype. She tried to challenge Latrice to a cartwheel off during the shooting of the Holiday Special, which Latrice and the other queens gave her shit for. Latrice has lipsynched multiple times, and won most of them, and she never had to do a split.

    • @jlbeeen
      @jlbeeen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I've seen some great live performances by local drag artists, and some of them can really turn out a show without doing any cartwheels, splits, or anything of the sort. If someone can dance and move, great, but don't try to force that on others who may not have practised and trained for it. Some moves need a lot of strength and preparation.

    • @thebumpercar1344
      @thebumpercar1344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @@jlbeeen : In particular, I'm worried about how Eureka's preferred movement style combines with her previous knee surgery and her weight. And, like, Sasha Velour won the lipsynch to the crown without doing a single split either, so we need to stop making stunts a requirement of a lipsynch.

  • @NerdySwede
    @NerdySwede 3 ปีที่แล้ว +619

    As a fat person I also want to point out that many contestant who were sent home were bigger queens. Not saying skinnier queens can't get injured (or older ones for that matter), but us bigger people have to be very careful when landing for example, not to put too much stress on our bodies. When I exercise I have to do low-impact training, because some things my knees just can't do. But with queens of every size being "forced" to do these dangerous stunts the risk of a more serious injury can be a reality, or when they are not taking their weight into account. Thinking of poor Ocean Aqua-Black on Canada's drag race who had to jump into a foam pit that was clearly too shallow for her.

I watched it live, could practically feel my own knee rotate out of its socket. That whole challenge was a nail biter for me. I was worried for all the girls. It's not enjoyable for me as a viewer thinking how anyone could get really injured. I don't think the cirque Soleil bs is necessary. Thank you for talking about this! Another thing that really bothered me about the show/ fandom that really bubbled up for me recently is the reaction people get for not wearing heels/ taking them off. I thought it was kind of obvious why Maddy morphosis was wearing flats in the first runway as she was crouch walking and heels would make that more dangerous and harder to walk but some people just got so mad about the flats. I understand that heels are seen as very feminine and can physically alter someone to look more feminine (i.e. elongated legs, blah blah) but being expected to dance and flip and split with those on has to cause an injury at some point and standing on stage for hours in heels would be torturous for me. I used to wear heels frequently as I'm a tiny woman who liked to be tall but it caused so much damage to my feet and now I only wear them on special occasions when I know I don't have to walk much (and also not have to walk much for several days after thanks to my fibromyalgia) and I'll always have some form of injury afterwards as I'm clumsy. I know you can get used to wearing them and learn to do tricks/ dance in them but that doesn't take away the risk of injury. Part of me also believes that if yvie wasn't wearing heels, her injury wouldn't be that bad but I don't fault her for wearing heels and am aware that she was probably used to doing that stunt in heels. There's also a lot of other injuries that happen during filming drag race that we don't know about that could be easily avoided if certain things were thought through safety-wise which sucks. There's also those attitudes of "beauty is pain" or "drag is pain" but that shouldn't come at the cost of your health and wellbeing in my opinion.

    • @formy52
      @formy52 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      100% agreed. I remember when Ginny Lemon from UK2 had to very awkwardly and publicly justify to the panel that they were wearing flats because of their fibromyalgia making heels rather painful and I just didn't see what the fuss was about. A good flat can really work in an outfit and I do wish that queens didn't have to feel as though wearing a flat was a bad thing. The whole Maddy thing really confused me, I can't imagine doing the position she was doing and wearing a heel at the same time, not to mention the flat was more period-specific.

    • @WoodlandT
      @WoodlandT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s like not wearing ice skates to ice skate because you can roll your ankle. Not everything is for everyone. If you can’t wear some firm of heel, drag race is not for you. Absolutely do drag. Drag is for everyone. But drag race is a very specific thing that most of us aren’t cut out for

    • @formy52
      @formy52 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@WoodlandT that's... what? I wasn't aware there was a drag rule book which stated at least a 5 inch heel must be worn. And frankly, if drag is defined by such strict rules as that I don't want to know, that feels incredibly restricting. Drag to me is freedom, not being bound by arbitrary edicts from on high.

Even if it wasn’t other queens job to help her because of the issue with her hands, what if she didn’t beg for scrap fabric? What if Production didn’t get thier cute little scavenger queen? What if Willow had tried too hard & hurt her hands trying to open a box!? Then she’d try to operate the sewing machine and boom, blood everywhere. They’d be down two queens in a week! Fans still keep thinking Drag race has an employment contract they dont - it is a GOD contract and you give up your right to sue. The only way you could sue is if they actually broke the law and causes serious disability or death eg equipment falling on you or the pushed you of a platform and you broke you neck, We have had over 20 years of reality TV and how many companies are sued - basically NONE as you sign a contract saying I wont hold you liable. So you can attempt to sue but you would not get anywhere. Fans dont understand the contract at all the think it is just about not talking about the show

So yes Dannie is right it may be foolhardy for someone with a disability to sign a reality TV contract where you risk injury. One challenge I would like to see back is the Pink Table Talk from All Stars 6. It was confortable for the queens but challenging at the same time because it required them a degree of sincerity we are not that used to, and since they set the boundaries of how much they want to reveal about themselves it does not come across as exploitative.

    The fact that jump splits are so normalized by this show too! I was an accredited dance instructor for seven years. Jump splits result in tons of knee, hip, and back injuries. They're actually very dangerous if you don't know the correct technique/alignment and don't actually have your splits. Yet, we see queens doing them all the time (or trying to, there's very few queens that have competed that actually know how to properly do even just a normal split).

    Injuries are one of the primary reasons I really hate it when queens get read for choosing to wear flats on the runway. There are all sorts of reasons for them to choose to wear flats but honestly, sometimes it's for practical reasons like reducing injuries during performances. I don't know why they get mad when they choose to kick off their shoes during lipsyncs, because if that's what you have to do to bring a good performance without breaking an ankle, then do it. I know I would. You just don't get the same footing in a heel that you do in a flat or barefeet.
    These girls are practically professional dancers and yet they're "not allowed" to wear flats to perform in, when most people wouldn't and don't bat an eyelash when actual professional dancers do.
    I'm just waiting for a girl to break her ankle so badly that when they bring her back for all stars, she has to go the entire season in flats because of an injury she got ON THEIR SHOW.
    Disclaimer: I'm not saying the flats shouldn't be cute or go with the outfit. Just like any shoes you choose to wear, they shouldn't be basic. I just don't agree that choosing to wear flats automatically puts you at a disadvantage.

    Thank you so much for reminding everyone how important safety is ! And mostly that the essence of drag performance is to make the audience feel emotions and embody truth in their craft ! I really think it’s the core of drag and wanting performers to always go on more and more dangerous paths for somebody’s entertainment isn’t healthy. Mostly I really couldn’t agree more with you saying that someone getting bored by « usual » drag performance « standards » (so to speak) is because they don’t understand what is drag at it’s essence, and getting amused by people doing dangerous stuff tells us that it maybe is time to look for the reason for that! Two things I’d add is
    1. Basically the entire cast on S9 picked up injuries in the cheerleading challenge. Peppermint in particular was hurt badly and I think they shut filming down for a few days to a week while everyone recovered/was treated.
    2. Kornbread’s situation was made worse by COVID. Kornbread said they rolled their ankle walking between the workroom stage to the runway stage. Just a random thing that could’ve happened to anyone. Basically stepped in a pothole outside. Before they even knew the severity of her injury tho she had to leave the show because to get it examined she had to leave the COVID bubble. After getting it looked at she would’ve had to leave the show anyways but the nature of the quarantine makes the risk that any injury this season could’ve led to someone going home.

  • @questzeidler2421
    @questzeidler2421 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    regarding the push for more, i do think production deserves a little bit more blame if only because the producers mold the show into what they think audiences want to see. if production believes that having challenges with more physical exertion, more stunts, and overall more risk of bodily harm will bring in more viewership and more word of mouth regarding the show, then that's what they're going to include. i'm not sure what the best way is to convince producers that this is not what the audience/fan base wants to see, and i'm a bit skeptical that they would even listen, but i do agree that it's worth being vocal about.
    one last thing: bob the drag queen mentioned that she had encountered a similar situation to victoria's knee slide and attributed it on how the runway is tiled. if that's true, then we can ultimately place more blame on production for victoria's injury, because it would be perfectly possible to provide a stage that is safer for these kinds of tricks.

    Let's not avoid the Eureka in the room: All of the queens whose injury took them to the doctor are obese. Obesity decreases their mobility, puts extra pressure on their joints - knees in particular which is why most of them had knee issues, decreases their stamina and increases fall damage due to excessive weight. Both production and the queens themselves have to be conscious about the fact that being severely over- or underweight in combination with high-energy movements is a recipe for disaster. Even if Eureka and Latrice have shown to be flexible enough to do the splits successfully, it is still a dangerous risk which must not be taken.

    Everything is always about doing one more thing. To win, to get more views, likes, whatever it is to succeed. And social media is not a friend to that. There’s a point where the things that are dangerous but doable, become dangerous and deadly. And I never want to see that happen.

    As someone with a similar condition to Yvie, that's why I'm hesitant to get into performance. And related to this, I know this was for Drag Race, but I think Dragula may have some blame with things being extreme. One of their contestants had burns due to a stunt that didn't go as planned, and then in one of the challenges, they brought out some stuff with fire again to show that they can face their fears. Then again, that's also the show that had people staple themselves as an extermination challenge, so I know that it's made to be extreme. But it still promotes a lot of extremes. Personally, if I were to get into drag and try and get on a show, I'd go for Camp Wannakiki, as there were some times that people weren't comfortable with stuff, and they accommodated it. It's also just such a silly and lighthearted show, which is a good break from the drama on other drag shows.

    • @nottheshirt483
      @nottheshirt483 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference is that that's what they signed up for, it's par for the course. There are quite a few drag artists that haven't auditioned because of the extreme exterminations, Andro Gin for example iirc. The queen you're referring to is Kendra Onixxx, I believe, and she worked with fire as part of her act, which is where she got into her accident OFF the show. Then she chose to bring out the fire in her Resurrection--it was her "ghost".
      Side note, if you really wanna perform, you should. You don't have to be a deathdrop splits kicks yas mawma performer to still be fierce on the stage, if that's any encouragement.

    Is there an argument to be made that going home from injury (to return the next season) is a good thing?
    1. It builds hype around a contestant. 2. They're able to raise their profile from the show but with an extra year to refine their craft. 3. It's an easy narrative for the next season. [Obviously, I don't want them getting hurt, but consider it a "glass half-full" argument]

    I mean, Charlie eliminated herself, but considering she was way older than the rest of the cast (and they made sure to remind the viewer of it constantly), I wouldn't be going around saying "oh I'm not doing that, its dangerous" or "oh, I think I'm injured", I wouldn't blame her for trying to keep up with the youngsters and then failing to do so. I just think the show and fans should've been more forgiving of her, considering she has a career that's as long as Ru's in drag.

    injuries and disabilities are a hard thing to consider when competing. with willow she dealt with it her whole life so she knew how to handle it, same with yvie and when you've lived with it then you know how your body works which means you know your bodies limits thus you know if you can or can't do something without hurting yourself. with an injury its random, unless you came in with a broken leg already, so you don't know if it'll happen. you can have the worst back and legs but you're gunna be like "i wanna win, lets see how this goes" then do a death drop then become paralyzed. i have a bad knee and if i kneel it will kind of pop out of the socket, idk why cuz i haven't gotten it looked at yet but it hurts to put it back, i have to straighten my leg out to do that, but because of that i know i wouldn't be able to do the cheerleading challenge and id say something about it. like i could do it i just couldn't kneel.
    to me eureaka took the risk and dealt with the consequences of it, with kornbread i think she just got unlucky.

    (Sorry it's gonna be quite long.)
    As a drag artist myself, I know I don't care a lot about my physical health because of the standards drag race has set up for our performances. I mean, for a lot of people who come to a drag show, their knowledge of drag is mostly reduced to drag race. RPDR is a show where drags are asked to perform with more stunts, reveals and surprises in order to win a lipsync for your life first, but most important the win the crown due to the smackdown format. We don't see performances made for the finalists anymore, where they can express all of the variety of their forming skills.
    We also don't have that much of emotional lipsyncs, such as Natural woman or And I am telling you, and that's unfortunate because when we perfom those kind of songs in a drag show, they are not that well received by the audience. I feel like people want more to be amazed, shocked, surprised, blown away, ans less to feel, cry, empath with a story.
    I wish we go back to the seasons 7 and 8 finale format, and we include in the show a bigger diversity of lipsync songs. I'm glad the girls group challenge for season 14 was a way to showcase a different vibe for the performances.
    About the queen injured in the show, I think ALL of them did or will benefit from their injury, in the aspect of the competition (i'm not talking about the health, the recovery, the money or else, just the competition itself).
    I don't think Eureka would have succeed in season 9 as much as she did in season 10, first because season 9 was way stronger than season 10, and also since her departure was so well received she could be pushed by the production as a fan favorite.
    By her injury, Yvie was able to show even more how resilient and resourceful she is, and embody even more the storyline of an underdog who thives under pressure.
    If she's asked back for UK4, Victoria will be able to resume her story of the first cis woman of the show but with even more spotlight since we are craving to see her compete.
    And kinda same for Kornbread, who I think wouldn't have succeed that much because, let's be real, even if her personality is gold, she was shown as not that good in acting challenge nor runways. With another year to prepare herself, transition more peacefully, and get readier for challenges and runways, I think she's more likely to destroy season 15 with more facilities. And actually, I think season 14 is maybe even better without her, in a way that her departure left such a void that it let everyone more space to blossom and reveal themselves, which is quite amazing.
    But enough about what I think, thank you so much for the video, for putting an emphasis on safety first. Let's hope your videoS will be watched by RPDR producers, because they are all so relevant and needed (especially the ones about Naomi and Elektra). THANK YOU.

      @@SheaMF Oh no, I think she's amazing! But she wasn't SHOWN as good in this challenge! There was a lot of editing in the super tease, in order to highlight or not some queens, and to save or not others (Maddy disappeared not to be high, Jorgeous not to be low, they kept all the mistakes from Alyssa, etc).
      What I meant is that she was shown as strong, and then in a different mental place where she loses focus, and injured herself. This is why I think she wouldn't have succeed as much as expected, kinda like Angeria who dominated the first half of the season and then is barely shown in the second half. Except that the decline was already happening for Kornbread, to me at least.
      But I was so hoping to see her in season 15, but I guess we won't get to be amazed by her talents, on drag race at least.

    I wonder what if eurekas injury was later in the season if she'd have been invited back, or if they'd be like, you made it pretty far anyway, ur good. Also you could probably talk about cynthia too even tho it wasn't an injury and she technically wasn't eliminated because of it.

    I love Kornbread as she was my frontrunner, but girl you know you injured your knee from falling off the table not from just walking 😭

    Rumours have said that Ru and Michelle are in the UK right now filming season 4, and Victoria hasn’t gone missing from social media, so the rumour is that Victoria has been cast for Canada Vs The World

    Great video! Now I'm wondering what would season 11 be like if Yvie did leave after her injury.

    even the more "tame" stunts queens pull such as, dips, splits, jumps, flips, etc. are also extremely dangerous depending on the performers experience! people need to calm down and stop demanding so much out of them.

    Another one could be Veronica Green from UK Season 2 who couldn't come back in the second half when they resumed filming due to her testing positive for Covid but was able to return as a cast member for Season 3 of UK Drag Race.
    It's good to see that these Queens that get eliminated due to injuries or medical reasons of any kind get to return to compete in the following season meaning they can get to resume their dream of competing on the show for the thing they love, that being Drag and the performance that it entails no matter if you are a straight person or AFAB or part of the LGBTQA+ community as it's great to see that there are people who love and respect the art form who want to do the thing they really enjoy.
    Hopefully Kornbread and Victoria Scone get to return for Season 15 and Season 4 respectively as I think a lot of fans will love to see them complete again and to go much further than they initially did on Season 14 and Season 3
