Not a reveal, a wardrobe malfunction sent by whatever higher power was present that day to give us an iconic moment. Also works only because it’s ChiChi and she knew exactly what she was doing. She was already outperforming Thorgy and despite not planning for the malfunction, she kept it pumping and capitalized on it instead of getting flustered by it. That’s the sign of a true performer. It’s a similar situation to Kylie’s fall into a slide in AS6. She could’ve Farrah Moan’d but instead flips the script in her favor.
I feel like a wardrobe malfunction like that can only be handled and elevated by a great performer. Chi Chi used that moment and ran with it. Actually in untucked there was a moment before chi chi went on stage where you can see her tuck the beads under her shoe. At least I think that’s what I saw.
@@Lola84794 We saw through out the season that ChiChi had difficulties with walking and dancing in gowns, I just watched that untucked scene and it actually might be that she's just putting her shoes back on. The beads aren't long enough to reach her heel when she's standing hence why they broke while she was getting up from kneeling in the lip-sync.
Sasha and Yvie have the best finale reveals for me. They were completely unexpected and both made me gasp when I first saw them (to this day, the rose petals still make me gasp everytime I watch it). I kinda hate that now days you can't go to a finale without expecting a reveal, kinda takes all the fun out of it (c'mon, you're wearing a whole contraption on you, of course there will be a reveal).

What really makes Roxxy’s second wig reveal iconic is that wig reveals weren’t really a thing-rather wig snatching was all too common and well-known for annoying the judges. Everyone thought Roxxy was about to snatch her wig (and in the worst possible song) and the reveal that she had gone so far as to have a second wig underneath shocked everyone
Sasha is a scientist. She even knows what lips to wear while doing a lip sync. Both looks were bright red lips that will always catch your attention. Her eyes! Her entire look was MADE SCIENTIFICALLY for her to win!!

One of the reasons Sasha's reveal was so powerful was because she's known as a bald queen, and in an emotional song and performance, when she lifted her wig, that itself had so much symbolism. Yvie revealing her braids, even Brooke during the semifinale where she ripped her shoe covers and revealed she was on point, the reveals felt true to them yet were still unexpected. It's so easy to make a reveal just for the sake of a reveal and lose your personality in it, because you focus more on the spectacle than yourself and your brand
A thing I want to add to Sasha's iconic lipsync is the iconography of the roses. Often times when I hear this song, I end up imagining red roses fluttering down, scattering and it feels breathtaking. It could just be my artistic side speaking but I don't think any other lipsync made me associate and resonate with such a vivid yet simplistic image in a performance. Taking off your wig or ripping off a skirt that’s shoddy or in the way and just dancing in your top and panties is not a reveal to me. Reveals and gimmicks shouldn’t be a must when it comes to a lip sync. Take it from Denali, she performed flawlessly and effortlessly, no reveal and it became the easily one of the most iconic lip syncs! It was just dance and 100% pure energetic fun.
Peppermints reveal is *quintessential* quick change. The platonic ideal even. You want to choreograph a farce and quick changes, you look at that goddess.
Pep can sell the simplest of reveals and I love that for her. Like, her Stronger costume by itself isn't anything to write home about, but you best believe that the second she came out of that twirl and clapped and shook her titties, I was there like OHMYGODPEPPERMINTILOVEYOU THIS IS COUTURE. I think reveals are akin to excessive or unnecessary acrobatics. When Serena did a ill-fitting split in her second lip sync and everyone (I think Alaska made the comment) was like, "oh wow, she did a split... So shocking". They're seen as gimmicky when there is no purpose or it doesn't keep rhythm with the song... Basically all queen's are giving their all to a performance, but a lacking reveal appears as a crutch to the audience, and thus, makes the rest of their performance seem lesser.
I think something that also needs to be touched upon is that neither Pep nor Sasha knew what song they'd be performing to until the boxes were opened - just that the songs would be "Stronger" and "Emotional". I think that Peppermint's reveal would have still worked if she had been lipsynching to "Emotional", but Sasha said in an interview that she had an entire different reveal ready in case she got "Stronger", involving a pair of scissors hidden somewhere in her costume.

One of my favorite reveals is Yvie's final lipsync reveal. She matched the energy pf the song, you didn't see it coming and it was timed perfectly + immediately after the reveal she did a stunt you didn't expect so the energy kept building. Also it's pretty understated since all she did was turn around.
my dream would be a queen "losing" her wig, showing her "real boy hair" and then taking it out revealing that its a wig of her hair and theres another prettier wig underneath
I'm so glad you teased the Shangela fatsuit thing. That stunt always bothered me due to the inconsistency of how weight and body type is dis-proportionally either loved or hated for crudeness.
The Roxxxy reveal had additional context. Ru HATED the girls taking off their wigs to reveal their boy hair so Roxxxy bluffed that she was going to do that too.
After Sasha's reveal it became trying so hard to replicate that moment, but Monet's final lipsync pussycat under a pussycat was genius! It was the most unexpected, right timed, meaningful to her persona (i am gonna wear it even if you don't like it) but also a sarcastic approach to all that REVEAL madness.
I always interpreted Sasha's as an homage to her mother and the whole "bald queen" persona, with her ending up being MORE sasha than when she started (no gloves and no wig)
Yes, timing and story are two of the aspects that made Sasha's reveals great. The build up was extraordinarily clever, the rose, the gloves perfectly timed with the music, and then the wig... and of course, the red rose being the symbol of love. One could say that the wig reveal was inevitable. We love stories, and she told one of love and despair.
sometimes i wish queens would just stop bothering w reveals n focused once n for all on giving a good performance. keep ur clothes on n focus on the lyrics of the song, the little pauses, the backup vocals; build the lip sync around those, create a story, make us connect w the songs emotions. thats what makes a good lip sync imo
This is such a great video! I would have added Yvie's Edge of Glory lip sync up there as one of the best too. It was 1) different to any other reveal we've seen. 2) Perfectly timed (imo) and 3) really freaking cool to boot! It's really amazing and was the cap off to what had already been a great performance up to that point.
One I'd include on here is Monet X Change's reveal on AS4's finale, when she's performing to Christina Aguilera's Stronger. She's already matching the energy of the song with her performance up to when she does the reveal, which is a reveal of a short, bob-haired wig under a very similar wig.. Her performance didn't specifically hinge on that reveal, it was built well and showcased at the right time, and it was a solid parody of wig reveals in that it went from one wig to a pretty similar-looking one.
I think a good reveal is done as part of what you are trying to convey with the performance. And like you say the timing it at the most effective part of the song to do so. It’s also really common for the outfit and reveal not really have anything to do with the song at all. Which makes it feel random, and less meaningful. And I understand why. I’m guessing they need to commission a elaborate reveal dress, and a matching wig, a lot sooner than when they know what lip sync songs they are gonna have. But look at Sashas reveal with the emotional lip sync. The reveals is just a couple of simple rose petals. All she needed to do was add a few rose petals in a pair of gloves and in a wig. It’s a very small and simple reveal really. But it’s highly themed and planned with the specific lip sync song in mind. And also has a progression/storytelling built into it. I think a less elaborate reveal, that is created quickly, but for the specific song they have. Is more likely to be successful. See with silky and in the allstars. She and the other lip syncing I believe would get to know the lipsync song a day or two in advance. Silky spent that time creating or adapting a outfit and a reveal to suit the song. She didn’t come with a suitcase full with already prepared reveals. As I understand it, she made more or less all of them in the spot in her hotel room, right before the lip sync. And I thought what she was able to crate in such a small time, was among the more effective reveals we have seen on the show.
Would have loved your breakdown of Yvie's finale "reveal" for Edge of Glory, which in my mind is the most expertly delivered reveal in all of Drag Race. Love the video all the same!
I overall just love Yvie's existence so I might be a little biased, but that finale reveal was subtle but incredible. The outfit, the concept was built around her unique body, how she could literally bend and twist her head to show front and back, the timing at the slow peak was perfect, the ballgown twirling in the final Chorus after showing off the head, just fantastic execution, and a great culmination of the criticism she recieved during the serious to lean more into glamour and elegance. Another subtle one, but I cannot get over how smooth that one wig switch Latrice had in the top 4 was.
I personally LOVED aquaria’s reveals at the finale, the sparks and confetti just fit with her frenetic energy and outfit and it was simple enough and fit with the music at the right moments and stuff!!
i'm also obsessed with the very fluid way she took off both the sequin cape-thing and the afro wig in one motion. i don't think the reveal would've worked as well if it hadn't been so (seemingly) effortless.

I would add Violet Chachki's "lookin' smart'n tartan" fall look as important, in that one pretty garment transformed into another, prettier, garment. Not just something taken off and thrown away.

I think you're so bang on! Even a decent reveal also needs A GOOD LIPSYNC to back it up! That's always what's missing! You can't rely on the reveal at all. The example you gave of Macho Man was 👌👌👌 FLAWLESS. I have to say, for anyone who likes reveals that work, y'all gotta check out Dragula. The performers have some incredible, jaw dropping reveals that tend to work pretty good as part of the floor shows they do! EDIT: I also just love you for sharing love for Peppermint and Silky! They're both so amazing and sometimes they really don't get the recognition they deserve, especially Silky.

reveals that didn't work: Alaska's Lil Poundcake look. was it a gag and a great look? yeah. but she revealed to it from a literal trash bag. no one read her for it but they read Alyssa for doing basically the same thing. it's been almost six years i'm still so pissed off. reveals being appropriately thematic is also super important. like part of me thinks that had butterflygate worked the way Asia imagined it could've been really cool...but then i remember they were performing "Nasty" and i wonder why in the hell Asia brought butterflies in for the performance of a sexy Janet song lol.
Roxxxy wore two wigs to create a great hairstyle. Only the bottom one was attached to her head. When she found out she would have to literally whip her hair, she took the top wig off, because she wouldn't have been able to whip it, it would have just flown away. Is what I think happened there.

Love your videos dude! Peridium is such a blast to listen to and you definitely have that vibe while also coming in on your own. I dont always agree with your points(like only bringing Asia O'hara up for 10 seconds when speaking of bad reveals), but its good to get different perspectives. I love that your doing the videos I would do if I did them. Keep it up!
In my head a lipsync follows the same rules as dance dance revolution or guitar hero, your moves and performance has to match the beat of the song, when you do it right you start earning points like you would on ddr, if your off sync or off beat then your not earning points or your earning less. A good reveal is like a combo multiplier, it multiplies all those points you earned during the performance, If you bust out a reveal after missing most of the beats them you dont have any points to multiply so the reveal does nothing. In the cases of roxxxy and shangela they use their reveals to build momentum and start the point’s gathering.

there was a really good example of a makeup/face reveal on dragula were sigourney beaver had a peeling face illusion. idk if it would work for main season drag race cause their shooting days are long but maybe for a finale lipsync
honestly the main thing that bugs me (haha) about asia’s reveal other than the obvious is that i have no idea what the butterflies would’ve added to either of the janet songs. both of those songs are sexy jams and i have no clue what butterflies have to do with either of them.

You couldn't see it on camera especially on a laptop screen shared with 2 other performers 2. It didn't match the energy, imagery or meaning of the song at all, and 3. Don't try so hard to kiss Ru's ass - both of Gigi's looks during the finale were 'in honour' of Ru and it came across as try-hard and not unique to Gigi

I'm so glad you teased the Shangela fatsuit thing. That stunt always bothered me due to the inconsistency of how weight and body type is dis-proportionally either loved or hated for crudeness.
The Roxxxy reveal had additional context. Ru HATED the girls taking off their wigs to reveal their boy hair so Roxxxy bluffed that she was going to do that too.
After Sasha's reveal it became trying so hard to replicate that moment, but Monet's final lipsync pussycat under a pussycat was genius! It was the most unexpected, right timed, meaningful to her persona (i am gonna wear it even if you don't like it) but also a sarcastic approach to all that REVEAL madness.
A word that can encompass the last few points: Musicality.
I always interpreted Sasha's as an homage to her mother and the whole "bald queen" persona, with her ending up being MORE sasha than when she started (no gloves and no wig)
Yvie's bow reveal in the finale was a showstopper, revealing a second face was so clever and it played into her flexibility so well
I kept having silky's AS6 performances in my head. She didn't get called for all stars for no reason. That queen can serve a gag!

Yes, timing and story are two of the aspects that made Sasha's reveals great. The build up was extraordinarily clever, the rose, the gloves perfectly timed with the music, and then the wig... and of course, the red rose being the symbol of love. One could say that the wig reveal was inevitable. We love stories, and she told one of love and despair.
sometimes i wish queens would just stop bothering w reveals n focused once n for all on giving a good performance. keep ur clothes on n focus on the lyrics of the song, the little pauses, the backup vocals; build the lip sync around those, create a story, make us connect w the songs emotions. thats what makes a good lip sync imo

This is such a great video! I would have added Yvie's Edge of Glory lip sync up there as one of the best too. It was 1) different to any other reveal we've seen. 2) Perfectly timed (imo) and 3) really freaking cool to boot! It's really amazing and was the cap off to what had already been a great performance up to that point.

One I'd include on here is Monet X Change's reveal on AS4's finale, when she's performing to Christina Aguilera's Stronger. She's already matching the energy of the song with her performance up to when she does the reveal, which is a reveal of a short, bob-haired wig under a very similar wig.. Her performance didn't specifically hinge on that reveal, it was built well and showcased at the right time, and it was a solid parody of wig reveals in that it went from one wig to a pretty similar-looking one.

I think a good reveal is done as part of what you are trying to convey with the performance.
And like you say the timing it at the most effective part of the song to do so.
It’s also really common for the outfit and reveal not really have anything to do with the song at all.
Which makes it feel random, and less meaningful.
And I understand why. I’m guessing they need to commission a elaborate reveal dress, and a matching wig, a lot sooner than when they know what lip sync songs they are gonna have.
But look at Sashas reveal with the emotional lip sync.
The reveals is just a couple of simple rose petals.
All she needed to do was add a few rose petals in a pair of gloves and in a wig.
It’s a very small and simple reveal really.
But it’s highly themed and planned with the specific lip sync song in mind.
And also has a progression/storytelling built into it.
I think a less elaborate reveal, that is created quickly, but for the specific song they have. Is more likely to be successful.
See with silky and in the allstars.
She and the other lip syncing I believe would get to know the lipsync song a day or two in advance.
Silky spent that time creating or adapting a outfit and a reveal to suit the song.
She didn’t come with a suitcase full with already prepared reveals. As I understand it, she made more or less all of them in the spot in her hotel room, right before the lip sync.
And I thought what she was able to crate in such a small time, was among the more effective reveals we have seen on the show.
Would have loved your breakdown of Yvie's finale "reveal" for Edge of Glory, which in my mind is the most expertly delivered reveal in all of Drag Race. Love the video all the same!

I overall just love Yvie's existence so I might be a little biased, but that finale reveal was subtle but incredible. The outfit, the concept was built around her unique body, how she could literally bend and twist her head to show front and back, the timing at the slow peak was perfect, the ballgown twirling in the final Chorus after showing off the head, just fantastic execution, and a great culmination of the criticism she recieved during the serious to lean more into glamour and elegance.
Another subtle one, but I cannot get over how smooth that one wig switch Latrice had in the top 4 was.
I personally LOVED aquaria’s reveals at the finale, the sparks and confetti just fit with her frenetic energy and outfit and it was simple enough and fit with the music at the right moments and stuff!!
Brooklyn's best reveal is probably her Afro Sequin look i mean her sequin look was kinda obvious, but the hair was unexpected
i'm also obsessed with the very fluid way she took off both the sequin cape-thing and the afro wig in one motion. i don't think the reveal would've worked as well if it hadn't been so (seemingly) effortless.

this was such a good analysis. another example of a reveal made at the beginning of the song but really worked was Maxi Shield mic reveal on Down Under. she completely won the lip sync the moment she did that.

I think you're so bang on! Even a decent reveal also needs A GOOD LIPSYNC to back it up! That's always what's missing! You can't rely on the reveal at all. The example you gave of Macho Man was 👌👌👌 FLAWLESS. I have to say, for anyone who likes reveals that work, y'all gotta check out Dragula. The performers have some incredible, jaw dropping reveals that tend to work pretty good as part of the floor shows they do! EDIT: I also just love you for sharing love for Peppermint and Silky! They're both so amazing and sometimes they really don't get the recognition they deserve, especially Silky.

Out of every queen in the franchise, which queen has the most reveals with the highest failure rate? It seems to me like Trinity the Tuck, with her S9 finale, AS4 lalaparuza, old woman, and finale.

reveals that didn't work: Alaska's Lil Poundcake look. was it a gag and a great look? yeah. but she revealed to it from a literal trash bag. no one read her for it but they read Alyssa for doing basically the same thing. it's been almost six years i'm still so pissed off.
reveals being appropriately thematic is also super important. like part of me thinks that had butterflygate worked the way Asia imagined it could've been really cool...but then i remember they were performing "Nasty" and i wonder why in the hell Asia brought butterflies in for the performance of a sexy Janet song lol.

Roxxxy wore two wigs to create a great hairstyle. Only the bottom one was attached to her head. When she found out she would have to literally whip her hair, she took the top wig off, because she wouldn't have been able to whip it, it would have just flown away. Is what I think happened there.
I've got an idea for a reveal.
1. Remove wig. Show man hair.
2. Wait for Rupaul to frown because YOU CAN'T REMOVE WIG DURING LIP SYNC.

Love your videos dude! Peridium is such a blast to listen to and you definitely have that vibe while also coming in on your own. I dont always agree with your points(like only bringing Asia O'hara up for 10 seconds when speaking of bad reveals), but its good to get different perspectives. I liked Trinity’s reveal but mostly because it was a pretty obvious reference to Rocky Horror.
In my head a lipsync follows the same rules as dance dance revolution or guitar hero, your moves and performance has to match the beat of the song, when you do it right you start earning points like you would on ddr, if your off sync or off beat then your not earning points or your earning less.
A good reveal is like a combo multiplier, it multiplies all those points you earned during the performance,
If you bust out a reveal after missing most of the beats them you dont have any points to multiply so the reveal does nothing.
In the cases of roxxxy and shangela they use their reveals to build momentum and start the point’s gathering.
Silkys Barbie girl reveal in all stars 6 was really good though.

Yeah! Logistically for drag race it would just be tough but for a club it could be pretty amazing
honestly the main thing that bugs me (haha) about asia’s reveal other than the obvious is that i have no idea what the butterflies would’ve added to either of the janet songs. both of those songs are sexy jams and i have no clue what butterflies have to do with either of them.

Gigi Goode's Dorothy from Wizard of Oz reveal is one of my least favourite in recent seasons because 1. You couldn't see it on camera especially on a laptop screen shared with 2 other performers 2. It didn't match the energy, imagery or meaning of the song at all, and 3. Don't try so hard to kiss Ru's ass - both of Gigi's looks during the finale were 'in honour' of Ru and it came across as try-hard and not unique to Gigi
