    I really enjoy the narrative you created to describe the way "resting" works in PF2e. I do have one thing to point out: You made the Sorcerer recover "+2" Focus Points, but the Refocus activity only restores 1 FP and can only be used if you have spent at least 1 FP since you last used it, so you can't just chain it to get all your points back between encounters.

      God... I wonder if that's just from now years of homebrewing that rule where it's that ingrained in my playstyle. But I've been under the impression that "Refocus" recharges all 3 slots in the 10 minute interval.
      Kinda makes me want to redo the TWO parts where I use that ruling and reupload. But I'll pin your comment for now as you are correct.

      @@scionicog I would probably correct it. Regaining 2 points at once typically falls around a 12th-level feat, and regaining 3 at once typically comes online level 16 or 18.

      @@scionicog yeah, it's still a great activity, just more prone to attrition tactics over the course of an adventuring day without the higher level class feats that regain more focus points.

      @@scionicog Just tossing in here for any other new players that at 2:32 that player would have the opportunity to continue their treat wounds medicine check for an hour to double the healing.

      I'm back to say: Damn, that Remaster changes for Refocus though. It's just 1 Feat now for all 3, but idk if that's Witch or all classes.
      And also:
      I still should've utilized the verbiage of the exploration action for a better narrative. I forget that you can tie refocus into what you are doing more than just "Meditation" or "Prayer".
      Druid using the Cantrip "Healing Plaster" to heal someone would proc a Refocus, at level 3 it offers a +1 on the check, and also offers RP potential for "Dirt in a Jar/Bag" as one of their reagents instead of just a ball of clay and meditation.
      "The deeds you need to perform are specified in the class or ability that gives you your focus spells. These deeds can usually overlap with other tasks that relate to the source of your focus spells. For instance, a cleric with focus spells from a good deity can usually Refocus while tending the wounds of their allies."

    The story you wove into the healing/searching/identifying time really made it feel real. Good way to ensure people ken the mechanic. :)

    My house rule: After almost any encounter, your first ten minutes you will not be disturbed unless your encounter was particularly riotous. After that, expect a flat check to represent the danger of a wandering monster or patrol finding your party while they take Exploration Activities.

    I loved the use of the 24 style transitions, and how the rogue is the stereotypical rogue that tries to hide all the plot for themselves.

    As someone coming from 5e and wanting to run a one-shot as my first PF2E game; thank you! I was having a hard time imaging what happens during this bit of play, and your walk-through "in game" was very helpful! Also LOL "split evenly cause the rogue is distracted"

      Glad I could help! I wish I had a "how to budget a fight" video, but that's a video for the future I suppose.
      Also, the Beginner's Box is a beautifully well crafted means of trying the system out! Highly recommend, you will have a ton of fun

    Our recovery after combat is normally way more chaotic.
    Its probably worth a cursory mention that you can get a range of feats to improve your 10min recovery actions.
    My group doesn't currently have a dedicated healer spellcaster, so our mundane healing has taken a significantly more important role then normal.

    • @scionicog
      @scionicog  ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured I'd explain it without the feats that can really optimize the downtime so people can see the RP potential. Some feats deserve their own videos, and "Continual Recovery" is one of those for sure.

  • @hammerspace8866
    @hammerspace8866 ปีที่แล้ว

    A nice narative for a short rest. at higher level medicine feats can allow the healer to treat the entire party at once and reduce the time that the medicine check can be used again to 10 mins.
    Also note that some classes might have access to focus spells that can heal, so they could do a refocus and cast that healing spell every 10 mins.(champions, lay on hands, Druis good berry, bard can get soothing balad at level 14.
    So higher level medicine checks and certain focus spells kinda trivializes healing for short rests.
    In our group short resting is usually handwaved as: you heal up and you may make some rolls to see if you find any loot or other interesting stuff.

      Every group I run, all four of them, has multiple people trained in Medicine. It's almost to the point I will house rule every PC is trained in Medicine at Chargen; if something gives you Medicine, it's a free pick. With skill feats like Ward Medic, Battle Medicine, and Continual Recovery, it's just too good.

  • @Akeche

    The main problem here is, where are the wandering creatures? Obviously in the Beginner Box it intentionally calls out THAT specific adventure lacks them. But I'd argue any adventure worth its salt will have few times when you can spend an hour and a half on healing without getting yourself into a defensible room... which that one was not, having multiple doors leading into different places.

    • @scionicog
      @scionicog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, there could be a wandering pack of... things... to worry about.
      But as per the giant-spider and rubble in some areas alongside the cobwebs, the building is abandoned and has residents that may be more ambush-style hunters instead of roaming predators.
      If the spider had a caretaker of sorts that was humanoid, it'd be a solo roam, could stealth and see that their pet is dead, and lay traps in advance. To which 1 door was already trapped.
      And the other door could've been locked, which can be picked of course, but if I as a Rogue had to choose between locked door and already unlocked door, I'm taking the easier route for now unless I know a patrolling guard exists.
      But realistically, I created a quick map with extra rooms and an encounter (PC level +2, so CR7) in a tight room that was entirely focused on revealing the downtime stuff Players could expect to do/accomplish.
      Whether or not the DM/GM wanted to let them recuperate is particular to their playstyle, and would've made this video even longer (to which I was already trying to avoid 2+ hours of Exploration for multiple med checks)

    @carloscaro9121 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Several points:
    1. These are not downtime. Downtime is a system where you spend days doing stuff to further your interests, such as crafting, earning an income, etc. It's the third leg of Pathfinder. You're describing Exploration Mode, the second leg. The first leg is Encounter Mode.
    2. "Short rest" is a specific D&D thing; the term should simply not be used. For example, you won't "Short Rest" in Cyberpunk, World of Darkness, Sentinel Roleplaying, Icons, WFRP, Wrath and Glory, KULT, Blades in the Dark, Shadowrun...I'll stop belaboring the point.
    3. To refocus, you must not have refocused since you last spent a focus point. You can only go to one more focus point than you currently have by refocus. Example, my level 3 Bard with 2 Focus Points can spend 1 in an encounter, then refocus and get it back. If the bard spends 2 points, they can regain one and that's it. They have to spend a focus point to refocus again. High level powers let you get back more than one focus point.
    4. You only take ten minute chunks for things like casting one spell of Detect Magic when using the Detect Magic Exploration Mode activity. If they are using it just twice, you would be using few enough actions that it should be done in Encounter Mode. You use the Detect Magic Exploration Mode activity when you're moving over a half mile in 10 minutes, searching for magic the whole way. Similarly, dealing with a trap is done in a few actions, as the two-action Disable a Device Encounter use of the Thievery Skill. I would argue merely identifying the language would be a Recall Knowledge action, which is again one action in Encounter Mode. Decipher Writing, taking 1 minute per page, would be if they tried to muddle through the Jotun.
    5. Exploration Mode is relatively free-form; you don't need to rigorously state everyone has a ten minute turn.

    • @scionicog
      @scionicog  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most of my videos are to help explain PF2e to those who are coming from other systems, and while yes it is "Exploration" instead of a "Short Rest", a LOT of my friends from 5e still use the term "Short Rest" regardless of which system they play.
      Thus, it's an easy term that the majority of non-PF2e players will understand, and why I call it, and name it, as such.
      But, I appreciate the comments, and really like some of your house rules!

    • @Akeche
      @Akeche ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scionicog Except... nothing he stated was a "house" rule, they're Rules as Written in the book. I think that's Carlos' main complaint. As for term usage, it can be good for Baby's First Explanation, but after that you gotta begin shifting over to the real deal.
