  • 2000 Mercury sable power steering pressure hose repair. In this video I use a 00 beveled washer to stop a leaking power steering hose. This covers power steering hoses for 98 - 06 Mercury and ford vehicles. This repair will work on all ford power steering hoses that use the Teflon seal.

    Thanks you for the help. I went and got the 00 washer from Home Depot in the pluming area but I made the mistake of installing the washers with the bevel facing away from the pump. I ruined two washers then I went back to your video and this time I installed the washer the way u are showing it and it worked. Lesson learned, pay attention and follow the instructions of the pros.

    Great job Kev. I just used this on my sable, and it worked! I was a little skeptical, and that hose fitting location is a NIGHTMARE to access, W/O a proper crows foot, and it still is a PITA, but it beat removing the entire hose. Clever idea, and thanks for sharing. You deserve an award for this.

      Well, the leak is fixed. Now the power assist isn't there. Fluid is top off, and drove it a little bit. Strictly manual. Wonder if the washer is blocking the hi-pres side. Great, now to pull it back out. :(

    This Ford design is a disgrace. It’s still being used all over Ford cars, sold in the U.K., and it still leaks where the pipe passes through the retaking bolt, and costs a fortune to replace. There is absolutely no need to incorporate an internal locking “snap ring” to prevent a new bolt being fitted.
    Fortunately I accidentally found a new hose in the scrap yard for my Transit. The solution in this video is excellent.

    Just FYI, ford sells a new nut and o-ring. F5RZ-3R608B, like $10 bucks. On my Lincoln continental there was port that was blocked by the washer. Anyway you can press out the leaking fitting by tightening down the fitting into the unmodified o-ring. A snap ring holds it in place. My PS pump had an O-ring in the bag that fit just fine in the groove in the fitting, I'm sure you can get one too. If not you can get the part above, screw it in almost all the way, clean up the tube and push/snap it in. If you tighten to hard against the oring you risk pushing the fitting out of the snap ring. That was my experience on the continental.

      alb12345672 - I'm a little confused, does the old fitting have to be cut off or can it be "pressed off"? Not sure what you meant about tightening it onto an unmodified o-ring.

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The OP says he was able to use "only" this washer, and it sealed his leak. It sealed my leak too, but blocked off a port in the original nut, so I had no power assist. Ford sells a replacement nut, with all the pertainant o-rings installed in it, that is used, once you "cut off" your leaky nut. It was mentioned by a responder down below somewhere.

    I actually had it in the shop 3 days ago for a power steering leak, this repair is still sealed the new leak was coming from the high side pressure switch down behind the engine. Also I used approved power steering fluid. Thanks for asking that question.

    Do not refrain from using a baster(used in baking a turkey) with a hose attached to it.If you don't fluid goes all over the environment below it.
    Learned this the hard way.
    If it leaks again,try tightening it a bit more.

    Tried this on a 2005 ford freestyle but couldn't get it to work.
    Tried two different washers each time beveled them slightly different.
    Sure wished it would have worked for me since the cheapest line I could find was 200 bucks.
    Deff worth a shot though for the price of a washer.

    Going to be trying this on a V8 conti in a day or so. Replaced a leaking pump(from the weep hole), had stop leak in leaky pump, now the fitting on the pump leaks down the tube. I bet taking it off destroyed the crappy internal o-rings, or the stop leak masked it. Hoses are cheap but there are two - if I replace the pump hose I'll probably destroy the seal in the second hose. Only way to get out the second hose is to drop the engine and subframe :(.

    • @itskevnow
      @itskevnow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have air in your power steering system somewhere that usually happens because you have a leak somewhere. A lot of times the leak is at that hose connection that you see me repair in this video when you put power steering fluid in your reservoir turn your steering wheel slowly from left to right make sure you turn your steering wheel as far left and as far right as you can you will see air bubbles in your reservoir that's the air coming, you have to get all the air out. Let me know if this helps

      @michaelhaas2210 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is great! I will try this tomorrow. Do you happen to have any instructional material on how to remove the power steering pump?

    • @itskevnow
      @itskevnow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juan Fuentes I don't have a video on removing the power steering pump, you need to move the coolant reservoir and the power steering reservoir. you can access the mounting bolts for the pump through the holes in the pulley. also remove the supply hose coming from the reservoir to the pump. once you have done that you can turn the pump to access the pressure hose with an 18mm wrench. I hope this helps.

  • @joequillun7790
    @joequillun7790 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kevin, our cars are exact, and the washer (although it quit leaking) prevented oil from flowing through the nut. Which meant...no power assist. I had to re-do the whole job, remove the washer, and install a Ford replacement nut (sealed fitting) as alb12345672 described below in this column. Don't know how or why your steering wasn't affected by your washer.

    • @itskevnow
      @itskevnow  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      joe quinlan sorry to hear that, I have not had a leak since doing this repair!

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I said, it didn't leak, but the washer covered a small port located "off-center, inside the pumps port. The passageway is actually drilled where the threads are. Weird. It prevented oil from flowing inside there. I don't understand why yours wasn't blocked also, preventing power assist.

      Thanks, I just finished the whole job on a 98 Ford Taurus 3.0 duratec DOHC with the same engine. The seal I used was neoprene, which became elastic after the seal heated up, (Tiny air bubbles were apparent in the reservoir.) I tightened the hose nut with an 11/16 wrench that I had filed down until it was a nice fit over the hose end. (after I installed the unit i needed a stubby wrench to fit between the wiring assembly and the compression nut.) The leaking stopped after the power steering pump was changed out.
