That was what I thought they had originally said and were sticking to as well but now I’m seeing articles that say it is a combination of puppetry and cgi :-/
apparently they are just using a minimum amount of CGI to hide the puppeteers.. probably more of a image compositing style of CGI, where they take the background from an earlier frame and overlay it onto later frames to hide any protruding puppeteer bodyparts. i wouldn't be surprised if some of the background 'matte paintings' have a few CGI tweaks to make them less obviously paintings.
I am sure everyone notices BAD CGI these days (remember Hobbit?), but a perfect combination of CGI and actual props, costumes or in this case puppets is definitely a win.

I hope Brian Froud plays a huge role in this. His artwork and creature designs are what inspired Jim all those years ago and you can really see it in this video. I speak for all the *true fans* when i say that we are very excited and hope for the best.

When the sequel fell apart because the director left saying "Nobody gave a shit about what Jim Henson wanted", I actually breathed a sigh of relief. This thing apparently has Henson hands all over it. That's reassuring.

My brother and I often make that reference too! That one skeksis (spelling? omg it has been so long!) is the most memorable with his whiny "mmmmmmmmm." Also, South Park made a reference to Dark Crystal in the episode "Tsst" with a brief glimpse of a "Nanny Skeksis" which of course was a skeksis. I loved that. I look forward to seeing this show and seeing more of the Dark Crystal world and more skekses! (with an "e" for plural. I assume you use an "e" for plural)
bliglum Netflix has a 6 billion dollar budget just in their licencing THIS YEAR ALONE. That out competes every competitor and Netflix is consistently coming out with high popularity shows that continue to grow netflix's consumer base. If Netflix continues to make good shows and continuesly expand their budget for other tv shows and movies, there is no way Netflix could possibly even come close to falling in second place.
Idk what it is but i feel like these practical effects worlds are so much better than cgi. Like they feel like an actual tangible place that you can go to. Its just like the original star wars and how that was so special

I would like to add that I personally have only seen clips of it myself, I recall reading some of the published material as well as seeing both the Odd1sOut video and the Robot Chicken spoof. I look forward to seeing this as from what I've been told before and why I avoided the film for such a long time (while being a huge Jim Henson fan) was simply that it was a vast world and it would take more than the movie to be properly invested and/or understand, so I skipped it. With the notion of this being a on-going series, I feel that it will be a much better way to handle the world building needed for a visual medium with a rich tapestry such as the Dark Crystal. Ken Hawk It's not about not using CGI, it's more about knowing WHEN to use it and HOW. The last mad max it's a perfect example of perfect combination of practical effects and CGI, the good thing is were you can't draw the line on where one ends and the other starts
*_filmmaker should use CGI if they need it and not just cause they CAN._* *_CGI will be used when it's needed, and no doubt it will look good._* The original didn't need it and looks gorgeous, even by today's standards.
Henson is one of the men who made modern CG possible. He and Lucas pushed special effects like no one else. CG is a viable tool...but one that can easily be over used true enough. Blending CG and Practical is always the best course.

All... my... YES! This was such a huge part of my childhood. I have never been so excited for a series. That fabulous score never left my heart and to hear it again in a new Story by the Henson team is a dream come true.
I'm 41 now and I bought the Dark Crystal last week and watched it and I still enjoyed it as much as a kid. These kind of films made my younger years magical and took my imagination to all new levels. Really look forward to the new one👏🏻👏🏻
I grew up watching this movie in a 3rd world country, we were so poor then that it took me to a different place, so every time it came on I watched it, on a black and white tv and I'm 34 now. It brings back lots of memories. Anyway that's cool.

What an ignorant statement. I can guarantee you that all your favorite movies made after 1990 used computer graphics in some way or another. You say it like it's something only used on monsters and creatures such as the ones seen in star wars. But you have no idea how much work goes into cleaning up a set or making a 1960s city look believable. In the case of going back in time in movies, countless of hours are spent making sure that people like you get to enjoy the movie in 2017. I really hope you can realize that what you call 'CGI', which is in fact called CG, is used for more that making Jar Jar Binks. Besides, the truth is that we only see bad effects because those are the ones that we notice don't fit in. You never took a second look at lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump to see if he really had lost his legs, or if Tom Hanks was really that good at ping pong. Grow some brain and enjoy a damn movie.

It will probably be in there in time for the series release. I found it odd that suddenly the soundtrack got a vinyl re-release about a month or two ago. Maybe not so odd after all....
Fun Fact: The scene with Skektek at the very end is in fact from an early test they were doing to see how well puppetry would go against CGI animation, in that respect the Gelfling was fully CGI animated. It was this test that ultimately pushed the crew in the direction of using full puppetry while using cgi for small enhancements and more advanced movements.

Yeah i am 33 as well and i remember my mum showed me that movie when i was a kid. At first i was like what, a puppet film are you ok? But that movie was brilliant. I even bought it on Bluray a few years ago. Such a masterpiece.
Finally a company that are sticking to the old ways! I was getting so depressed in that all of these movies werent using any kind of animation puppetry, so excited to see this, its been a long time coming and I hope they do more.
They probably weren’t expecting all the work that goes into doing what seems to be puppetry and practical effects rather then cgi( which is great cgi wouldn’t look as good imo) and, if I’m not mistaken they didn’t begin filming till November. But I could very well be wrong

That out competes every competitor and Netflix is consistently coming out with high popularity shows that continue to grow netflix's consumer base. So here's something that makes me sad: A mini-flame war has started in the comment section because some of these people came here from TheOdd1sOut, and naturally, people are getting annoyed. And both sides are firing back, some insulting the guy, others saying that it doesn't matter, some trying to resolve the conflict and so on.
I don't care where you came from. If you found out about this from James, then like he said, it's never been a better time to join the Dark Crystal fandom. If you came here from knowing the movir from childhood, congratulations, Jim Henson's master puppet work has returned. If you don't know either, do your research on them.
But don't start screaming at each other because someone said something. I fully understand, Dark Crystal buffs, why the "Who came here from the Odd1sOut" comments would get annoying. But think about it this way: These are probably people who wouldn't have batted an eye for this announcement if it weren't for him. While the comments can be infuriating, these people might even watch the movie, buy the books, watch this nee series, all thanks to that one guy. I checked the video---he evenbsaid that it was thr best possible time to get into the Dark Crystal community.

I would like to add that I personally have only seen clips of it myself, I recall reading some of the published material as well as seeing both the Odd1sOut video and the Robot Chicken spoof. I look forward to seeing this as from what I've been told before and why I avoided the film for such a long time (while being a huge Jim Henson fan) was simply that it was a vast world and it would take more than the movie to be properly invested and/or understand, so I skipped it. With the notion of this being a on-going series, I feel that it will be a much better way to handle the world building needed for a visual medium with a rich tapestry such as the Dark Crystal.

Ken Hawk It's not about not using CGI, it's more about knowing WHEN to use it and HOW. The last mad max it's a perfect example of perfect combination of practical effects and CGI, the good thing is were you can't draw the line on where one ends and the other starts

Henson is one of the men who made modern CG possible. He and Lucas pushed special effects like no one else. CG is a viable tool...but one that can easily be over used true enough. Blending CG and Practical is always the best course.

I grew up watching this movie in a 3rd world country, we were so poor then that it took me to a different place, so every time it came on I watched it, on a black and white tv and I'm 34 now. It brings back lots of memories. Anyway that's cool.

I don't mind a mix. But as homage to fans and to Jim Henson himself, having the characters as animatronics/puppets would be my preference. Backgrounds are maybe dependant on the scene.
What an ignorant statement. I can guarantee you that all your favorite movies made after 1990 used computer graphics in some way or another. You say it like it's something only used on monsters and creatures such as the ones seen in star wars. But you have no idea how much work goes into cleaning up a set or making a 1960s city look believable. In the case of going back in time in movies, countless of hours are spent making sure that people like you get to enjoy the movie in 2017. I really hope you can realize that what you call 'CGI', which is in fact called CG, is used for more that making Jar Jar Binks. Besides, the truth is that we only see bad effects because those are the ones that we notice don't fit in. You never took a second look at lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump to see if he really had lost his legs, or if Tom Hanks was really that good at ping pong. Grow some brain and enjoy a damn movie.

Fun Fact: The scene with Skektek at the very end is in fact from an early test they were doing to see how well puppetry would go against CGI animation, in that respect the Gelfling was fully CGI animated. It was this test that ultimately pushed the crew in the direction of using full puppetry while using cgi for small enhancements and more advanced movements.

They probably weren’t expecting all the work that goes into doing what seems to be puppetry and practical effects rather then cgi( which is great cgi wouldn’t look as good imo) and, if I’m not mistaken they didn’t begin filming till November. But I could very well be wrong
