    This is a great method. The problem for me is that the algae still comes back. I saw other videos about a product called Pool RX you keep in your skimmer. Supposedly this stuff is a miracle worker and keeps the algae out saving you all of this work and trouble.
    I just ordered. Hopefully it’s as good as they say.

      Thanks for your comment. I don't use anything in my pool except for chlorine and muriatic acid and I'm able to keep it looking fine. Pool RX uses copper mainly to battle algae. I had something similar years ago (Nature2) but I could not notice the results from it so I never continued with it. I did try Borates once to help with ph/acid demand, but after a year I didn't continue with that either. So I'm convinced it's just Chlorine/Muriatic acid for me. I wish you the best!

    So we just bought a home. The algae seems bad since it's starting to go up the wall. my husband wants to drain the pool that way we can scrub properly and get rid of it. what do you reccomend?

    • @ApacheRanch
      @ApacheRanch  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Green/Yellow algae on the walls won’t require you to drain the pool. My ideal spring method to get everything cleaned up is this: Clean the filter. Then use muriatic acid to get your Total Alkalinity within limits. Then with TA and pH in balance, hit it with a couple gallons of liquid chlorine and brush your walls. Run your filter at a higher speed if possible. After a couple days touch up with more chlorine as needed. Most likely it’s looking a lot better already.
      Algae is a never ending event with pool care. It’s your main sign that you have let something go to far out of balance (TA, zero’d chlorine levels, or CYA too high). It’s an easy fix with addressing the balance of these areas.
      Black algae doesn’t typically cling on the walls. Usually the bottom. Address that with scrubbing and then granular chlorine (cal hypo) spread right on top of it. Boom gone. Seeing black algae is just another sign of chlorine being zero’d out for too long.

    Thanks for this! Going to try this weekend. Does that product increase CYA levels? Or is it just chlorine?

    • @ApacheRanch
      @ApacheRanch  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It’s calcium hypochlorite. It does not contain stabilizer. So it will not affect your CYA levels.

      @ApacheRanch your method actually worked! I sprinkled some on the black algae and it disappeared super fast within 10 minutes. Thank you! Also my calcium hardness is 400, how should I lower it?

    • @ApacheRanch
      @ApacheRanch  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @ducluu7366 the only way to lower calcium levels is to drain and refill water that has less calcium in it. Honestly, it’s not something you really have to worry about things like hardness and calcium are often out of your control due to your water supply.

    Will this be okay on a fiberglass pool??

    • @ApacheRanch
      @ApacheRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but dilute the acid to protect the gelcoat on your pool. You want to be much more conservative when using acid in a fiberglass pool.

    Does the chlorine stain or discolor a quartz plaster pool ( Blue )?

    • @ApacheRanch
      @ApacheRanch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Your results may vary" - it's certainly possible. I would do a small test first. My last pool was a grey colored plaster that resulted in a deep-blue water color. I never used any Cal Hypo to avoid possibly impacting the color. I would use a LOT of liquid chlorine and a LOT of scrubbing with the wire brush instead. After a few years that pool's plaster marbleized and then light colored patterns started to emerge from the plaster. At that point I started to use Cal Hypo for issues like black algae and I did not notice any more significant change in the plaster. I think in small amounts it would be OK. On my current pebble tech pool, I have noticed no changes in color at all. I wish you the best!

    That’s also a hollow spot that needs to be chipped out and whole pool refinished

    • @ApacheRanch
      @ApacheRanch  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hollow spot? Not sure what you mean. The pool finish has been fine in the year since the video. I don’t expect any maintenance on this finish for another 10 years.

    Question, can I use both trichlor tabs as well as pool r/x in my pool?
    Trichlor tabs to increase my CYA levels and pool r/x to kill/prevent algae?

    • @ApacheRanch
      @ApacheRanch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do that. Pool RX is not enough to sanitize your pool. It’s mainly copper which algae doesn’t like to grow in. But it won’t kill bacteria. So you have to have chlorine and TriChlor would suffice for that. Once you get your CYA level where you want it (50) I’d switch to liquid chlorine so you don’t overdo the CYA in your pool. Thanks for your question. I wish you the best.

      Here’s an approach to this problem:
      1. Caps lock off
      2. Don’t ignore algae so it gets to that point (growing on the sides)
      3. Elevate your chlorine level in the water VERY high (caps for emphasis)
      4. Scrub with wire brush
      5. Repeat #1-5 until it’s gone.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for your comment.
