Although that is a worm drive, there is of course a differential in there.
The advantage with a worm drive is that it should be quiet in operation. The disadvantage is that it’s not very efficient, and saps power, due to high frictional loads.

That worm drive rear end is very odd indeed. Totally unexpected and brings back the days of my first erector set with a motor and learning about gears, starting off with the worm drive like this on a little "car". What an interesting automobile, like all the rest. I love these videos and always look forward to daily new or old 2stroketurbo recommendations.
By the way, I love how the lining on drum brake shoes are redone and especially how they are adjusted. I melted with amazement when you finally explained it's complicated simplicity. Those eccentrics are quite eccentric!

Buick and Ford Model T trucks also used worm drive differentials in the old days. There IS a differential above the worm. Peugeot used the worm drives until about 1967. They were robust, they won the East African Rally (1000 miles over dirt roads) so many times they got the nickname "The African Queen".

Excellent esoteric French brake theory and design class.

Those old Peugeot ended up everywhere in world, specially in the former colonies like indochin. The only pug I had was a 504ti owned many years.

Extra brake shoe surface area won't improve the stopping distance. It will however spread the heat over a wider area and so improve recovery between stops.
Also, there is a differential, just worm driven from the bottom rather than via a hypoid bevel pinion.

Looks great- I'd agree with your estimate of 40% increase in surface area.
I'd think it's going to stop pretty good now, & going by previous views of the old shoes, it's been quite a while since it did so.
Good on you sir, for making the time to meet the customers needs! Most places just say, we can't help you.

Great to hear that you found a brake shoe relining outfit! I admire your persistence in keeping these oddball old dears on he road!
Was the reliner local, or did you have to ship them out?

The French always think different, when it comes to their cars. Very interesting.

It looks like the exhaust is sitting on the rear axle. I don´t know if that is correct.

It is a lot of corrosion on this old lady. Why not spray and treat her when she is on the lift?😮😊
