I applaud your naiveness, I was also in my twenties once. But I regret to tell you that even if the whole world watched this speech, it really wouldn't make much of a difference. Someone once said "Those who don't know their history are destined to repeat it" , but the truth is that the only thing that history has proven is that it keeps repeating itself. If knowing had any weight on the outcome of events, there would be no more wars, slavery, dictators, inequality, hunger, etc. all of which are exacerbated in present times. The only meaningful thing to learn about history, is its insight into our own human nature, that we are basically hairless chimps that are utterly incapable of handling a spoonful of power, that we lose all sense of respect, empathy and love in our pursuit of such power, and when we finally get a firm grip on a big chunk of it, we literally become the most dangerous and insatiable beast on the surface of this beautiful planet. The world we see is a reflection of who we are as a race, we are the world.
Agreed. Just don't give it at an obscure college in Illinois where parents want to hear uplifting themes, not be buried in the reality of end-stage Capitalism and our imperialistic horror show. (See Rockford College). That was just SO WRONG! There is a time and a place.
Love how he put the film “Lincoln” on blast for its revisionist history in leaving out Frederick Douglas’s contribution, how he pushed Abe to end slavery. Bravo to Chris for calling this out and for NOT watching Hollywood’s grotesque “hollywood splaining” of this country’s history..
An honest, true human being, expressing the disgust all true humans feel at the unjust degradation of humanity we see around us, only an anti human could scoff at such pain.
The power of unity for a just cause bring's about change. Force the war monger's from making and spending billions on killings and create green jobs etc to heal the planet and the life of the masses, surely a much better activity than killing the masses and planet.
Absolutely terrifying truths revealed as only honorable Chris Hedges can tell in such a powerful and compelling historical correlation. Thank you Chris.
"It is in the male experience of pleasure that one finds the meaning of male history.” This is beautifully put, and right on point. Mr. Hedges thank you! Your words and ideals are hard to take in a single sitting for me. I have to repeat the experience a few times to be able to understand the horror that is man! It shocks me; it horrifies me, even after seeing War in the service of my country. Men, women, and even small girls and boys burned alive! AS I was told this is your duty for the liberty of the world!
I do hope that our lives and struggles are being documented, and that history will condemn the brutal force of the Empire , the oligarchs, the banks, the Media and finally the Military, that wreaked havoc in the world , all under the guise of Democracy.
Every word of his, a stab in my heart. Every word, the sound of truth, and the heartbreaking beauty of a poem too truthful. A mirror pushed up to us for us to see who we truly are. When will we, human being as one, will wake up from all the mental illness, endless greed and cruelty? Chris, conscience of our time.
👌🏻👌🏽👌 You quite right about naming this speech of his A POEM. Its literary quality - or should I say its perfectly balanced lyricism - definitely contributes making it so remarkably powerful.
Woke me up! 20 years ago I heard your lecture. My hospital job started doing those things you spoke about; changing our benefits, denying our benifits if late on payments, the low morale of the lower paid workers, no respect for each other, hostile environment, weak management, assaultive behavior, etc.
What saddens me the most is that the only reason he is allowed to say this stuff is that the powers that be dont feel threatened in any way shape or form. Those who can afford it need to teach their children survival tactics. No help is coming. We all need to acknowledge that.
"What saddens me the most is that the only reason he is allowed to say this stuff is that the powers that be dont feel threatened in any way shape or form." This is a great point. Chris had better be careful. I notice he's becoming a bit more charismatic lately. Americans are allowed to speak truth to power like this publicly as long as they are incapable of fomenting actual revolutionary acts. But once they catch on -- MLK, Robert Kennedy, Malcolm X, John Lennon -- it's a guaranteed bullet to the head.

Andrew Cotton What does "socialist sellout" even mean? To me it sounds like a very silly attempt to combine two "bad words" to smear the subject.
If he is a socialist, he is no sellout. Those are mutually exclusive terms. So I would also like some elaboration on the thought process here.
@@comingviking He's a sellout because he's a corporatist, a statist, is a multimillionaire, owns three homes and got a sweet book deal. As a matter of fact that makes him a hypocrite too. Can you name one single solitary thing he's accomplished in the Senate in 25 years ? Neither can I. He's a corpotatist because he takes corporate campaign contributions, less than other members of Congress but he still takes them. See opensecrets.org. Bernard Sanders isn't special. Hes just as much part of the political Establishment as any member of that Congtess. And he's a statist because when faced with a social problem his first impulse is to ask what can the state do to solve this instead of asking OUGHT the state intervene at all and OUGHT the matter be resolved by the citizenry with limited government interference. @@ranter7100 You're in the only anglosaxon country where there is an social/leftist government in power. Even my own country the Netherlands, one of the inventors and original/oldest capitalists, is deep into neoliberalism now, so deep that our state is compromised, commiting crimes against us. It tooks decades but they succeeded in keeping the people in that capitalist/neoliberal belief, helped by nationalist/populist memories of the 70/80's when we were indeed perhaps one of the most free and social and progressive countries in the world at that moment. There is nothing left, we moved away from the German Rhineland model to the anglosaxon one shortly after that time, no leftist government since, and like the US and UK, the Netherlands has slit down the drain, and joined them. A lot of policy with corporations in mind. Are they better than our lunatic right wing outfit yes but its still only a vote for the less of two evils.
Center left govts around the world are selling out their citizens and the right is insane.
What we need right now is policy that addresses the problems we have Growing inequality, collapsing climate, growing social unrest. and no govts on earth are addressing this.

Everyone in the world needs to hear this speech
I would be heartened if the majority in amerika would hear and that even a fraction could understand the reality today. As MLK said the USA is the greatest purveyot of violence in the world, which is truer now than ever. Amerikans need to stop enabling the evils perpetrated on the world by their government.
