- Chris Hedges spoke at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on November 3, 2018. He is a Truthdig columnist, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, a New York Times best-selling author, a professor in the college degree program offered to New Jersey state prisoners by Rutgers University, and an ordained Presbyterian minister. He has written 12 books, including the New York Times best-seller “Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt” (2012), which he co-authored with the cartoonist Joe Sacco. His other books include "Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt," (2015) “Death of the Liberal Class” (2010), “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle” (2009), “I Don’t Believe in Atheists” (2008) and the best-selling “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America” (2008). his introduction on Durkheim's Anomie was like lighting a flame in a hopeless dungeon. Utterly brilliant.
Notice that what Durkheim was saying is that people find meaning in exactly the kind of societies we in the modern US are proud of having freed ourselves from. Societies with tons of social/family obligations. You can't kill yourself because you're your nephew's godfather. You can't kill yourself because you're working to help your father amass your sister's dowry. You can't kill yourself because who will run the farm, or the family shoe repair business or small restaurant.

The greater good is more important - the role you play to serve your community/family/group is valued above individuality. Also detrimental to the human spirit. @@MrSp0iler As a direct outcome of the war and attrocities the Germans have done in those countries, there could never be a peaceful with eachother there. Both of my parents were "Heimat Vertriebene", my mom walked with her parents as a 16 year old from the Memel region (on the Russian border) straight to Dresden to widness the bombardements of it. She did never overcome the loss. What is to condemn is the violence against these people by authorities of the governments and the Russian army. My grandma had to endure the death march in the former Czechoslowakian Republik. I'm glad young Zcech people are digging deeper into this and other attrocities. But that they had to leave was a rational decision.

I'll sometimes know what anecdotes are coming just by the title, but listen / read anyway, and am invariably pleased or even surprised with a new delivery, placement in context or both.

His explanation of WHY auto workers voted for Drumpf after voting for Sanders - is spot on. I protested against NAFTA back in 1992 and I was at the shutdown of the WTO in 1999.
The dems supported NAFTA and TPP. They sold out the manufacturing base, no wonder they lost in 2016.
The GOP actually wrote NAFTA. It was the GOP’s idea. In the end Trump did not make any changes to NAFTA. It was all a smoke screen. Obama saved the auto industry while the GOP would have let it die after Bush crashed the economy in 2008. Dems get all the blame for something that happened 30 years ago but no credit for something that happened 10 years ago. There was no justification to vote for Trump. Are you guys also familiar with Michael Parenti? Since I've first heard or read anything of his I never miss a chance to read or listen to his work. US working class history was erased from today's public school curriculum, the universities, hollywood, and of course the now monopolized (6 corporations) corporate media. Over the last 100 years through the Palmer Raids, McCarthy and the 'House Un-American Committee,' the Smith Act, Taft-Hartley, the Creel Committee, the C|A's own 'Congress for Cultural Freedom,' etc., the ruling class has wiped virtually any trace of our people's history. How can we carry the torch or continue the fight if we don't know it happened??

Oh definitely. I've read four of his books. But if I were to suggest one for everyone to read - make sure to read America the Farewell Tour. It's so much truth packed into one book. He spells out the entire despair and loneliness and emptiness that any person who lives in America knows in their heart they feel every day. Corporations have scraped and carved this once great country for everything it had to offer.
Sadly truth isn't popular anymore, it's become a blunt instrument.

American heritage is ultimately rooted on jumping ship and abandoning the concept of obligations and duties to their nation. Just as immigrants flee poverty today to run to the US and are incapable of elevating themselves, so too were the first immigrants unable to conquer the tyrannies that they fled in Europe or in Asia.

Thank you Chris for helping me find an understanding of why my friends and family find it so difficult to make ends meet. Good paying jobs with holiday and pay are now scarce, while at the same time, I am encouraged to admire the rich and famous who pay next to nothing in taxes.

@@calholli Parenti or Hedges? I believe Parenti might be retired now. The latest video of him that I've seen was from 2015 I think. But Michael Parenti has been fired and banned more than any of them (as far as I know.) He was really close with Bernie Sanders in the 80's in Vermont (I think they ran on the 'Liberty Union' ticket together if I'm not mistaken.)
Parenti wrote 'Inventing Reality' 2 years before Chomsky wrote 'Manufacturing Consent' repeating some of the same things Parenti's book had discussed - but no credit was given. Chomsky is 'pretend marginalized,' (not really marginalized at all!) The ruling class does *not* want us to start listening to and reading Michael Parenti.
He's more of a threat to them than Hedges I would argue. But that's something you'd have to decide for yourself.

It's easier for government to manage discontent when the affected people are politically sequestered within a narrow ideology, or pitted against other groups,parties, and individuals whose ideas may not align. I wish we could put aside this team mentality for a little while. I would presume that nearly all of Americans feel that Congress does not represent them, or at least act with their well being/quality of life in mind. Imagine if people came together, regardless of political party, religion, race, class, gender and agreed, "let's put ALL our differences aside for a later day, but today....today let's march on the capitol with 1 demand-- Represent Us!". Short of this solidarity being realized , I fear we're doomed
We are doomed. People are ignorant, regardless of their level of education. The vast majority of our fellow Americans have no idea what is happening in the world. Local news, and Trump highlights are the only thing on their radar. Look at the outrage over Saudi Arabia's recent assassination of the elite journalist Jamal Khashoggi. We murder people everyday and chalk it up the "collateral damage". If Khashoggi wasn't in elite circles of other powerful people, we'd have never heard his name. Our government is the most dangerous organization in all of the world, and they like to preach morality while stealing our money and giving it to the war industry to kill and destroy, all in the name of profit.

May I recommend the plan I"m using: I no longer buy ANYTHING new except food. I borrow, share, make, or do without. If everyone did this, we would bring down the oppressors because we are legion and they are few. The only reason the system remains is because we support it with our purchases. I don't care that as I sit here, I an wearing 10 year old crocks, or that my jeans have holes in them. As long as you use your money to support the system that you rail against, you will accomplish nothing.

As often as I reasonably can I refer people to Chris Hedges as a lighthouse of sorts. MSM will never give him the attn. he deserves because he's critical of the Corporate state. It's up to us to expose more people to him. You'll find he often appeals to a range of ideologies.
Big corporation is a good thing. HORROR is that they are turned PUBLIC. Means the ownership is disconnected from any individual. Fund managers are just as good as communist apparatchiks as far as their motivation is concerned. Scavengers. Worse: there is no capital punishment for their ill dealings. Astonishingly only positive comments are listed. When I listen to this presentation hear doom days sect prophet. When I walk outdoors I see crowds of fat smiling, individuals driving oversized cars. Isn't it that two-by-four is actually thinner than two by four inches, isn't it that American ton is 900 kg as opposed to 1000. The fraud was always an integral part of the economy. We just do it on a bigger and bigger scale. And everybody drives a bigger and bigger car.
It puts thing in perspective when you realize just HOW MUCH the entire infrastructure is necessary for wealthy organizations and individuals to earn their money. It suddenly seems much more reasonable to increase their tax obligations. One microcosm of this in action is how Wal-Mart relies on local cops rather than hiring security to deal with issues in their stores. It gets so bad some law enforcement individuals feel they just have to have a police officer permanently stationed at Wal-Mart. This is called subsidizing their security.
Loved listening to the man starting at 1:11:30. He expresses the best response to Chris Hedges' talk (and his vision and his values). Chris Hedges speaks the truth unflinchingly, yet doesn't destroy the last vestiges of hope (only stripping away false hopes). His words deepen my resolve. Thanks to the Media Sanctuary for hosting this talk. I've watched it several times since it first aired, and it inspires me every time.

Chris Hedges, my advise. Lower the register of your language. Speak to the common man and woman. The same message, the same content, the same incontrovertible facts, just not so academic; so elitist in its vocabulary. I agree with everything you present. I want to be inspired and to listen to viable ways in which the general population, marginalized from their own governance, can impact change and reshape the future. But I don't hear that in your message. Come down and speak to the people, hungry as much for your brand of facts as for a message of empowerment. Help us understand how to organize resistance. How to act in defiance of this growing enslavement of our bodies, our minds, and our souls. Help us break the chains and be free again. Don't lecture us. Help us find our courage and to imagine the way out of this plunge into a life of despair.
Listen more than once. You can do it. We don't educate our kids but you can do it. Take your time

Where was he talking about the statue in King Nebuchadnezzars dream that represented the empires of the world crashing down in the final part of the last days? Daniel's interpretation was that it is our day in which the duel Anglo/British Empire represents the last of the kingdoms that gets to rule earth before 2 other great nations rise against it, then it's over. The clay feet of the statue mixed with iron is the fragmented society we live in, the one Chris Hedges speaks so bluntly about, along with the governments of Britain and America being partly strong and partly weak due to society uprising and social movements that's weakening the Empire. Yup, seeing that firsthand with the America: The Farewell Tour! Next up, the 'Great Tribulation' as the bible refers to it. You can call it the 'Great Reset' if you like. Either way, it's been foretold. The writings on the wall.
I agree with much of Hedges's analysis, but he has one major glaring flaw that I'm guessing he purposefully avoids. Namely, what impact the "diversity" religion in America has to accelerating and amplifying the state of "rulelessness" he so often decries. It's not clear whether he's under the delusion that mashing together two dozen different cultures in equal measure, with an insane lack of border enforcement, insane visa priorities like the H1B, calling anyone racist who thinks too much diversity causes more mistrust and friction than it's worth, and so on...whether all of this is actually a *good* thing. Hedges never addresses this because he, I suspect, is also susceptible to peer pressure, no matter how much he claims to strive to be an independent thinker. Being on the take, at least a little, does not require accepting money.

I first viewed a 2013 piece and wondered what Hedges would say in 2019. Trump is a symptom of our sick United States.
I saw hedges 2011 or 2012 interview. He said that 2 years of Obama was a failure. He mentioned that society was going through a shift to extremism. Several years later we can see how messed up the country is. I hope things improve, I think the obama years were the bottom.
