    It is said, once upon a time, Bo Burnham actually finished a thought without moving onto the next one.

      Anxiety does that to you.

      helloworldies My anxiety does the opposite, I overly explain myself through fear of being misconstrued or misinterpreted.

    • @helloworldies
      @helloworldies 8 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Tubbs Tubbs. same, but anxiety can cause adrenaline in the body and make people seem "hyperactive". I have depression/anxiety and while I over explain I also jump from topic to topic sporadically which has been diagnosed by one psychiatrist as ADHD (which is wrong) and by a better, smarter psychologist as anxiety.

      You feel dumb cause he probably has thought about that stuff (about comedy, political correctness, performance etc...) a lot more than you.
      But you feel smart cause he's letting you in on it (his knowledge/educated opinions)
      Bo is a pretty great thinker. He slightly touches on the same stuff (tho in a different was) as David foster Wallace was talking about when he was alive.

    • @copsarebastards
      @copsarebastards 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      lovely comment, I think that's right, and in the same self-aware, heavily post-modern way, as well. I think where wallace pointed the mirror at the novel and novelist, bo is doing the same for singer, comedian, and actor. Very impressive.

    I noticed in most of Bo's interviews he has a hard time getting out what he wants to say. I feel like it's because his brain moves 10x faster than the average mind

    • @dynjir
      @dynjir 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I wouldn't say the average mind, but rather 10x faster than his mouth can coherently explain. It's pretty normal that the brain can think WAY faster than what we can physically talk.
      I feel like he's having more trouble organizing his thoughts in a clear, followable format more than anything.
      To me, it looks like he's processing the question given to him, it evokes a feeling/response, makes a connection to other topics that's made him feel the same way or to a topic related to the question, gets feelings about those topics, connects those with other topics, repeat, ect, all while his mouth is still trying to answer the first question. And since his mouth can't keep up with this, he starts and stops himself a lot, stutters, and sometimes ends up going more and more off tangent to a point where he sometimes forgets what the original question even was.
      I think he's very passionate, but also the kind of person who need some time to organize their thoughts or write them down before being able to say what they want to say properly. But, you know, I don't really know the guy so don't hold me on this

    • @silverandexact
      @silverandexact 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anxiety can do that to you. You just go on a stream of consciousness speech and can't remember where you started or where you wanted to end. Bo has stated that in the last several years, he's dealt with anxiety/panic attacks around his shows, so he's probably at least a little anxious during this interview.

      I feel like young people are amore willing to do that, especially with him because he always has a valuable take on something. as one of the younger stand ups (or former stand ups) no one really takes on the issues of performing and the internet the way he does. I love John mulaney, a lot of gen z does, but I love him and his comedy for a different reason than I love bo and his comedy

  • @cupcakelove17
    @cupcakelove17 8 ปีที่แล้ว +534

    I love the way Bo talks. I think many people think he's on drugs or something or have ADD or whatever but I think he just has so much to say and he can't necessarily get it out smoothly? I hate talking to people because I sound just like that when I try to express what I want to say. I stumble over my words and have plenty of unfinished sentences. He has so much insight, I love his interviews.

    • @macyname2559
      @macyname2559 8 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I'm exactly the same, I've been that way since I was a kid. I was told it's because people with a higher level of intelligence have brains that process things faster so it causes your words to jumble and stutter because your brain is moving too fast for your mouth.

      +Id K don't be so into yourself

    • @macyname2559
      @macyname2559 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Mason King I'm saying what I was told, being into myself would mean that I don't have extreme self image issue which have put me in the hospital. I do. I absolutely hate everything about myself but that doesn't change what my psychiatrist and other doctors have told me and doesn't mean I can't repeat what they have said. I didn't say it was a fact, I said what I have been told before.

    • @masonking2188
      @masonking2188 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Id K it just comes off deuchy. you are probably smarter then a lot of people but there's that many people smarter then you so just chill. it seems like your support cast has leaned on your best quality to try and build your self asteem, but don't be one of those indigo kids who need to think they've got something that other people don't because it's not true. like Joe Rogan is smart but he admits he's actually an idiot just like you and me. we can't make phones or sustain the economy.

    • @macyname2559
      @macyname2559 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Mason King I don't mean to sound that way, I'm aware that I am intelligent in things like textbook intelligence however I have no street smarts whatsoever. Honestly I think I'm dumb but I think it must be from either my depression or self image issues. I also have social issues due to psychopathic tendencies and my codependency issues. (I have a lot of mental issues haha.)
      I will apologize if I came off that way, I really didn't mean to. I really don't want to seem that way to people especially since I hate that 'special snowflake' stuff.
      I'm really really sorry. 😰

    this interview is better than all the 'professional' interviews; I love the fact that it's slightly disorganised and casual, and the questions really let Bo express his opinions (in that slightly fidgety, multiple-thoughts-at-once way) and the interviewers are young, but their questions give really great insight and I just love this slightly awkward, easy-going interview. It's more realistic (if that makes sense?) Amazing

      +Tristen Fierro the burrito thing being that he would have done things diferently if he knew how it would have ended up. the pringle can thing being that some things in life are just impossible and and end up going to hell when you try them (the pringles spilling on to his face) and needing to move on even though you try so much do make it work (even going as far to have a daughter do his work hahaha). pretty eye opening. Bo is actually really deep.

    is it weird that I want to just start this interview over and watch it again? I would vote for Bo Burnham to be president and i'm not even kidding. His level of practical introspection is astounding at times. And the fact that he would scoff at the idea of someone wanting him to president is exactly why he deserves that kind of position. Only a person who felt they didn't deserve the honor would treat it with the respect it deserved. This is exactly why doing stand up gives him anxiety because he feels somewhat morally at odds with the fact that he could be a millionaire for what it is he's doing and it's also what makes him work so hard. sorry... got a little rant-like there. Thanks for the inspiration Bo.

    • @jamesgray9578
      @jamesgray9578 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I want to agree but part of me feels like we just want him to become president because we idolize him. He's very intelligent but I wouldn't think that he would want to be apart of something that involves politics.

    • @stevencross6189
      @stevencross6189 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yo Stop Yea. that's what I already said. I'm sure he wouldn't really want to be a part of politics which is one of the main reasons he would be good for it. The type of people who are drawn to politics are typically manipulative and power hungry where as Bo is incredibly self aware and wouldn't take any decision lightly that would affect a large group of people.

He mentioned in a 2018 interview with vulture I think that he had done some small unannounced shows in LA, just doing a song. He said he might go back, I think his exact words were "I'm better with it than without it" but he hasn't yet and is now writing songs for the new sesame street movie (which doesn't seem like something he'd do based solely on his shows but hey I don't know much of anything about him lol)

    His anxiety makes him almost “catlike”. Notice his attention get snagged by the slightest side sound like the people in the elevator or when the door creaked open. Not that it “pleases” me to see Bo and his anxiety, but fuck why is it so fascinating to watch someone contain so much of a someone within a single someone.

      @@crycrywolf I loved the fuck out of it. It caught me off guard coming out of nowhere like that, in the wake of his hiatus. But I was thrilled to see a whole load of “content” drop 😂.
      I do often wonder how exaggerated his condition might be, for certain emotional effect/impact. And how genuine his portrayal of himself really is, especially with Inside. It’s like he decided to go full-on and just patent the ‘depression comedy genre’.
      His stuff has now become just as sad as it is funny 🙃

    • @crycrywolf
      @crycrywolf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@geauxst9 RIGHT?? I was just thinking “I wonder what he’s up to these days” and assumed he would do more acting after promising young woman was so well received lol. I went in knowing nothing and felt like I got hit by a truck.
      As for what’s real…I think he’s always been clear that what we see is an exaggeration played up. But so inside is probably a bit of a “shroedingers mental breakdown,” if you will. With that said, there’s a few videos where you clearly see him have a panic attack and interviews where he can’t mask it. Watching him talk about his anxiety in more recent interviews actually almost makes it seem like he downplayed it originally. But I suppose interviews are a type of performance too.
      Also it turns out he recorded a podcast while making Inside. And while he sounds OK-ish its clear he was still struggling quite a bit mentally and feeling kind of lost. (It’s called happy sad confused if you’re curious).
      Anyways. Regardless hes definitely leaned into his sad emo poet persona and i feel like it might be his final form. 😂

      I think he also more than any other “offensive” comedian has spent a lot of time addressing his work and trying to atone for it. It’s reckless to ignore that (Musical Comedy channel has a compilation of this apologies they shared recently).

    Bo, as a long time performer myself, I certainly respect whatever career decisions you choose from here on out, but I figured for what it's worth, I should let you know that I am one of probably many many people in your post-teen demographic that doesn't tend to comment much on things these days, but deeply enjoys YOU as a person, not even necessarily as just a comedian. There is a special something that you have as a performer that I can connect with in a way that I cannot with other comedians. And I can't tell you how uplifting you've been for followers of your work all over. I know, just in my circle of friends alone, including a few who share your battle with anxiety, you've been kind of the glue that holds everything together for them. One of my best friends whose mother has ALS has been watching your stuff for years and you've helped her keep a smile on her face through all of it. But, that's because she's connected with YOU, not just the material you've written. We watch your stuff on mute and laugh because your mannerisms are just so classically Bo Burnham.
    I totally understand the irony of acquiring fame from talking about how ridiculous fame is, but on a very simplified level, just please know that Bo-the-performer has the ability to create Mass happiness (Hamilton pun) and positive change... if you can somehow find a way to get past all the mental paradoxes that encourage you to leave the stage. Thanks if you took the time to read this.

    Whether it's in some bold writing in a script for a comedy tv program or another stand up special, this interview previewed that we are not going to see the last of bo burnham, as much as he says we are. He has that personality where it's wound up and needs to be expelled in some sort of art medium. He has to throw up all his thoughts some places and he has the platform where they manifest. Even if it's his last special, theres going to be Bo writings in sketch shows or some sort, which for him is probably good. I bet he doesn't even mind doing shows when it's once or three times a month but I bet it's the being on the road that wears him more than anything. He seems the type to really hunger for stable relationships and have difficulty discerning the reality of relationships he does establish and that can be particularly difficult for people who are famous.

    "Conflicted." YES! That is what I love so much about Bo's work. He is painfully, wonderfully self-aware. He's constantly calling out the artifice of his role, and how surreal it is to actually be that guy. It's a TH-cam confessional about the firehose of fame, the love/hate dynamic of seeking and gaining attention, and the absurdity of putting on a pedestal a kid who is just trying to figure it all out, himself. I think the reason why people gravitate toward the darker side of his comedy is because they relate to the inherent loneliness of existentialism. Each of us is locked up inside our own head, with only words and symbols to bridge the gulf between us. How rarely do we truly feel understood? How crushingly absurd it is that we are all (because of our isolation) completely and utterly unique and irreplaceable.... and yet we live in a world awash with billions of such individuals... a world that can afford to treat us all as dispensable? Bo's break from comedy is a way of saying, "Look, I'm not special. You'll get on without me," and yet ironically, it makes what he offered in comedy so much more rare.

    Wow. I didn't know he had panic attacks on stage and shit. First time I've seen him off stage and I totally get how his comedy is now.
    Cause I've got rough anxiety. When I was in high school, I'm 23 now, I was the nerdy, tall, shy kid who didn't really click with many people. Always getting used and heartbroken. Then I tried theater, and realized I can put all my emotions and thoughts into acting. And when I'm on the stage, I can be me. And more comfortable "talking" to people. So I get how his comedy is and now love and appreciate it so much more.

    This was the period of time, as he said, that he was going through some intense anxiety, panic attacks etc... I know his answers in interviews are all over the place usually (in a genius way) but the way he speaks in this interviews really reminds me of the time in my life that I was experiencing extreme anxiety, even light dissociation. And when I tried to express my thoughts, it sounded a lot like how he sounds here. Clearly having thoughts, perhaps too many thoughts, and not being able to put these thoughts into words easily. But you feel whatever you're feeling so strongly that you just gush out words and thoughts but can hardly finish one thought because it triggers another thought.

He brings a lot of laughter into a world filled with hatred. We need more entertainers like him. But, I am a little concerned over how fidgety he was in this video.
