Propagate Money Plant or UFO Plant (Pilea Peperomoides) in Water - By Single Leaf and stem Cutting

  • You can propagate the Chinese Money Plant from a Leaf Stem Cutting in water. You need to take the leaf, the leaf stem and a small section of the main stem to ensure good results.
    The cutting can be grown on in water until it shows signs of leaf growth, then it is ready to put into a good quality potting mix to grow on.

    A while ago I propagated 1 leaf with a small bit of stem and another leaf with no stem. The ‘no stem’ leaf grew roots but no babies. The stem leaf (like the one in this video) rooted and shot out offspring! Very fun experiment!
    PS, make sure the container you’re putting the cutting into has a wide neck ! It’s quite heartbreaking trying to take the plant out and accidentally breaking off all progress!

      Yes, you need to be very carful with the root system of water grown plants, which is why nurseries grow them in soil.....

    So that’s why mine won’t root, I didn’t have a piece of the stem! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Thank you!

      Water propagation is not always explained fully, even with most leaf cuttings for succulents you need the part of the leaf that joins the stem, we have a video on that coming soon.

      Not sure exactly what you mean.... However the baby leaves, growing on a green soft stem ,can be propagated the same way however results are not as reliable.

    Hello sir, I tried with two leaves as you show in the video. But before it took root, its tips began to rot (the part in the water). What could I have done wrong? Or is this root rot common?Thanks for your informative video

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The most important part is where the cut is make. So the cutting must have a little part of the stem on it. Change the water every 2 - 3 days. Not to hot and humid, but maybe a little mist spray if the air is hot and dry. Part shade as well. Let us know how it goes.

    • @miabytex
      @miabytex ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnyAGardening Hello again, thanks for your reply. You were right again, I was making the wrong cuts all this time. I guess instead of nodes I was going for like a clean stick kinda cut. My last money plant attempt died as well. I will try this on the money plant in a week. But I tried it already on a couple of different plants of mine, including my chubby Neon Pothos. For some reason it has like really fat branches, it goes up not to sides but its weight putting it down. And I support it with a stick but now the stick can't carry it too. 🙈🙈 I did exactly like on the video and in just this 6 days it has clean white water roots. Thank you. I might even try my monstera next. 🌞🌿🌱

    I love this video! I really like growing my plants in water mediums. Do you think that when the babies shoot out I will be able to keep the plant in (clean and appropriately fertilised) water? Im curious of if the offsprings will rot in the water or if they will be okay.

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Long term growing in water leads to problems, so not recommended. Problem is that roots need air and over time they usually rot in water.

    Does the propagation in water need full sun?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, best in light shade, dappled shade or strong indirect light.

    I took a cutting with that much of the stem, it's been about 2.5 weeks...is it typical for it to take up to 6 weeks for a piece of the stem that's that small? Currently I change the water every 3-4 days and I have the glass with the leaf/stem in a window that gets a small amount of direct sun and some dappled sun/shade throughout the day...the house I'm in stays in the 72F-78F (22C-25C) degree range because it's summer. There's currently zero roots beginning to emerge, should I continue to wait?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Peri, it can take a month or more to show good signs of root growth. Just make sure the water does not heat up in the sun and be patient, we have had no failures with the money plant yet. If you have a little stem on the leaf, it should work. Let us know

    • @johnnyAGardening

      Waiting for the new leaf is usually a sign that the root system is established.

  • @marylamb8906
    @marylamb8906 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's not actually true. leaf cuttings of this plant is the same as others. it will root without a sliver of the stem.

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may try it without the stem, however most research tell you that a piece of the stem is needed, see for example thehealthyhouseplant.com/can-you-propagate-pilea-plants-from-leaves-yes/ .... as well as smartgardenguide.com/chinese-money-plant-propagation/ This is because the stem contains the growth nodes, the leaf stem does not.

    Yay! An Aussie plant enthusiast! Have come to hate this plant. Killed one about 2 years ago and was determined to get it right when I found another at Bunnings. It’s just so temperamental - the majority of my stems have shed and I’m thinking the only remaining issue might be a lack of light. Wish me luck!
